Animate Projects, the U.K.-based promoter of experimental animation, has announced a call for submissions for its first ever online exhibition, Animate OPEN. Submissions will be accepted until June 20, 2011, with selected works available to view online starting in July. The exhibit is part of Digitalis, a series of activities taking place throughout 2011 to explore (or confound) expectations of art and digital media.
For Animate OPEN, experimental works by U.K. artists, animators and filmmakers are being sought. Up to ten films will be selected for the exhibition, which will be presented on AnimateProjects.org accompanied by interviews with the artists. The films will also be featured in the Digitalis publication and at other Digitalis events later this year. There is no entry fee.
“We hope that the inaugural Animate OPEN will prove to be a platform bursting with experiment, to inspire and provoke discussions around creativity and the digital. And we are looking forward to discovering some awe inspiring stuff,” says Gary Thomas, director of Animate Projects.
A jury will select the projects to be featured, and two cash prizes will be awarded: a Jury Award (1,000 GBP) and an Audience Award (300 GBP) voted for by exhibition visitors. The jury is comprised of Francesca Gavin (writer, curator and visual arts editor at Dazed & Confused), Rebecca Shatwell (director, AV Festival), Gary Thomas (director, Animate Projects) and David Wilson (artist, music video director). Anime OPEN is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
