Pink Parrot Recruits International Partners for ‘Elli and Her Monster Team’

Montreal/Madrid-based international sales company Pink Parrot Media (PPM) has secured a wave of deals for its recently completed CG animated fantasy feature, Elli and Her Monster Team! — a co-production between Germany’s Zooper Film, Dreamin’ Dolphin Film (Latte and the Magic Waterstone) and Traumhaus Studios alongside Canada’s CarpeDiem Film & TV (Snowtime!, Racetime, Butterfly Tale). PPM made the announcement at the European Film Market in Berlin, during which the film had its market premiere.

The film has sold to Just Entertainment (Benelux), Bim Distribuzione (Italy), NOS Lusomundo (Portugal), Flins&Piniculas (Spain), GPI (Baltics), Pro Films (Bulgaria), Rocket Releasing (CIS), Forum (Czechia/Slovakia), MCF Megacom Film (Former Yugoslavia), Cinetel (Hungary), Forum (Poland, Romania, Israel) and Front Row (Middle East). Elli and Her Monster Team! will be released in Germany in June by Wildbunch and by Level Film and Maison 4:3 in Canada.

Synopsis: When a homeless little ghost knocks on the door to the eccentric residents of a Ghost Train on the lookout for a place to belong, she accidentally attracts the attention from the “outside world” and must team up with the motley crew of monsters on a crazy quest not only to save their future, but also her only chance to finally have a family of her own.

“Through Elli and Her Monster Team!, we wish to show that people can change and that life itself is not a solid block, but a malleable path through a spectrum of experiences from which everyone grows to become a better person,” said Marie Claude Beauchamp, President & Producer at CarpeDiem.

Lilian Klages, CEO & Producer at Zooper Film, Dreamin’ Dolphin Film, added, “Elli and Her Monster Team! is a truly fabulous film for families everywhere, of all ages and all constellations. And just like Elli learns in this unique and heartwarming story: real emotional attachments you choose with your heart — and no matter who and what we are, we’re all part of the same big universal family.”

Elli and Her Monster Team

Based on the best-selling children’s book by Klaus Baumgart, Elli and Her Monster Team! is directed by Jesper Møller (Asterix and the Vikings, Spy Cat) and Piet de Rycker (Laura’s Star, Little Polar Bear) and co-directed by Jens Møller (LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures). The film is co-written by Jesper Møller, Piet de Rycker and Paul Risacher (Racetime). Producers are Lilian Klages and Thomas G. Muller for Zooper Film and Dreamin’ Dolphin Film alongside Marie Claude Beauchamp for CarpeDiem Film & TV and Michael Luda for Traumhaus Studios, with executive producers including Marc Gabizon for Wildbunch and Tania Pinto Da Cunha for Pink Parrot Media.

“The story of Elli and Her Monster Team! couldn’t be more timely as it offers audiences important messages of love, acceptance and inclusion — and it’s fantastic to have partners from all around the world embrace this uplifting story,” said Tania Pinto Da Cunha, Partner / Vice-President and Head of International Sales & Acquisitions at Pink Parrot Media. “Jesper and Piet have crafted a hilarious and wonderfully original adventure, which we believe has the potential to capture the hearts of family audiences around the world and to become an instant classic.”

Director Phoebe Jane Hart Talks about Her Buzzy Sundance Short, ‘Bug Diner’

Phoebe Jane Hart’s clever and unforgettable short Bug Diner won the Best Animated Short prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival last month. The beautifully crafted stop-motion project takes place in a one-of-a-kind diner that caters to a bug clientele and is run by a “mole with a hot ass.”

We just had to track the imaginative creator down to find out more about this tasty artistic meal:

Phoebe Jane Hart
Phoebe Jane Hart

Animation Magazine: Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your short?

