Toonz & Giffi Join Forces to Adapt Ruskin Bond’s ‘Adventures of Rusty’

Toonz Media Group and London-based Giffi Ltd. have entered a co-production and co-distribution agreement for the new animated series, Adventures of Rusty, based on the stories by celebrated Indian author Ruskin Bond. The 52 x 7′ series project aims to develop the well-loved tales of a lonely young Anglo-Indian boy into a global brand.

The short-form animated series will initially be released on digital platforms, followed by YouTube and other distribution channels. Toonz and Giffi will jointly hold the distribution rights for media, as well as collaborating on toys, merchandise and collectibles inspired by the brand.

“We are delighted to partner with Giffi to recreate the magic of the renowned author Ruskin Bond’s captivating storytelling in an animated series adaptation,” said P. Jayakumar, CEO of Toonz Media Group. “We are confident that the animated TV series combined with the global digital strategy to release short-form series on YouTube and other digital platforms will ensure the success of this venture.”

Prabit Nair, CEO of Giffi, commented, “Ruskin Bond, the legend needs no introduction. Being part of his legacy is a proud moment for all of us. We are thrilled to collaborate with Toonz on this project and are committed to making this venture a global success. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Sidd Bond for considering us for this project.”

Born in then-British India in 1934, Ruskin Bond has penned more than 500 short stories, essays and novels, including dozens of books for children. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages and sold over 20 million-plus copies, with many evolving into timeless classics. His first novel, The Room on the Roof (1956) received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, and the author has since been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, awarded by the Republic of India.

“It is truly a delightful journey to see my stories come to life through animation. The thought of reaching a new generation of readers and viewers through this medium is both exciting and humbling,” Bond shared. “I hope this adaptation captures the essence of my story telling and brings joy to audiences worldwide.”

Siddharth Bond, grandson of Ruskin Bond’s grandson, is passionate about preserving the author’s legacy. “I am delighted to bring my grandfather’s beloved stories to a new generation through animation,” he said in the announcement. “This initiative aims to capture the magic of Ruskin Bond’s work, making it accessible to younger audiences and ensuring his stories continue to enchant for years to come. Ruskin Bond and the family is very happy and excited to see his work translated into an animation series.”
