The Ottawa Animation Intl. Festival (Sept. 26-30) has announced a series of special panels and talks under the “Animation Expose” banner. These talk series showcases artists form a variety of media talking about their careers and showcasing the unsung heroes of the art form.
The series includes:
“You Got the Gig, Now What”
Sept. 28, 10 a.m. (NAC)
To kick off Animation Exposé’s professional development talk series, three esteemed animators talk about what happens after you land that dream job. Speakers will share their insight on navigating this new environment, learning the ropes, managing expectations and setting goals. Take notes on challenges and successes they’ve experienced along the way, plus tips on rocking the new gig and personal dos and don’ts that have helped them flourish.
“Isle of Dogs: Behind the Scenes”
Sept. 29, 11:20 a.m. (NAC)
Puppet Supervisor, Andy Gent and Co-Production Designer, Paul Harrod will offer an in-depth discussion of the design and development of the characters and environments seen in Isle Of Dogs. They will show how Wes Anderson’s distinct artistic sensibilities informed every step of the process from design, through fabrication and ultimately shooting and performance. Drawings, animatics, maquettes and behind-the-scenes photos will provide a detailed background for a variety of clips from the final film. A Q&A will follow.
“Walt Disney Animation Studio: Career Development”
Sept. 29, 2:30 p.m. (NAC)
Each Animation Exposé presentation will kick off with career tidbits blast from Kelsi Taglang (recruiter and outreach supervisor), Walt Disney Animation Studios, covering preparing reels & resumes, getting the interview, following up after, and how to show up if you get the job.
Juan Pablo Reyes (Creative Executive), Walt Disney Animation Studios, partners with writers, artists, and filmmakers during the development of animated features. Reyes will share the philosophy behind creative development and how their partnership with the directors supports the filmmaking process.
“The Anatomy of an Action Sequence”
Sept. 29, 3:55 p.m. (NAC)
Mahyar Abousaeedi (Director of Photography – Camera, Pixar Animation Studios) will share insights to the Camera & Staging department, and the cinematic strategies in crafting action sequences on Incredibles 2.
“An Invisible History: Trailblazing Women of Animation”
Sept. 29, 5:20 p.m. (NAC)
From the earliest pioneers of hand-rendered animated films, to the advent of digital technology, women have been at the forefront of the animation medium, yet their extraordinary contributions have largely gone unrecognized, undocumented and unknown. Join author/animation historian Mindy Johnson (Ink & Paint – The Women of Walt Disney’s Animation), whose groundbreaking research widens the lens to reveal the invisible half of our collected animated past.
