Horror Comic ‘Wytches’ Gets Animated for Prime Video

Amazon is bringing another adult-targeted comic-book adaptation to Prime Video — this time venturing into the world of the supernatural vs. the super-heroic. The company has ordered an animated series based on Wytches, a limited run horror created by Eisner, Harvey, Eagle and Inkpot award-winner Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Batman) and acclaimed Scottish artist Jock.

Originally published in six issues from October 2014 to March 2015 by Image Comics, the story takes the mythology of witches to darker, more chilling depths as it follows the Rooks family seeking a fresh start after a tragic accident. What they find is anything but a simple, peaceful hamlet: Ancient monsters lurks beneath Lichfield, New Hampshire, preying on the human residents’ darkest fears and desires.

Amazon Studios animation head Melissa Wolfe describes the project as “[fusing] nail-biting horror and evocative drama while unearthing the dark lore surrounding an ancient burrow of witches,” noting the story is both “haunting and intimate.” Wytches will join Prime Video’s original adult animation offerings Invincible, based on the edgy superhero series by Robert Kirkman (S2 coming this year), and The Legend of Vox Machina, a fantasy adventure based on the Critical Role actual play RPG campaign (renewed for Season 3).

The Wytches series will be executive produced by Snyder and Jock, alongside Plan B Entertainment, Project 51 Productions’ Kevin Kolde) and Amazon Studios.

Snyder told Variety: “Wytches is possibly my most personal work. It’s all about the monsters that dwell beneath the surface of things, both literally and figuratively. I’ve been intimately involved with this animated series from the start, and I can honestly say that I love this show as much as the book, if not more. The animation brings the incredible art by Jock to life, and the episodic format expands the world of Wytches taking the characters and mythology to terrifying new places.”
