Stephanie Meyer’s supernatural romance saga Twilight is being resurrected for a new animated series, ordered straight to series by Netflix. Announced by Lionsgate Television in March, the project will draw from Meyer’s 2020 novel Midnight Sun, which retells the story from the perspective of vampire high schooler Edward Cullen.
Sinead Daly (Tell Me Lies, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) is writing and executive producing the adaption. Meyer is also executive producing the animated series, as are Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment, and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart.
Lionsgate released the live-action feature film franchise, which grossed $3.36 billion worldwide across five movies released from 2008 to 2012. The original Twilight novel was released in 2005 and reached No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List. Buoyed by the first film’s release, it became the best selling book of 2008 and was the second best seller of 2009 behind its sequel, New Moon.
The saga centers on the horror-tinged love story between human teenager Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart in the films) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a vampire masquerading as a classmate at her new school. The Cullen vampire clan and local Quileute boy/therianthrope Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) also play key roles in the drama.
Daly is represented by WME and Kaplan/Perrone.
