Shapeshifters: They’re just like us! In the new collage animation-inspired teaser for Netflix’s Nimona, viewers are properly introduced to the on-screen version of ND Stevenson’s graphic novel star — a feisty teen fantasy creature ready to tackle adventure in all its forms. Following yesterday’s reveal of a new image, the Netflix Family Summer highlight has also been officially dated for June 30.
Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, Nimona is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are, based on Stevenson’s National Book Award-nominated, New York Times best-selling graphic novel of the same name.
Synopsis: When Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to … just wreak serious havoc.
The movie stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona, Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin, joined by Frances Conroy (The Director), Lorraine Toussaint (Queen Valerin), Beck Bennett (Sir Thoddeus Sureblade), Indya Moore (Alamzapam Davis), RuPaul Charles (Nate Knight), Julio Torres (Diego the Squire) and Sarah Sherman (Coriander Cadaverish).
Bruno and Quane, who previously collaborated at the helm of the Blue Sky/Fox feature Spies in Disguise, direct from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird (Ferdinand, Big Hero 6) and Lloyd Taylor (Spies in Disguise), produced by Karen Ryan, p.g.a., Julie Zackary, p.g.a. and Roy Lee. Stevenson serves as co-producer.
The film’s creative team also includes composer Christophe Beck (Frozen 1 & 2, Trolls), production designers Aidan Sugano (character designer, Spies in Diguise; vizdev, Ferdinand) and Jeff Turley (vizdev, Big Hero 6, Wreck-It Ralph), and animation director Ted Ty, Global Head of Character Animation, Feature Animation for DNEG in Montreal.
