‘Inside Out,’ ‘Bear Story,’ ‘Ex Machina’ Win Toon, VFX Oscars

Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out won Best Animated Feature while Bear Story earned the first Oscar for Chile with its win as Best Animated Short Film.

“We want to represent our own voice in animation. a Chilean voice, a Latin American voice,” says Gabriel Osorio backstage in the press interview room. “It’s going to be another kind of visual esthetic and point  of view. … It’s very different, and for those don’t know Latin America, please be our guest.”

Backstage, producer Jonas Rivera and director Pete Docter shared the credit generously with Ronny del Carmen. “He is definitely sharing this with us,” Docter says.

Rivera also commented on the diversity in the animated feature category, with so many very different films from around the world all competing in the category.

Ex Machina won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, upsetting a field that includes this year’s runaway favorite Mad Max: Fury Road and perennial VFX favorite Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The award goes to Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington and Sara Bennett.

The big news so far is six wins for Mad Max: Fury Road: Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. It looked like it could be sweeping the crafts categories before the VFX award went to Ex Machina.

The first award of the evening was the Best Original Screenplay, with Spotlight beating out Pixar’s Inside Out.
