Studio Ghibli Receives Honorary Palme d’Or at 77th Cannes Festival

The 2024 Festival de Cannes is honoring a cinema legend, awarding its Honorary Palme d’Or for the first time to a group of filmmakers: Studio Ghibli. The acclaimed Japanese studio, co-founded by the celebrated directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata alongside producer Toshio Suzuki, “has unleashed a fresh wind on animated film over the past four decades,” the Festival stated in its announcement.

“I am truly honored and delighted that the studio is awarded the Honorary Palme d’or,” Suzuki commented. “I would like to thank the Festival de Cannes from the bottom of my heart. Forty years ago, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and I established Studio Ghibli with the desire to bring high-level, high-quality animation to children and adults of all ages. Today, our films are watched by people all over the world, and many visitors come to the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka and Ghibli Park to experience the world of our films for themselves. We have truly come a long way for Studio Ghibli to become such a big organization. Although Miyazaki and I have aged considerably, I am sure that Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges, led by the staff who will carry on the spirit of the company. It would be my greatest pleasure if you look forward to what’s next.”

The success of Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984 enabled him to establish Studio Ghibli with Takahata in 1985. The storytelling visions of the two filmmakers delivered artistic independent films which swiftly won over mass market audiences, while Suzuki managed the studio with formidable efficiency, balancing the projects of Miyazaki and Takahata; by turns producers and directors.

In 1988, with the simultaneous release of Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro, these creative powerhouses achieved a double success. In 1992, Studio Ghibli was able to begin financing its own feature films, starting with Porco Rosso. In the early years, only the two founders directed their films, but gradually young auteurs such as Goro Miyazaki (Hayao’s son) and Hiromasa Yonebayashi distinguished themselves and joined the Studio.

Through four decades and over 20 feature films, Studio Ghibli won over audiences with works imbued with poetry and with humanistic and environmental commitments. With Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, the studio delivered stories that are as personal as they are universal. They have won prestigious awards, including both Berlinale’s Golden Bear and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away, and more recently another Oscar for The Boy and the Heron, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

In 2001, the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka opened on the outskirts of Tokyo to showcase the animators’ work and rich heritage, as well as to show short films created especially for the museum. In 2022, the Ghibli Park, a hybrid park facility expressing the world of Studio Ghibli, opened in Aichi Prefecture. Goro Miyazaki, the first Director of the Ghibli Museum, was appointed the Creative Development Director to oversee the park construction.

Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, noted, “For the first time in our history, it’s not a person but an institution that we have chosen to celebrate. “Like all the icons of the Seventh Art, these characters populate our imaginations with prolific, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narrations. With Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.”

Cannes was an early proponent of animated filmmaking. At past editions, Walt Disney Studios presented short films (1946) and the feature Dumbo (1947). In 1953, Walt Disney himself took Peter Pan to the Croisette, where René Laloux won a special Jury Prize in 1973 for his first feature, Fantastic Planet. After a long absence, animation returned to Cannes in force with Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004), Persepolis (2007), Waltz with Bashir (2008), which all received awards in the Competition, and Pixar’s Up, which opened the Festival in 2009. Many other films, such as Kirikou and the Wild Beasts, Inside Out, The Summit of the Gods and, more recently, Elemental and Robot Dreams have also left their mark. Moreover, Un Certain Regard welcomed The Red Turtle (2016), Studios Ghibli’s first collaboration with a European production company.

The 77th Festival de Cannes will take place May 14-25. Visit festival-cannes.com for more information.

GKIDS Bringing 4K Restoration of ‘Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence’ to Theaters for 20th Anniversary

Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence

GKIDS has acquired the theatrical distribution rights for North America to Mamoru Oshii’s animated feature Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. In celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary, GKIDS will release an all new 4K restoration of the film in cinemas nationwide this summer, following its premiere this May at the Chicago Critics Film Festival at the historic Music Box Theatre.

“We’re honored to be working with the team at Production I.G in bringing this visionary film, from a true auteur, to theatrical audiences in North America,” said GKIDS Director of Acquisitions and Development Rodney Uhler. “Mamoru Oshii was and remains, in many ways, a filmmaker ahead of his time so we’re thrilled to be able to share his film, with a beautiful, 4K remaster, with new and old audiences alike.”

