The Los Angeles Animation Festival will present the United States premiere of Jan Svankmajer’s new feature film, Surviving Life (Theory and Practice).
Set for Dec. 3-7 at Cinefamily’s Silent Movie Theater, the festival also will feature screenings of Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist, a screening of Pixar’s Day and Night and interview with director Teddy Newton and tribute to special honoree Will Vinton.
A celebrated experimental animator, Svankmajer has stated in interviews that Surviving Life (Theory and Practice) will be his final feature, topping a career that includes such influential works as Conspirators of Pleasure, Dimensions of Dialogue, and Faust.
The work of pioneering clay animation entrepreneur and LAAF festival honoree Will Vinton will be reviewed in a program of his short films, specials and commercials and a 25th anniversary screening of his feature The Adventures of Mark Twain. Vinton will be on hand to introduce his work and for post screening Q&A’s.
Other features slated to be shown include China’s first independent feature film Piercing 1, Japanese feature Redline, Jiri Barta’s In the Attic and independent animator Brent Green’s experimental feature Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then.
