Spiderwick, Jumper Hop Into Theaters

0

Getting a head start on the three-day weekend, two big vfx flicks arrive at the nation’s multiplexes today, each based on a book and offering a different take on the fantasy genre. Paramount’s The Spiderwick Chronicles is out to ensnare family audiences in its fantastical web, while Jumper is aimed more squarely at teenage boys with high-octane action and sci-fi effects.

Based on the best-selling series of books by Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi, director Mark Waters’ The Spiderwick Chronicles has peculiar things happen to the Grace family when they move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle, Arthur Spiderwick. In addition to a host of CG-animated critters, the film stars Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Joan Plowright and David Strathairn, and features Seth Rogen and Martin Short in voice roles. Over the Hedge director Karey Kirkpatrick collaborated on the screenplay with David Berenbaum (Elf) and filmmaker John Sayles (Limbo). Visual effects were created by Industrial Light & Magic and Tippett Studio.

Doug Liman, director of Swingers, The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is known for crafting films with outrageous action, but Jumper represents a leap into new territory. The 20th Century Fox release is based on a novel by Steven Gould and stars Jamie Bell as a kid who discovers that he can teleport at will to anywhere in the world. He meets another ‘Jumper,’ played by Hayden Christiansen from the Star Wars movies, and together they find themselves in a centuries-old battle between their kind and those sworn to destroy them. Weta Digital handled a large part of the visual effects work, getting assistance from Hydraulx, Digital Domain and R!OT, Pixel Playground, Lola Visual Effects and Sandbox F/X.

Also opening this weekend are Buena Vista’s hip-hop dance sequel, Step Up 2; The Streets, and Universal’s romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz, the movie from the makers of Love, Actually should do well with the Valentines day date crowd.

In addition, Magnolia Pictures and Shorts International have joined forces again to theatrically distribute the Academy Award nominees in the Short Subject category. This year’s noiminees for Best Animated Short category are Josh Raskin’s I Met the Walrus, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s Madam Tutli-Putli, Samuel Tourneux and Simon Vanesse’s Meme Les Pigeons Vont Au Paradis (Even Pigeons Go to Heaven), Alexander Petrov’s Moya Lyubov (My Love) and Suzie Templeton’s Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. The toon shorts are being presented along with this year’s nominated live-action short films. Employing RAIN Network’s digital distribution system, the program will initially be beamed to theaters in 50 U.S. cities before widening.

Trek Gets Pushed Back

0

Star Trek Fans eagerly awaiting J.J. Abrams’ big-screen franchise reboot will have to wait until next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount pictures has done some major reshuffling of its release slate, pushing Trek from Christmas Day, 2008 to May 8, 2009. While a number of movies are being rescheduled due to the now ended writer’s strike, Paramount says it’s deploying Captain Kirk and crew on a summer mission because of the film’s blockbuster potential.

Paramount spokesman Michael Vollman told the trade that the Star Trek script didn’t require any script doctoring during the strike, and that the film is two-thirds in the can and would have been ready for a December bow. To fill its spot in the holiday lineup, the studio has moved The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a comedy starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19.

Directed by Abrams, Star Trek will focus on the early voyages of James T. Kirk and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise. Chris Pine (Smokin’ Aces), who bares a passing resemblance to a young William Shatner, is playing Kirk, while Zachary Quinto from TV’s Heroes dons a set of pointy ears as Mr. Spock. Simon Peg (Shaun of the Dead) is Scotty, Karl Urban (Doom) is Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy, John Cho (Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanimo Bay) is Sulu, Anton Yelchin (Charlie Bartlet) is Pavel Chekov and Zoe Saldana (Avatar) is Nyota Uhura. The cast also includes Winnona Ryder, Bruce Greenwood and Eric Bana.

Creator and exec producer of the ABC series Lost and Alias, Abrams directed the third installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise and produced Paramount’s recently released giant moster movie, Cloverfield. Among his various irons in the fire is a sequel to the horror pic, which was made for roughly $25 million and has grossed more than $133 million worldwide to date.

