Interview: SpongeBob’s Little Green Nemesis Takes Center Stage in ‘Plankton: The Movie’

PLANKTON: THE MOVIE - Plankton’s world is flipped upside down when his plan for world domination is thwarted. Cr: Netflix/Nickelodeon Movies © 2025

Who doesn’t love a mischievous microorganism?  Back in July 1999, when Plankton first appeared on Nickelodeon’s recently launched show SpongeBob SquarePants, few would have guessed that the cyclops copepod would be alive and kicking over 25 years later. Voiced by the prolific Mr. Lawrence, and accompanied by his mad supercomputer, Karen (Jill Talley), Plankton is now starring in his own movie, which premieres on Netflix in March.

Plankton and Karen, who began as minor characters in early seasons of the show, are the married owners of the unsuccessful Chum Bucket restaurant. They are always coming up with schemes to steal the famous Krabby Patty recipe from Mr. Krabs’ popular Krusty Krab restaurant. In the new movie, Plankton’s lifelong dreams of world domination are scuttled when his long-suffering AI wife decides to take charge. Directed by Dave Needham (The Loud House Movie), The Plankton Movie is based on a story by Mr. Lawrence, with a screenplay by Lawrence, Kaz and Chris Viscardi. The show’s longtime voice actors Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown and Rodger Bumpass also reprise their roles.

Mr. Lawrence’s Little Fiend

“I came up with the idea for the movie four or five years ago,”  Mr. Lawrence (aka Douglas Lawrence Osowski)  tells Animation Magazine. “In my head, it was going to be a half-hour special for the series, but around the same time, the studio was asking us to come up with new movies for Sandy and Plankton, and my story (Karen becoming Plankton) was perfect for a movie.”

Lawrence, who is largely responsible for fleshing out Plankton’s character throughout the series, believes that he is a fascinating villain. “His frustrations are relatable to everyone, even though his aspirations to rule the world are not,” he explains. “Plankton is the only character who’s married on the show, so he has a home life that’s a bit more realistic than the others. But because of his size and his ego, he never really wins or gets what he wants. He becomes sympathetic but easy to laugh at. People tell me sometimes that they feel Plankton’s pain. And I guess that means I’m getting to the root of something very human with my portrayal. He’s insane, he’s megalomaniacal, he’s a criminal, but he’s got a wife pointing out his faults all the time, [which] makes him funny and humble even though he’s screaming in protest. There’s a little part of Plankton in all of us, a very small and angry part, but it’s there!”

The film’s executive producers are none other than franchise veterans Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller. “When Vince and I took over the show about 10 years ago, all of these projects were in the pipeline, and now we’re finally getting to roll them out, because everything takes so long to develop and produce,” says Ceccarelli. “This project was being written and developed at the same time as the next SpongeBob movie, which will be coming out later this year. This one was on top of The Sandy Cheeks Movie as well, and we were working on both projects around the same time.”

“Doug (Lawrence) remained a constant throughout the whole thing, like from beginning to end,” says Ceccarelli. “It was sort of Doug’s movie, and it’s really helpful when he’s writing his voice. He is this unique talent, as he’s been both a writer and a main character on the show since the early days. So, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore both sides of what he has to offer for the show.”

“This movie is a real up-close, personal look at Plankton and Karen’s relationship, which we’ve explored before but not on this nitty-gritty ‘nuts and bolts’ level,” Waller adds. “Another reason why we love it is because it slowly and sneakily became a great musical project, which is unusual for us as well,” says Waller.

“How often do you have a movie with a star where he sings an entire song about what a total jerk he is?” Ceccarelli asks. “We’ve always been a fans of Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords), and working with musical stars like Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh (Devo) and Linda Perry has been a dream come true.”

Waller also points out that SpongeBob creator, the late, great Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away in 2018, also tried to include a nice selection of eclectic bands to provide music for the show. “It was something that you don’t expect to get weaved into the show, and we just wanted to carry on that great tradition.”

