On Wednesday, Netflix held its annual showcase of upcoming series, films and games. The event was held in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre and live-streamed across 12 countries to local viewing events.
“No matter what you’re looking forward to this year, there’s no way to be completely ready for what’s next on Netflix,” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix Chief Content Officer. With more than 700 million people watching, we can’t just be one thing. We need to be the best version of everything.”
While the event was light on animation news, we were treated to a new image from the CG family feature In Your Dreams, and the opening sequence and release date for the anime adaptation of hit video game series Devil May Cry.
Set to release sometime in 2025, In Your Dreams is a comedy adventure about Stevie and her brother Elliot who journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams. If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate dream come true … the perfect family.
The voice cast will feature Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Craig Robinson (The Office).
In Your Dreams is written and directed by Alex Woo and co-directed by Erik Benson, from an original story by Woo and Stanely Moore. Producers are Timothy Hahn and Gregg Taylor. Music by John Debney. The movie is produced by Netflix Animation and Kuku Studios.
Anime fans can look forward to the Netflix launch of Devil May Cry on April 3! In this adaptation of the popular Capcom game from the vision of Adi Shankar (Castlevania), sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.
Shankar serves as showrunner for the new series, which will voice star Johnny Yong Bosch (Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War). South Korea’s Studio MIR is producing the animation.
It’s also worth noting that Guillermo del Toro, director of the streamer’s Oscar-winning stop-motion feature Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, appeared in a video message to introduce his new Frankenstein live-action movie. The celebrated filmmaker has been eager to adapt the seminal sci-fi/horror story for 50 years, telling the audience: “Over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.”
Special guests also included WWE superstars CM Punk and Rhea Ripley, Ben Affleck, John Mulaney, Tina Fey and the Duffer Brothers.
It was also confirmed that global fan event TUDUM, which always has some animated tidbits to share, will stream live on Netflix from the Kia Forum in L.A. on May 31.
