Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili has announced it will exclusively premiere Shadows of the Void on April 10. The sci-fi project marks studio Winsing Animation’s (GG Bond, GoGoBus) first anime drama, and unfolds as two spirited girls confront a catastrophic threat known as the Voidflux to protect their home world.
Infused with rich Chinese cultural influences, the series intricately weaves elements such as character attire inspired by Chinese motifs and combat sequences rooted in traditional martial arts like Wing Chun. The landscapes of the “Sand Zone” draw inspiration from the ancient Chinese city of Dunhuang.
Utilizing cartoon rendering over 3D CG, Shadows of the Void strives to maintain the artistic style of traditional 2D animation while seamlessly incorporating smooth three-dimensional effects. The production leveraged Autodesk Maya and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 in its pipeline to produce the distinctive visuals.
Shadows of the Void features dual female protagonists, Coral and Yujia. The series explores their contrasting personalities, adding depth and complexity to the storyline. Coral’s infectious optimism inspires those around her to embrace their beliefs, while Yujia’s introspective journey reflects the path of self-discovery.
“We aim to showcase the multifaceted strength of women through a distinctive lens,” explains Lu Jinming, Chief Director of Winsing Animation.
In addition to its premiere collaboration with Bilibili, Winsing Animation is actively seeking partners to introduce Shadows of the Void to international audiences.

Following the conclusion of its 27th annual event, New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) announced its 2024 award winners on Thursday. NYICFF 2024 took place March 2-17 at venues throughout New York City and in Westchester and The Hamptons.
“What a thrill it was to be back in theaters with our enthusiastic audience and our incredible filmmakers, coming together through a shared love of film and art,” said NYICFF Executive Director Nina Guralnick. “The profound impact these films have on young people, and our audience’s ability to engage with such sophisticated work, never ceases to amaze us and remind us of the importance of diverse, meaningful storytelling no matter how old you are.”
NYICFF Award-winning films were determined by the votes of audience members ages 3-17, audience members ages 18+, and its esteemed jury. The Unstoppable Kids Prize, co-presented with Shine Global, recognizes a film that highlights the resilience and strength of children in the face of adversity.Dounia – The Great White North was named the winner of the Unstoppable Kids Prize and will be awarded $2,500 and an invitation to participate in Shine Global’s Resilience Awards events.
“The film beautifully captures Dounia and her family’s resilience as they adjust to their new home as refugees, illustrating both the power of compassion and the importance of embracing differences,” said Alexandra Blaney, Creative Director of Shine Global. “Dounia and her circle of friends and neighbors, all exhibit an unstoppable spirit of optimism and joy. The film exemplifies our vision of a world in which children can thrive and we are honored to present the Unstoppable Kids prize to Dounia – The Great White North.”
Dounia – The Great White North
Winners of NYICFF’s Jury Awards were the animated short Magic Candies and live-action contender Unibrow. These Jury Award winners are now qualified for consideration for the 97th Academy Awards next year.
Juror Benjamin Renner called Magic Candies “an absolute delight that hooked me from the beginning to the end.” Ilana Glazer applauded Unibrow: “This piece was so specific it was universal. Told viscerally with a full palette of emotions, Unibrow is an example of excellent storytelling.” (All Jurors voted on both awards.)
This year’s jury included Jarelle Dampier (animator and director, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Guillermo Martinez (Head of Story, Sony Pictures Animation); Matthew Modine (Oppenheimer), Chris Nee (Emmy-winning writer, producer & creator, Doc McStuffins), Peter Ramsey (Oscar- winning director, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Benjamin Renner (Oscar-nominated and NYICFF Award-winning director, Ernest & Celestine, Migration), Ira Sachs (Passages), Phillipa Soo, Ellen Su (producer, director & head of artistic recruiting at Titmouse Animation) and Uma Thurman.
