Something’s Awry, Baboon Animation Rev Up YA Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Drive! Cal Gal Drive!’

Something’s Awry Productions (Unlucky Charms, Grump in the Night), in collaboration with the multi-Emmy-winning team at Baboon Animation (Angry Birds, Gigantosaurus, SuperWings), announces the development of Drive! Cal Gal Drive!, a new cyberpunk series for young adults. Created by Something’s Awry, the series aims to captivate YA audiences with its unique humor, high-octane action and anime-inspired style.

Synopsis: Drive! Cal Gal Drive! is a sci-fi action-comedy about two young women — Lucy, a daredevil rideshare driver, and Raven, an escaped AI — on a high-speed journey through the mega-city of NeoCalifornia.

Described as a cyberpunk Thelma & Louise, the series is about chasing your dreams and finding your place in a world gone mad

In a drive to build up a fan base with a taste of the show, the producing partners are putting together an Actual Play mini-series starring voice actors Ryan Colt Levy (Chainsaw Man, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, Welcome toDemon School! Iruma-kun), Alejandra Reynoso (Castlevania, Winx Club, Pokémon Horizons: The Series), Yong Yea (NieR: Automata, Yakuza/Like a Dragon, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean) and Paul Castro Jr. (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth). They will be hosted by series creator Kurtis Theorin.

Cal Gal is the most fun project I’ve ever worked on,” Theorin said. “I’m thrilled to introduce you to Lucy and Raven’s mad race through gig-economy cyberpunk. Just like today, NeoCalifornia is a world reeling from advanced AI, powerful influencers, rabid fandoms, and tycoons with more money than sense. It’s a wild ride.”

Baboon will unveil the new trailer for Drive! Cal Gal Drive!, starring Kira Buckland (2B in Nier:Automata, Jolyne in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) at the Annecy Festival’s MIFA market.

“The show is pure joyride — and has been a joyride to develop so far. We’re thrilled about the great stars attached and to show off the trailer,” said Baboon’s President, Mike de Seve.

Emily Kaye, Baboon’s head of YA, noted, “Baboon is building quite a star-studded slate of IP, directly linked to social media: Established online properties, new IP by major digital creators, and properties enhanced by some outstanding online personalities.”

de Seve added, “I don’t think there’s a company in the industry that’s built a team and a slate like this.”
