Digitoonz, Maskeline Team with ‘Drilo and The Gang’ for Major Expansion

Digitoonz Spain, part of Digitoonz Media & Entertainment — a leading animation studio headquartered in India with offices in the United States and Europe — has inked a strategic agreement with Drilo and The Gang, the company behind the children’s brand of the same name, led by children’s composer Andrés Meseguer, and with production company Maskeline for the co-development and global expansion of the IP.

“I am proud to announce this new partnership: Drilo and The Gang is a project with a strong connection to its audience, and it represents a commitment to creating high-quality content,” said Maria Bonaria Fois, President of Digitoonz Spain. “With the support of a top-tier creative team led by Andrés Meseguer, along with his collaborators Carmen García and Jesús Mondéjar, and our partners at Maskeline, we are ensuring the creation of a project with exceptional potential both within Spain and internationally.”

Fina Martinez, Founding Partner and Producer at Maskeline, added, “When I first discovered the project, I immediately believed in the brand and its international potential. It’s an inspirational initiative for new generations. Today, at Maskeline, we’re thrilled to begin this journey alongside our partners Digitoonz and Andrés Meseguer.”

Drilo and The Gang began as a music project under the artistic direction of Meseguer, blending original songs, dance and theater. It has since become a fixture in family entertainment across Spain, continuing its live tours across the territory. This new collaboration marks a significant new phase in the brand’s evolution, with the aim of expanding its narrative universe and establishing it as a global, multi-format children’s entertainment IP.

Drilo and The Gang

“These have been 20 years of hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice, culminating in this important collaboration agreement,” said Meseguer. “We’re embarking on a new chapter with the best possible partners by our side. We share the mission of conveying values through music and our characters, and this step marks a milestone in our journey, as well as an opportunity to bring Drilo and The Gang to an international stage — always staying true to our educational and approachable essence.”

The primary goal of this partnership is to expand Drilo and The Gang’s universe, introducing new formats and reinforcing its potential as a 360º brand. This includes a new 3D animated preschool series consisting of 26 episodes (7 minutes each) to be developed. This audiovisual adaptation will enhance the experience for young audiences, promoting values such as creativity, cooperation and environmental responsibility.

The global expansion strategy also includes bolstering the live show format — which has already tallied over 1,200 performances across Spain — and developing a range of derivative products, including licensing, merchandising, video games and theme parks.

In addition to its presence in theaters, schools and educational institutions, the brand boasts a growing digital community with over 100,000 subscribers and 50 million views on YouTube, where its animated music videos featuring original songs have become highly popular.

Drilo and The Gang’s blend of music, dance and narrative has been made possible through the artistic direction of creator-composer Meseguer and his team led by Carmen García, Creative Director, and Jesús Mondéjar, Music Producer and Arranger, who have successfully integrated entertainment, educational values, and artistic sensibility into an innovative format.

“At Digitoonz, we strongly believe in the power of IPs that combine authenticity, core values, and a long-term vision. Drilo and The Gang embodies all of these qualities: a brand with a rich legacy, a deep connection with its audience, and extraordinary potential for global expansion,” said Vikas Kumar, CEO & Founder of Digitoonz Media & Etnertainment. “We are proud to be a part of this project and to continue supporting content that both inspires and entertains.”

SAG-AFTRA Leaders Head to Washington to Reintroduce NO FAKES Act

Today, a press conference was held celebrating the SAG-AFTRA-supported, bipartisan Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe (NO FAKES) Act as it was reintroduced in the Senate. If passed, the bill — sponsored by Sens. Marsha Blackburn, Chris Coons, Amy Klobuchar and Thom Tillis — would establish a federal right in voice and likeness to protect against unauthorized use of digital replicas in audiovisual works and sound recordings.

“The NO FAKES Act isn’t just about protecting actors, recording artists and broadcasters. Deepfakes can ruin all lives. It doesn’t matter if you’re a public figure or a high school student being exploited by internet creeps,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “It’s time to give humans the power to say no, not my face, not my voice! Thank you Senators Blackburn, Coons, Klobuchar and Tillis for defending the rights of humans in the age of digital clones!”