“I’m so pleased that the riot of glorious styles and themes in these shorts awards celebrate the beauty of difference in young people,” said NYICFF Director of Programming Maria-Christina Villaseñor. “Whether their point of view is extended through a translucently tempting treat, as in Magic Candies, culturally enhanced beneath an ample brow, like in Unibrow, emboldened by the daring cape of proud freak flag like Karol’s in Karol, the Vampire Queen, or lovingly recentered toward a rightful matriarch in 1895 Hawaii as in The Queen’s Flowers, the films awarded this year insistently clap back at any attempted underestimation of young people and instead depict their intelligence and empathy. Kudos to our brilliant filmmakers, stellar jury and whip smart young audiences.”

For the past few years, Torrance, Calif.-based CLU Transitions program has trained talented artists and animators on the autism spectrum to engage as 21st century working professionals. The artists at the program’s companion studio Brainstorm Productions have been working on an animated project titled Dreams Anthology, which is slated to debut on the studio’s YouTube Channel in April.
We chatted with the project’s consulting producer, animation veteran Bob Harper (co-creator of Prank Boy and animator on Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Lalaloopsy, among others) who gave us a better understanding of this special anthology.
Bob Harper
Animation Magazine: Can you tell us a bit about the Dreams Anthology project and how it call came to be?
Bob Harper: The Dreams Anthology grew from observing the animators at Brainstorm Studio display their passion and excitement to work in animation which was their dream. They all have a voice that is often overlooked in the industry and have stories to tell which more often never get heard. This is their opportunity to share with the world what is on their minds.
When was it launched and how many people are working on it?
We began the initiative in November after the studio finished wrapping up the music video project PurpleFrog for singer/songwriter Tim Myers, which premiered at the San Pedro Independent Film Festival. Building on the confidence for a job well done, we decided that the next big project should be more personal and reflective of the studio. There are presently 16 animators who are working on the anthology.
What was the criteria and goals of this project?
Each animator was given the prompt of what Dreams meant to them. They were then tasked to create a short, based on their interpenetration of the theme. They were given creative freedom with the only direction to make if G or PG rated. Toon Boom Storyboard Pro was used for boarding and animatics, while Adobe Creative Suite was used for animation and post.
Why do you think this project is an important venture and we need to have more ventures like this happening?
In this age of inclusion, one population that still has very little representation is the neurodiverse population. More often than not, if these artists are offered any opportunity in the industry, it is usually in a support role. We know these animators can write, direct and produce their own stories and they deserve a platform to be seen and heard.
How is it different from other similar types of projects?
We are delivering nine unique shorts, each written and directed by a neurodiverse animator who also supervised the production with their fellow animators as well as neurotypical staff members who served as support. Ultimately they all learned teamwork and leadership skills and truly finding their creative voices.
An Eclectic Mix: The animated ‘Dreams Anthology’ shorts will be available to view on Brainstorm Productions’ YouTube channel throughout Autism Acceptance Month.
What was your biggest challenge?
Scheduling was our biggest challenge, as each animator works at a different pace, and many of them are discovering their limitations as well as what they excel at.
What are you proudest of?
I love seeing the passion they all put into their art. Seeing them flourish and grow not only as artists but as young adults who are becoming more confident in their abilities, but more importantly confident as people, is truly awe-inspiring.
How do you plan for the public to view this anthology?
We will be debuting them on our YouTube channel throughout the month of April to celebrate Autism Awareness/Acceptance month and then we hope to submit the collection to meaningful festivals afterwards.

Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) have partnered with the Kevin Love Fund (KLF) to digitally release the animated short film, TheSpider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, that will be incorporated into KLF’s new mental health focused lesson plan, “The Hero Within.” The lesson plan invites students to tell their own story through the lens of mental health awareness via an interactive curriculum including a creative storyboard activity.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story was developed and produced in the inaugural year of Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ Leading and Empowering New Storytellers (LENS) program, a nine-month leadership training program that provides candidates from underrepresented groups with an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in animation. The final deliverable of the program is an all-original short film, set in the existing world of a feature produced by SPA and SPI.
“Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives,” said Jarelle Dampier, director of The Spider Within. “We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience. My intention is that The Spider Within can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys — and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales.”
