It looks like we’ll be seeing more of ROZZUM Unit 7134 and her animal friends in the future. DreamWorks is planning a sequel to its critically acclaimed, global hit The Wild Robot. The film’s director Chris Sanders revealed the news at Deadline Contenders’ session this morning. “100% yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one,” the director said.
The movie, which has been one of the season’s biggest hits has grossed over $107.6 million worldwide since its release in late September, and has a brilliant 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed and penned by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, Lilo & Stitch), The Wild Robot is based on Peter Brown’s best-selling book trilogy. The pic is produced by Jeff Hermann (The Boss Baby 2, Kung Fu Panda). The movie features the voices of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Catherine O’Hara, Mark Hamill, Bill Nighy and Stephanie Hsu. Brown’s second book in the series was published in 2017 and is titled The Wild Robot Escapes.
During the Deadline Contenders’ session, Nyong’o, who voices the film’s central robot character Roz, also joked that she was inspired by AI voices like Alexa and Siri. She said, “Alexa, Siri and you know those voices on TikTok and Instagram that are so positive and nothing’s ever wrong. That sort of can-do attitude…That was the starting point for Roz and her journey to self-actualization and evolution of self-expression.”