First released in 2004, the film is director Oshii’s follow up to his epoch-making 1995 feature Ghost in the Shell, based on the manga created by Shirow Masamune. Imagined as a standalone return to the world of Ghost in the Shell, the story is a cyberpunk mystery centered on the character Batou from the original film.

Synopsis: In the year 2032, the line between humans and machines has been blurred almost beyond distinction. A string of murders perpetrated by a prototype android model has drawn the attention of Public Security Section 9, a unit specializing in counter cyber-terrorism. With none of the victims’ families pressing charges, suspicions arise regarding the nature of the androids and their production company. In the course of the investigation, the almost entirely cyber-bodied agent Batou, and his still human partner Togusa embark on a journey through a technological dystopia, taking on ferocious Yakuza thugs, devious hackers, government bureaucrats, and corporate criminals to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence [Production I.G]

Like the 1995 film, Innocence was brought to screen by Production I.G, and features a score by composer Kenji Kawai. Production I.G co-founder Mitsuhisa Ishikawa also returned as producer, joined by Academy Award-winning producer and Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki. The film celebrated its international debut in competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival — the first and only anime in history to compete for the Palme d’Or.

The acquisitions deal was negotiated between Rodney Uhler of GKIDS and Francesco Prandoni of Production I.G. The studio’s features A Letter to Momo (2011), Giovanni’s Island (2014), Miss Hokusai (2015) and The Deer King (2021), are also distributed by GKIDS.

‘Robot Dreams’ Boots Up NYC Theatrical Run Starting May 31

North American distributor NEON announced today that Robot Dreams, the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated animated feature debut of Spanish director Pablo Berger (Blancanieves), will open in New York City on May 31 at the Film Forum and AMC Lincoln Square.

Based on the graphic novel by Sara Varon, the dialog-free, 2D-animated movie tells the story of Dog, a lonesome canine living in 1980s NYC. One day, Dog decides to build himself a robot companion. Amidst the bustling cityscape, their friendship blooms — until one summer night, Dog is forced to abandon Robot on the beach. Berge notes that he was attracted to the original story in part because of its “subtle emotional observations about human relationships, love and loss.”

Robot Dreams made its premiere at Cannes 2023, followed by a screening at Annecy and theatrical releases in Spain and France at the end of the year. In addition to its Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, the film’s many accolades include two Goya Awards (Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Animated Film) out of four nominations, the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature – Independent, plus four nominations, and best feature film honors from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival.

Berger directed the pic and wrote the screenplay, as well as producing alongside Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Sandra Tapia, Jérôme Vidal and Sylvie Pialat. Robot Dreams is produced by Arcadia Motion Pictures (Spain), Noodles Production (France), Les Films du Worso (France), the Spanish public television service RTVE and platform Movistar Plus+.

Comedy Central Orders ‘Golden Axe’ Animated Series Based on Sega Games

Golden Axe - SegaComedy Central announced today a 10-episode order of Golden Axe, a new animated series based on the popular Sega video game series, featuring a star-studded cast including Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart. The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.

Synopsis: In a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s 1989 video game series, Golden Axe follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.

Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder.

Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest, Community) is Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life. He hopes his can-do attitude can make up for his inability to actually do stuff.

Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty, Interior Chinatown) is Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit.

Liam McIntyre (Spartacus, The Flash) is Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and sweet golden retriever demeanor. His brawn outweighs his brains, but his heart outweighs his brawn.

Carl Tart (Grand Crew, Star Trek: Lower Decks) as Chronos “Evil” Lait, originally from Golden Axe III, is a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that’s how Chronos describes himself. In reality he’s uncomfortably cheesy and can’t read a room.

Golden Axe is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Sony Pictures Television; and Original Film. Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the series, with Chandler serving as showrunner. Sega’s Haruki Satomi (President/CEO of Sega Sammy Holdings Inc.), Shuji Utsumi (President/COO of Sega Corporation) and Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles, Streets of Rage) will also executive produce alongside Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Ascher of Original Film. Titmouse (Big Mouth) serves as the animation studio for the series with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina serving as executive producers.

Animated Feature ‘Ghost Cat Anzu’ Selected for Cannes Directors Fortnight

A rare honor has been bestowed with the news that international co-pro Ghost Cat Anzu has been selected to screen in the Directors Fortnight program. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation (Japan) and Miyu Productions (France), the film was recently picked up by GKIDS for North American distribution this year.