“My hope for the short film would be for everyone, especially young people, to understand that your feelings are valid and that you are not alone in this,” said KLF founder, professional basketball player and mental health advocate, Kevin Love. “You see it with Spider-Man in the short film, where Miles has a trusted confidante. He is able to take a walk with his dad and express what he’s going through. We can all learn from that — how important it is to reach out to someone, express your true emotions, speak your truth and not hold everything inside.”
The LENS program is backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment’s global, multi-pronged racial equity and inclusion strategy, Sony Pictures Action. The program’s goal is to provide creatives who have traditionally lacked access to leadership roles with a first-hand opportunity to deepen their understanding of every element of the animated filmmaking process including production design, animation, visual effects, lighting, sound and various post-production processes. Through the program, participants strengthen their ability to effectively articulate their film’s creative vision and collaborate across a variety of disciplines.
Synopsis: In the genre-bending thriller The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is directed by Jarelle Dampier and written by Khaila Amazan, and produced by LENS program creators Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg. Rounding out the LENS team are Clara Chan as VFX supervisor, and Joe Darko as animation supervisor.

Muppet fans have been counting the days until the premiere of the second season of Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rockon Apple TV+ on Friday, March 29. In these 13 new episodes, our favorite characters (Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley and Uncle Travelling Matt) will be joined by new Fraggles and Doozers voiced by special guest stars including Ariana DeBose, Brett Goldstein, Catherine O’Hara, Daveed Diggs, Adam Lambert and K-pop group aespa. The Fraggles, Doozers and Gorgs will confront their past and celebrate their interdependence as they face new adventures and sing and dance at Fraggle Rock.
We had the chance to chat with three of the show’s big creatives, exec producer Halle Stanford (Jim Henson Company’s president of TV), John Tartaglia (Avenue Q) and Matt Fusfeld (Community, New Girl), to learn more about the new season:
John Tartaglia (and Gobo!)
Animation Magazine: Congrats on the fantastic new season of Fraggle Rock. To begin, can you tell us when did you start work on the new season and how long does it usually take to deliver each episode of the show?
John Tartaglia: Well, it takes about six months to write the show (which is led by Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson). Then we moved up to Calgary where we shoot the series, and that took about six more months. It takes us about seven days per each episode. Then, of course, there’s the post-production work for another three or four months. So it takes about a year to make a season of Fraggle Rock.
Matt Fusfeld
It seems that Back to the Rock continues to hit all the right spots and deliver what the fans have loved about the original show while exploring new themes and introducing new characters this season. Can you each tell us what you loved about the second season?
Matt Fusfeld: I have to mention the music first, because it has aways been the heart of Fraggle Rock. Our music exec producer Harvey Mason Jr. has done such a fantastic job. We have performers like Ariana DeBose, Adam Lambert and K-pop group aespa (we actually traveled to Seoul to film that). We also have Brett Goldstein and Catherine O’Hara, who also gave us a couple of great song. There are also lots of really funny, silly bits that I’m very proud of. A lot of it was improv, and this season, we were able to play a little bit.
Halle Stanford
Halle Stanford: I love the show and I love working at the Jim Henson Company because we’re always trying to meet families and kids where they’re at in the moment. So in terms of the big messaging and take-away when we talked to families around the world was most important to them and what they came back to again and again was climate change and food insecurity. That was really what they are concerned about the most. So we thought about how to deliver the tools to have conversations about this and to inspire model behavior. I feel that everyone really did a successful job delivering on those messages. That’s why I’m really what the show was able to say this season.
John: I think for me, it was a chance to dig deeper with the characters. We really wanted to show more sides of the characters: We called it the shadow side. You know there’s one side, which is the one you present to the world. Then, there’s the other part of you that you’re maybe insecure about it or you don’t let shine as much. It’s about taking the characters on more epic adventures and go through these somewhat difficult situations. They reveal so much about the characters. I think for a performer, it was a wonderful challenge to explore that side and it was fun to discover those parts. For example, my character Gobo, he’s the leader and in charge, but when he doesn’t know what to do, he takes being a leader too far: He becomes toxic with his power. So, we just had this opportunity to dig a little deeper and explore more than what you usually get in a TV series.
