‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Will Be CG-Animated with Strong MCU Ties

In a recent episode of The Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum offered some hints about the upcoming series Eyes of Wakanda. First announced in December at a screening and preview event for What If…? Season 2, the show will chronicle the history of Wakandan warriors — pre-T’challa Black Panthers and members of the Dora Milaje — who travel the world in search of dangerous vibranium artifacts.

Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show, we’re doing in animation, ties directly into the MCU. This is a story about Wakandan history … It’s both about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So if you’re a fan of the movies, I think this show’s going to be a real treat,” Winderbaum told the podcast. “We’re exploring so many amazing avenues on the animated side.”

Winderbaum also confirmed that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler (Judas and the Black Messiah, Fruitvale Station) is on board as executive producer, and that long-time Marvel storyboard artist Todd Harris (What If…?, Black PantherBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avengers: Endgame) makes his directorial debut on the series.

Pop culture outlet The Cosmic Circus revealed additional details, including that the show is being handled by multi-award-winning U.K. CG animation and VFX shop Axis Studios, known for its work on Love, Death + Robots episodes Mason’s Rats, The Tall Grass and Helping Hand; Scrooge: A Christmas Carol and Eli Roth’s live-action Borderlands movie, coming to theaters August 9.

TCC also scooped some of the Multiverse tie-in tales fans can look forward to, including a pick-up from the Eternals comic which introduced the alien race known as The Horde. Eyes of Wakanda will also reportedly incorporate the Greek Gods and Iron Fist.

Eyes of Wakanda is expected to premiere on Disney+ later this year.