Howard the Duck Creator Dies

0

Steve Gerber, creator of Marvel’s Howard the Duck comic-book series, died Monday in a hospital in Las Vegas while awaiting a lung transplant. He joined the Marvel ranks in the 1970s and has written for a number of comic series, including Man-Thing, Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, The Phantom Zone, The Legion of Night and Guardians of the Galaxy. Gerber also wrote for a number of other publishers and was working on Countdown to Mystery: Doctor Fate for DC Comics when he passed away at the age 60.

Howard the Duck, an anthropomorphized, cigar-chomping alien quacker, first appeared as a secondary character in a Man-Thing story in Marvel’s Adventure into Fear #19, published in December of 1973. Gerber eventually penned 27 issues of Howard the Duck, which became a cult hit with its biting social satire and parodies of other genre staples. He also became editor of the series, but was removed in 1978 over creative control issues. He then unsuccessfully attempted to sue Marvel for rights to the character. Disney also threatened legal action and forced Marvel to alter the character design because it too closely resembled Donald Duck.

In 1986, director George Lucas and Universal Pictures released a live-action Howard the Duck feature film, which was poorly received and blasted by fans of the comics for abandoning the sly wit and subversive humor that marked Marvel’s version.

Gerber, who had little to do with the movie, returned to the Howard the Duck comic series from time to time, penning a miniseries in 2001. And while the character never found his way to animation, Gerber wrote for such animated series as Thundar the Barbarian, G.I. Joe, Superman, Mr. T, Yu-GI-Oh! and The New Batman Adventures.

MacLachlan on Voicing Superman

0

The folks at Warner Bros. sent us the following interview with actor Kyle MacLachlan, who voices the role of Superman in the upcoming DC Universe animated feature Justice League: The New Frontier. The film will be released on home video on Feb. 26. You can read our review here www.animationmagazine.net/article/7908.

From his head-turning debuts in Dune and Blue Velvet to his iconic Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks and his current plum primetime role on Desperate Housewives, Kyle MacLachlan has had a memorable career. Now you can add a new benchmark for the actor. MacLachlan makes his animation debut as the voice of Superman in the highly anticipated direct-to-DVD film, Justice League: The New Frontier.

‘Superman stands for so many things that I believe in’strength, justice, fighting for what’s right,’ says MacLachlan. ‘You just can’t turn down the opportunity to play a guy like Superman.’

MacLachlan is an integral part of an all-star cast that includes Neil Patrick Harris, David Boreanaz, Brooke Shields, Miguel Ferrer, Jeremy Sisto, Kyra Sedgwick and Phil Morris. Casting for the film focused on finding actors that could channel the tones of the Korean War era of the mid-1950s without sounding corny or old-fashioned.

‘Kyle MacLachlan is the perfect example’he sounds exactly like what you’d think a ’50s era Superman would sound like,’ explains exec producer Bruce Timm. ‘He’s very righteous and good, but still very natural. We didn’t want the sound of Superman in 2008, and Kyle gave such a great, stylized performance in capturing that mid-’50s feel.’

MacLachlan doesn’t claim any specific talent for a ’50s superhero, but says he just tried to echo the Superman in his psyche. ‘There’s a sort of moral imperative that Superman has, and I think the language he uses is a little more proper,’ he remarks. ‘He’s just not a guy who uses his words casually. So maybe, unconsciously, that 1950s tone just creeps in there for me.’

MacLachlan enjoyed his first voiceover experience in animation, though it was not without challenges. As usual, the cast recorded the script before the animation began, then returned to the booth about 10 months later to add and tweak the dialogue and effects. While MacLachlan is accustomed to live-action looping, the animation equivalent proved more challenging.

‘When I’m synching to myself in live action, which is what I usually do, my mouth moves the same way and I can see it visually and it somehow connects,’ notes MacLachlan. ‘This is a little more difficult because the animated mouth moves a little differently. The animation doesn’t quite have the same amount of detail that you would see in a real-life performance. Like the word ‘strategy”we were having trouble in the booth getting that one right because I couldn’t really see how it was formed in my animated mouth. But we made it all work.’

MacLachlan found particular amusement in voicing the action sequences within the film, particularly those moments that called for going beyond even the far-reaching imagination of his roles in David Lynch films.

