New Reviews of Miyazaki’s ‘The Wind Rises’ Are In

1

Following the news about Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, we tracked down some of the new reviews of his latest (and now possibly final movie) The Wind Rises, which screened at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals recently. The maestro’s 11th animated feature has been holding tight to the No. 1 spot in Japan, and has made over $88 million since its release on July 20th. Disney’s Touchstone banner will reportedly release the film for an Oscar-qualifying run on November 8 this year.

Here is a sampling of the somewhat mixed reviews of the film from English-language press.

Xan Brooks of The Guardian writes:

“The latest from Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki looks astonishing but fails to face up sufficiently to the politics of its subject – genius fighter jet designer Jiro Horikoshi… Here is a film with a clean outline and a foggy center. I wanted to love it, tried to love it and then went down in flames. It turns out that it is not always possible to view the beauty in isolation. Sometimes you need to take a long, hard look at the outside world and then perhaps connect the two.”

“Naturally the animation is a joy to behold. The film’s crisp colors and commanding lines summon up a ravishing portrait of pre-war Japan with its puffing steam-trains, huddled neighborhoods and lulling nocturnal tram-rides through town. Some of the setpieces (most notably the apocalyptic earthquake that leads to the burning of Tokyo) are the equal of anything the director has produced in Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. But the film itself is genteel to a fault. It’s too polite, it needs more bite. It lets enigmatic Horikoshi off the hook, bobbing out to the clouds, forever out of reach.”

Scott Foundas of Variety calls the film hauntingly beautiful.

He writes, “As grown-up as 2008’s Ponyo was tot-friendly, Miyazaki’s 11th feature draws a sober, socially astute portrait of Japan between the two World Wars, marked by flights of incredible visual fancy, harrowing images of poverty and destruction, and touches of swooning romance. Already a major hit at home, Wind will prove a trickier sell offshore than the helmer’s more familiar fantasy adventure pics, but should soar with animation and aviation buffs, and discerning arthouse goers of all stripes.”

“If that romance is the only part of Wind that feels a tad too leisurely in its pacing, it’s a small quibble with a film that otherwise affords so much narrative and sensory pleasure. Miyazaki is at the peak of his visual craftsmanship here, alternating lush, boldly colored rural vistas with epic, crowded urban canvases, soaring aerial perspectives and test flights both majestic and ill-fated. ‘Airplanes are beautiful dreams,’ notes Caproni in one of pic’s fantasy sequences. So, too, this movie about them.”

Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter finds the film’s visuals shout out that life is wonderful.

She notes, “The ambitious The Wind Rises is something of a special case that will divide audiences into two camps, those who find it an unforgettably beautiful and poetic ode to life, and those who tune out to its slow-moving second act, which can wear down the patience of even the well-disposed. On the other hand, the daring subject — the engineering of technically advanced war planes by the Axis powers for use in the Second World War – is so honestly handled it should not present a problem for Western viewers…The war itself remains off-screen, except for a chilling final vision of vapor trails clawing the air above ugly dark clouds, and below them a cemetery of metal pieces from fallen planes. “Not a single plane came back,” says Jiro disconsolately. “That’s what it means to lose a war.” This attitude of regret, but not apology, makes The Wind Rises a very honest film from a great Japanese artist.”

It’s Official: Hayao Miyazaki Is Retiring

Beloved Japanese animation icon Hayao Miyazaki is retiring, according to Koji Hoshino, president of Studio Ghibli. The news was announced at the Venice Film Festival where the 72-year-old helmer’s latest movie The Wind Rises is screening in competition.

“Miyazaki has decided that Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) will be his last film, and he will now retire,” Hoshino said.

More details are to be revealed at a news conference in Tokyo next week.

To date, Miyazaki has directed 11 animated features over 34 years, including critical and global hits such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and the 2002 Oscar-winning Spirited Away.

