Janus Films has released the official trailer for a 4K restoration of the 1982 animated sci-fi classic, The Time Masters, aka Time Masters or Les Maîtres du Temps in French. Directed by René Laloux, who is best known for the hugely influential Fantastic Planet (1973), the movie first opened in the U.S. in 1984. The classic title is also famous for being one of the few cinematic works designed and co-dwritten by iconic fantasy artist Jean Giraud (aka Moebius). The film will be getting a theatrical re-release on July 26 in select U.S. theaters.
The script is by René Laloux and Jean “Moebius” Giraud, with dialogue by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The film is based on the French novel L’Orphelin de Perdide written by Stefan Wul.
In The Time Masters, a young boy named Piel is stranded alone on the dangerous desert planet Perdide. He’s the only survivor of an attack by giant hornets. Calling for help, Piel’s father’s friend Jaffar keeps contact with the kid and hurries across space toward Perdide.
Here is the official synopsis:
After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet of Perdide, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) maintains radio contact with Jaffar (Jean Valmost), a pilot transporting the exiled Prince Matton (Yves-Marie) & Princess Belle (Monique Thierry) from their former kingdom. Jaffar then seeks the help of Silbad (Michel Elias), a cheerful old-timer who knows how to circumvent Perdide’s hazards, including brain-devouring insects and watery graves. Along the way, Jaffar and company encounter a pair of impish homunculi stowaways, identity-less angels controlled by an amorphous hive mind, and the Masters of Time, mysterious beings who can bend reality and perhaps even reveal to the heroes their secret origins as well as their destinies.
