This month, family audiences have a chance to experience the story of the New Testament through a fresh, animated lens, when Angel Studios presents The King of Kings in theaters on April 11, timed to Holy Week. The CG feature is inspired by a retelling of the story of Jesus Christ from literary legend Charles Dickens, and is produced by animation studio Mofac.
Ahead of the big-screen launch, Animation Magazine debuts an exclusive first-look clip featuring Charles Dickens (voiced by Kenneth Branagh) and his wife, Catherine (Uma Thurman), who urges the writer up to his study to tell the story of “the true King of Kings” to his King Arthur-loving lad, Walter. Synopsis: Renowned storyteller Charles Dickens finds it challenging to bond with his imaginative son, Walter, amidst his busy career. After Walter disrupts one of Dickens’ readings, Dickens decides to share the story of Jesus Christ with him, hoping to bridge the gap between them. As Dickens narrates the story, Walter becomes captivated, experiencing the events of Jesus’ life vividly Through the journey of Jesus, Walter and Dickens’ ‘relationship deepens, culminating in a bond of love forged through storytelling.
The King of Kings is the directorial debut of VFX supervisor Seong-ho Jang (The Thousand Faces of Dunjia), and features a stellar voice cast which also includes Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, Mark Hamill as King Herod, Roman Griffin Davis as Walter Dickens, Forest Whitaker as Peter, Ben Kingsley as High Priest Caiaphas and Oscar Isaac as Jesus Christ.
Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord in the 1840s and read it to his family each Christmas, but the piece was largely unknown until it was published in 1934, six decades after the author’s death.