“In the age of digital clones, deepfakes can be devastating,” commented Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, SAG-AFTRA. “For the creative community, this bill is especially meaningful. SAG-AFTRA members and those who rely on their face and voice for their livelihood will be able to demand platforms remove illegal voice and image clones. Creatives will also be able to seek damages from those who intentionally cause harm. Thank you Senators Blackburn, Coons, Klobuchar and Tillis for reintroducing the NO FAKES Act. As innovation continues to rapidly evolve, it’s time for commonsense legislation that defends individual rights.”

The NO FAKES Act would preserve existing protections at the state level, such as Tennessee’s landmark SAG-AFTRA-supported ELVIS Act and California’s SAG-AFTRA-sponsored AB2602, while providing one strong, consent-based framework for digital replica uses in expressive works nationwide.

Studio 100 Film’s ‘Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle’ Leaps to Market at Cannes

Munich-based sales company Studio 100 Film is set to launch worldwide sales for the new CGI animated feature Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle at Marché du Film, Cannes. This new adventure set in the heart of the Amazon rainforest hails from Tunche Films. Currently in development, Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle is slated for delivery in early 2027, with Studio 100 Film presenting the official teaser and first concept art designs from the film at the upcoming market.

“When I first heard about Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle, I fell in love with it right away due to its heartfelt and wildly entertaining adventure,” said Lorena Booth, Senior Manager Sales & Acquisitions at Studio 100 Film. “This movie follows its main character Dante — a little frog who never quite fits in — until he discovers that his unique gift might be the very thing that can save his world. With humor and heart, this story tackles themes of belonging, which everyone can relate to, alongside the urgent environmental message, while keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.”

Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle follows the story of Dante, a small yet extraordinary Amazonian dart frog with a powerful gift: his skin, when in contact with clouds, can generate rain. This rare and mysterious ability makes him the subject of scientific study — until a test flight goes awry and Dante is unexpectedly dropped into the depths of the jungle. There he stumbles upon a lively forest community of small animals and dreams of becoming one of them. But his toxic nature leads to fear and exclusion. When a fierce forest fire threatens the very existence of the jungle, only Dante holds the key to salvation.

A heartwarming and visually rich adventure, Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle explores themes of friendship, self-acceptance, and environmental stewardship. The film also delivers a strong ecological message wrapped in a story full of emotion, wonder, and resilience. The Amazon region with its abundance of animals and plants is known as the “lungs of the world” due to its significant importance in regulating the global climate.

Peruvian animation studio Tunche Films previously came to international attention for its successful animated feature Ainbo – Spirit of the Amazon (2021), which grossed more than 13 million USD and won the Platinum Award for Best Ibero-American Animated Film in 2022. Tunche Films were also finalists at the 2024 Annecy Festival with David Baute’s animated film Mariposas Negras (Black Butterflies), a Spanish co-production with Ikiru Films, Tinglado Film, Anangu Grup and Televisió de Catalunya (featured in the “Animation! Work in Progress by Annecy” section).

Directed by award-winning filmmakers José Zelada and Cesar Zelada (Ainbo, Kayara, Searching for Hearts), Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle is based on an original idea by César Zelada, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside José Zelada. Executive producers are brothers Sergio, José and César Zelada. Production design is led by acclaimed visual artist Pierre Salazar (The LEGO Movie, Happy Feet, Walking with Dinosaurs).

“With Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle, we want to tell a story that celebrates the power of nature and the courage it takes to embrace who you are. Dante’s journey is deeply personal to us — it reflects the beauty and fragility of the Amazon, and the resilience that lives within it,” said César Zelada.

Targeted at children aged six and up and families, Toxic – Miracle of the Jungle has a planned running time of 84 minutes. Studio 100 Film will present the film at the Cannes Marché du Film (May 13-21). Buyers and industry professionals can find the team at the Résidence Gray D’Albion, Apartment 6B2.

Bienvenidos a Rudo! Meet the Buenos Aires Studio Behind Pixelatl’s 2025 Signal Film

Another exciting edition of Pixelatl’s El Festival celebration of animation, comics and video games is coming to Guadalajara, taking place September 9-13 (elfestival.mx). As part of the Festival’s tradition, a Latin American studio will be responsible for the year’s unique artistic branding, and for 2025 that honor goes to Buenos Aires based Rudo Company.

Specializing in 2D animation, Rudo was founded in 2015 and has since produced a range of short films, clips, music videos and commercials for partners like Apple, Nike, Adidas, Cartoon Network, MTV and many more. The studio has international reach thanks in part to its position on Psyop’s directorial roster for the U.S. and Canada.