For the film’s director, Dave Needham, the movie provided a chance to work on something that was different from earlier material. “This one was a bit weirder and a little bit darker [and] sits just to the edge of what you’d expect from a SpongeBob movie,” he says. “Of course, Karen becomes the real villain of this story, and it’s hilarious to see Plankton go through all the stages of grief and revenge and acceptance to kind of become the hero. Not only that, but we got to play with different animation styles, from 1920s rubber hose to a 1980s Transformers vibe in different sequences!”

We learn about Plankton’s childhood in a cleverly animated sequence which pays homage to classic rubber-hose animated shorts.

Eclectic Stylings

The movie also stands out because of the way it mixes CG animation with various kinds of 2D animation. (The film’s animation was produced by four studios: ReDefine, Mikros Animation, Yukfoo Animation and mcbess.)

“We have four different styles of animation, as well as live action in this movie,” adds Waller. “It’s really a wild trip!”  “The visual style is just as eclectic as the music styles we included in the feature,” adds Ceccarelli. “We’ve always been a big fan of mixing different styles. The storyline offered a structure where we could have different parts of Plankton’s life being shown in different animation styles, so we jumped on that opportunity. It might be a cliché, but we think there’s never a dull moment! If you don’t like something, just give it seconds, and the style will change, and you’ll see something completely different. We even have exciting battle scenes with giant robots.”

Since yet another SpongeBob movie is coming later this year, we asked the producers to give us a special scoop on the project. “We are sworn to secrecy, so we can’t tell you much, except that it’s going to be awesome,” says Waller. “However, I can give you a little Easter egg about The Plankton Movie: When you watch the most recent trailer, you’ll see a live-action shot of a man wearing a wet suit running toward the camera as he screams his brains out. That’s Mr. Lawrence!”

The Plankton Movie premieres on Netflix on March 7.

Foundry Releases Nuke 16.0 Featuring Native Variable-Enabled Workflows

0
Foundry's Nuke 16.9 offers new workflows that speed up compositing and reviews.

Creative software developer Foundry has released Nuke 16.0, with features set to transform compositing and review workflows by speeding up review and cutting time spent on repetitive tasks, reducing pipeline inefficiencies.

To help artists spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on creativity, Nuke 16.0 introduces native variable-enabled workflows, making multi-shot compositing a seamless, intuitive part of compositing in Nuke. In a major update to compositing workflows, these updates give artists the option to apply changes to multiple shots at once within the same script. At its core, Graph Scope Variables unlock a powerful new way of compositing, enabling artists and studios to efficiently manage multiple shots, sequences, and variations without duplications.

Juan Salazar, Foundry’s director of product, compositing and finishing notes,“Nuke was first developed around a single-shot compositing workflow. Now, over 25 years later, deadlines continue to get tighter while shot volume and complexity climbs. Our goal is to relieve some of the pressure compositors face, and enable them to spend more time on their artistry and less time manually applying changes to shots. Nuke 16.0’s new multishot workflow features will enable new ways of working for studios of all sizes; we can’t wait to see them in use.”

Improvements in Nuke 16.0 will save time when working across the Node Graph, BlinkScript, and the timeline, for better team collaboration and efficiency.

Refinements to the roto node bring performance improvements when working with roto at scale, with enhanced playback, motion blur, and interactivity responsiveness. Working in the Node Graph is now faster and smoother too, giving artists the ability to view and edit the contents of Groups without opening a new tab, while new Link Nodes enable simultaneous changes to nodes.

With major improvements to the feedback loop, vfx supervisors and editors working from the Nuke Studio or Hiero timeline can approve and deliver shots faster than ever before. New Multichannel Soft Effects help supervisors audition shots and clearly communicate creative intent. The Contact Sheet allows for quick and easy shot comparison, and Quick Export makes exporting from the timeline up to 12 times faster.