Adam Lambert visits Fraggle Rock as The Great Glitterini.
Jamdolin is voiced by guest star Daveed Diggs.
I recall reading a great review of Fraggle Rock, which pointed out that what sets it apart is that we can feel that it’s evidently handmade, and at the same time, the Fraggles feel alive and like something that you can potentially make yourself. Can you tell us why you think the show and its characters have been so popular with the fans for such a long time?
Halle: I will just jump in and talk about the power of puppets: They’re magical, powerful and wonderful. Our performers and our puppet builders bring them to life in a way that nobody else could. I really think that audiences that are watching Fraggle Rock are are part of the magic because like you said we know that they’re puppets and they’re handmade but somehow we want them to be real. We can hopefully deliver on that, and the show continues to build this powerful relationship between the puppets and our audience.
John: I would say that puppets are the last magic trick that we have. We live in a world where we know how everything is done, how every film is shot and how every effect is produced. But when there’s a puppet on a puppeteer’s hand, it’s being brought to life in a way that is believable. There’s a magic to it: There’s this intangible thing where you can’t quite explain why you believe it and why it feels so real. To be honest with you, as a performer, I can’t even tell you exactly why, but there’s just something about it. For example, there when you have scenes between Yoda and Luke Skywalker, if it was animated, no matter how great the animation was, you just knew that Yoda wasn’t really there, but when you see Yoda perform with Mark, it felt so real. I think we live in an age where people want that tactile sense. As a kid who watched the original series, I wanted to make my own puppets immediately and I did, using things from around the house and cutting up (God bless her) my mom’s old dresses and fabrics and blankets. It was something I watched and I wanted to make it myself as well. I think it’s fantastic that our audience is also inspired like that
Matt: I have two young kids and this is something that’s just so universal: Everybody has stuffed animals and what’s the first thing you do when you pick them up? You create a little voice for it, and it it’s the most universal thing in the world. So, to see it done really well, it’s really about wish fulfillment. Take Sprocket for example, anyone who has a dog talks to their dog and imagines that the dog is interacting with them it’s just one of the most human things in the world. Then, there’s nothing quite like seeing these master Jim Henson puppeteers bring these puppets to life.
Sprocket sets sail with Doc (Lilli Cooper) in the new season of ‘Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock’
You have quite an impressive guest star list this season. Did you write the guest roles with these specific actors/performers in mind or did you write the scripts first and then find the best performer for the roles?
I think we all always had in our heart of hearts who we would love to come on the show and be a part of it, particularly with music guests. But we also knew which kind of new characters we wanted to meet new characters on the show. From our perspective, we definitely wanted to get a K-pop band. We knew that Brett Goldstein was a massive Fraggle fun, so we wrote the part for him. We also wrote the character played by Catherine O’Hara with her voice in mind and just hoped that she would say yes. So, I guess it all went hand in hand.
You start with what is the message we’re trying to convey here, but it pretty quickly becomes, “Oh, who would be exciting and a good representative and have just kind of a soulful connection between the character and talent.” Fraggle has been a real great talent magnet and Apple was an incredible partner in bringing aboard the talent and all these top level singers to the production.
Catherine O’Hara guest stars as Leader in S2.
Brett Goldstein arrives in the Rock as Pryce.
aespa performs in a new episode of ‘Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock’
What has been the most challenging or favorite episode of the new season for each one of you?
Halle: For me, it was going to Seoul and filming the aespa music video with Uncle Traveling Matt on top of a helipad. That was quite challenging to coordinate Uncle Traveling Matt with aespa and the whole production on top of a helipad. The trailer already dropped and it’s gotten over 6 million views, so it was all worth it. We were there for a week the extensive prep work, but the shoot itself was only a day.