Animation Magazine is pleased to introduce readers to Rudo founders Pablo Rafael Roldán and Ezequiel Torres, who shared some of the studio’s notable achievements and the inspirations behind their upcoming Pixelatl trailer:

Pablo Rafael Roldán and Ezequiel Torres [Rudo Company]
Pablo Rafael Roldán and Ezequiel Torres
Animation Magazine: Can you give us a bit of history about your animation company?

Pablo R. Roldán: We founded the studio 10 years ago, Ezequiel Torres and Pablo R. Roldán. We met while studying graphic design at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).  We found our path somewhat by chance, working in advertising, and over time, we specialized in 2D cel animation.

In 2017, when it was still just the two of us, Fer Suniga invited us to co-direct a music video for a new band: “The Wolf” by Siamés. We spent several months working on it, just the two of us. “The Wolf” ended up going viral on YouTube and today has over 200 million views.

Over time, we started growing the team, and today, we are a group that sees every project as a new opportunity to experiment and learn.

What would you say are your specialties?

Ezequiel Torres:  When we start working on a project, whether it’s a commercial or a music video, what excites us most is giving it a unique identity. In this sense, we see animation as deeply connected to design and vice versa.

When I think about “specialties,” I can’t help but feel that Pablo and I, as the studio’s creative leads, complement each other. I tend to focus on the overall “flow” and rhythm of the animation, while Pablo works on shaping a distinct identity through design and storytelling for each piece. I see him as the studio’s “visionary,” always pushing boundaries, while I am the anxious person I am focused on getting things moving.

The Wolf
The Wolf

What are some of the projects you are working on this year?

Ezequiel: This year, we’re excited to keep working with our team on projects that help develop and enrich the stories and aesthetics each of us wants to explore. Right now, we’re working on our ninth music video, this time for Argentine musician Stoltz, telling a story we’ve wanted to bring to life for years.

Original content is also a key focus for us. We’re developing Esther, an 11 episode series (22 minutes each) in co-production with the amazing teams at Sacrebleu (France) and Take Five (Belgium).

Short films are another space where we get to play and experiment. Pablo has his sci-fi project, Love, Unlove, Abduction, and we have new ideas in the works that we can’t wait to share when the time comes.

In 2025, our studio celebrates its 10th anniversary, and a huge part of our journey has been the incredible community of artists we’ve collaborated with on each project. We look forward to creating new opportunities to reconnect and celebrate this milestone together.

Will you have a presence at Annecy this year?

Ezequiel: This year, unfortunately, we don’t have plans to attend. We’ve been to previous editions, and it’s an experience we truly enjoyed and highly recommend experiencing at least once. However, you’ll be able to find us at Pixelatl this year, so feel free to stop by and say hi!

Esther

Can you tell us a bit about the trailer you are creating for Pixelatl?

Pablo: Yes, above all, we’re incredibly excited about this opportunity. The Pixelatl team presented us with a concept and manifesto that are truly inspiring, and they gave us complete creative freedom. We’re very grateful for that because it’s exactly the kind of challenge we love to take on.

As for the cineminuto itself, we’re envisioning it as a journey into collective imagination —  a kind of abstract celebration of creativity. We also want to experiment with the production process, incorporating sequences where our team can explore different ways of telling this creative journey. While creativity is often personal, when shared as a group, it can lead to something truly extraordinary. We believe the production process itself will be an integral part of the final piece.

What were the inspirations behind the trailer’s visuals?

Pablo: I think our main inspiration is the work of Jonathan Djob Nkondo, primarily for his minimalism but also for his sensory-driven storytelling. We want the cineminuto to convey something, but not in a purely narrative way. Our goal is to create a piece that remains engaging even after multiple viewings, one where rhythm and perception take center stage. We like the idea of leaving certain aspects open-ended, trusting that each viewer’s interpretation will complete the experience.

Visual development for Rudo’s Pixelatl trailer

Which animation tools do you use at your studio?

Pablo: At the studio, we use various Adobe programs for design, Toon Boom Harmony for cel animation, and for production, we rely on Miro, Slack and Airtable. We’re always exploring new tools to improve our workflow and collaboration.

What is you take on the animation scene in Argentina and South America in general?