Phoebe Jane Hart: You know, it’s funny … I sat down to write a script for an assignment, and my intention was to write this quiet and simple story about an orange girl living in the desert working at a diner run by bugs (maybe because I moved to the desert and missed diners). But somehow, Bug Diner‘s story full of tension, lust and fantasy fell out instead. I was in a screenwriting course at CalArts with the lovely Lewis Khlar and because it was in the theater school I got to hear acting students read the script in class. It was low-pressure and really just a formatting exercise, but when it was read aloud everyone got such a kick out of it, I was shocked. And then I thought, well … shit; I guess this one’s gotta get made! (Knowing it would take all I had in me to create it.)

I think the script came so naturally from a place of having just left pent-up COVID-quarantine days mixed with feelings of distrust and sexual frustration I was experiencing in a relationship at that time. I guess I was craving something … explosive.

When did you start working on it and how long did it take?

It was around a year in total. I wrote the script in 2022 and decided then that I wanted to make it for my thesis film at CalArts. I started building the sets with my talented production design collaborator, Jalen Colbert, in the fall of of 2023. From then on it was about nine months of a non-stop train of pouring myself into the film.

Bug Diner

What are the puppets made of and how big are the sets?

I built wire armatures and used various techniques to finish. Some of the puppets have faux fur transfer, or flocked faces that were sculpted out of epoxy. A lot of their mouths were sculpted with epoxy and I used magnets to snap replacement mouths on and off of characters. I think the hand-painted eyes I made really brought the puppets alive when one of my professors, Stephen Chiodo, told me to paint the eyes with some clear nail polish to give them some glisten. It was that moment my puppets suddenly came to life!

The sets were different in scale, the exterior diner I shot on a downshooter, so they were tiny flats. The interior of the diner was the big boy of them all, measuring at about eight feet long by four feet deep, about the right scale for a Barbie. And the underground kitchen was 1/8 scale, so it was quite a bit smaller.

How many people worked on it with you?

It was a small team and really a network of gorgeous, perfect angel friends helping out. My work involved writing, directing, fabrication, animation, camera/lighting, some VO and editing. I had two core collaborators: Natasha Jacobs, who crafted the composition, sound design and mix to my wildest dreams, and an incredibly talented and hard-working student at the time, Jalen Colbert, who helped me design and build all of the sets. I can’t thank these two enough for making my film what it is. I had help with post from a team of lovely CalArts folks who really came through: Anthony Jones colored, and current faculty member Paul Kyle was my post supervisor.

And then really it was a handful of family and friends who witnessed the unfortunate state I was in and got me to the finish line. My sister, Rose Hart, knit the incredible sweaters: she’s an ear doctor so … it was amazing to see her make such detailed costumes from the sloppy mock-ups I brought home over the holidays. My dear friends Noa Hu and Emily Downer fabricated the other costumes. And my talented actor/writer friend Jacob Levy came in and brought so much humor performing the voices of Bill the mantis and Taylor the Anteater.

I also want to thank my CalArts mentors Kangmin Kim, Pia Borg and Stephen Chiodo for all of their guidance and support and my friend/film collaborator Zazie Ray-Trapido for coming in to fabricate last minute props!

What was the best part of the making of the short?

Getting to hear an audience laugh.

Bug Diner

What were your biggest challenges?

I would say once all the fabrication was done, it was the animating. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every second, even the three seconds of film that took all day to make. Because I was at school and sharing spaces, I had a limited amount of time with space and equipment. So, out of necessity, I animated eight minutes of animation in 60 days straight, which any animator I think might tell you is masochistic and I highly don’t recommend it. Let’s just say I don’t remember the month of June 2024. Isn’t it messed up I’m dying to make another film? Animation can be like a toxic relationship, but God, I love it … which may or may not speak to the dynamics in Bug Diner.

When did you know you wanted to work in animation?

I was in a workshop taught by Professor Sabrina Marques in my undergraduate program at West Conn University. They didn’t have an animation department and I was pursuing illustration after leaving a frustrating acting career behind. I got into acting because of my obsession with film, but I quickly realized I had little control over what I was cast in. I was always interested in highly stylized film with visual language so strong you could pause the film at any moment and the story told itself. And when I took this workshop in experimental animation, it was momentous for me. I could make a movie … completely alone … with a small budget … and have control over every single frame?! I was hooked.

What are some of the favorite TV shows, shorts and movies that made a big impact on you?

