New titles like Anchorman 2 and Walking with Dinosaurs had to take the back seat to Peter Jackson’s mega blockbuster The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The Warner Bros. release brought in another $31.5 million during its second weekend in theaters, making its U.S. cume over $127.5 million and its worldwide gross a stellar $403.8 million.
Frozen, the latest Disney princess landed on the no. three spot in the chart, with a $19.2 million, bringing its domestic take to $191.6 million. According to boxofficemojo, the family movie is ahead of Wreck-It Ralph ($189.4 million) and only a bit behind Tangled ($200.8 million). The movie is on its way to earn over $300 million by the end of its run. Internationally the Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck-helmed pic is still only playing in 60 percent of the international marketplace. It made another $35.1 million this weekend for a foreign total of $152.6 million and a worldwide total of $344.2 million.
Meanwhile, Fox studio’s Jurassic CG-live-action hybrid pic, Walking with Dinosaurs failed to capture the attention of family audiences. The movie landed on the eighth spot during its first weekend in release, earning only $7.3 million domestically. Overseas, the film, which cost $80 million to produce, opened to $13.6 million from 40 foreign markets for a worldwide total of $20.9 million. Directed by industry veteran Barry Cook and Neil Nightingale, Walking with Dinosaurs was animated by Sydney-based Animal Logic.
