South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism launched its “Basic Plan for the Promotion of the Animation Industry” this week, announced more than $1 billion USD (1.5 trillion KRW) in funding to support the growth of the country’s animation sector through to 2029.

The scheme aims to help Korean producers pivot from a traditional focus on preschool content (such as the global sensation Baby Shark) and TV formats to an emphasis on theatrical feature films, content for global streamers and IP franchises. The plan also aims to address the structural limitations such as narrow audience base, broadcast-led distribution ecosystem and low production budgets.

The Ministry also announced the launch of a $140 million animation production fund (200 billion KRW), which it plans to expand to $1B over the next five years, as well as a new cash rebate system to encourage international co-productions and attract foreign investment in Korean animation projects.

Korean delegations will meet with potential overseas partners at national pavilions planned for major animation content markets in China and across Southeast Asia in the coming years. Localization support (dubbing, subtitling, regional marketing, etc.) will be handled by Korean Cultural Centers and K-Content Business Hubs  around the world.

On a technology front, the government is developing an AI-based production ecosystem which will incorporate government funded training datasets for video content, and policy framework to support virtual humans, emerging media formats and generative AI short films. The Ministry is working in partnership with universities and creative institutions to train animation writers, producers and AI creators in pursuit of a pipeline that will support Korean animation production from conception to production, distribution and merchandising.

Korean animation has been on the rise with a number of local box-office hits, including the family fantasy-adventure Heartsping: Teenieping of Love (based on the series Catch! Teenieping from SAMG Ent.), which took in $7.7M from 1.24M admissions after is August 2024 debut and became the  country’s second-highest-grossing film of all time (behind 2011’s Leafie: A Hen into the Wild). Most recently, faith-based feature The King of Kings, animated by Mofac and picked up by Angel Studios, opened at No. 2 at the box office earlier this month and has racked up $52.5M worldwide.

Outside theaters, Netflix will launch its first Korean animate feature Lost in Starlight on May 30. Produced by Climax Studio, the original modern romance is directed by Han Ji-won, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Ji-won. The Korean voice cast is led by Revenant stars Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung, who voice a young woman selected as an astronaut for a Mars probe mission who falls in love with a down-to-Earth musician before her launch, setting up the ultimate long-distance relationship.

CG comedy-adventure feature Stitch Head will make its World Premiere amid this year’s bustling Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. The monster-making flick hails from Cologne-based Gringo Films, and aims to re-construct the classic story of Frankenstein for families around the world.

Synopsis: In a castle’s laboratory high above the little town of Grubbers Nubbin, the maddest of all mad professors awakes monstrous creations to (almost) Life™ … then promptly forgets all about them.

So who looks after the castle? Who takes care of the monsters? Who teaches them not to be monstrous, so the townsfolk below don’t form an angry mob and burn the castle to the ground? Meet Stitch Head — the Professor’s very first creation. Stitch Head does all the work, but the Professor never even notices him.

One day, a tired looking freak show comes to town, led by its owner Fulbert Freakfinder. The show needs a new attraction and when Freakfinder meets humble Stitch Head, he knows he has found his star.

The cast is led by Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) as Stitch Head, Joel Fry (Cruella) as Stitch Head’s freshly-created best friend, Creature, and Tia Bannon (Midnight Sky) as Arabella, a fearless young girl and the monster’s greatest ally. They are joined by Rob Brydon (The Amazing Maurice), Alison Steadman (Life Is Sweet), and comedians Fern Brady and Jamali Maddix.

Steve Hudson directed and adapted the screenplay from the children’s book by Guy Bass, illustrated by Pete Williamson. The film is produced by Sonja Ewers for Gringo Films, with Mark Mertens serving as producer for Fabrique d’Images.

“Guy Bass’ original book — featuring a castle full of monsters all terrified of the humans in the village below — is a wonderful comic inversion of the Frankenstein genre that’s been so much fun to bring to life — even now, it makes us laugh every time,” said Hudson. “At the same time, Guy’s characters are so emotional and engaging. As a monster, Stitch Head assumes he can never be loved — but in the end discover that love is all around him. In a fearful world, I really hope that’s something sticks with our audience long after they’ve seen the film.”

