Pink Parrot Media has captured global rights to the animated feature-length documentary Black Butterflies. Directed by David Baute and based on his 2020 live-action film Climate Exodus, the 2D film highlights the plights of women climate refugees around the world.
Black Butterflies made its world premiere in Annecy’s Contrechamp section this summer and has enjoyed a successful festival run since. Pink Parrot has already secured a distribution deal in Spain, where the project was produced, with Sideral Cinema. The film will open wide in Spanish theaters on December 5, following its local premiere at the Sitges Film Festival (Oct. 4), with Baute in attendance joined by writer Yaiza Berrocal, production designer/animation director Pepe Sánchez (a.k.a. José Sanchez Alonso), art/photography director María Pulido and composer Diego Navarro.
Synopsis: The film merges highly intimate and personal narratives from women across the globe forced to leave their homelands when natural forces render them uninhabitable.
Tanit, Valeria and Shaila are three women from very different parts of the world who face the same problem: climate change. They will lose everything because of global warming effects and they will be forced to emigrate to survive.
The film is produced by Ikiru Films (Tad, The Lost Explorer) and Tinglado Film (Ona) in Spain, Anangu Group (Mummies) and CCMA in Catalonia, and Tunche Films (Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon) in Panama.
Black Butterflies continues its festival circuit with selections at this week’s Animasyros (Ermoupoli, Greece) and upcoming DocsMx (Mexico City) and Manchester Animation Festival (U.K.)
