Betty Boop Festival Returns to Wisconsin Rapids

Betty Boop appears to have found a new home in Wisconsin Rapids.

After the success of last year’s inaugural Betty Boop Festival, the town of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., will host its second annual edition of the event from July 28-31.

Organizers are adding several new events specifically targeting children and young people.

“There was a lot last year for all ages,” said festival spokesman David Farmbrough, “but we’re adding more activities for children to appeal to even more families. This year, we’re working with Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools with a program of computer animation during summer school, and adding traditional and computer animation activities at McMillan Library.”

The Central Wisconsin Cultural Center also will be hosting two events of interest to teenagers: The Big Draw, a worldwide event involving communities in drawing and sending images digitally around the world, and an event based on fashion design, runway shows and photography.

This year’s festival also aims to reach out to all parts of the community, with the emphasis that history and the arts are for everyone. “This is a party to which everyone in town is invited,” says Farmbrough. “Most events are free and appeal across the board.”

As well as art exhibitions, the Grim Natwick film festival, an Arts & Collectibles Show, and a stage show, returning guests will be: Denise Hagopian, Los Angeles-based expert in Betty Boop collectibles; Stephen Worth, director of ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Institute; and Ginny Mahoney from Fleischer Studios, granddaughter of Betty Boop co-creator Max Fleischer. More guests will be announced in spring 2011.

In addition, the Festival will help promote and support three charity events: Boys & Girls Club motorcycle ride; Rotary’s Polio Plus walk-run, and Humane Society golf outing. Golden Sands Motorcycle Mania will also run at the weekend, drawing visitors into the area.