Stitch Head boasts a strong lineup of co-production companies includes Marc Gabizon and Michael Luda with Fabrique d’Images, Traumhaus Studios, Senator Film and Aniventure. The film was animated by Assemblage Entertainment with music by composer Nick Urata (Little Miss Sunshine, Paddington).

“We’ve loved collaborating with the exceptionally talented Stitch Head team for the past two years. I am thrilled with the final result of the movie, and I can’t wait to share it with audiences at Annecy and around the world!” said Aniventure CEO Adam Nagle.

Ewers added, “Annecy is the world’s leading animation festival and Stitch Head is our debut animation feature. The material was always so heartfelt, and so funny — its not always been easy, but we’ve done everything we could to make Stitch Head the best film it could possibly be. For Stitch Head now to be celebrating its premiere alongside the best animation in the world is a dream come true.”

GFM Animation is handling worldwide sales and will be screening the film to distributors in London and at Cannes. Contact Amanda Kerridge (amanda@gfmanimation.com) for more information.

Ramy Youssef and His Creative Partners Discuss the Making of Prime Video’s ‘#1 Happy Family USA’

0
#1 Happy Family USA [Prime Video]

Actor-writer-director Ramy Youssef’s new Prime Video series #1 Happy Family USA takes viewers back to 2001-era America, and offers a clear-eyed view at the experiences of an Arab-American family as they try to fit in and survive in a world impacted by hate and prejudice. The 2D-animated show, which features the voices of Youssef, Alia Shawkat, Mandy Moore, Salma Hindy, Timothy Olyphant and Kieren Culkin, is described as being “inspired by the childhood nightmares” of Youssef.

We recently caught up with Youssef and the show’s co-creator and executive producer Pam Brady (South Park, Lady Dynamite), and British journalist/illustrator Mona Chalabi (executive producer and writer), who spoke with Animation Magazine about the challenges and rewards of making the first season of this well-received animated series.

Ramy Youssef
Ramy Youssef

“We felt that era had never really been looked at from a different point of view and that animation would be an amazing way to get into a lot of the things that were happening at the time,” says Youssef, who is best known for his stand-up comedy and acclaimed shows such as Mo and Ramy. “The crazy journey of this show is that maybe it started as a time capsule, but now it feels very much like today, just in terms of a family dealing with the surveillance state.”

Youseff says he grew up loving South Park, so he was thrilled to land the opportunity to work with animation veteran and exec producer Pam Brady.

Tackling Touch Issue with Humor

“I think even back then, South Park and The Daily Show were the only shows that cut deeper in terms of making real political commentaries,” he explains. “I was also a big fan of what Mona Chalabi’s visual journalism and the way she used illustrations to speak about things that were very important. She was really great with designing the characters helping with this idea that our characters would be code switching — and looking and acting differently when they were inside and outside their homes. We kind of played with the details of what they wanted to hide and how they would look on our show.”

Brady says he was a big fan of Youssef as well. “I was lightly stalking him,” she recalls. “The idea came to me because he had done a flashback episode on his Hulu show where he was a kid and he had this fantasy world. He wanted to explore that idea more, and he thought that animation would be the best way to execute that idea.”

#1 Happy Family USA [Prime Video]
Ramy Youssef mined his own memories of growing up in an Arab-American family in the suburbs of New Jersey in the new animated series.

The show’s storyboard artists and creative team is based in L.A., but the animation production was handled by Animasia in Malaysia. “They really helped us by getting this unique look for our show, which doesn’t look like modern digital animation,” notes Youssef. “Early on, Mona and I wanted the show to look like something that could have been produced in 2000. We actually had to downgrade and get our hands on older computers to deal with the systems that we used for the show. I think it added to this feeling of looking different from the other animated shows we see today!”

Brady agrees, “They brought this unique, handmade quality to the animation. What we also loved about them was they were making a lot of choices based on our storyboards. So, they were seeing American during that period through their Malaysian lens, and that was even cooler for us. Because the show was now also being interpreted by a non-American point of view.”