At a very young age I would interrupt my parent’s movie nights and as a result I got to see neurotic sexy films like Amelie, Delicatessen or Magnolia. I will never forget finding a DVD of Cool World, a deeply horny animation/live-action mixed film that my mom definitely didn’t realize wasn’t for small children when I got it. So those films speak to my early exposure to cinema and perhaps why I make what I make.

Nowadays I am very inspired by the work of Niki Lindroth von Bahr, in particular her short, The Burden. And my most recent favorite TV show is White Lotus. I actually edited the climax of Bug Diner to the Season 2 opening song! “Renaissance” from composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, which my composer Natasha Jascobs said was impossible to compete with but ended up scoring to the same BPM and absolutely crushed it.

Bug Diner

What was the biggest lesson you learned?

Make what you really want to make! And when someone tells you it’s not possible, just say, “Watch me, baby!” Maybe say it with a wink.

And what are your plans for the future?

I have a few pitches ready, for anyone reading .. .please help me fund these films. One is a feature that is a prequel of sorts to Bug Diner. The story sets-up the origin of the dynamics of the same characters. Much like the short, It’s filled with raunchy puppet scenes and a similar tone but centered around exciting new characters and …. murder(?!). While I do my festival rounds with Bug Diner I hope to meet people along the way who can help make one of my new ideas a reality. In the long-term I also have a strong desire to teach and find so much fulfillment in providing mentorship that I hope can mirror my many wonderful mentors along the way.

Oscat Best Picture - Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget

Animal rights org PETA has announced the recipients of it seventh annual Oscat Awards (peta.org), honoring actors and films that promote kindness to animals through their stories, costume choices and special effects. Aardman/Netflix sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget won Best Picture, and voice star Bella Ramsey also received the Best Actor award for portraying Molly (Ramsey was named PETA’s Most Beautiful Vegan in 2023).

Per the awards jury:

Molly (Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget)

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget takes home the top prize for its unflinching depiction of the horrors of factory farming and the humane-washing that corporations use to manipulate consumers. The film doesn’t just scratch the surface. It digs deep into the lives of chickens, reminding us that they are sentient beings deserving of compassion and respect. Using instantly recognizable animation and a star-studded cast, director Sam Fell — who stopped eating meat after doing research for the film — shows us that chickens are clever, resourceful animals who just want to live in peace.

Also receiving recognition were animated features Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which earned the “Speciesism Shredders” award for its subtle nods to animal rights including a “GO VEGAN” license plate and Master Splinter’s correction of anti-speciesist language; and Migration screenwriter Mike White, who was awarded the “Flying V Is for Vegan” honor for the movie’s portrayal of ducks as resourceful birds with individual personalities and disturbing view of their use as food.

Next up are new movies from two hit PBS KIDS series, Wild Kratts and Nature Cat. In Wild Kratts: Our Blue and Green World, premiering April 1, the Kratt brothers disagree on what’s better: blue oceans or green forests. Aviva takes on the role of referee to demonstrate how oceans and forests work together to make our living planet, just like Martin and Chris need to keep working together. It’s up to the gang to get Martin and Chris back in sync in time to save planet Earth from Zach and Paisley Paver’s villainous plans.

A new game, World Rescue, accompanies the movie special in April and will be available on the PBS KIDS Games app and pbskids.org, with new episodes of Wild Kratts premiering April 2.

In Nature Cat’s Nature Movie Special Extraordinaire, debuting April 22, Nature Cat and his friends are trying to figure out what their movie special is about when Sir Galahad (voiced by Chris Parnell), who’s now anointed himself King Galahad, begins taking things from nature to makes his castle look more beautiful. It’s up to the gang to show him a better way to appreciate the natural beauty of their world before he does more damage to their favorite place. The special features three original songs written by Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Bill Sherman and performed by the cast: Taran Killam, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan and Kate Micucci.

A new short-form series Nature Chat with Nature Cat will debut digitally the same day. In the shorts, Nature Cat speaks directly to fans about how they can help make the world a better place. Harkening back to clips from across all five seasons of the series, with the help of his production assistant Gary the squirrel, Nature Cat explores ten different sustainability topics ranging from composting and water conservation to upcycling, avoiding food waste and more.

New episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premiere on May 6, exploring concepts like putting things away and finding surprises wherever we are, followed by new short form series Donkey Hodie Bedtime Stories, which will premiere on May 27 across streaming platforms. These eight shorts from the popular puppet series Donkey Hodie comprise five- to six-minute videos designed to fit into kids’ bedtime routines. Oni Press Plans ‘Adventure Time’ Comics Compendiums ahead of New Series Launch

Eisner- and Harvey Award-winning publisher Oni Press announces a new partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP) and Cartoon Network to bring the award-winning library of Adventure Time comic books and graphic novels back into print with brand-new compendium collections, beginning in fall 2024 with the Adventure Time Compendium Vol. 1 and Adventure Time: The Fionna and Cake Compendium.

In addition to its ongoing collection program for the Adventure Time library, the new partnership between Oni and WBDGCP, will also encompass an array of all-new series and graphic novels — the first comics inspired by the hit animated series in more than five years — slated to begin publication in 2025.

“For nearly a decade, the Adventure Time line of comics was a magnet for some of the most intensely talented voices working in the comics medium, drawing in an entirely new generation of readers in the process,” said Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn. “Building upon the genius of Pendleton Ward’s inventive, influential, and iconic animated series, this enormous wealth of comics creativity has been out of print for far too long — and it’s an immense privilege to bring it to Oni Press, where we aim to bring forth new collections that will meet the high expectations of both original fans and new readers alike … and start to craft all-new adventures for Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and more.”

Arriving in comic shops and bookstores in October 2024, Adventure Time Compendium Vol. 1 collects the first 35 issues of the Eisner Award-winning run led by New York Times best-selling writer Ryan North (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) that the A.V. Club called “an experience…[that] explores the vast opportunities that graphic storytelling presents.”

The first in Oni’s new line of softcover Adventure Time compendium collections features contributions from acclaimed artists Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb (Midas), Mike Holmes (Wings of Fire), Jim Rugg (Street Angel), T. Zysk, Kat Philbin, David Cutler (Darkhold), Ian McGinty (Welcome to Showside), Jesse Tise (Electric Candyland), Carey Pietsch (The Adventure Zone), Yumi Sakugawa (I Think I Am in Friend-Love with You), Liz Prince (Regular Show), Becca Tobin (Frontier 9), Missy Peña (Steven Universe), Jeffrey Brown (My Teacher Is a Robot), Jess Fink (SPX) and Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Lil’ Gotham).

Coming one month later in November 2024, the quest into the Candy Kingdom begins anew in the Adventure Time: The Fionna and Cake Compendium, collecting Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake #1–6 from Fionna and Cake creator Natasha Allegri (Bee and PuppyCat), alongside Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake: Card Wars #1–6 from New York Times best-selling author Jen Wang (The Prince and the Dressmaker) with artists Britt Wilson (Ghost Queen) and Betty Liang (Space Vixen Falling), and shorts from creators N.D. Stevenson (Nimona), Lucy Knisley (Apple Crush) and Kate Leth (Patsy Walker: AKA Hellcat).

It’s the mathematical and radical adventures of Finn and Jake as they team up with some of Ooo’s most memorable residents to do what they do best — PUNCH THINGS! Er, we mean ADVENTURE! With Princess Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Ice King, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO and more along for the ride, what could possibly go wrong?!

Robert Morgan Discusses the Inspirations and Challenges of His Hand-Crafted Horror Movie ‘Stopmotion’

Stopmotion

In director Robert Morgan’s new feature film Stopmotion, a talented stop-motion animator becomes consumed by the grotesque world of her horrifying creations — with deadly results. The movie, which mixes stop-motion and live-action and stars Tom York, Carolinn Springall, Stella Gonet and Therica Wilson-Read, will be released by IFC Films in select theaters this Friday and will debut on Shudder in May.