Nuke 16.0 is also making BlinkScript easier to use, and a more powerful and intuitive tool for artists and studios to adopt. With these updates artists can read, write, and troubleshoot their code with ease, for distinct custom effect creation that’s more accessible than ever.

Nuke 16.0: Contact sheet in Hieroplayer

What’s new in Nuke 16.0 — in detail

Multishot workflows

  • Graph Scope Variables: Create a ‘context’ that applies to multiple shots or part of the script. Apply single scripts to multiple shots or entire sequences based on variables.
  • Variables Panel: Full visibility when working across multiple shots, for artists to easily interact with the available Variables in a script.
  • VariableSwitch node: Similar to the Switch node but enables you to create “split and join” workflows based on the variables set for your multishot workflow.
  • VariableGroup node: Convenient Node Graph grouping for working with variables.
  • GSV in LiveGroups: Work in one group across multiple scripts, with other artists working in different sections or shots of the same script.
  • GSV command-line render: Specify variables in the command line, and send different shots to your render farms.
  • Nuke 16: Multishot UI

Artist tools

  • Group Node internal view: See and edit the contents of Groups and LiveGroups within the same Node Graph.
  • Link nodes: Create linked copies of nodes and have changes updated in both nodes, whilst optionally being able to override any of the knobs.
  • Roto performance improvements: Improved performance when working with roto at scale, including playback, motion blur performance, and improved interactivity.

3D System (Beta)

  • Core node improvements: UI updates based on artist feedback and new snap controls for faster geo and pivot manipulation.
  • GeoConstrain node: New constraint types, the ability to constrain to faces and vertices, or offset constraints in time and space.
  • GeoXformPrim node: Create and edit Xforms in your USD stage to help streamline scene management.
  • ScanlineRender2: A new ray tracing based architecture with improvements to sampling, motion blur, AOV outputs and more.
  • USD version 24.05: To keep your pipeline integrations running smoothly.
  • Blankscript Editor

BlinkScript

  • New and improved BlinkScript Editor: Formatting changes, error handling updates, keyboard shortcuts, and more that make it easier to create innovative custom effects.
  • BlinkScript Library Files: Artists can now write their own functions for common operations and read these files into multiple BlinkScripts.
  • BlinkScript Safety Rails: Catch and report operations that could cause problems when run directly on the underlying processor.

Timeline tools

  • Quick Export: Exporting from the timeline is now up to 12 times faster.
  • Multichannel Soft Effects: More control from the timeline with new mask-enabled Soft Effects that make it easier to audition shots and convey creative intent with artists.
  • Contact Sheet: Provides a flexible viewing environment for easier shot review, populated via the choice of two modes — Pick Mode or Tag Mode.

Disney Branded Television has ordered a fifth season of Disney Jr. and Marvel’s preschool super-hero hit Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends. The news comes on the heels of the series recently moving ahead of both PAW Patrol and CoComelon to become the No. 2 streaming series for Kids and Boys 2-5 during the last quarter of 2024, second only to Bluey.

Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends is what happens when two storytelling powerhouses — Marvel and Disney Jr. — come together to introduce the next generation to the world of Super Heroes,” said Ayo Davis, President, Disney Branded Television. “We love this show, and it’s been incredible to see how much kids do too. Team Spidey’s adventures aren’t slowing down anytime soon, and we can’t wait to bring even more stories, characters and action-packed fun for years to come.”

Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, added, “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s most iconic characters, beloved by fans of all ages for over 60 years. These characters can speak to audiences of all ages, and Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends is a fun, vibrant entry point for kids to the wider Marvel Universe. There’s plenty more adventures ahead for Spidey, Spin and Ghost-Spider, and we’re excited to partner with Disney Branded Television on a fifth season.”

Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends follows the adventures of Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales as they team up with Super Heroes to defeat foes and learn that teamwork is the best way to save the day. Geared toward preschoolers and their families, the Spidey Team models the importance of helping others and highlights themes of friendship, cooperation and problem-solving.