Pablo: The outlook is quite uncertain, to be honest. Our country has been navigating a prolonged period of crisis, and the current government has withdrawn all forms of support for culture. Clearly, developing an animation industry in this context is challenging. However, it’s also an opportunity to prove that we’ve been building an industry capable of sustaining itself beyond state support. We believe the talent within our field is world-class.

It’s inspiring to see our peers pushing forward, developing their own projects, and working with the same passion as always. Nothing has ever been handed to us, and the international industry continues to move forward. We hope our generation doesn’t give up because we certainly won’t. The present may be difficult, but the future will be bright.

"All the Best" - Siamés
“All the Best” – Siamés

What do you love about going to Pixelatl?

Pablo: Pixelatl is a highly prestigious festival, and as Latin Americans, we take great pride in having it as a key hub for animation year after year, amplifying and giving space to voices from the region. It’s a place where artists, creators, and animation enthusiasts come together. Attending always fills us with inspiration and renewed energy, moreover, we always value spaces where students and professionals can meet to continue building the industry we aspire to.

Abrams ComicArts Publishing ‘The Essential Peanuts’ for 75th Anniversary

The Essential Peanuts

A deluxe coffee table book celebrating the 75th anniversary of the beloved comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, The Essential Peanuts (Abrams ComicArts; October 7, 2025; $75; hardcover in a slipcase with a portfolio of bonus extras) by award-winning writer Mark Evanier presents the most iconic and essential Peanuts comic strips with fresh historical and cultural context.

Featuring an introduction by Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell, a foreword by Jean Schulz, and contributions from 16 notable commentators, the volume boasts a design by Chip Kidd plus a portfolio of collectible Peanuts ephemera — including postcards, prints, an embroidered patch, stickers and a facsimile of a classic Peanuts comic book.

“Having loved Peanuts since I was about Charlie Brown’s age (and no more successful at kite-flying), I was thrilled when Abrams ComicArts asked me to spend weeks reading and writing about the comic strip that was so much more than just a comic strip,” says Evanier. “The only drawback was that I tried writing the book sitting on the roof of a doghouse, but I kept falling off.”

The Essential Peanuts builds upon Abrams ComicArts’ Peanuts publishing program, which includes the Eisner Award-winning Only What’s Necessary: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts (Abrams ComicArts; April 2025; $29.99) by Chip Kidd and Geoff Spear.

“As we mark 75 years of Peanuts, this partnership with Abrams ComicArts is a testament to the lasting impact of Schulz’s beloved characters,” says Craig Herman, VP of Global Brand Experiences, & Publishing at Peanuts Worldwide. “Since being introduced to the world on October 2, 1950, Peanuts has been at the forefront of pop culture, and we can’t wait for fans to discover this extraordinary anniversary edition.”

The Essential Peanuts

Timed for its 75th anniversary, The Essential Peanuts underscores how and why the comic strip transcends cultural, generational and linguistic barriers to remain relevant and beloved. By exploring the creative ambition of Charles M. Schulz, his wry commentary on childhood struggles and triumphs, and his enduring influence on art, literature and everyday life, Evanier not only celebrates an incomparable legacy but also reveals the universal appeal at the heart of Peanuts.

In 1950, Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang were first introduced to the world. In the 75 years since, Peanuts has become a global phenomenon, encompassing award-winning animated content, stage shows and live experiences, high profile collaborations, and retail programs around the world. Artists, musicians, philosophers and fans have been inspired by Charles Schulz’s creation for over seven decades and there is no end in sight for this beloved cast of characters who speak so beautifully and simply to the human experience.

The characters of Peanuts and related intellectual property are owned by Peanuts Worldwide, which is 41% owned by WildBrain Ltd., 39% owned by Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., and 20% owned by the family of Charles M. Schulz.

Greenpeace Launches First-Ever NGO Animated Series ‘My Pet Footprint’

Greenpeace East Asia has taken a bold step in eco activism, becoming the first environmental organization to launch an animated comedy series via Kickstarter to help buoy its mission. The 2D project, My Pet Footprint, is a satirical takedown of manipulative messaging from “Big Oil,” created in partnership with animation studio Wit & Wisdom. The series’ pre-launch buzz built up a waitlist of 25,000-plus would-be subscribers ready to come on board.

