Amid the flurry of live-action blockbuster trailers and tweetable commercials debuted during Sunday’s Big Game, Universal dropped a delightfully retro-style promo for Illumination’s fully-animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie — exclusively in theaters on April 7. The spot is a Nintendo-ized take on local business commercials of a certain era (set to, the hip-hip intro from the 1989 DIC/Saban animated series The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!).
We’re the Mario Brothers and plumbing’s our game
We’re not like the others who get all the fame
When your sink is in trouble
you can call us on the double
We’re faster than the others
you’ll be hooked on the brothers!
The Super Mario Bros. Plumbing advert shows Brooklyn/Queens heroes Mario and Luigi rushing to rescue a damsel from a clogged drain, in record time and at a reasonable price.
The video is complemented by a delightfully pre-Squarespace website for the small family business at smbplumbing.com, complete with customer testimonials, job listings and a phone number (929-55-MARIO [62746]) that you can text or call for a message from the proprietor.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film is produced by Despicable Me studio Illumination and co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
