No winter blues in sight for DreamWorks’ new animated feature, Dog Man, which is pouncing on the number one spot at the U.S. box office this weekend. Directed by animation veteran Peter Hastings, the high-energy adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s popular book series made $10,8 million on Friday, and is estimated to hit a pawsome $36 million total at the box office this weekend.
This marks the second biggest opening for an animated movie opening in January for DreamWorks Animation since Kung Fu Panda 3, which made $41.8 million in 2016. It is also the third consecutive no.1 debut for the studio after Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Wild Robot in 2024, and the 26th DreamWorks title to make it the No. 1 position in its opening weekend. The movie, which features the voices of Pete Davidson, Isla Fischer, Lil Rel Howery, Stephen Root and Ricky Gervais, has been praised for its tactile, eye-popping CG animation, clever jokes and big heart.
The first week of February also sees four animated/CG-heavy movies in the Top 10: Disnye’s Mufasa continues to rule in the Number 3 spot (with a $6.6 million weekend and a total cume of $230 million after seven weeks in release). Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 throws darts at the competition in the No. 6 position with a $3.25 million weekend ($230.5 million cume in its seventh week), while Disney’s Moana 2 is still sailing smoothly in the No. 7 spot with a $2.9 weekend and a $453.9 million total take after 10 weeks in theaters. The movie has made over $1.27 billion worldwide and is now available on PVOD.