The first full-length Marvel preschool series, it originally premiered in August 2021 and since then has continued to grow in popularity, reaching its highest quarter ever in Q424 (Nielsen). With over 2billion views across Disney Jr. and Marvel HQ YouTube channels and over 1 billion hours watched across linear and streaming on Disney+ in the U.S., the series is also a hit internationally.

This popularity extends off-screen as well, ranking in the top five-selling overall preschool toy licenses globally (Circana Retail Tracking). Its stories and characters also resonate in other formats such as books and music, including a “My First Comic” from Marvel Press, multiple soundtracks from Walt Disney Records, and a Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends-themed segment during the popular Disney Jr. Live on Tour: Let’s Play traveling stage show.

The animated series is produced by Disney Jr. and Marvel Studios in association with Atomic Cartoons. Harrison Wilcox, Bart Jennett and Chris Moreno are executive producers, alongside Becca Topol, who serves as producer/story editor, and Steve Grover as supervising producer. The series features music by Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) who serves as composer, songwriter and also performs the theme song.

Season 3 is currently airing on Disney Jr., with some episodes available on Disney+. In addition, 22% of the directors and 35% of the main producers are women. Climate change and environmental issues also play a big part in many of the selected movies: 26% tell a story promoting ecology and sustainable behavior, and 46% of the projects have already implemented some elements and procedures such as reduction of waste logistics and energy optimization, etc.”

A Cartoon Movie Sampler

Here are some of the animated European projects that caught our attention before the event. Please visit our website for our full report from Bordeaux in March:

Basia and a Doggy Summer

Basia and a Doggy Summer

What is not to love about a charming 2D-animated movie about a young girl’s beautiful friendship with a clever dog during a summer seaside vacation? Perfect for the younger set, Basia and a Doggy Summer is based on a popular book series by Polish children’s author Zofia Stanecka and is directed by Marcin Wasilewski (Rock Bottom, Lost Senses) with a script by Szymon Jachimek. The 75-minute feature is produced by Robert Jaszczurowski (Grupa Smacznego/GS Animation) and co-produced by Ilan Urroz (Foliascope) and Agnė Adomėnė (Lithuania). Two paws up, for sure!

Born in the Jungle

Born in the Jungle

Latvian director Edmunds Jansons is no stranger to Cartoon Movie. His last movie — Jacob, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs — was a big hit at the event a few years ago. He brings another promising new title to Bordeaux this year: Born in the Jungle, a beautifully drawn feature about a girl who must find her younger brother after he disappears in the rainforest during a family vacation. Adding a bit more mystery to the plotline is a magical furry creature who lives in the Tepui mountains. The new pic is produced by Sabine Andersone (Atom Art) and co-produced by Letko veteran producer Piotr Szczepanowicz (Even Mice Belong in Heaven, Acid Rain) and Vladimír Lhoták (Hausboot). Dandelooo is the film’s global sales agent. Thank God for these exciting family vacations that keep our eyes glued to the screen!

Condenaditos

Condenaditos

Bolivia’s recent political history complicates a young girl’s family that are affected by a multigenerational curse in writer/director Matisse Gonzalez’s fascinating new movie, Condnenaditos (a.k.a. Cursed Children). The talented Bolivian-born director, who is based in Germany, has been a familiar face at Pixelatl and Ventana Sur, and her upcoming movie was also pitched at Annecy a few years ago. The 2D film is described as a “comedy for adults with autobiographical shades.” The French-German co-pro, which is currently in development, is produced by Stefan Michel (Studio Seufz), Nidia Santiago and Edwina Liard (Ikki Films). It definitely sounds like a labor of love that is worth the wait to see on the big screen in the years ahead.

