Riley and her many emotions have broken another box-office record this week! With over 1.26 billion in worldwide ticket sales, Pixar’s hugely popular summer pic Inside 2 is now the Disney-owned studio’s top-grossing theatrical release of all time. The movie, which was directed by Kelsey Mann, has shattered the record set by Brad Bird’s 2018 sequel, Incredibles 2, which scored $1.24 billion at the box office. This is quite a remarkable achievement at a time when media observers were worried about the health of the film industry and theatrical releases in general.
Right now, Inside Out 2 is top-grossing theatrical release of 2024, with Warner Bros. Pictures’ sequel Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire following with $711.8 million and $567.6 million in total sales.
Inside Out 2 is also the fourth-highest grossing animated movie in history behind Disney’s rozen ($1.29 billion in 2013), Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36 billion) and Frozen II ($1.45 billion in 2019).
Pixar’s 28th movie also holds the record for fastest animated movie to top $1 billion at the box office worldwide in less than three weeks after its release date.
Animated movies are doing very well globally in 2024. A quick look at the worldside box office Top-10 for 2024 shows that animated titles currently hold the No. 1 (Inside Out 2, $1.267.9 billion), No. 4 (Kung Fu Panda 4 $544.771 billion), No. 7 (Despicable Me 4, $265.6 million) and No. 8 (The Garfield Movie, $218.6 million) spots.
