Signaling the increasing recognition of animation’s merits by the wider cinema community, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot has entered history as the second-ever animated feature to receive a nomination from the USC Scripter Awards. Presented by the USC Libraries Board of Councilors, the awards honor the year’s best film adaptation of a printed work, recognizing the original author and the screenwriter.
The Wild Robot screenwriters are Chris Sanders (also director) and Peter Brown, who wrote the original bestselling novel.
Also up in the feature film category are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Nickel Boys and Sing Sing. This year’s television episode nominees are all from live-action series: Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Say Nothing, Shōgun and Slow Horses.
The 37th annual Scripter Awards will be held at Town & Gown on the USC campus in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 22.
Per the awards website, “Scripter celebrates writers and writing, collaboration, and the profound results of transforming one artistic medium into another. It stands as an emblem of libraries’ ability to inspire creative and scholarly achievement.”
Celebrated since 1988, it wasn’t until 2022 when the Scripters recognized an animated feature with a nomination: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, written by Guillermo del Toro, Patrick McHale and Matthew Robbins, based on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio won the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, as well as the Academy Award and many other accolades.
