The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences together with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will present a special evening celebrating the life and work of acclaimed 20th century designer Saul Bass (1920-1996) on Monday, November 14 at 7p.m. at MoMA in New York. Bass created some of the most compelling images of postwar visual culture, often in collaboration with his wife Elaine, and transformed the worlds of corporate identity and graphic design. He also earned notoriety for his work in film—especially his iconic title sequences and collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese.
Special guests will include design historian Pat Kirkham, designer/writer Chip Kidd and graphic designer Kyle Cooper (title sequences, Seven, X-Men: First Class, Spider-Man trilogy). The celebration is part of To Save and Project: The Ninth MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation and will feature the premiere of the Academy Film Archive’s new restoration of Bass’s Oscar-winning short Why Man Creates (1968). The presentation also coincides with the publication of Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design which is designed by Jennifer Bass (the artist’s daughter) and written by personal friend Kirkham.