John: For me, as a performer, the big challenge is the physicality of everything: We don’t write these characters for what they can’t do we. We write them for what we want them to do, and we always put the limits in the best possible way. But sometimes we are shooting all these difficult scenes day after day. We have the Fraggles in water, and we’re literally in scuba suits going underwater with these puppets, and the next day, I’m under a floor performing with Sprocket, and my arm has to be up for over two hours. So that’ the physical aspect of it. From an emotional place, you know the journey of these characters and all their emotional moments. There are moments when they are losing hope and feeling isolated. When it comes to climate change, we wanted to convey the message that we can all really do something about it. We can make a difference, so it was so cathartic to have these storylines about never losing the power of hope and the ability of facing things together. It really kind of reinvigorated me as a person.
Matt: I love all the episodes this year but as I was rewatching them, I really enjoyed the episode where the gang is basically all restarting the night over and over again, kind of like Groundhog Day. Alex and I were really excited to tell that kind of story, but it was really challenging to do in a way that was that was Fraggly and and not too heavy. It took a long time and a lot of collaboration to get it to where we wanted it to be. It was a challenge for us because it’s all about repeating the same sequence over and over again.
I think we have time for one last question: What is the most memorable reaction you have had from Fraggle Rock audiences?
Halle: I was going back home after finishing the second season and going through customs and security. You always get nervous when they ask you where you were and what you were doing. But this time, when I said I was working on Fraggle Rock, suddenly this man’s face completely changed and he flashed a smile and he was like, “I love Fraggle Rock! Come on in.” That was so nice. I’ll always remember that moment.
John: For me, it happened recently. I was on the Jim Henson Company lot and I had Gobo there. On that day, there was a group of tourists coming through that we’re getting a tour of the lot. There was a girl that day who casually mentioned that Fraggle Rock was her favorite, and I just happened to have the Gobo puppet there., so I brought him out to meet her. When I brought him out, these tears just poured out of her eyes. She started to cry really hard. She said, “This was my only friend when I was a kid. Gobo was my best friend.” It made me start to cry, too. It was such a reminder of … through all the hard and all those physically exhausting days, it’s beyond worth it when you see how these characters and this legacy effects people. It really reminded me of the privilege and the power we have to do that.
Matt: My genuine answer to that is how my own kids responded to the first season. There is a Hollywood kind of answer too: It happened when I ran into a friend of mine with whom I had written on a show before. I really respected his comedic talents, but he’s also a very acerbic and cynical writer. He says to me, “Hey, hey … I watched Fraggle Rock. That was funny. That was funny, man!” That was the greatest compliment coming from such a hard, comedian type of person.
The complete second season of Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 29. The “Night of the Lights” holiday special and the original 1980s Fraggle Rock series can also be streamed on Apple TV+.

Today at Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Epic Games presented its State of Unreal keynote, debuting Unreal Engine 5.4, showcasing cutting-edge new video game titles from UE developers and walking attendees through the 2024 roadmap for the future of creation in Fortnite.
Award-winning filmmaker Amy Hennig and her team from Skydance New Media made a surprise appearance to show how UE5.4 features and MetaHuman technology boosted the character performances for their new Marvel game, 1943: Rise of HYDRA.
The developer also announced that the revenue-sharing Epic Games Store is coming to iOS and Android later this year.
What’s Shipping in Unreal Engine 5.4
Skydance’s presentation featured Nanite Tessellation and volumetric rendering, which are shipping in Unreal Engine 5.4 Preview 1, available now.
Animation is a major focus of 5.4, which introduces Motion Matching, a simple and efficient way to animate characters in games. Later this year, Epic will release a free sample learning project that includes over 500 AAA animations created from high-end motion capture data with the locomotion and traversal dataset used in the keynote demo. And, thanks to extensive battle-testing in LEGO Fortnite development, users can now fully animate your game using Control Rig and Sequencer with no round tripping between applications.
The UEFN demo “Talisman” showcases the new MetaHuman tool.
What’s New in UEFN
Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Creator Economy 2.0 launched at GDC 2023. Since then, creators have published more than 80,000 UEFN islands, and Epic has paid more than $320 million to creators in the first year of engagement payouts.