Allah is in the Details

Mona Chalabi
Mona Chalabi

“So much thought went into the went into the characters, and I worked very closely with the character design team,” says Chalabi. “I’m also very proud of the background designs on the show. I’m so pleased with how the interior of the home, the school and the mosque all feel so much different from other shows. Our background design team did such a phenomenal job with packing in actually a lot more detail that I’d say you see in animated TV series.”

Youssef mentions that the show took him back to a time in his childhood when the outside world could make him afraid of who he was, as a child of Arab immigrants in the U.S. “Growing up, I witnessed the beginning of surveillance at the mosque — or later, when I went to college, at our student association,” he recalls. “As a child, you don’t really know how to process these things because you’re still forming your sense of self. The young boy in our show is constantly being chased by this fear. The other engine of the series is the father who’s just trying to make a living. Those things especially resonated with me, but that family is not really my family. My mother doesn’t wear a hijab. What some of the sisters on the show go through were based on our writers’ room, which had about 10 people — some where people I had worked with in the past, and others were people that I’d always wanted to work with.”

#1 Happy Family USA [Prime Video]
Look Back and Learn: #1 Happy Family USA offers a sharply observed look at one family’s experiences as immigrants in the U.S. during 9/11 and its aftermaths.
The three-time Emmy-nominated actor tells us that he was a big fan of animation from an early age. “I remember just running home to watch Dragon Ball Z. (We actually pay homage to that show in our second season!) I also loved Hey Arnold! and the way it captured life in New York City. It was a show that always made me laugh and the characters were so rich. There is so much great animation happening right now. For example, there’s a super hilarious show out of Netflix Saudi Arabia called Masameer Country.”

Animation also allowed Youssef and his creative team to tackle subjects that would hit completely differently in a live-action show. “There are so many things that would feel too dramatic or incredibly offensive, but there’s something about animation that allows you to do crazier things but at the same time, you can show the heart,” Youssef points out. “You really feel for these characters and you really understand what they’re coming from. Even when we go crazy with what we’re exploring, it’s very clear that none of it is malicious or mean spirited: It’s more about getting to explore these complex feelings an ideas in this medium. One of the things we were able to do was to allow the story and characters build throughout the first season. The stories could be self-contained, but it was a lot of fun to build it into something. We actually leave season one kind of making it clear that the second season will actually live in a totally different world.”

#1 Happy Family USA [Prime Video]

Chalabi believes that the show’s central family is the heart of the whole thing. “I really love the family,” she says. “I really care about these characters and feel so much tenderness and love for all of them. Even for the villains on the show (like the evil auntie), I know why she is the way she is, and I love her regardless.”

Drawn to Family Dynamics

Brady agrees: “The family is the fundamental part of this show. The reason we can do weird and super silly satire is because I think people will care about the characters. Because if you don’t have that, you won’t believe that a lamb can talk to our main character. So, we spent a lot of time just thinking about the characters. The way Mona designed them also makes them feel real, but also make them feel like a little bit of an abstraction. I remember as we were designing the Rumi character, we just kept wanting to make him cuter and cuter!”

#1 Happy Family USA [Prime Video]
Illustrator and journalist Mona Chalabi brings her special artistic touches to the world of the Hussein family in the new Prime Video series.
Youssef, who voices both the father and his son in # 1 Happy Family USA, says it took him a couple of months to figure out the two big voices. “Something that really helped me was going back and finding the videos I used to do in school when I was assigned book reports,” he recalls. “I watched these videos of myself as a kid, where I had this really raspy and sometimes high-pitched voice. It was my sister who also works on the show in production who found those clips of me as a young boy. She said, ‘Hey, when you were a kid, you had a really funny voice. I think your character should sound like this!’ So, that’s what I did!”

He also says he hopes the show will hold up a mirror to today’s stark socio-political climate in the country. “I just hope that people can watch what it looks like to put a group of people under not only the pressures of the surveillance state but also capitalism. One of the big struggle that this family has that is also shared by many immigrants is that they are in this loop where they’re very concerned about being able to make a living. But, overall, I think this is a show for everybody.”

The first season of #1 Happy Family USA is now streaming on Prime Video.

In the clip, Rovender’s mount sacrifices itself to save Eva from the tar, and their hopes of escape hang on by nail-bitingly thin thread.

