‘Win or Lose’: Critics Rate Pixar’s Tween Tales a Win, Despite Representational Loss (New Clips)

Disney+ has officially launched Win or Lose, the first original series from Pixar Animation Studios which follows the intertwined stories of eight different characters as they each prepare for their big championship softball game — the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire.

To mark the release, two new clips and a featurette taking fans inside the diamond have debuted. Critics’ reviews are also rolling in. While the overall consensus is that the storymakers at Pixar have scored another win (earning an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the shadow of the controversial decision to remove the mention of a character’s trans identity looms over the pitch.

What the Critics Are Saying

Collider‘s Ross Bonaime praises the way each episode’s story builds upon another, and highlights the nuanced voice performances of Rosa Salazar (Vanessa), Rosie Foss (Laurie) and Milan Elizabeth Ray (Rochelle). “Pixar is still clearly trying to iron out the wrinkles in how to best use episodic television to tell their types of stories, but Win or Lose is a great step in the right direction,” Bonaime writes. “By putting their characters at the forefront, and exploring each one from new angles with other episodes, we see what made Pixar so great in the first place, and how they’re able to bring magic to even the most straightforward, relatable emotions.”

Reviewing for IGN, Jesse Hassenger highlights the hypocrisy in the show’s messaging versus the Mouse House’s decision to censor the transness of character Kai, who is voiced by young transgender actress Chanel Stewart: “Without getting preachy — in fact, often while being hilarious — Win or Lose visualizes how both children and adults process their emotional challenges, and how those dimensions are often initially hidden from casual view. It’s especially sad, then, that one feeling — fear — prompted Disney to cut a storyline for the transgender character…”

Hassenger adds, however, “In a perverse way, knowledge of the interference faced by Win or Lose makes the show itself all the more impressive; it could have easily wound up feeling as focus-grouped and over-engineered as any number of more muddled Disney projects. Instead, it hits that sweet spot where kids, especially those close to the ages of the characters, can lock into it, and adults can marvel at its cleverness and honesty.”

The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news about Kai’s cisgender retconning, more bluntly addressed the impact of Disney’s decision. “Critics weren’t sent the episode centered around Kai, and she hasn’t played a significant role in the ones we have seen so far. So I can’t tell you how the last-minute rewrites play, how central her trans identity would have been to her narrative, or how erasing it changes our understanding of her,” critic Angie Han discloses, before eloquently adding:

“What I do know is that a bit of compassion toward a trans child, and other people who might see themselves or their loved ones in her, would have gone a long way right now. That trans kids deserve care and understanding, as well as stories that reinforce that they deserve care and understanding. And that this series declining to take that stance contradicts the very spirit of thoughtful curiosity that it claims as its foundation.”

Kidscreen Summit: Content Creators Seek New Survival Strategies in Uncertain Times

Kidscreen Summit
Kidscreen Summit 2025

About 1,500 animation and children’s media industry professionals and newbies gathered at San Diego’s Marriot Marquis last week for this year’s edition of Kidscreen Summit (Feb. 9-12). Among the many timely topics explored by the experts and panelists were how to maximize the potential of new kids’ content on popular digital platforms, practical success strategies in the “new streaming normal,” and the latest developments in the brave new AI universe, as well as presentations by development execs from Nickelodeon, Disney Branded TV, Netflix, BBC Kids, Warner Bros. Discovery, Walmart and others.

In a panel titled “The New Business of Content,” Darran Garnham (Founder & CEO, Tokido), Sean Gorman (President, Cloudco Ent.), Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala (VP Transmedia, Rovio Entertainment), Andy Yeatman (CEO, Miraculous Corp) and moderator Peter Robinson (Founder, Gone With) discussed how they continue to grow the world of familiar brands such as The Care Bears, Miraculous and Angry Birds in a fast-changing market by focusing on expanding target audiences, fan engagement and loyalty.