The Wind Rises has been a huge hit in Japan since its release six weeks ago and has made over $80 million. Disney’s Touchstone has picked up the film for distribution in North America. The film has been the cause for some controversy as it centers on the life and times of Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Japanese conservatives have criticized the film’s antiwar stance, while South Koreans have accused him of romanticizing the plane that became a symbol for the Japanese military WWII.

In a 2011 interview with Cut Magazine, Miyazaki explained…

“My wife and my staff would ask me, ‘Why make a story about a man who made weapons of war?’ and I thought they were right. But one day, I heard that Horikoshi had once murmured, ‘All I wanted to do was to make something beautiful.’ And then I knew I’d found my subject.”

Throughout his career, Miyazaki has announced that he’s retiring from filmmaking twice before.

Germany’s YEP!TV to Air Boy-Targeted Toons

From September 4, the new German media company YEP!TV will begin broadcasting children’s and family programing on free-TV channel ProSieben MAXX. The outlet will primarily target a male viewership, between 6 and 13 years of age. Former Disney Channel, Jetix, EM.TV, Viacom and ProSieben executive Karola Bayr is YEP!TV’s Berlin-based CEO.

“Exactly a year ago, I was asked to come on board, after working mostly international for these companies. I wanted to go back to my roots, also in the German tv-industry,” says Bayr. “Within the German landscape of children’s television there are only three dedicated kids channels, KiKa, Super RTL and Nickelodeon. Comparing the size of our market, you will find more kids channels in smaller countries like UK, France, Italy and Spain than in Germany.”

She pointed out that current German kids’ channel focus more on girls or both genders, while YEP! will target a boy demographic.

“We’ve found potential within the male target group, a few years ago the target group for pay TV channel Jetix. We have always said: if you want to enter the market we need to have this clear positioning, also within the advertising market. Similar to Jetix we are considering the launch of a YEP! magazine.”

When asked about Disney Channel Germany, which launches in January 2014, and Super RTL which recently inked a deal with DreamWorks, Bayr says she doesn’t see them as direct competition.

“The German kids market will change for sure for the very first time in many years. We don’t see Disney or Super RTL as huge competitors, mainly YEP! will focus only on boys 6-13 years. This will be our big advantage. We are aiming on a market share between 3-5%.”

While YEP! is a joint venture between Mainstream Media AG and m4e AG, the production and coproduction company behind the series Mia & Me, it won’t be airing that show since it targets girls. Bayr says they will air the company’s other boy-targeting show Storm Hawks, which is produced by Canada’s Nerd Corps.

Bayr adds that the channel will mostly find its content from Japan, U.S. and Europe.

“At our launch we will have animation series only but we will consider live action series in the future too,” she notes. “In the long term, we will broadcast 80% animation and 20% live action.”

On September 4th, ProSieben MAXX will begin its YEP! schedule with Pokémon, Men in Black, Yu-Gi-Oh! and One Piece, dubbed in German. YEP! will air two programming from 6 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. pm during weekdays and on weekends from 6 to 11 a.m and 2 to 6 p.m.

Pixar’s ‘Monsters University’ Jumps the $700 Million Mark

Disney/Pixar’s popular summer prequel Monsters University passed the big $700 million worldwide box office mark on Thursday (Aug. 29). Directed by Dan Scanlon, the Pixar title is now the fourth top-grossing film of the year, right after Disney’s Iron Man 3 ($1.2 million), and Universal’s Despicable Me 2 ($806.8 million) and Fast & Furious 6 ($786.7 million).

It’s also the fourth Disney/Pixar title to jump $700 million after Toy Story 3 ($1.06 billion). Monsters University is also jumping over Toy Story 3 to become Pixar’s biggest release in China, with over $19 million in box office in that country.

The film, which opened in the U.S. on June 21, was produced with an estimated budget of $200 million. It’s the fourth Disney/Pixar movie to cross the $700 million barrier. The record-holder for most box office is still Toy Story 2 with $1.06 billion, followed by Finding Nemo with a $922 million cume and Up with $731 million.

Monsters University hasn’t opened in Korea yet, but it will debut in that country on Sept. 12.