The series is executive produced by Tony DiTerlizzi and Bobs Gannaway alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Julie Kane-Ritsch, and Skydance Animation’s John Lasseter, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, and produced by Tony Cosanella.

Nickelodeon today announced the renewal of the original animated series Rock Paper Scissors for a second and third season, each comprising 10 episodes that continue to follow the wacky shenanigans and nonsensical adventures of the titular characters — Rock, Paper and Scissors. Produced by Nickelodeon Animation, Season 2 is slated to debut this fall on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and internationally in 2026.

Rock Paper Scissors embodies the creative and character-driven storytelling we champion at Nickelodeon and the show’s humor and heart has struck a chord with our audience,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. “With an all-star cast that brings incredible energy, humor and depth to every character, we can’t wait to dive even deeper into the hilarious world these three best friends share.”

In addition to the linear series, Nickelodeon has greenlit 20 one-minute shorts to further dive into the character’s lives and adventures. The shorts will debut across Nickelodeon’s ecosystem later this year.

Rock Paper Scissors was the number-one new animated series with K2-11 and K6-11 when it launched February 2024 and is an Annie Award, Children’s & Family Emmys and NAMIC Vision Award-nominated series. Fans can watch Season 1 in full (20 episodes) exclusively on Paramount+ beginning Wednesday, May 28.

Synopsis: Inspired by the age-old tradition of settling things with your best friends, the game comes to life through the adventures of pals Rock, Paper and Scissors — a trio of best friends and roommates who lovingly compete over everything in sometimes laughable but mostly wildly absurd ways.

The animated comedy stars Ron Funches (Trolls, Trolls Band Together) as Rock, an aspiring model and member of the trio with the biggest heart and moral compass; Thomas Lennon (Zoey 102, 17 Again, Reno 911!) as Paper, the wannabe intellectual who dreams of being a famous inventor; and Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko’s Modern Life, Reno 911!) as Scissors, who acts overly confident and always wants to be cool. The series also stars Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live) as Pencil, the trio’s incredibly smart neighbor with a silly sense of humor, and Eddie Pepitone (The Muppets, Old School) as Lou, the angry landlord, who is also a garbage can.

Originally launched in 2019 as a short, Rock Paper Scissors was greenlit for series from Nickelodeon’s Intergalactic Shorts Program. Created by Kyle Stegina (Robot Chicken) and Josh Lehrman (Robot Chicken), the series is produced by Nickelodeon Animation. Stegina and Lehrman serve as executive producers along with Conrad Vernon (Shrek 5) and Bob Boyle (The Fairly OddParents). Production is overseen by Daniel Wineman, Vice President of Original Animation Development. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

For more Rock Paper Scissors, follow the trio on the Nicktoons YouTube channel. In addition to hysterical shorts and clips, full episodes are available to watch now, including “The Birthday Police” and “Paper’s Big Lie.”

Netflix today announced the limelight-worthy roster of voice stars who will bring to life the supernatural, music-driven animated feature KPop Demon Hunters, produced by Sony Pictures Animation. This blend of modern music phenoms and ancient otherworldly danger will premiere on the streamer on June 20. A spate of new images from the CG feature were also revealed for the first time.

Leading the lineup are Arden Cho (Rumi), May Hong (Mira) and Ji-young Yoo (Zoey) as the titular baddy-busters, alongside Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, the leader of a rival boy band with a hellacious secret.

“KPop Demon Hunters is about so much more than just K-pop. It’s really about culture and identity, and who you are and your place in the world. For me, it’s so meaningful to get to be a part of this movie and play Rumi, and I wish I had something like this growing up.”

— Arden Cho (voice of Rumi)

“When I read for Mira, I really felt like the filmmakers had written an alternate version of me. It’s surreal to go from shouting in a recording studio to seeing the film come together, from the visual style to the music and action sequences. What’s magical about animation as a medium is that all of these elements can be endlessly adjusted, then fused together to create an organic whole.”

— May Hong (voice of Mira)

“When I watched KPop Demon Hunters for the first time, it brought to mind all the female action heroes I wanted to be as a kid. The film is about these women who are not afraid to embrace their beauty and their gentleness and their kindness, but they also kick butt. Plus, there’s a really great ecosystem of Korean actors and Korean-American actors and Korean talent all coming together to create something truly unique.”

