Lamorne Morris to Star in Hulu’s Hybrid Series ‘Woke’

Lamorne Morris (New Girl, Game Night) has been cast as the lead in the new comedy Woke — a live-action series featuring animated sequences inspired by the life and work of cartoonist Keith Knight, which has received a pilot order from Hulu. The project comes from Sony Pictures TV, Olive Bridge Ent. and Cloud Nine Productions.

Morris will play “Keef,” a cartoonist living in San Francisco who is on the verge of achieving mainstream success when an unexpected accident involving the police changes everything — and making him “woke.”

Woke is written by Marshall Todd (Barbershop) and Knight, who also exec produce with Olive Bridge’s Will Gluck and Richie Schwartz, Cloud Nine’s Eric Christian Olsen and Kate Schumaecker, and John Will. Mo Marable (Insecure) will direct the pilot episode.

Morris also appears in this year’s Valley of the Boom (National Geographic) and upcoming projects including The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix), Bloodshot (Sony) and Universal’s untitled Danny Boyle/Richard Curtis flick. He has dipped his toe into animation with guest roles on Lucas Bros. Moving Co. (Fox) and Star vs. The Forces of Evil (Disney).

Keith Knight, a Massachusetts-born cartoonist and musician, is best known for his strips The K Chronicles, (Th)ink) and The Knight Life, each carried by several publications and websites, as well as his strips for MAD magazine Father O’Flannity’s Hot Tub Confessions and Bully Baby. He is currently working on a graphic novel about his brief mid-’80s career a Michael Jackson impersonator.

Knight has received several Glyph Comics Awards, a Harvey Award, Comic Con Inkpot and NAACP History Maker Award.