Synopsis: Set in the early 2000s, My Pet Footprint follows teen Bella Tollman who, instead of getting the dog she desperately wants, is saddled with Betty — a hyperactive, shape-shifting carbon footprint containing the extracted guilty conscience of the entire fossil fuel industry. As the physical manifestation of Big Oil’s collective climate crimes, Betty drags her unwilling teenage companion through time and space to witness environmental destruction firsthand, upending Bella’s carefully constructed social life in the process.

The series introduces a wild cast of characters, including Klepp Shartenheit (the world’s most powerful oil CEO), Thoth (an Egyptian god working as a pool cleaner) and Dr. Manxome (the mysterious “cleaning lady” who extracted Big Oil’s collective guilt) — all bringing climate issues to audiences in revolutionary ways.

“For decades, corporations taught us to blame ourselves for climate change. With My Pet Footprint, we’re flipping their script — and having a hell of a lot of fun doing it,” said Daniel Bird, director at Wit & Wisdom. “The history of climate change is ridiculous — humanity has been maneuvered into the worst possible position by the worst possible people for the worst possible reasons.”

With My Pet Footprint, Wit & Wisdom is building on its track record of creating compelling animated narratives that address global issues. The studio has previously worked on campaigns which helped pressure Unilever to halt rainforest damaging activities and spurred Facebook to commit to 100% renewable energy.

My Pet Footprint

My Pet Footprint and its crowdfunding campaign are anchored by several key points, according to the producers:

  • Reclaiming Manipulated Narratives: While the British multinational oil and gas company BP’s marketing team popularized the term “carbon footprint” to shift blame from corporations to individuals, My Pet Footprint flips this manipulation back on its creators.
  • Unprecedented Creative Access: Backers become legitimate co-creators with opportunities to voice characters, collaborate on dialog or appear as animated characters.
  • Limited Exclusive Rewards: Tiered support packages from Digital Supporter ($30) to Creative Weekend Pack ($9,500) are strictly limited, with high-tier rewards projected to sell out within hours of launch.
  • From Streaming to Social Change: Every dollar raised directly supports script development, animation production and creation of a pilot episode that will attract major streaming platforms.
  • Cultural Intervention Strategy: The series breaks through climate communication barriers using humor that’s angry, weird, sweet and ultimately mobilizing.

“With My Pet Footprint, we’re not just creating entertainment — we’re part of a movement that refuses to be silenced,” said Mikyoung Kim, Project Manager at Greenpeace East Asia. “As corporations try to dominate the narrative, this series pushes rage beyond the placard and into our culture.”

“If we laugh at climate change, we can talk about it. If we talk about it, we’re a mile closer to taking the action the world needs,” Bird concluded. “Our rewards are strictly limited, and with over 25,000 people already on the waitlist, they’ll disappear fast. Don’t miss your chance to help kick My Pet Footprint into reality — Lord knows, reality needs it.”

The Kickstarter campaign runs from April 8 to early May 2025.

‘Lazarus’ Creator Shinichiro Watanabe Discusses the Daredevil Action of His New Adult Swim Anime

Lazarus, which debuts April 5th on Adult Swim, is director Shinichiro Watanabe’s first TV series since Carole & Tuesday (2019). It’s good to have him back. Lazarus is an original adventure, but fans will detect echoes of Cowboy Bebop (1998), Samurai Champloo (2004) and Terror In Resonance (2014). Animators and fans should plan on watching it more than once: Lazarus is an intriguing, complicated series that requires more than one viewing to catch all the details.

Set in 2052, Lazarus centers on a cocky anti-hero: Axel, whose favorite activity is breaking out of jail. Although his initial crime was apparently minor, his sentence was doubled every time he escaped. He’s now serving more than 800 years. Axel shares some traits with Spike Spiegel and Mugen, but he’s a unique, charismatic individual.

Lazarus [Adult Swim]

He’s freed from prison to join a mysterious squad of five agents known as “Lazarus.” Three years earlier, the brilliant neurologist Dr. Skinner released Hapna, a fantastic pain-killer that began as a miracle cure but quickly became a worldwide addiction. The drug had a built-in half-life: In 30 days everyone who’s taken it — which includes most of world’s population — will die. Lazarus represents a last, desperate attempt to find Dr. Skinner and a cure. In just 30 days.

Lazarus [Adult Swim]
Shinichiro Watanabe
Watanabe talked about his most recent work in a Zoom interview in late March. The series began when he imagined a character with a distinctive style of movement. “I’ve been in the business for a long time, and I think one of the key aspects of animation is movement —interesting movement,” he said. “After seeing some people do parkour, I thought, ‘That looks very appealing. I would like to incorporate that into one of my works,’ which led to the idea for Axel.”