— Ji-young Yoo (voice of Zoey)

“I still remember the excitement I felt when I first read the script for KPop Demon Hunters. Playing the character Jinu gave me the chance to explore a new way of working. I’m incredibly grateful to directors Maggie Kang, Chris Appelhans, and the amazing cast and crew who supported me throughout the process — I truly enjoyed every moment. It’s been an honor to work with everyone.”

— Ahn Hyo-seop (voice of Jinu)

The film also features the voices of Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, with Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Byung Hun Lee.

Additionally, Netflix revealed that KPop Demon Hunters will feature original songs performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI, Andrew Choi, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav and Lea Salonga. The movie’s all-new original theme song is performed by Jeongyeon, Jihyo and Chaeyoung of TWICE.

“We have an amazing voice cast, and the range of their performances is what gives the film such an original tone,” said director Chris Appelhans (Wish Dragon). “Byung Hun Lee and Ahn Hyo-seop bring authentic K-drama emotion, while Arden, May and Ji-young blend the charisma of legit K-pop stars with the vulnerability and comedy of real young women juggling a dual life like no other.”

“I have been a fan of these incredible artists and their work for many years, so it’s a dream come true to have original songs written and produced for our film by legendary talent such as THEBLACKLABEL,” Maggie Kang (head of story, The LEGO Ninjago Movie), who created the original story and makes her feature directorial debut on this project, enthused. “I also couldn’t be more thrilled about our collaboration with Jeongyeon, Jihyo and Chaeyoung of TWICE. It really legitimizes our film and songs in the K-pop world. It’s proof that we achieved what we set out to do, which is make a real K-Pop group.”

For their part, the TWICE crew commented, “We found it so exciting to be a part of KPop Demon Hunters and connect with these brave characters through music. It felt extra special because it brings together K-pop and animation — two very creative worlds!”

A new trailer was launched this week.

Junk World is a prequel, set 1,042 years before the events of Junk Head, and centers on a robot named Robin (who appeared under the name Parton in the first movie). The indie production was aided by online crowdfunding campaigns, which have raised over $180,000 USD.

‘Ne Zha 2’ Powers IMAX to Record Q1 Box Office

IMAX has reported its highest-grossing first quarter box office yet, taking in $298 million (+12% from last year). This achievement was fueled by a record-breaking Lunar New Year holiday — triple the large format theater’s previous record with $182M — and the phenomenal success of Chinese animated feature Ne Zha 2.

Already the highest-grossing animated feature of all time and the first to surpass $2 billion, among other notable box-office records, Ne Zha 2 (Coco Cartoon / Beijing Enlight) has raked in more than $164M through IMAX alone, making it the company’s most successful local-language animated film and its biggest China release ever.

Other top performers in IMAX’s Q1 include Captain America: Brave New World ($27M), Mickey 17 ($11M) and the rerelease of Interstellar ($10M). Overall revenue rose 10% to $87M, beating Wall Street predictions by nearly $3M.

This year will see a record number of “filmed for IMAX” release. Eight titles filmed with IMAX cameras will roll out, kicking off with Sinners, which this weekend took the domestic box office crown from viral kids’ flick A Minecraft Movie. IMAX expects to turn around $1.2 billion in global box office in 2025. The company has signed up 95 new and upgraded screening systems around the world in Q1.

Animal Farm [Aniventure/Imaginarium]

An array of Hollywood stars will be lighting up the barnyard in Andy Serkis’ new animated adaptation of Animal Farm. Lording over the herd is Seth Rogen (The Studio), who will voice the despotic pig Napoleon in this take on George Orwell’s allegory of authoritarianism, first published in 1945.

The cast also features Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Oscar winner Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Emmy winner Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Kathleen Turner (Serial Mom) and Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel).

Based on the ever-relevant book, the film follows a group of animals who rebel against their human oppressors and take over their farm, only to encounter new challenges as the hunger for power takes hold of a pig named Napoleon. Producers are Adam Nagle, Dave Rosenbaum, Cavendish and Serkis; Harrelson is also an executive producer alongside Matt Reeves.