The BAFTA-nominated filmmaker (Bobby Yeah, The Cat with Hands) explains that as a kid, he found stop-motion animation “disturbing and frightening.” As he told EW.com, “I’ve never thought that stop-motion is a cutesy kid thing … I’ve always thought it was an uncanny, slightly occult process, building little puppets and then doing this strange ritual on them which brings them to life.”

We were thrilled when the U.K.-based Morgan answered a few of our questions via email recently. Here is what he told Animation Magazine about his haunting new movie.

Robert Morgan
Robert Morgan

Animation Magazine: Congrats on the amazing movie, Robert. Can you tell us about your inspirations for this story?

Robert Morgan: I have a background in stop-motion animation. The initial idea was to make a film that features a stop-motion animator as the lead character, as I’d never seen stop motion depicted as a vocation in a film before. The other inspiration was an experience I had when I was making a short film (Bobby Yeah) where project sort of took on a life of its own and I had the sensation that I didn’t really have much say in what it was going to be. It was as if the film had its own consciousness … These two ideas formed the basis of Stopmotion.

When did you start working on the movie and how long did it take to complete?

I started writing it properly around 2012 with my good friend, Robin King. Robin also has experience in stop-motion animation so he totally understood the concept and he was invaluable in shaping it into a coherent story. We were both working on other things in the meantime so the film probably took around five years to write because we kept stopping and starting. Then it took another five years or so to get the financing to make it (plus COVID happened in that time and put it on hold for a couple of years). So, it’s been about a 10-year journey! Then, the main live-action shoot was 25 days with some stop motion done in parallel, then a load more stop motion was shot during the editing process. The whole film (pre-production/production/post-production) took about a year.

What did you love about the process of making it?

The main thing I loved was the collaborative aspect — working with so many great talented artists from every department — actors, designers, camera department, etc., and seeing their own creativity feed into the film and to watch it slowly come alive.

Stopmotion
Inner Demons: Aisling Franciosi (‘The Nightingale’) stars as Ella, a stop-motion animator whose mental health battle after the loss of her overbearing mother brings her art to life in a terrifying new way.

What were your biggest challenges?

Time and money is always the biggest challenge. Getting everything done in the timeframe, and having to make very quick decisions about what to compromise on and what not to compromise on.

What do you love about the medium of animation, especially stop motion?

I love its tactile, hand-made feeling. And I love how it feels like an occult art. Bringing inanimate objects to life is stop motion’s unique quality. This is what I love about it.

What is the creepiest movie you have ever seen?

That’s a difficult question, there are so many. There’s this relatively obscure underground horror film called The Last House on Dead End Street, which really gives me the creeps. It feels like it was made by genuinely dangerous people and it really has the quality of a nightmare. It’s another film about filmmaking and in some distant way it sort of influenced Stopmotion, but my film is way more safe-feeling than that one!

Stopmotion

Who are some of your animation idols?

Jan Švankmajer, Walerian Borowczyk, Charley Bowers, Ladislas Starevich, Roland Topor (although Topor wasn’t an animator, he did — among many other things — design for animation and his work was always amazing).

What do you hope audiences take away from the movie?

I just hope they have a memorable experience that stays with them. I like to be haunted by films, so this would be my hope — that it continues to rattle around in people brains after they’ve seen it.

What is the most memorable reaction you have got to the movie so far?

I heard that a member of the audience fainted during a screening at Sitges Film Festival and an ambulance had to be called. That’s quite memorable.

Stopmotion

What is your take on the state of animation in 2023-2024?

Honestly, I don’t pay that much attention to the current state of things. I mostly watch older films. Stop-motion seems to be in a very healthy place though.

What’s your next project?

I’m currently writing a couple of things, but it’s too early to talk about it!

Stopmotion opens in theaters through IFC Films on Friday, February 23. The film will be available to stream on Shudder later this year.

CG Pre-K Series ‘Chums’ from Indigenous Creators Renewed for S2

Eric Jackson of Saskatoon’s Paxolotl Media Inc. and Leslea Mair of Winnipeg’s Zoot Pictures, announced today that Chums, a new 3D-animated series currently in production for preschoolers aged 3-6, has been renewed for a second season of 9 x 30’ episodes by broadcasters APTN and Citytv Saskatchewan. The first season of the series is slated to premiere this Spring, and will also be available for streaming on APTN lumi.