“Discoverability and regular media exposure have become more and more challenging as there are so many platforms and it’s hard to have that consistent programmed view time on a weekly basis,” noted Gorman. “The average American consumer spends close to 3.5 hours a day on social media. Older audiences are looking for different things and want the content a certain way. We have more opportunities to expand the audience when we have a new show and a new movie, which are being delivered on different timelines. Brand collaboration is also a powerful tool to drive new audiences and bring in someone else’ s audience into our own brand with classic Care Bear content.”

Yeatman pointed out that a show like Miraculous has its own unique success story because it was launched as a linear show in 2015 on TF1 and Nickelodeon, back when that was the still the number-one way for kids to watch content. “We then experienced the tipping point of streaming,” he noted. “This show was launched 10 years ago almost in the early days of the streaming boom with the old-school production model, with six or seven co-pro partners. Many different broadcasters and studios needed to come together from around the world to fund the show and make it happen. Today, we have over 50 broadcasting and streaming partners, including the original co-pro partners, and we need all of them to make this show.”

“The New Business of Content” panel with Sean Gorman (President, Cloudco Ent.), Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala (VP Transmedia, Rovio Entertainment), Andy Yeatman (CEO, Miraculous Corp) and moderator Peter Robinson (Founder, Gone With).

Reaching Out to Wider Audiences

Yeatman also noted that although the business of content has changed a lot over the past few years, he and his team still have to manage all their partners. “Thankfully, not all of them give us creative notes,” he added. “But obviously, the ways in which kids interact and discover content has changed dramatically over the past few years. However, broadcast partners still really matter to us. The awareness for our content is strong in countries worldwide, but it’s a little stronger where we have global broadcasters like TF1 (France) and Televisa (Mexico). Of course, YouTube is incredibly important for us, as well as Roblox, which has only been around for four years. They are ways for us to reach new audiences. So, I would say that the model for funding our show is remarkably similar to the early days, but the way that we reach audiences around the world is much more fragmented now.”

Rovio’s Valkeapää-Nokkala noted that a brand like Angry Birds need to cast a wide web to continue to grow and find new audiences. She revealed that the core audience of the popular franchise are not children, but gamers who are between the ages 30 to 60. “Your typical audience of our puzzle game in the U.S. are 40-year-old women, but our slingshot games appeal to much wider audience…from kids to 50-year-old males,” she said. “We do have to cater to very different points of views — for example we have a Mercedes-Benz collaboration as well as a Talking Tom project for younger audience. We explore their back stories with comics to explain the lore to core fans. We also have long-form projects, as well as another feature in production right now. We need to be almost everywhere and that can be a bit hard. Gen Z and Gen Alpha don’t want to get service. They like to feel like they’re part of a tribe, so you need to work closely with the community while staying true to your brand. We do have 10-year road maps for our brand and we just stick to that.

Early Adopters, Superfans and Word of Mouth

In a separate presentation, research and strategy agency Gone With founder Peter Robinson discussed the importance of finding early adopters and turning them into high-yield audiences for brands. “The new models of creating content for kids may or may not take as long as the old one, but they involve many more steps,” he said. “You make the content, then you have to go and find that audience using the platforms available to us. They also need to prove their value, and there are lots of people producing content that offer the same value. You have to listen to that feedback, because you learn from the audience, and at some stage we need to figure out how to get paid. We start thinking about business models, licensed partners and channels, and about investment and funding. There’s a lot of work that we have to do as creators in this new model to get our content to a big audience so that we can actually monetize our work.”

Robinson stressed the rewards of reaching the right audience early on in the process of adoption, as well as creating value for audience growth and viewing habits. “We have tons and tons more data now than we used to, but we have really struggled to think about how that data helps us understand the performance and growth for the brands” he noted. He also emphasized the huge role superfans and positive word-of-mouth (kids to kids, parents to parents and parents to kids) can play, and how to reward casual audiences to drive up numbers and ensure the growth of the project after the delivery of the first season or batch of episodes.

