Bucheon Animation Fest Selects Lucky 13 VR Projects

Thirteen films have been selected for the first VR Competition of the Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF2019). The 21st edition of Korea’s premiere toon celebration will be held from October 18-22.

Academy Award winner John Kahrs returns to the festival with Age of Sail, having taken the 2017 BIAF Special Distinction Prize for Commissioned Fim for June and opened the 2012 edition with his Disney short Paperman. Danish filmmaking duo Uri & Michelle Kranot’s Nothing Happens is making its way to Bucheon, having won two special prizes at Annecy 2017 and the top prize at Fest Anca last year. Venice Int’l Film Festival selection Ghost in the Shell: Virtual Reality Diver and Korean project The Tide (ep.01 & ep.02) from Dexter Studios also made the program.

The award for Best VR Film will be judged by jury members Mickael Coedel, VFX lead animator and supervisor for Marvel Studios’ Avengers, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Captain America: Civil War; and Sang-jong Shim, Head of New Media Development at 4th Creative Party, the VFX lead for Chan-wook Park’s Old Boy, The Handmaiden, Joon-ho Bong’s Snowpiercer and Okja.