‘The physical performance is fun,’ he says. ‘You have to use your imagination a lot more. It’s a lot of grunts and oomphs and ughs, which you just can’t help but act out physically. I’m sure it looks funny from the other side of the glass. Like in one scene, it was about getting hit with a pterodactyl wing versus getting punched by a super villain. There’s apparently a difference in that sound. So you have to shade it a bit and use the imagination.’

MacLachlan admits it will be tough to accept another superhero role after his performance in Justice League: The New Frontier. ‘Once you’ve done Superman, it’s hard to go anywhere else,’ he notes. ‘So I think I’ve reached the zenith of my superhero experience.’

Voltron Flies Back on Boomerang

0

Boomerang, Cartoon Network’s classic animation channel, will begin airing classic episodes of the action hit Voltron on Monday, Feb. 18. Licensed from rights holder World Events Prods., the weekly strip will consist of repackaged 1984 episodes that will run Monday through Friday for one year in the 10:30 p.m. time slot.

Voltron is a Japanese anime series that focuses on a team of young pilots in charge of five robot lions that unite to form the mega robot Voltron, defender of the planet Arus. The show was completely re-mastered and re-mixed for an 8-volume DVD set titled Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which Media Blasters released in 2007. The DVD package includes exclusive documentaries and seldom-seen clips from the original series. The first five volumes were released during 2007, and three remaining volumes, including the Go Lion episodes, are scheduled for release throughout 2008.

20th Century Fox’s New Regency is in negotiations with the Mark Gordon Co. to make a Voltron feature film that will combine live-action and CG animation, much like DreamWorks/Paramount’s blockbuster Transformers. The script is being written by Justin Marks, who is adapting He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the Green Arrow movie, Supermax, for Warner Bros. World Events says the buzz around the movie is sending merchandising into overdrive. Some of the latest deals include a collectible shoe line by Reebok, several apparel lines, a collectible toy line and a comic deal with Devil’s Due Publishing.

Writers’ Strike Ends

0

Those who have been missing new episodes of their favorite shows can now look forward to the Hollywood machine rolling back into commission. After 100 days on the picket line, members of the Writers Guild of America will be going back to work after voting overwhelmingly yesterday to end the three-month strike. The organization says 3,775 writers turned out in Los Angeles and New York to cast ballots or fax in proxies, with 92.5% voting in favor of ending the work stoppage.

‘The strike is over. Our membership has voted, and writers can go back to work,’ says Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, West. ‘This was not a strike we wanted, but one we had to conduct in order to win jurisdiction and establish appropriate residuals for writing in new media and on the Internet. Those advances now give us a foothold in the digital age. Rather than being shut out of the future of content creation and delivery, writers will lead the way as TV migrates to the Internet and platforms for new media are developed.’

WGAW and WGAE members will next vote to ratify the tentative three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Both sides agreed that writers would initially receive a fixed residual for online content in the amount of about $1,300, after a two- or three-week window in which distributors can use content for free. During the final year of the deal, writers will claim 2% of the distributor’s web revenue on a given project. The ratification vote will be conducted by mail and also at membership meetings on Feb. 25.

Fox Sues Warner Over Watchmen

0

Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder (300, Dawn of the Dead) are already in production on a feature film based on the best-selling graphic novel Watchmen, but 20th Century Fox is looking to shut it down. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has filed a lawsuit claiming that it has exclusive rights to develop, produce and distribute a movie based on the tome penned by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons.

The suit claims that Fox picked up movie rights to Watchmen and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm between 1986 and 1990. The studio then assigned certain rights to Largo International, providing that the studio held exclusive rights to distribute the first Watchmen film. Largo eventually folded and rights reverted to producer Lawrence Gordon, who, according to Fox, agreed to pay the studio a buy-out price if he took the project to another studio.

Originally published 1986, Watchmen is set in a time when superheroes have been outlawed and revolves around a group of caped crusaders who struggle with their own personal demons while trying to avert a nuclear war between the United States and Russia. Snyder is currently shooting the pic with a cast that includes Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman. Warner plans to release the film theatrically next year if Fox doesn’t prevail in its efforts to grind production to a halt.