How to Deal with Shattering Geists

How to Deal with Shattering Geists

A 10-year-old boy named Henry who lives alone with his father discovers that whenever his mother’s name is mentioned, violent winds appear out of nowhere and shatter everything around him (“Geist” is a German word that can mean ghost, spirit or mind). After a terrible accident at school, he realizes that it’s time to solve the mystery in the new 2D-animated movie How to Deal with Shattering Geists, directed and co-written by Kajsa Næss, who also directed the acclaimed 2022 feature Titina. The Norwegian-Dutch co-production is produced by Lisa Fearnley (Mikrofilm) and Janneke van de Kerkhof (Submarine Animation) and is being presented at Cartoon Movie in concept stage.

Karmic Knot

Karmic Knot

There’s always a good reason to celebrate when Latvian-born, Brooklyn-based auteur Signe Baumane embarks on a new project. The talented writer-director, who is best known for shorts such as Teat Beat of Sex and award-winning features Rocks in My Pockets and My Love Affair with Marriage, will bring her third feature-length project to Cartoon Movie this year. Karmic Knot is described as an epic chronicle of the life and times of a tightly knit family in Latvia that make a fortune by growing and selling rose cultivars. As the Soviet Union starts to fall apart, the family’s fate also changes, and they lose all their savings when the currency collapses. This semiautobiographical tale is bound to have the director’s trademark mix of poignant dramatic points and universal humor. The 90-minute feature will mix 2D, CG and stop-motion animation and will be produced by Dominiks Jarmakovičs (Latvia’s Studio Locomotive) and Sturgis Warner (U.S.), who also produced Baumane’s previous films. In short, a truly distinctive movie worth keeping an eye on.

Lou and the Glacier’s Secret

An eight-year-old Colombian girl named Hilda, her father Bonifacio and their pet pig Tulipán are the emotional centers of promising new title My Dad the Truck. Directed by María Cristina Pérez González, the 2D-animated movie follows the adventures of the trio as they leave their fire-ravaged farm in the middle of the Colombian mountains to search for a better life in the city. In other words, un viaje realmente fascinante!

Rose and the Marmots

Rose and the Marmots

After making a big splash with his 2022 stop-motion feature, French helmer Alain Ughetto is back at Cartoon Movie with another period piece. To make ends meet, Rose leaves her grandfather behind and travels to the big city and makes a leaving by performing with her trained marmots. The script is penned by Alexis Galmot, who also wrote the screenplay for Ughetto’s previous movie. The innovative movie’s producers are Alexandre Cornu (Les Films de Trambour de Soie), Shiraz Bazin-Moussi (WeJustKids), Enrica Capra (Graffiti Film) and Luis Correia (Ocidental Filmes). We can’t wait to see this Dickensian, CG-animated movie, Monsieur Ughetto: You had us at trained marmots!

Tales from the Magic Garden

Tales from the Magic Garden

Three children make up their own stories when they spend the night at their grandfather house in the charming stop-motion movie based on Czech author Arnošt Goldflam’s book. Tales from the Magic Garden, which also premiered at this year’s prestigious Berlin Intl. Film Festival, combines elements of fantasy and humor and pays tribute to the power of imagination. A co-pro between Maurfilm (Czech Republic), Artichoke (Slovakia), ZVVIKS (Slovenia) and Vivement Lundi ! (France), the anthology is produced by Martin Vandas, Alena Vandasová, Juraj Krasnohorsky, Henrieta Cvangová, Kolja Saksida, Jean-François Le Corre and Mathieu Courtois. The ambitious project’s directors are David Súkup, Patrik Pašš, Leon Vidmar and Jean-Claude Rozec. “Children’s programming often avoid the topic of death for fear of evoking negative emotions, leaving children who experience a loss feeling isolated, as if no one acknowledges what has happened,” says Rozec (Tadpole). “Despite the creative and financial risks, the producers decided to approach this sensitive topic in a careful and thoughtful way, and that’s why this film is so important to me.”

