GKIDS announced today it will bring three of Oscar-nominated director Mamoru Hosoda’s animated feature films back to theaters nationwide throughout 2025, in vibrant new 4K restorations.
The series kicks off with Hosoda’s critically lauded modern fairy tale Wolf Children, which comes to North American cinemas for its first ever nationwide release May 11, 12 & 13.
Next in the series is Hosoda’s timeless digital-age epic Summer Wars, which will screen July 27, 28 & 29.
Finally, the series rounds out with the time-traveling romance The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, coming to theaters September 28, 29 & 30.
All screenings will be held for three nights only, and tickets for all three titles are on sale next month.
GKIDS previously released the director’s Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated Mirai (2018) and his critically lauded Belle (2021), which became Hosoda’s highest grossing film to date in North America. Both films made their respective world premieres at the Cannes Film Festival. Hosoda’s six features have all been nominated for, and five have been awarded, the Japan Academy Prize for “Animation of the Year.” He remains the only Japanese animation director outside of Studio Ghibli to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
The new theatrical releases accompany GKIDS’ overall celebration of Hosoda’s filmography in 2025. In addition to the new theatrical rereleases of his most celebrated titles, GKIDS is also releasing the Hosoda catalog of titles for the first time on home entertainment platforms in 4K and SteelBook versions.