Epic introduced and previewed several new features on the UEFN 2024 roadmap, and announced that creators using UEFN can now easily create and animate MetaHumans as non-playable characters (NPCs) for their Fortnite islands using MetaHuman Creator and MetaHuman Animator.
The developer is also making more gaming IP from Epic widely available for Fortnitecreators. Creators can now use new creative devices and race track templates to build Rocket Racingislands in Fortnite, including a Rocket Racing Vehicle Spawner device for spawning vehicles and two brand-new templates for making their own tracks.
In May, Epic will be adding Fall Guys assets, animations and Fall Guys beans to UEFN so creators can build their own frantic obstacle courses, all inside Fortnite.
The company is working towards opening up more opportunities for creators to tap into Epic Games IP as well as licensed properties, with LEGO Group announced as the first brand partner providing assets to Fortnite creators.
LEGO Comes to Fortnite Creative and UEFN
Starting today, Epic bringing even more LEGO building magic into the Fortnite ecosystem with LEGO Elements and other assets now available in Fortnite Creative and UEFN. All creators who are members of the Island Creator Program and sign the additional terms and conditions can build their own LEGO Islands using LEGO brand templates, props, consumables, items and more. When players enter new LEGO Islands built by creators, they will appear in the minifigure LEGO Style of Fortnite Outfits.
This is the latest to come from the long-term partnership between Epic Games and The LEGO Group, which kicked off in December 2023 with the launch of survival crafting adventure LEGO Fortnite. Using UEFN, The LEGO Group has since built and published several family-friendly LEGO Islands in Fortnite for players to continue their LEGO gaming journey, including three new LEGO Islands they announced onstage today.

The PG-rated family flick will open in theaters August 2.
Synopsis: Inside of his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life — and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades.
Sony’s ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ mixes CG animation, some 2D sequences and live-action.

The film’s screenplay is written by David Guion & Michael Handelman (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Slumberland).
Netflix has announced the star-studded voice cast and brand new images from Locksmith Animation (Ron’s Gone Wrong) and director Simon Otto’s (Love, Death + Robots; How to Train Your Dragon trilogy) upcoming CG animated feature That Christmas. The film will debut on Netflix later this year.
The film stars Brian Cox as Santa, Fiona Shaw (voice of Ms. Trapper), Jodie Whittaker (Mrs. Williams) and Bill Nighy (Bill) as the residents of a charming seaside town where things turn upside down one Christmas. That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys!
That Christmas is an adaptation of the beloved children’s book series (The Empty Stocking, Snow Day and That Christmas) written by BAFTA Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer and director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Yesterday). A film of firsts, it marks Curtis’ first animation project as well as the directorial debut for animation veteran Otto.
“Becoming an animator had been on my Christmas wish list ever since I was a child and watching animated movies was one of the biggest Christmas traditions in my family. But never could I have imagined that one day I would get the chance to direct a Christmas film written by the one-and-only Richard Curtis and collaborate with some of the most iconic voice talents,” said Otto. “Watching this cast bring life to these heartwarmingly funny tales and infuse them with the magic of animation is truly a dream come true. I hope That Christmas becomes a cherished tradition for audiences worldwide.”
The film also stars Lolly Adefope, Alex Macqueen, Katherine Parkinson, Sindhu Vee, India Brown, Zazie Hayhurst, Sienna Sayer, Jack Wisniewski, Rosie Cavaliero, Paul Kaye, Guz Khan, Andy Nyman, Kuhu Agarwal, Bronte Smith, Freddie Spry, Ava Talbot and Rhys Darby.
Written by Curtis & Peter Souter and produced by Nicole P. Hearon p.g.a and Adam Tandy p.g.a, the festive feature boasts a score from Academy Award- and BAFTA-nominated composer John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, Happy Feet, Shrek). Curtis also executive produces alongside Mary Coleman, Natalie Fischer, Julie Lockhart, Elisabeth Murdoch, Bonnie Arnold, Lara Breay, Sarah Smith, Rebecca Cobb and Colin Hopkins.