Peppa Pig

Today, Hasbro revealed pig news for Peppa Pig and family with the announcement that Mummy Pig is pregnant! After more than 20 years of inspiring confidence and connection in preschoolers and their parents, the family of four is about to undergo an evolution that will change the brand and entertainment property forever.

Kylie Kelce — soon to be a mother of four — first broke Mummy Pig’s baby news in the U.S. with an exclusive interview tied to her podcast, Not Gonna Lie, a Wave Original series.

This exciting expansion will be showcased in a new episode, Peppa Pig – “The Big Announcement”  premiering March 31 at 9 a.m. EST / PST on Nickelodeon.

The new Season 10 episode will feature Mummy and Daddy Pig sharing the exciting news with Peppa and her brother, George. While Peppa is already a big sister to George, fans will see her welcome and adjust to having a new baby sister or brother. Little ones around the world will see Peppa step into a bigger role with her new youngest sibling arriving in Season 11 later this year.

“A transformative new era is unfolding for Peppa Pig and her family! As any family that has welcomed a new addition knows, everything is about to change. A baby brings a special dynamic that will warm hearts as fans celebrate this new exciting time alongside Peppa’s family,” said Esra Cafer, Hasbro’s SVP of Franchise Strategy and Management, Preschool & Fashion.

As a big sister, Peppa Pig’s relationship with little brother George has provided sweet moments throughout the years, as well as many important lessons about confidence and how to be a good sibling. As the new family dynamic develops, Peppa will have many opportunities to show George the ropes alongside viewers who may be adapting to changes and ‘big feelings’ in their own families. With Mummy and Daddy Pig now outnumbered, they experience their own opportunities to evolve, discovering new ways to parent together, adapting to new challenges and taking each muddy puddle they encounter in stride.

In the lead-up to the arrival of the Pig family’s fifth member, new content revealing Baby Pig’s gender, name and arrival will roll out throughout 2025, along with exciting special events and fresh products to accommodate the growing brood.

Peppa Pig is a British animated preschool series that has been airing for 20 years in over 180 territories. The show follows Peppa Pig, a cheeky little piggy who lives with her family — younger brother George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig — as well as her diverse community of friends. Globally successful, the brand connects with consumers across every touchpoint, from TV to theme parks to retail. As a lifelong friend, Peppa Pig encourages kids to jump in together and explore the world around them, while helping give kids the confidence to treat every first step as a new adventure, from the everyday to the epic.

Just thirty days remain until humanity is doomed to extinction. The only way to save the world is to get the cure that only Skinner knows. For that we must first find him.

“Lazarus” is a team of five agents gathered from various corners of the world to do just that. Can they save humanity? And what is Skinner’s true purpose?

Directors of ‘Tales from the Magic Garden’ Discuss Their Enchanting Stop-Motion Anthology

0
Tales form the Magic Garden
Tales form the Magic Garden

The new stop-motion European animated anthology feature Tales from the Magic Garden was among the big co-productions premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival this month. Based on the children’s fairytale book Of Unwanted Things and People by Czech author Arnošt Goldflam, the movie combines elements of fantasy, humor and the connective power of imagination.

The charming feature tells the story of three children who spend the night at their grandfather’s house for the first time since the passing of their grandmother, a master storyteller. Unable to fall asleep without a bedtime story, the children decide to make up their own stories and embark on a journey that shows them that storytelling can help them cope with life’s challenges and offer solace through imagination.

We had the chance to chat with three of the film’s directors; David Súkup, Patrik Pašš and Leon Vidmar. (We’ll have to catch up with the fourth director, Jean-Claude Rozec, at later date!). Here is what the helmers told us about their labor of love.

Tales form the Magic Garden

Animation Magazine: Congrats on the premiere of your movie in Berlin this month. So, let’s start from the beginning. Can you tell us little bit about how you got involved with this project?

Sukup

David Súkup: I was the first of all the directors to get involved in the project. Martin Vandas approached me and offered me the chance to choose any short story by A. Goldflam. This was at a time when only one short story was planned as a short film. We started working on our part in March 2018 and filming took about nine months.