“Parkour is very dangerous: If people slip, they can fall to their deaths,” he continued. “Working from that line of thought, I wanted a character who put himself into dangerous situations and became more of a daredevil. I’d also heard that Tom Cruise loves doing dangerous stunts: I wanted to make Axel look like a very young version of Tom Cruise.”

The fight choreography in Lazarus looks different from Watanabe’s previous action series because Chad Stahleski, the director of John Wick and its sequels provided input. “I watched John Wick, and it was fantastic,” Watanabe said. “It looked very new compared to all the old action movies. It also reminded me of my own work. I wanted to find out why, so I reached out to to Chad — and Chad said he was a big fan of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. No wonder I felt some similarities!”

Stahleski offered to help stage the action sequences in Lazarus. Watanabe didn’t think he could afford to accept, but Stahleski told him not to worry about the cost. Watanabe’s work had inspired him: He was happy to do something in return. He and his crew would choreograph fight scenes; Watanabe and his artists would study the videos and chose elements they could heighten and stylize. Some changes were required to fit a different medium and a different character.

Lazarus [Adult Swim]

Axel doesn’t dispatch enemies with a bullet to the head the way Keanu Reeves’ John Wick does. Agile and wiry, Axel has a unique style of movement that reflects his parkour talents. When he comes into conflict with prison guards or thugs, he doesn’t repeat Spike’s staccato martial arts moves or Mugen’s breakdance spins and kicks. Axel has a gymnast’s flexibility and sense of balance, which enable him to to out-maneuver his enemies with menacing grace.

In the fifth episode, Axel fights four murderous security guards in a moving elevator. The sequence is tour de force of understated violence, animated with exceptional panache. “For that sequence, we had one animator who spent half a year working on it, “ Watanabe said. “She was very careful about the movement and tempo and speed of the entire sequence. As a director, I don’t really like to get into the nitty gritty of individual actions. I like to showcase the individual animator who worked on a sequence and let their style shine through. Of course, if it feels too fast or there’s no reality to the action, I’ll step in and make changes.”

Lazarus [Adult Swim]

Axel and his fellow Lazarus agents’ search for the elusive Dr. Skinner takes them down mean streets that may remind viewers of the two-bit towns on Mars and Ganymede in Cowboy Bebop. In a previous interview, Watanabe said, “I wanted to create a futuristic world, but a world that people actually live in. Only movie characters could live in the worlds they depict in Star Wars and other science-fiction films. I wanted to make a world where people live and breathe. Even if it’s just a shot of an empty sidewalk, there should be cigarette butts or some other visible traces that people actually walk through that setting.”

In Lazarus, he adds a strong social commentary on the growing inequality of wealth: “This time, I made the areas that are rich very clean, especially for the tower in the middle of Babylonia City. It’s very rich, so it’s very, very clean. The areas that are poor are very, very dirty, like slums.”

Lazarus [Adult Swim]

Lazarus is rooted in Watanabe’s response to the opioid crisis and to the deaths of favorite musicians from prescription painkillers. It also includes a recurring theme in Japanese cinema, animated and live action: The threat of a rogue technology that the government seems powerless to control. “For me, it’s less about science being out of control and more about things in general being out of control,” Watanabe concluded. “What I believe is most dangerous right now is AI, and it’s not being controlled. That problem figures into Episode #6…”

At the end of the interview, Watanabe reiterated his statement that all his films take place in the same universe — so Axel just might be a descendent of Mugen’s and/or an ancestor of Spike’s.

Lazarus premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami on April 5. It is produced by MAPPA and Sola Entertainment and airs in Japan on TV Tokyo.

The series airs on Adult Swim in English, with new episodes available the next day on Max. English-language encore airings will debut every Thursday at midnight beginning April 10. Episodes in Japanese with English subtitles will debut in the U.S. on Adult Swim and Max 30 days after their English-language premiere.

‘Lackadaisy’ Alums Kickstart Animated Pilot ‘Far-Fetched’

Writer Dave Capdevielle and animator Ashley Nichols are teaming up to create Far-Fetched, an all-new animated pilot about Sesamoid, a fictional band of misfit musicians who are primed to skyrocket to untold fame and fortune. All Sesamoid needs to break through is to manifest their big break — and one pitch perfect music video. There’s just one problem: Before they can even get started, monsters and mayhem break loose to destroy the band.

