Global Collaboration Produces ‘Tergo’ Short

A collaboration of National Centre of Computer Animation (NCCA) graduates have come together across thousands of miles using social media to produce Tergo, a new short film released today. Conceived by director Charles Willcocks (NCCA 2011 graduate), Tergo is the result of thousands of man-hours given for free by 3D pros and filmmakers from all corners of the world — and even had from some help from director Ron Howard, who stumbled upon the set during filming.

Tergo — from the Latin for “to clean” — is the existential tale of a cleaning robot lost in the bustle of inner-city London. The film is a modern day fable for all those lost and lonely within the urban sprawl. Tergo is the fifth film directed by Charles Willcocks and released by the film collective Pallas Pictures, which he co-founded.

Willcocks assembled a team of his fellow class of ’11 grads to create and animate the robot, who first occurred to the director while watching WALL-E on a tiresome commute home through London. The artists, technicians and everyone involved in the film gave their time for free, with Willcocks directing and coordinating the project while working as a full-time 3D artist. Contributors to the film were located in Brazil, Singapore, India, Catalonia, Turkey, Ireland, Wales and England.

Key creatives on Tergo included Jack Homan, Director of Photography; Tom Le Bon, who wrote, scored and engineered the short’s music; animators Alan Serra, Chau Han Xiang and Patrick Semple; and John Sellings, Lead Compositor. Learn more about Tergo on the director’s website or at pallaspictures.com.