Vidmar

Leon Vidmar: I was invited to the project by Kolja Saksida (Slovenian producer) and he by Martin Vandas(Czech producer) who introduced the idea of adapting stories from Goldflam’s book and making an anthology with three more directors from different countries. It was basically making our own shorts, but with same art designer, music composer, sound designer, editor and colorist — so the whole project would feel more unified. My section started in 2017 with development and then on and off till few weeks back. It’s different from country to country, but shooting of only our part of the film too about seven months.

Pašš:

Patrik Pašš: I was invited to the project by the producer Juraj Krasnohorský from Artichoke to revise the then script of the Slovakian story Ohryzené ohryzky (Old Apple Cores). Later, I worked on the storyboard and animatic. Finally, Juraj and the lead animator Marek Jasaň convinced me to direct the film. However, due to family reasons, I couldn’t be present in the animation studio during the shooting, so after an intensive month of preparation, during which the entire process was set up, I was represented by assistant director Monika Houdková, with whom I communicated daily online.

It took 10 years from the idea to completion, and I was part of the production team for the last four or five years. The idea from the beginning was to create a feature film by adapting short stories from Arnošt Goldflam’s book. The Czech story by director David Súkup was the first to be shot and helped finance the film. The Slovenian, Slovakian and French stories were added gradually. The French story, which in the movie serves as a present reality from which we dive into imaginary stories, is not an adaptation of Goldflam’s book. But it is nevertheless inspired by Goldflam’s world, so much so that one of the main characters, Grandpa, is actually modeled after Arnošt Goldflam and his own voice is also used in the Czech version — which I think is a nice tribute to the author.

Tales form the Magic Garden
“Tales from the Magic Garden” is a new European stop-motion anthology feature, which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

What really attracted to you to Tales from the Magic Garden?

David: I was interested in stories which are melancholic, sometimes sad, sometimes a little sharp. But like in a good fairy tale, everything ends well in the end. But above all, these fairy tales open up significantly different topics than the usual mainstream.

Leon: I guess the challenge was to tell the story of grief in a positive, heartwarming way.

Patrik: Initially, it was the desire to solve some screenwriting problems. Every screenplay is a puzzle where you need to identify and arrange its important elements into an ideal shape, and that’s very entertaining. But the more energy I put into the project, the more personal it became, and when the characters came to life after character animation tests, I started to see the project as a living organism, like a friend whom I must respect and accept.

What are the qualities that make this movie stand out in today’s busy animation field?

David: In our film we open up the serious topics of the death of someone close to us. We show how the main character copes with this situation and we give hope for the future that time and love will help overcome even these sad moments.

Leon: I guess because it’s children’s film but the topic is hard — death and grief — but it’s shown how the power of storytelling can have a healing effect and it brings hope.

Patrik: The ambition to communicate adult themes of losing a loved one, loneliness, and fear to child viewers in a subtle way. Since production companies and distributors approach these themes with caution in children’s films, I truly appreciate the courage of our production companies Artichoke, MAUR Film, ZVVIKS and Vivement Lundi!

What was the approximate budget?

Patrik: The budget was around 3 million euros, which is quite low for European productions and may seem surprisingly low considering the production value of the beautiful stop-motion puppet animation we see on screen. The low budget is still a necessity in Central and Eastern European countries, as film funds have limited capacity. When the financing of the film began, in Slovenia and Slovakia (two of the four producing countries), there had not been a previously produced animated feature film since the time of communism, i.e. since 1989.

How tall are the puppets, what are they made of and how many sets were used in the movie?

David: The puppets are about 20 centimeters tall. Children are smaller. The skeleton of the handles is made of iron. The rest is a combination of modeling clay, textile, latex. My story is quite intimate and most of it takes place in an apartment, so there were fewer sets here than in the other stories. There were about six sets.