“This has been the most amazing adventure, my first animated film. It’s been especially exciting to see the whole world I imagined come to life beyond my wildest dreams — and populated by a dream bunch of actors, their wonderful voices turned into such rich and funny characters,” Curtis shared.
That Christmas is part of Netflix’s original slate of animated features which includes Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the Academy Award-nominated films Nimona, The Sea Beast, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and Klaus; the BAFTA-nominated Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget; and the comedy fan favorites Leo and Back to the Outback. Upcoming animated features also include Thelma the Unicorn, Ultraman: Rising, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, Spellbound, In Your Dreams, The Twits, Pookoo and an untitled Wallace & Gromit film.
Born and raised in Switzerland, Simon Otto studied animation at the prestigious Les Gobelins Animation School in Paris, France. Prior to joining the team at Locksmith Animation, he directed the Love, Death + Robots episode from Season 2, The Tall Grass, and developed, executive produced and served as the supervising director on the successful Netflix series A Tale Dark & Grimm. He also directed episodes on the Netflix animated series Dragons: Race to the Edge and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.
Otto spent over 20 years working at DreamWorks Animation, most notably as the head of character animation on the Oscar-nominated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. In that role, he oversaw the character animation and was instrumental in designing and developing the look of the characters, their personalities and the overall style of the animation, while also working in the story department as a story artist. He first joined DreamWorks in 1997 to work on the groundbreaking The Prince of Egypt and worked as a supervising animator both in hand-drawn and CG animation on many of the studio’s features including, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and the Aardman co-production Flushed Away.
A young boy named Oscar join forces with his favorite luchador in Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad (Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness), one of the most high-profile, recent animated series produced by Cartoon Network Latin America and Mexican studio ¡Viva Calavera!. The 2D-animated show, which premiered last December, features the voices of lucha libre star Rey Mysterio, as well as Ellie Rodz and Jocelyn Robles. It follows the adventures of Oscar as he discovers a hidden world of Mexican wrestlers with superpowers. Oscar teams up with his idol to face supernatural beings and fight against the Uroboros (an evil fighter) and other forces of darkness in this colorful and highly original project.
\We recently had the great pleasure of chatting with Los Hermanos Calavera (The Skull Brothers), who always wear lucha libre masks and like to remain incognito! Here is what they told us about their hot property:
Los Hermanos Calavera
Animation Magazine: First of all, congrats on the success of your animated show. Can you tell us a bit about how Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness came to be?
Los Hermanos Calavera: Work on the series started almost 10 years ago. It’s been quite the journey. On one hand, Rey Mysterio was off contract and not tied to any wrestling company, so we saw the opportunity to approach him about potential projects. On the other hand, Cartoon Network opened offices in Mexico and were looking for local creators to tell original stories. It was the perfect moment for this to happen. Then, it took a few years of figuring things out in terms of licenses and to polish the story to the point where it could work in a short format but have potential for growth. Pablo Zuccarino, Jaime Jímenez, Humberto Cervera and of course Rey Mysterio himself were all fundamental to reach that point. We first started working on one-minute shorts (available on YouTube for Latin America) and then worked on the pilot, which evolved into a 10-episode season, which is now available on Max and Cartoon Network in Latin America.
What were the big inspirations for the show?
There’s a few. The obvious one is of course our love of lucha libre. As kids, we watched lucha libre every weekend, bought masks and stickers and magazines, wrestled our cousins … we just loved it. And Rey Mysterio was one of our idols. We’d watch his spectacular style and be amazed at how he was making a name for himself in the U.S. As we started growing as creators, we wondered what would be the Mexican version of the action series and movies we loved. We had superhero versions of the U.S. view of the world, and of course fantastical approaches to Japanese legends and Chinese martial arts. What did that look like for Mexico? What was the origin point? And we concluded it had to be lucha libre and the masked luchador, which now seems kind of obvious. Another important source of inspiration has been of course anime. We grew up watching Dragon Ball, Saint Seya, Captain Tsubasa … we loved the high intensity, the drama and crazy action; and wanted to bring that to whatever we created, but of course with a Mexican touch that could connect with people with ties to Mexico, but also with everyone in the world.
