Warner Bros. Discovery will win back some points with toon fans, announcing that it is following up the successful one-hour expansion of Adult Swim with another hour dedicated to animated nostalgia. Dubbed “Checkered Past,” the block will feature classic Cartoon Network series like Dexter’s Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Ed, Ed n’ Eddy.
Checkered Past will launch August 28 under the Adult Swim banner on the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim broadcast channel. The new 6 p.m. block will air Monday-Friday, offering both throwbacks as well as reruns of current PG-rated Cartoon Network series like Genndy Tartakovsky’s Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and soon to launch My Adventures with Superman (July 6).
In the first two weeks of its new 7 p.m. start, Adult Swim has seen a 24% increase in viewers 18-59, reaching a peak of 66% on Mondays and 87% on Tuesdays, and +38% for 18-34s. This boost raised the CN/AS to No. 6 among ad supported networks in prime-time, compared to the 12 weeks before expanding the block. A major boost comes from the 7 p.m. show Unicorn, which AS reports as its best launch in over a year and the top-rated new toon in the demo.