Gone With’s Peter Robinson compared the audience numbers for hits such as Disney’s “Bluey” and “Phineas and Ferb” with YouTube successes like “Baby Shark” in his presentation.

Strategies to Survive Sudden Layoffs

Among the other sessions presented at the Summit this year featured several animation and kids industry veterans speaking candidly about dealing with layoffs and losing jobs during a precarious time in the entertainment business. Sharing their own personal stories, they told personal stories about how they each went through the initial shock and despair stages of being laid off to finding hope and new beginnings with the support of friends and colleagues in the animation community.

Adina Pitt, who left her job as longtime VP of acquisitions, partnerships and co-pros for Warner Bros. Discovery’s kids & family division last year, recalled, “They say everyone’s going to lose their job in any field at some point in their career. I naively didn’t quite process that all good things come to an end. But now I can say to this group that I’m so proud of the time that I’ve had at that company. I went through about six mergers in my career, and that’s a lot of change that’s thrust upon you versus change that you that you initiate. But I’m really excited about the next chapter, because this is a moment in this industry that is going through so much change and so rapidly. To be able to be part of that process and reframing what the industry is going to look like and have the ability to do that now in a different way, that’s actually really exciting.”

She added, “I also have to say that I couldn’t think of a nicer, kinder more supportive community than the kids’ community writ large during what for me was really hard, I’m I don’t think any of us here are victims: I think we all are coming through better, stronger and smarter.”

Jilliane Reinseth, a longtime kids’ TV executive who has held creative leadership roles at Nelvana, Disney, Nickelodeon, Hasbro and WildBrain, and started her own consultancy company called Jolly Chipmunk, talked about the importance of reframing one’s perspective after an unexpected layoff.

“I’ve been laid off a few times because this is what happens in our industry especially with all these mergers, acquisitions and restructures, ” she recalled. “The hardest one emotionally was first layoff: It was my first job in children’s entertainment, and it was at Nickelodeon in Santa Monica. I loved our team and I worked on the first season of SpongeBob and developed and produced The Fairly OddParents. One day, Kevin Kay, who was the head of our team, came out form New York, and we thought we were going to have one of our team meetings. But then my direct Boss went into an individual meeting and came out and told me that he was just let go and that I was going to be let go too! That felt like a knife in my stomach, because it was totally unexpected!”

“Coming Back Stronger after Layoffs” panel with Kristofer Updike, Adina Pitt, Jilliane Reinseth and Chris Rose, moderated by Danette Johnson, career coach.

Reinseth said she first angry and frustrated, but she went on a walk around the block and asked herself, “How do I want to leave this company, and what’s the impression I want to leave them with?” So, instead of being upset, she asked her New York boss how his day was and empathized with him when he told her that it had been the worst day of his life because he had to let so many of his friends and colleagues go. “He told me that the reason we were let go was because this of the impact of the 9/11 tragedy in New York. Originally the layoffs were going to be shared between N.Y.C. and Los Angeles, but after 9/11, they decided that the New York office had been through a very difficult time, and instead just went with the L.A. layoffs. So, I felt then that It was OK, because on a bigger human scale, it was the right thing to do at the time,” she concluded.

Among the helpful tips the panelists shared with the audience was the value of reviewing past achievements and successes and keeping the positives fresh in mind when interviewing for new positions. They also reminded the audience of the most successful strategies for finding new jobs. As Christofer Updike, former VP of development at Peacock Kids and NBC and current senior VP of creative at Hidden Pigeon Company, pointed out,  “About 80% of the jobs in the creative industry will be found through someone you know or someone they know. Keep that in mind, that means your friends or their friends. That was true for me: That’s how I got my job.”