Where is the animation produced?
The bulk of the animation was produced in Mexico. Our studio ¡Viva Calavera! handled the more complex scenes, Mighty Animation in Guadalajara worked on the largest number of shots, and other studios like Alex Torres’ KaiserCrew and Aska Animation handled specific shots. We also had help from other LatAm studios like Lucy Animation and Formidable, as well as some other great creators with no previous ties with LatAm, like Jamie Vickers.
Overall, how many people work on the series?
Since the project has been so long, and the production spread out, it’d be hard to put an exact number to it. In ¡Viva Calavera! at it’s highest we were probably around 25 people working, but that’s a fraction of the total crew involved in the project overall between animators, background artists, character artists, production crew … It took a village for sure.
Can you talk a bit about the animation style?
We put a lot of emphasis on this. We wanted an animation style that paid tribute to our anime inspiration, which also had the advantage of, if done correctly, being relatively cheaper. We’ve come to call it “limited sakuga” [from the Japanese term for cinema-quality animation], where we work really hard on making sure we have very powerful and well executed character layout, which then means we don’t necessarily need as many in-between drawings but still manage a very powerful snappy animation. This was the norm for the action shots and we tried to replicate that logic for all scenes. Eder Luna and Andy Alcaraz were instrumental in making the show move like we wanted.
What do you love about the show?
We love the fact that we were able to make it. To make a story about one of our idols and some of the things we love. We absolutely love the crew that came together to make it. In terms of the show itself, the action scenes were really where we placed our bets and we think they turned out really well. Also, the overall art direction we feel has a very clear Mexican touch, but also is unique; Gaby Galvan, Andrés Escobedo, Crosby Gonález and Misael Gil, with our support, were responsible for that. A very pleasant surprise were the characters and their relationships; when the animation and voice over brought the scripts to life, we were so happy to see these were actual people with personalities, flaws and wants … We love them.
What was the most challenging aspect of it?
Without a doubt working at such a scale proved a huge challenge. The three of us are used to working out everything by ourselves and communication is easy amongst us, the result of a lifetime of figuring things out together. Scaling that up to produce a whole season is a huge challenge. We were helped by the great people at Cartoon Network and our production crew, Gabriela Pérez, Karen Chavez, Axtli Jimenez, Adriana Alvarez, Esmeralda Malagón, Luis Peña, the team at Mighty Animation; but also advice from Mike Rauch, Magdiela Duhamel, Eric Robles. So many people helped us navigate and find ways to convey our vision while leaving room for people to contribute.
What have been some of the most memorable responses to the series?
It’s been great to hear from people who have been excited about the fight scenes, the art; those elements we were trying to achieve. Hearing that we achieved some of what we set out to do is incredible. A lot of people have responded well to Oscar, Leo and Amanda, the three kids who star in the show alongside Rey Mysterio. That is very rewarding. And also other characters, like the bad guys, have been very well received. However, the most memorable response for us has been Rey Mysterio’s. Watching his reactions to the early designs and animatics, and seeing his willingness to improve his voice over work because he believes in what we’re doing has been absolutely amazing.
What is your take on the growing animation landscape in Mexico?
It’s exciting. There are a lot of different studios with different voices and creators less and less afraid to tell their stories. Whereas for many years studios mostly positioned themselves as service providers for U.S. and Canadian studios, and of course this is still an important part of the industry, now there’s a push for original creations. The overall environment in the industry globally is not the best right now, but Mexicans are known for their ability to make something out of nothing, so we’re confident the industry will find a way to keep growing.
What are the plans for the future?
We see a great future for Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad. We have mapped out a continuation to the story that we think is very exciting. We also are working very hard to get the show to as many people worldwide as possible as well as finding new avenues for people to connect with the show. As a studio, ¡Viva Calavera! is exploring other possible avenues of collaboration with Rey Mysterio and new projects to develop in the short and long term. The future certainly looks promising. Booyaka!