Animation artist Yoko Kuno (Land of the Lustrous), who directs the fantasy-adventure with live-action helmer Nobuhiro Yamashita (Linda Linda Linda), shared a handwritten message to Twitter (complete with Anzu doodles), saying she was happy to share “the wonderful news” with everyone who worked on “this very handmade” film. Kuno added thanks to Yamashita and producer Keiichi Kondo, offering: “Please let me treat you to a big piece of meat in Cannes!”

Ghost Cat Anzu Based on the manga created by Takashi Imashiro, Ghost Cat Anzu centers on Karin, an 11-year-old girl abandoned by her father at her monk grandfather’s house in small Japanese countryside town. Her grandfather asks Anzu, his jovial and helpful (although rather capricious) ghost cat, to look after her. The meeting of their strong characters causes sparks, at least at the beginning…

The film was shot entirely in live action prior to being rotoscoped in 2D animation. The cast both performed for the footage and voiced the animated characters, led by Mirai Moriyama (Inu-oh, Shin Kamen Rider) as Anzu and Noa Goto (Saitama Host Club, Sister) as Karin.

Directors Fortnight is a non-competitive sidebar independent from but sanctioned by the Cannes Film Festival. The selection spans all lengths and genres, guided in its selection purely by “a filmmaker’s attendance to mise en scene, and their unique mode of artistic expression.”

WB Animation Adapting ‘Meerkat Manor’ for the Big Screen with Seth Green & Tracy Falco

Warner Bros. Discovery today announced that the global phenom nature show Meerkat Manor is getting a theatrical animated feature adaption from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. The project will be produced by Seth Green and Tracy Falco of The Green Room; executive producers are Caroline Hawkins and Clare Birks of Oxford Scientific Films (OSF, owned by ITV Studios) who created the original series.

“As we continue to grow our animated feature film slate, we are excited to bring the beloved Meerkat Manor from WBD’s Animal Planet to the big screen,” said Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. “Along with our partners Tracy, Seth, OSF and ITV Studios, we look forward to creating a photoreal animated family adventure for the next generation and seeing our meerkat friends make their feature film debut in way they’ve never been seen before.”

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Animal Planet first aired Meerkat Manor in 2005, with the series becoming the network’s highest rated show over its four seasons. The Emmy-nominated series reached 204 million households in more than 160 countries on the Animal Planet platform alone.

The documentary drama follows the Whiskers, a family of meerkats, as they struggle to survive in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. In the spirit of Happy Feet, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation brings the Whiskers family on a new adventure using photoreal animation.

“It’s 20 years since we experimented with a wildlife soap opera in a London basement, and now here we are,” Hawkins remarked. “What greater evidence could there be of the enduring appeal of meerkats? I am sure they would be thrilled at attaining stardom in Hollywood! Warner Bros. is the natural home for this movie, and I am delighted to be partnering with Tracy, Seth and Bill whose visionary expertise is second to none.”

Disney Celebrates 100th ‘Chibi Tiny Tales’ Adventure

Having just marked the centenary of the world-famous studio, Disney has hit another milestone with the 100th episode of Chibi Tiny Tales!

The 100th episode features Dr. Doofenshmirtz, the infamous villain of Phineas and Ferb, who creates a ray that turns everything into cake. Will Perry the Platypus be able to give the evil scientist his just desserts? (Watch the full episode at the bottom of this post.)

To mark the occasion, all 100 Chibi Tiny Tales — featuring characters from DuckTales, Big City Greens, Amphibia, High School Musical, Descendants and more — aired as an extended supercut episode on Disney Channel this weekend, and are now available in a single video compilation on YouTube.

The original short-form animated series features beloved Disney/Pixar characters reimagined in chibi form — inspired by the super-deformed caricature style originating in Japan. Since debuting in 2020, these bite-sized episodes have become one of the most-watched series on Disney Channel YouTube (8 million viewers monthly).

The popularity of Chibi Tiny Tales has also expanded into its own long-form spin-off series, The Chibiverse on Disney Channel and Disney+. The Season 2 finale airs Saturday, July 20 with more Phineas and Ferb, where Perry the Platypus gets a voice for the very first time.

In his new role, Mistry has relocated from India to the company’s state-of-the-art studio in Manila, Philippines, which was recently featured on CNN in a special about the growing global reliance on the Philippines for goods and services, including premium animation production.