Trailer: Animated Queer Love Story ‘Two Black Boys in Paradise’ Launches Festival Run

Two Black Boys in Paradise
Two Black Boys in Paradise

The newly produced stop-motion animated short Two Black Boys in Paradise, based on a poem by award-winning writer Dean Atta (The Black Flamingo) and narrated by musician, actor and writer Jordan Stephens, will have its U.K. premiere at BFI Flare London: LGBTQIA+ Film Festival.

Directed by Baz Sells and written by Sells, Atta and Ben Jackson, the nine-minute  short is produced by Manchester’s One6th Animation Studio, and was supported by the BFI Short Form Animation Fund, with early development support of actor Ian McKellen and Partizan Films.

“This process has been amazing because I didn’t know how an animation was made at all. It’s just mind boggling sometimes to know how many hands have had a part to play in making this happen,” said Atta. “I wrote a poem that could be like a film in people’s minds. But we’re not relying on people’s minds in terms of imagining it — we’re going to show it to them now, and that’s really wonderful!”

The film will screen at BFI Flare — Europe’s largest LGBTQIA+ film festival — on Sunday, March 23 in the “To Your Souls” U.K. & Ireland shorts selection within the Festival’s Hearts strand in BFI Southbank’s NFT1 in London, having enjoyed its world premiere at the prestigious Anima Festival in Brussels on Saturday, March 1. The film will also travel to the Tampere Film Festival in Finland from March 5-9  and the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) in Palm Springs later in the month.

Produced in lovingly-crafted stop motion animation, Two Black Boys in Paradise tells the story of Eden (19) and Dula (18) — two black boys on a journey of self-acceptance — as their love for each other, and their refusal to hide it, lands them in a paradise free from shame and judgement.

Based on Atta’s poem from his acclaimed poetry collection There Is (still) Love Here, it explores themes of homophobia and racism, and tackles the real-life struggle of identity, sexuality and belonging.

Two Black Boys in Paradise

“We cannot wait to introduce our film to audiences across Europe and the U.S.A. For years, I wanted to create a film rooted in my personal journey as a gay man,” said writer-producer Jackson. “I spent much of my life hiding my sexuality, only coming out at 30, and it took even longer to truly accept myself. But once I did, I started to discover so much more joy in life. That’s what this film is about for me — the joy of self-acceptance and self-love. I hope it resonates with people, offering them warmth, hope, and a sense of belonging.”

Sells added, “I’m profoundly grateful for the chance to visualize this beautiful and bold poem. The production has challenged us as an independent animation studio but we’ve relished the opportunity made possible by the BFI, Dean and our dedicated associates. This film is a celebration of Black and queer identity. It speaks to the transformative power of personal victories for people who are held back — whether by systematic or internal forces — and the overwhelming joy that can be found in self acceptance, personal empowerment and love”.

Actor Arun Blair-Mangat (Kinky Boots, In the Heights) provides non-verbal sounds for the film, alongside Jordan Stephens’ narration.

“I’ve known Dean for a while and I’m a fan of his presence, patience and devotion. The piece is gorgeous and I was drawn to the project from the jump, even before I lost myself in the animation,” said Stephens. “The whole project is an ode to belonging. And how complicated, difficult and messy that journey is. It’s an ode to love. Which is and will always be the greatest anything that life has to offer.”

Blair-Mangat said, “When I first saw Two Black Boys in Paradise I was deeply moved by the beautifully tender portrayal of Black queer love and the depiction of the characters’ sensuality and sexuality. It’s been a privilege to be involved with the project and I’m excited for everybody to see it.”

Two Black Boys in Paradise was made with the support of the BFI Short Form Animation fund, awarding National Lottery funding. A nationwide initiative, the competitive fund offers ambitious animation filmmakers the chance to access a higher level of funding, which is rarely accessible to short-form productions.

Two Black Boys in Paradise screens at the BFI Flare London: LGBTQIA+ Film Festival on March 23. The festival runs March 19-30 at BFI Southbank. www.bfi.org.uk

Crowdfunding production and distribution platform Angel Studios (angel.com) has released a second official trailer for their upcoming animated feature film, The King of Kings. Based on the story by Charles Dickens, the CG-animated family pic will open in theaters on April 11.