Leon: The puppets were different sizes, the biggest I think was almost 30cm tall. It depends on the puppet, for example the heads from “human” characters were from resin and had detachable mouths for lip sync.  Silicon was used for the hands. The body had stainless armature skeleton and sponge underneath the textile clothes. Birds on the other hand were all resin and had wire armature. We used eight sets in our section of the movie.

Patrik: Most of the puppets are between 20 and 25cm tall, with the smallest children being around 10cm tall. They are made of hardened and painted resin on an iron armature with joints. Hands and legs are made of silicone. Hair and fur were also used for some puppets, and of course textile, metal or feathers for clothing and accessories. The film consists of four parts, each filmed in a different country. Each part had at least five main sets, but these were divided into smaller parts to make the shooting possible. For example, the old garden where the magical beast lives in the central part of the film was a huge set five meters long and wide. The result on screen is that you can see a large variety of sets and characters, which adds to the visual richness of the film.

How many people worked on the movie?

David: About 20 people worked on my story directly in the studio and many others worked on audio and video post-production.

Leon: We had about nine people on the set while shooting.

Patrik: The credits are very long. There were four production countries, with four directors and four complete production and shooting teams in four different European cities. So far there are about 185 people. And there will be more, because the national language versions in Slovakian, Slovenian and French are only now being produced!

What were the toughest aspects of the project for you?

David: In my story it is the moment when the children find themselves alone without their parents and have to cope with their loss. It was important to show this moment sensitively, but at the same time I wanted to show it truthfully, because such things happen in life and it is not good to hide anything from children.

Leon: Shooting the flying scenes using greenscreen was the toughest.

Patrik: Tales from the Magic Garden was my first puppet-animated film. For fear of disappointing the producer and collaborators, I prepared myself very thoroughly as a director. During the month of preparation before shooting, I had to learn the technicalities from scratch, but since everyone around me were experienced professionals, the actual shooting process went smoothly.

The biggest challenge was to give creative freedom to the different production departments so they could fully develop their creativity while trying to stay true to my vision as a director. It was a very organic and enriching experience, and I was very lucky to work with such talented people on my closest team. But I can see that the same was true for my other fellow directors.

How would you describe the animation scene in your country in 2025?

David: In the Czech Republic, there is a long tradition of television series for children that are broadcast before bedtime. They are called “Good Night Stories.” Thanks to this, some directors can continuously work in their field and prepare their independent work in the meantime.

But working on their independent projects is very lengthy because getting financing in the Czech Republic and from co-productions is very difficult. That is why in our country the preparation of a full-length animated film takes up to 10 years. Which is very unpleasant because you don’t know whether your story will still be relevant to the audience after such a long time.

Leon: It’s evolving, we are growing by numbers and enthusiasm for animation in general feels like it’s on the rise.

Patrik: Ten years ago, when this film was starting, only short films could be produced in Slovakia. The industry and funding were too limited to make a feature film possible. Today, Slovakia is already co-majority or minority co-producer of several very successful feature films and many award-winning short films in recent years. Often thanks to the support of Eurimages and Creative Europe MEDIA, which are crucial for the financing of Slovak films. The same applies to television series.

Just for Artichoke, this is the second animated feature film to premiere in Berlin after White Plastic Sky in 2023. Considering the small size of the country and the still quite limited funding, it’s therefore surprising that the Slovakian animation scene is developing very well and perhaps represents Slovakian cinema more internationally than fiction or documentary films — at least in recent years.

What do you hope worldwide audiences will take away from the movie?

David: I would like the audience to take away the joy with which we made our stories and the hope that everything will turn out well … and if it’s not good, it’s not the end yet!

Leon: When faced with tragedy and loss, there are ways to overcome grief and have hope.

Patrik: I hope that alongside entertainment thanks to the story and the visual beauty on screen, the film will help facilitate dialogue between parents and children on difficult topics that are sometimes challenging to communicate properly, keeping in mind children’s sensitivity.