Mistry joined TDA last year as a consultant and, as COO, will now oversee the studio’s operations, including a team of 300-plus artists. The newly appointed exec will draw on his professional experience to usher the 25-year-old studio through its next chapter delivering animation for its client roster, which has included Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, Disney and Warner Bros., among others.

Mistry, who most recently served as CEO of Rocksalt Interactive, began his career as a filmmaker, crafting both industrial/corporate content as well as TV commercials. His passion for both the creative and business sides of the animation process led him to transition into animation production over 20 years ago. Prior to Rocksalt, he served as Vice President of Production at Technicolor Animation & Games, India, where he oversaw its significant growth and led the studio to seven Emmy Award wins for their animation work.

Acquired by Grom Social Enterprises in 2016, Top Draw Animation handles production and delivery for a diverse pipeline of animated series, movies, specials and short-form projects. The studio’s many credits include Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Being Ian, Martha Speaks, George of the Jungle, Johnny Test, Static Shock, My Little Pony, The Guava Juice Show, The Tom and Jerry Show and The Loud House, to name a few.

Last month, Grom also entered into a non-binding letter of intent to acquire Texas-based Arctic7, and tap into the $180 billion gaming market — $20B of which is gaming for kids — and explore synergy opportunities across Grom’s subsidiaries. Arctic7 provides a robust suite of full game and co-development services alongside its own intellectual property development within gaming, and virtual production services for the movie and TV industry. Grom aims to complement its existing entertainment offerings of safe social media for kids and its growing catalog of original intellectual property with a move into gaming and its attendant revenue growth opportunities.

Keanu Reeves Voicing Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

On the heels of a very busy CinemaCon presentation for Paramount Pictures last week, John Wick and Matrix film franchises star Keanu Reeves has revealed that he will proved the voice of fan-favorite character Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film was sneak peeked during Thursday’s presentation, offering a first glimpse at this incarnation of the black-furred hedgehog. The pic will open December 20.

Created by game director Takashi Iizuka and writer Shiro Maekawa for the 2001 SEGA game Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow is a mercurial antihero in the franchise, sometimes allying with Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (as in the big screen threequel) and sometimes with Sonic.

Shadow the Hedgehog led his own self-titled game (2005) and has appeared in the animated series Sonic X (2003), voiced by Jason Griffith; Sonic Boom (2014), voice by Kirk Thornton; and Netflix’s Sonic Prime, which launched its third and final season in January, voiced by Ian Hanlin.

Sonic the Hedgehog also features the voices of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik, as well as James Marsden, with Tika Sumpter, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler and Alyla Browne. Jeff Fowler returns as director.

In addition to this memorable turn as the live-action “Sage” in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Reeves’ notable animation credits include playing Batman in DC League of Super-Pets, Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 and reprising the role of Neo for The Animatrix. Upcoming, he is working on the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, Constantine 2 and both the live-action movie and anime series adaptation of BRZRKR, the comic he co-created and wrote with Matt Kindt.

Cartoon Next 2024: Three Days of Looking for the Next Big Animated Things

Last week, the 2024 edition of the Cartoon Next event offered an intriguing look at the possibilities and future of animation in Europe. Curated by Vanessa Chapman and organized by Laura Jarka, Cartoon Next is an animation training event run by the Cartoon association in Marseille, and it consists of three strands — keynotes containing presentations by experts and studios, pitches for current transmedia projects by established studios that are evaluated by industry professionals, and a separate pitching competition for students at local animation schools.

Among the keynotes, one of the most anticipated was by Dr. Mhairi Aitken of the Alan Turing Institute, who spoke on the opportunities and risks for children when it comes to the prevalence of artificial intelligence, which has exploded since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, shocking the world — not to mention people actually working in the field of Ethics in AI. The key takeaway was that children must be involved and consulted at every stage of AI research, because they are not the “future,” they are the “here and now.”

Another essential presentation was by Alex Cameron of Parrot Analytics, who has developed a metric to determine which series have a buzz about them and thus which type of shows are most likely to drive viewers to paid streaming services. Meant as an antidote to the current doom-and-gloom in the industry (it’s always encouraging to see brands do massive numbers), it was a fascinating insight into how unorthodox ways of calculating viewer interest are creating demand for certain genres amongst the streamers. You could see some of the audience already thinking of ways to game the system for their own IPs in future, but since Parrot Analytics are constantly refining their methods, that may be chasing a moving target.