Far-Fetched is now on Kickstarter from Capdevielle and Nichols, with Iron Circus’ Spike Trotman consulting on a campaign jam-packed with special rewards, including a book full of comics and developmental art, early access to the screening and Q&A, music by the cartoon fictional band Sesamoid, exclusive signed prints, custom sketches, and much more.

Far-Fetched

“Ashley and I became friends during the production of Hazbin Hotel and knew we had a lot of shared creative interests,” said Capdevielle. “She had ideas for some of the characters for what would become Far-Fetched since 6th grade, and always wanted to do something with them. So one day, she approached me about writing an animated short starring the two main characters, Rue and her dog Kira, that became the show’s proof of concept.”

“We’ve already successfully produced a two-minute proof of concept short animation and plan on funding the full pilot episode on our own, so that we may create a show that isn’t limited by the expectations of some business suit named Frank,” said Nichols. “If we don’t screw this up and people actually like it, then we plan on funding an entire series, in order to fully bring to life the story we want to tell. Sure, this is a little uncertain and risky, but it’s a lot better than working with Frank. Screw you, Frank!”

Synopsis: Far-Fetched is about Rue, a walking quarter-life crisis and proud new owner of a mistakenly unleashed DeviantArt sparkle-creature named Kira. Her life in shambles, childhood friend and hubris incarnate Quinn drags her into his band Sesamoid, with fellow members Piper, Warren and Griff. As new friends, the gang embark on a rocky road to relevance in an ancient ice cream truck, but soon learn their hometown of Veilport is far more than meets the eye, becoming unwilling participants in a battle between science and the supernatural.

The voice cast for the Far-Fetched pilot includes Nola Klop as Rue Cervello, Jasmine Luevanos as Kira, J. Michael Tatum as Quinn Huckley, Dani Chambers as Piper Stubbs, Jonah Scott as Warren Webber, Michael Zekis as Drain Creed and Lauren Landa as Dr. Blair Presken.

Far-Fetched

“After Iron Circus’ crowdfunding campaign to make a cartoon of Tracy Butler’s webtoon Lackadaisy became a blockbuster success, we were inundated with offers to collaborate on campaigns,” said Trotman. “And I turned all those projects down, because I need to be passionate about the campaigns I work on, even if I am just working as a consultant. And I love the world that Dave and Ashley have created! Besides, they’re both veterans of Lackadaisy, so they’re practically family.”

Capdevielle currently works as a writer on Lackadaisy and previously worked on the Hazbin Hotel pilot. Nichols worked as an animator and clean-up artist for Animaniacs, Lackadaisy and the Hazbin Hotel pilot.

“I have firsthand knowledge of (and gratitude for) all of the considerable skills and creativity both Ashley and Dave have contributed to Lackadaisy, so there’s no question in my mind that they can pull off completing this spectacular inaugural episode for Far-Fetched,” said Lackadaisy creator Tracy Butler. “It’s just a matter of allotting them the budget to do it. To that end, I wholly recommend hopping aboard for the ice cream truck ride. This project — born out of passion for the artform and love for the characters, and packed with all the skelly boys, werewolves and cryptids the heart desires — is going to be something special.”

Far-Fetched

The campaign features a slew of rewards for backers, including a book featuring original comics, developmental art, character art, design philosophies and more; a computer and phone background package; access to an early online screening of the completed pilot alongside creators, cast & crew, plus a Q&A; a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the short including bloopers and outtakes; a Sesamoid MP3 package featuring every single song from the show’s in-universe band, including instrumental versions; a sticker pack; a digital sheet music pack; exclusive signed prints; custom sketches; comic cameos; and more.

“These guys have Frankensteined together Scooby-Doo, Danny Phantom, Josie and the Pussycats, and post-Y2K internet culture into this colorful, chaotic aesthete I can’t get enough of,” said Lackadaisy director Fable Siegel. “It’s like Warheads for the soul. I’ve been championing this project since its early inception, encouraging the blood, sweat and other hazardous fluids Ashley and Dave pumped into their supernatural brain spawn. This baby is nearly done cooking. They just need that extra oomph from the public to hop the final hurdle.”