The new spot features the song “Fly” by the late Nightbirde (Jane Marczewski), previewing the movie’s distinctive storytelling approach set against the stirring composition.

“We are honored to feature Nightbirde’s music in this new trailer for The King of Kings,” said Brandon Purdue, EVP of Global Theatrical for Angel Studios. “Her music not only complements the narrative but also embodies the spirit of hope and faith that the film celebrates. We believe this trailer will set the stage for what promises to be a deeply moving cinematic experience for families around the globe.”

The King of Kings s an imaginative retelling of the story of Jesus Christ which combines a Dickens narrative with a journey of faith, seen through the eyes of a child. The film’s voice cast is led by Kenneth Branagh as Charles Dickens, Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens, Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, Mark Hamill as King Herod, Roman Griffin Davis as Walter Dickens and featuring Forest Whitaker as Peter, Ben Kingsley as High Priest Caiaphas and Oscar Isaac as Jesus Christ.

The film marks the directorial debut of Korean VFX supervisor Seong-ho Jang (The Thousand Faces of Dunjia).

Marczewski was an American singer-songwriter known for her appearance on America’s Got Talent in 2021 and her popular 2020 single “It’s OK,” which followed her second diagnosis and remission of cancer. She reached No. 3 on Billboard‘s Emerging Artists chart in June 2021. Marczewski received a Golden Buzzer on AGT for “It’s OK,” but withdrew from the show before the quarterfinals due to her worsening health due to cancer. She died Feb. 19, 2022 at age 31.

All proceeds from the licensing of the posthumously released “Fly” will support the Nightbirde Foundation, a 501c3 that seeks to bring hope to women who are battling breast cancer.

Marco Balsamo to Head New TeamTO Structure as President & CEO

Marco Balsamo [c.o TeamTO]
Marco Balsamo [c/o TeamTO]

European independent animation studio TeamTO has announced that Marco Balsamo will take over as President & CEO, following its acquisition by RIVA Studios Productions SRL in December 2024. The 33-year-old Italian-American filmmaker and entrepreneur will now oversee TeamTO’s operations, balancing executive and creative responsibilities while positioning the studio for growth in a rapidly evolving animation industry.

Co-founded by Balsamo and Tara Sibel Demren, Italian production company RIVA Studios partnered with Jay Oliva of Lex & Otis and investor Peter Bekkerman to form a new ownership group with the sole purpose of securing the studio’s long-term future. The acquisition coincides with TeamTO’s 20th anniversary, marking a pivotal moment in its history.

As part of its commitment to preserving TeamTO’s legacy, RIVA Studios retained 90% of the studio’s employees, ensuring continuity while stabilizing operations. The new management structure includes long-term TeamTO executives Clélia Santi (Head of Studios, Paris, now located at 20 Rue de la Pierre Levée); Carole Toledo (Head of Studios, Valence); Jean-Baptiste Spieser (Chief Technology Officer); Olivier Plazas (Art Director); and Fanny Weber (Executive Producer).

Other key roles include Tara Sibel Demren and Jay Oliva as Executive Producers and Balsamo as Producer, with further creative appointments to be announced in the near future.

“This studio has built a remarkable legacy, and we’re committed to ensuring its long-term success,” said Balsamo. “We also want to expand our reach to international partners, strengthen our presence in the global animation industry, and establish TeamTO as a leader in both original content and premium production services.”

Under its new leadership, TeamTO will expand its creative slate, blending its legacy of acclaimed childrens animated series like Angelo Rules and Jade Armor with a lineup of original IPs from RIVA, broadening its reach into adult animation and 2D animation. The studio is currently developing Akira’s Flying WheelchairJunichiro JacksonYellow Cello and the Sea of MemoriesThe Adventures of Amir Hamza (based on the legendary South Asian epic), Cradle: Unsouled, Era: The Legend of Lugh and Corvus Belli’s Infinity: Paradise Lost.