Other technical subjects covered were a rare talk from Epic Games’ Ben Minall about Metahuman in Unreal Engine, Spatial Computing presented by Thomas Bedenk, and AI-created animation from The Dor Brothers, the latter presentation having a disclaimer at the start to not ask the obvious questions about copyright, job security for animators or Skynet so that the audience could actually learn about the process. There were some contentious questions at the end but the organizers had cleverly scheduled it to segue into a cocktail party so the enthusiasm to stay and argue was dampened somewhat.

In a presentation on the popularity of anime, Manuel Cristóbal spoke about The Glassworker, the first hand-drawn 2D animated feature from Pakistan, directed by Usman Riaz who is clearly a Studio Ghibli fan and has brought that sensibility to his anime-inspired film. Other sessions included Ariane Suveg and Sébastian Onomo talking about the initiatives in Africa to boost local animation such as the Pan-African Animation Workshop, and talks by broadcasters and publishers on what they are currently looking for and their thoughts on the future.

There were a couple of studio spotlights, one from France’s Bobbypills, which specializes in adult animation, the other from Ireland’s Studio Meala, which animated two of the recent Kizazi Moto anthology episodes for Disney and are currently in production on Doodle Girl, a €2 million series fully financed in Ireland.

Two individual productions had case studies; Hungary’s award-winning Four Souls of Coyote and Samuel, a beautifully-observed series of touching black & white hand-drawn shorts by Emilie Tronche produced in both vertical and horizontal formats to make the most of social media virality.

There were eight pitches showcased at Cartoon Next, chosen for their deliberate transmedia plans. There had already been some feedback given by the experts, and adjustments made, prior to the audience seeing the projects, and the experts then gave live comments on the updated pitches. This ensured a higher level of quality and more valuable insights for both the pitchers and the audience.

Two pitches were based on short films that then had a VR experience attached to them: Fonce from CINÉ-LITTÉ Productions and Green As Hell from 6X2. Both coincidentally had dark themes and serious messages.

Cloudy & Stormy is a project from Poland based on two dogs which will have games and comics developed alongside a TV series, in a similar way to No Pets! Tinies Rule the World, which is an Italian property that won the Pitch Me! contest at Cartoons on the Bay in 2023.

Coming from Finland’s Fiilin Good Films, Joy Eternal is a 13 x 11’ TV series that plans comic books, games and a feature film spin-off. In contrast, starting with a feature film, Sidi Kaba – Guardians of the 1000 Kingdoms by Special Touch Studios is a 2D puzzle platformer game that will be tied into the upcoming movie Sidi Kaba and the Gateway Home, which hopes to bring more awareness of African cultural narrative.

The Broos by Bobby Prod (yes, the people from Bobbypills) is another black & white hand-drawn show — this time a comedy based around two young men having a bromance — created by David Mirailles. The project was formerly known as Les Groos and began life as a comic and then a web animated project, finding success on TikTok and Instagram.

Of all the pitches, Deco’s Records by Ireland’s Wiggleywoo was probably the most transmedia, in that the fundamental concept revolves around a record label with several animated bands, and will indeed be the first fully animated record label. So unlike the other pitches, it’s not starting with an existing series or film. With a consistent style running through all the animation, but different musical genres covered by the various bands, there are plenty of opportunities for a spin-off web or TV series, and a feature film based on one of the bands is already planned.

Each of the pitches was already solid as a standalone concept, some having already proved themselves in their market, and Cartoon Next gives a fascinating insight into the process of creating added value to a brand in the transmedia space.

At the closing of the event, three prizes were awarded for the student Mini-Pitch workshop, judged by local industry figures. The Prix de la Région Sud went to Goli Atefi from École MoPA for Soraya, the Prix Do Not Disturb went to Lucie Donadio from École MoPA for Le Dernier Lancement, and the Prix Cartoon Springboard went to Eurielle De Thoury, Marin Cadin, Lou Moncollin, Angel Knowles & Colin Lagarde from Lycée Marie Curie for Les Archives.

CartoonNext will be returning in April 2025. If you want to know what’s up and coming in the European animation industry, you should check it out.
