Animation Guild and Studios Fail to Reach an Agreement This Week

Following a well-attended rally last weekend, negotiations between the Animation Guild (IATSE Local 89) and the Alliance for Motion Picture and TV Producers  (AMPTP) failed to result in an agreement this week. The two parties will resume negotiations for a new three-year contract in September.

The Animation Guild (TAG)  represents over estimated 5,000 artists, technicians, writers and production workers in the animation industry,. The negotiations with the producers began last Monday. Among the main issues of concerns for animation professionals this year is protection from generative A.I., rampant layoffs and outsourcing of jobs to overseas and Canadian studios.

TAG joined forces with CAA and CLV Economics for an impact studio, which predicted 29% of animation jobs being in danger over the next three years. According to TAG, about one-third of the guild’s animation works have been laid off in the past year.