Additionally, Franco-Ontarian network TFO has also come on board to broadcast a French-language version of both Season 1 and 2 of Chums.

The series producers will soon introduce Chums to the festival circuit, planning an official selection premiere at the 11th Māoriland Film Festival in Otaki, New Zealand (March 20-24). The festival showcases new Indigenous film and television productions from around the world.

Synopsis: In the world of Chums, a young Eaglet named Ira and her rag tag group of furry friends on Turtle Island are discovering their relationships to each other and to their environment on Mother Enmmarth. Ira’s group of “Chums” — friends — includes Flies with Eagles, a young girl who is always willing to help; Emiree, a baby beaver with the softest heart; Romper, a rabbit that has trouble paying attention; and Pterry, a ptarmigan who wishes he could fly better. Our newfound chums take it upon themselves to be the explorers of Turtle Island, and to discover and learn about the world around them.

The show  is designed to encourage the discovery of traditional Indigenous relationships to the animals and environment around us. It is being produced in four languages — English, Cree, Ojibwe and French — with the aim of encouraging Indigenous languages for children. The show is formatted for lip synching and versioning the characters into various languages.

Chums director and co-writer Dennis Jackson created the popular stop-motion kids’ series Wapos Bay, which aired between 2005 and 2011 in Canada on APTN and in the U.S. on the First Nations Experience Network (FNX). A collaboration between Dennis and his son Eric (co-writer and producer of Chums), the new series features an Indigenous creative team and cast. For many of the Indigenous kids voicing the animated characters, this is their first acting break.

The production partnership between Paxolotl Media and Zoot Pictures includes a mentoring element with the goal of helping develop more Indigenous production companies in Canada/Turtle Island.

Chums also marks the creation of a new animation studio based in the Canadian Prairies. The producers have assembled a team of talented people from across the two provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The project offers experience to under-represented cast and tech people in the film and television industry and acts as an important vehicle for training. Junior animators have been paired with experienced veterans as part of a multi-year program to train Indigenous animators, modellers and riggers.

“It’s great to receive this vote of confidence from our broadcast partners APTN and Citytv Saskatchewan to go forward with a second season,” said producer/co-writer Eric Jackson of Paxolotl Media. “As I’ve said before, creating an entirely new animation studio in the Prairies with my dad and my kids makes this a pretty unique thing for all of us. Not just now, but for the future if they follow in our footsteps to continue creating Indigenous stories.”

Exec producer Leslea Mair of Zoot Pictures adds, “We’re also really delighted that TFO has come on board to broadcast Chums. The show is an exciting, innovative project is so many ways, and we’re pleased that French-speaking kids and families will also get a chance to tune in and enjoy the adventures of Ira and her furry friends.”

Chums is written by Eric and Dennis Jackson, as well as by Justina Neepin, directed by Dennis Jackson, produced by Paxolotl Media’s Eric Jackson, and executive produced by Zoot Pictures’ Leslea Mair. Art director is Stephanie Boulet. Tech design is by Frank Digital.

The series is produced by Paxolotl Media and Zoot Pictures in association with APTN and Citytv Saskatchewan. It was developed with APTN, the Canada Media Fund and the Indigenous Screen Office, and is produced with the participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund, the Canada Media Fund, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, the Manitoba Provincial Tax Credit, the Saskatchewan Feature Film and Television Production Grant Program and the Indigenous Screen Office.

Watch: Prime Video Sneak Peeks ‘The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy’ in New Clip

This week, a new out-of-this-world medical is paging viewers to Prime Video: From Emmy-winning creator Cirocco Dunlap and Maya Rudolph, Danielle Renfrew Behrens and Natasha Lyonne’s Animal Pictures, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy premieres February 23, introducing viewers to Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak — intergalactically renowned surgeons and best friends, working together to tackle any malady the cosmos throw at them.