One of Balsamos key initiatives as CEO will be to diversify TeamTOs production slate, ensuring it remains a competitive force in the industry. He will work closely with Oliva and Demren to develop bold new projects that push the boundaries of storytelling and visual artistry. Beyond his executive role, Balsamo will take on expanded creative responsibilities, serving as a showrunner, writer and director across multiple projects.

Balsamo and Demren, already aware of TeamTO’s financial situation, had been exploring ways to save the studio from bankruptcy since early June 2024, actively working on potential solutions. Then a chance meeting with Oliva in New York in mid-October — just four days before the bid deadline — led to their decision to acquire the studio together. What started as a friendly catch-up quickly turned into a determined effort to preserve a studio renowned for its technical innovation and storytelling excellence. With time running out, the group submitted their bid to the French court just 24 minutes before the deadline, securing TeamTO’s future.

The way this deal came together — so serendipitously, so quickly — still feels surreal,” said Balsamo. In an industry where animation studios are struggling, talented animators are being laid off, and decades of work are at risk of vanishing, we couldn’t let a studio with TeamTOs pedigree be lost. Weve always championed the independent spirit of filmmaking, and TeamTO embodies that same spirit. I couldn’t ask for a better team with whom to embark on this adventure.”

Titmouse Developing ‘Nights’ Animated Series Based on Horror Comics from Image

0
Nights X Titmouse Promo

Titmouse, the award-winning animation studio known for pushing creative boundaries, will develop an animated series based on Nights, the hit comic book written by Wyatt Kennedy with art by Luigi Formisano.

Published by Image Comics, Nights is a supernatural coming-of-age story centered around a group of friends navigating life, relationships and mysterious paranormal events. The adaptation will be produced in collaboration with Kennedy and Formisano.

Nights isn’t the type of comic you read and say, ‘Oh neat, cool art, good story,’ and then put back on the shelf with all the other comics that have cool art and good stories. Nights is a generational experience in the making,” said Alexei Bochenek, Creative Director at Titmouse. “Reading it reminds me of when I used to stay up late watching FLCL at midnight on Toonami, having my mind blown not just by how dynamic it was, but by how seen it made me feel, a mirror to my whole self, good and bad, dreams and fears. If you know you know. I want to bring that feeling back to the animation fans like me who have been chasing it ever since, and introduce a whole new audience to the experience of discovering themselves through a new show that they feel seen by and become huge champions of, too. That’s what Nights is.”

“It’s unbelievable to think that the incredibly talented people behind some of my favorite shows are now bringing Nights to life,” said Formisano. “As a fan of Titmouse’s works for years, it’s a dream come true. It’s a huge honor to work with a team who loves this story as much as Wyatt and I do, and I can’t wait for fans to see what we create together.”

Nights c/o Image Comics

The animated series producers aim to stay true to the comic book’s distinctive artistic style and storytelling, while introducing audiences to new layers of depth and imagination in the world of Nights — a nostalgic and dreamlike place, where monsters and vampires are real, and the late ‘90s and early 2000s vibes are off the charts. Titmouse pitches a cinematic blend of indie and anime influences that will be beautiful, colorful and contemporary, delivering both frights and feels in much the same vein as the original comics.

The Nights comic book series launched at Image Comics in 2024 to critical acclaim, with the first 12-issue story arc titled, “Season One.” Nights Vol. 1 which collects “Part One” of the series, Nights #1-6, is available now at comic-book shops, independent bookstores, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Indigo and Waterstones, and across many digital platforms. The “Season One” finale issue, Nights #12, is now also available at comic-book shops, and the “Season Two” premiere issue, Nights #13, will be available at comic-book shops on Wednesday, February 26.

Nights is also available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
