The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards closed its seventh edition with the awards ceremony on Saturday. Streamed worldwide, the Tenerife event was swept by animation from Spain, which won five of the 10 awards.
Robot Dreams (Arcadia Motion Pictures, Lokiz Films), Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger’s debut animated feature, was named Best Film, adding another honor to its international collection. Based on the graphic novel by Sara Varon, the dialog-free story of the friendship between a dog and a robot in 1980s New York City was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, on top of winning best film/animated film honors from Annecy, the Annie Awards, the European Film Awards, the Goya Awards and Sitges.
Robot Dreams was also awarded the Quirino for Best Sound Design and Original Music, for composer Alfonso de Vilallonga.
For the second year in a row, Jasmine & Jambo (Teidees Audiovisuals, Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals) has once again claimed the Best Series trophy. Aimed at preschool audiences, the show stars two characters with a passion for music, relating it to life and emotions and explaining musical concepts. The series is created by Silvia Cortés.
The award for Best Short Film went to Brazil’s Lulina and the Moon by Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo. A poetic work in 2D conceived as a tribute to childhood, the film centers on Lulina, an imaginative little girl who deals with conflicts by bringing her drawings to life. Di Leo was recognized by the 2018 Quirino Awards for his short film Caminho dos Gigantes. Vasconcelos’ works have been nominated and awarded at various international festivals.
The jury for this edition was made up of directors José Miguel Ribeiro (Portugal), Marcela Rincón (Colombia) and Wesley Louis (United Kingdom), together with Zane Valeniece (LTV, Latvia) and Emmanuèle Petry (Dandelooo, France). The 25 finalists were chosen from among 247 submissions.