In a new exclusive clip shared with Animation Magazine, we get an advance look at the premiere episode. The excerpt features Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer), Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu), Dr. Vlam (Maya Rudolph) and Dr. Plowp (Kieran Culkin). In Season 1, doctors Sleech and Klak take on a highly dangerous and potentially groundbreaking case and, in doing so, put existence itself in jeopardy. (Although considering their dismal personal lives, oblivion might be an improvement.)

The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with animation by Titmouse Studios, and is under a two-season order from Prime Video, which will stream The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Series creator Dunlap also serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer along with executive producers Rudolph, Behrens and Lyonne for Animal Pictures. Shauna McGarry, Shannon Prynoski, Chris Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina from Titmouse executive produce. Artist and animator Robin Eisenberg is co-producer and production designer.

Sneak Peek: French Producer Marc du Pontavice Gives Us the Scoop on His New Movie ‘Lucy Lost’

0

We recently had the chance to catch up with Marc du Pontavice, founder of French animation studio Xilam (founded in 1999) and producer of the Oscar-nominated feature I Lost My Body and popular shows such as Oggie and the Cockroaches, Mr Magoo, Zig and Sharko and Chip ‘N’ Dale: Park Life. His new project Lucy Lost, an animated feature based on award-winning author Michael Morpurgo’s Listen to the Moon, which will be showcased at next month’s Cartoon Movie event in France.

The period pic centers on Lucy, lively child with extraordinary faculties, which makes her look out of place amongst the fishermen of the Isles of Scilly. But all the care and affection she gets from Alfie and his family can’t shelter her from the rumors and superstitions that she unknowingly stirs up. When Lucy meets Milly, a mysterious girl, she embarks on an incredible race in pursuit of her true origins.

Here is what the veteran French animation figure shared with us about his new movie:

Animag: Can you tell us a bit about how Xilam became involved in Lucy Lost

Marc du PontaviceMarc du Pontavice: I first read Michael Morpurgo’s (War Horse) best-selling mystery novel Listen to the Moon – which Lucy Lost is adapted from – back in 2017 and instantly fell in love with the story. It’s a captivating novel that weaves together themes of family, love and memory against a backdrop of vivid landscapes, which I knew would translate beautifully to the screen.

From there, we picked up the rights and got going on development. Initially, we were adapting the book into a TV miniseries but then in 2022 I met the director, Olivier Clert, whose vision for the project convinced me to pivot to making it into a theatrical movie.

What do you love about the original book and why did you believe it would make a great animated movie?

Lucy LostThis is a story of mystery and resilience. This is about dealing with a wounded memory and finding your place as a stranger in a suspicious community. In other words, it’s a very rich story thematic-wise, led by a fragile yet courageous child in a world that is constantly moving between colorful fantasy and harsh reality.

What were your biggest challenges as you set out to realize this project?

Proving that when it comes to family movies, the western animation industry is not just about comedy — animation is a medium through which heartfelt, dramatic and captivating stories can be explored and brought to a large international audience.

Where is the animation being produced? Can you tell us more about visual style?

At our animation studio in France – it will be fully animated in a mix of 2D and 3D. We’d like to propose a clear style that is rich and visually pleasing. Our aim is to find a balance between the efficiency that is found within Japanese animation (such as Myazaki, Hosoda and Shinkai), and a slightly graphic and pictorial approach that is specific to illustration and painting, which can be seen in movies like Cartoon Saloon’s Song of the Sea.

Lucy Lost
Xilam Films’ “Lucy Lost” debuts at Cartoon Movie in March.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the movie?

A desire to reach out and connect with others, and to consider our differences with understanding and kindness. I also hope it will offer audiences a sense of optimism and give them the self-confidence to overcome difficulties and traumas.

What is your take on the state of global feature animation scene in 2024?

There is a growing demand for storytelling and a visual approach that is less formulaic and offers something unexpected. Yet to meet this demand, there needs to be significant investment and commitment to exploring animation projects beyond the traditional and expected CGI comedy genre. We can only hope that the precedent created by Myazaki with The Boy and the Heron, and the remarkable success this film has had on the global stage, will inspire the decision makers.
