The mighty lion and the speedy hedgehog continued their box office battle over the weekend as Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 fought for dominance. The three-day weekend winner was estimated to be Paramount’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with an impressive $38 million gross, while Disney’s Mufasa followed closely behind with a $37.1 million total. However, Mufasa gets the crown for the five-day holiday stretch ($63.9 million from 4,100 theaters since Wednesday) compared to Sonic’s $59.8 million from 3,769 theaters since Christmas day).
Disney’s other big animated title Moana 2 continued its box office splash at the number five spot with an $18.3 million fifth weekend, with a 5-day total of $28.3 million Stateside. Internationally, Moana 2 is close to hitting the $900 million benchmark with a $882.5 million tally, while Mufasa: The Lion King is roaring with $327.9 million and Sonic 3 is not far behind with $211.5 million worldwide.
