The European Film Academy has revealed the nominees for European Animated Feature Film this year. As previously announced, the Academy in its aims to equally recognize the achievements and contributions of animation films within European film culture, has made the nominated films in this category additionally eligible for the overall best European Film prize.
The committee which decided on the nominations was comprised of representatives of the European Film Academy and CARTOON, the European Association for Animation Film. The nomination committee will be presented on europeanfilmawards.eu after the publication of the nominations.
The 2024 awards ceremony takes place on December 7 in Lucerne.
The nominated films are:
Flow directed by Gints Zilbalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium)
Synopsis: A wondrous journey, through realms natural and mystical, Flow follows a courageous cat after his home is devastated by a great flood. Teaming up with a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog to navigate a boat in search of dry land, they must rely on trust, courage and wits to survive the perils of a newly aquatic planet.
Opening in theaters in N.Y.C. & L.A. November 22, nationwide December 6.
Living Large directed by Kristina Dufková (Czech Republic, France, Slovakia)
Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Ben has just hit puberty and suddenly his weight’s a problem — for him and for everyone else. The other kids bully him, his divorced parents don’t know what to do. Even the school nurse is worried about him. So, despite his love of food and his emerging talent as a chef, Ben decides to take drastic action. He starts to diet. Maybe that can turn things round. And even win the heart of Klara, the girl of his dreams… Finally Ben will learn that what truly matters isn’t how you look — it’s how you feel.
Savages directed by Claude Barras (Switzerland, France, Belgium)
Synopsis: The island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. One day, at the edge of the immense tropical forest where she lives, 11-year-old Kéria discovers an abandoned baby orangutan in her father’s palm tree operation. As she takes care of the young ape, her young cousin Selaï takes refuge with them to escape the conflict between his family and forestry companies. From then on, the trio will fight together against the threat of destruction that weighs on this ancestral forest. The opportunity for Kéria to discover her Penan roots.

They Shot the Piano Player directed by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal (Spain, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Peru)
Synopsis: A New York music journalist goes on a quest to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of young Brazilian piano virtuoso Tenorio Jr.
