Pete Candeland Teams with ‘Pacific Rim’ Writers, Gris Grimly for Animated Horror Series ‘Gods and Monsters’

Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein

Pete Candeland, the animation director behind the Gorillaz music videos and The Beatles: Rock Band video game cinematic, is collaborating with screenwriters Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Saw series, The Collector series, Pacific Rim) and Axis Studios (Scrooge: A Christmas Carol; Love, Death + Robots; Happy!) on a new animated horror series, Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein.

The project aims to break new ground in the genre, conjured with the macabre imagery of award-winning graphic novelist Gris Grimly, whose book inspired Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio.

“Animation works best in extremes. It has been gradually growing a broader audience, moving like No-Face from Spirited Away, gathering fans with cutting-edge music videos, iconic games and breakthrough shows like Arcane and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Next: Horror,” says Candeland. “I want the gamers to put down their controllers, music lovers to see the potential of sound and vision in a frightening new way, and horror fans to shout why haven’t we seen this before? I want all of us on the edge of our seats, consumed by the thrill-ride that is Gods and Monsters.”

Set against a visually fantastical European backdrop and inspired by Grimly’s punk rock re-imagining of famous monsters, Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein will present a fresh take on the manipulative relationship between Victor Frankenstein, his partner in crime Elizabeth, their famously monstrous creation, as well as other re-imagined monster horror icons.

Blending cutting edge animation technology with Candeland’s creative signature, the series will weave Mary Shelley’s classic tale of terror together with modern-day themes such as the dangers of tech, materialism and alienation, all backed by a contemporary rock and roll soundtrack.

Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein

“Axis is a studio of proud genre nerds and ultra fans. We see first hand the global appetite for elevated, mold-smashing, high-end animated shows,” observes Andrew Pearce, Axis Studios’ Executive Producer. “As attitudes to animation shift, our work seeks to take people to more unusual, surprising and often darker places. So, we’re thrilled to be part of this opportunity to create a horror monster-verse with a dream cast of creatives — cannot wait to share it with the world!”

The series will be executive produced by Jason Lust of Soluble Fish Productions, executive producer on 2023’s Academy Award-winning Best Animated Feature Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio; Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber of Ranger 7 Films, and Axis Studios.

Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein

“Working with Gris on launching and sculpting and helping produce Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio was a career defining moment for Gris and myself, and we felt compelled to follow up that result with one of Gris’ most coveted and postmodern retellings yet,” says Lust. “And when you add the direction of Pete Candeland with the writing of Patrick and Marcus along with Axis, the highly talented VFX and animation house, we’re destined to break some new ground with this show, much like Pinocchio did. So, I couldn’t be more excited to begin executing this undeniable vision with this team.”

Gods and Monsters Chapter One: The Death of Victor Frankenstein

Callaghan adds, “As a life-long fan of horror and animation, Gods and Monsters is the show I’ve been waiting for. Building out a new monster horror universe the way we envision is a true fan’s dream (or nightmare) come true, and with this creative team, it will surely be as scary as it is visually jaw-dropping.”

Candeland is represented by Verve Talent and Literary Agency, Melton & Dunstan by Verve and Underground, Grimly by Gotham Group, Lust and Soluble Fish by Gersh, and Axis Studios is repped by Tarik Heitmann of Kinetic Media.

Prime Video, Amazon Kids+ Hatch ‘Angry Birds Mystery Island’ Toon with Rovio

Today, Prime Video and Amazon Kids+ announced a series order for Angry Birds Mystery Island, from Eric Rogers (Futurama) and Titmouse. Over the course of 24 episodes in the first season, the show promises lots of fun, mystery and adventure, with irreverent humor and pop culture references for the whole family.

“We’re excited to work with Amazon to add a new chapter to the Hatchlings’ story in Angry Birds Mystery Island,” comments Rovio’s Head of Brand Licensing, Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala. “I’m sure fans of the Hatchlings will be eager to see them in their own series, with speaking voices for the first time.”

The animated series features an ensemble cast that includes Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Kate Micucci (Scooby-Doo!), Dominic Monaghan (The Lord of the Rings) and Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live).

“Working with such a dream team and cast has been the highlight of my career. Together, we are hatching a series full of comedy, heart, and binge-worthy mystery, filled with laugh-out-loud moments,” says showrunner, head writer and executive producer Rogers.

Angry Birds Mystery Island introduces three new Hatchling characters — Mia, Rosie and Buddy — and a foreign-exchange piglet named Hamylton. These rambunctious tweens receive an all-expenses-paid (and completely un-asked-for) island getaway, when they are mistakenly catapulted onto an uncharted island. Left to explore the exotic sights, smells and unexplained phenomena of their new environment without any adults around, the ragtag bunch quickly learns that, in order to survive and make it back home, they will need to unlock the mysteries of the island together.

“It’s exciting to expand the Angry Birds universe with endearing new characters and multilayered storytelling that speaks equally to kids and kids at heart,” says Veronica Pickett, Head of Original Series at Amazon Kids+.

Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation, Amazon Studios, notes, “The Angry Birds captivated people of all ages and became a global phenomenon with the debut of their first game, and their cultural presence has remained steadfast. We are excited by the opportunity to expand the Hatchlings’ world into a family series for our global customers to enjoy even more stories around these beloved birds.”

Chris Prynoski (The Legend of Vox Machina), Shannon Prynoski (Fairfax), Antonio Canobbio (Arlo the Alligator Boy) and Ben Kalina (Harriet the Spy) at Titmouse will executive produce along with Rogers.

Mystery Island is the first Angry Birds series created with Amazon, and will be available exclusively through Prime Video and Amazon Kids+. More details will be announced soon.

Edward James Olmos to Voice New Villain in ‘Moon Girl’ S2

Disney Branded Television has unveiled an addition to the rogue’s gallery of nefarious super villains plaguing New York City in Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Season 2: Molecule Man! This extraterrestrial terror will be one of the main antagonists of the season, debuting in the season premiere episode.

Molecule Man is a Marvel Comics character introduced in Fantastic Four #20 (1963), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Per DBTV:

He is a powerful being with the ability to manipulate nonliving organic matter. Often feeling like there was no place for him, he escaped to a whole new planet and used his powers to create an incredible world of natural wonder, soon making it a popular destination for aliens and beings across the multiverse!

As Molecule Man was one of The Beyonder’s main adversaries in the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, the animated series’ creative team wanted to cast an actor with an equally powerful vocal presence to that of executive producer and voice star Laurence Fishburne. A perfect fit was found in Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning, Oscar-nominated actor Edward James Olmos.

Known for his roles in TV’s Miami Vice and Mayans MC as well as films like Stand and Deliver, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, Olmos is no stranger to animation. The L.A.-born actor, director & producer has previously stepped into the booth for beloved films such as DreamWorks’ The Road to El Dorado, Pixar’s Coco and the Disney-produced English dub for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. He also featured in the Mexican-American co-pro El Americano and episodes of The BatmanThe Simpsons and Elena of Avalor.

Molecule Man [© Marvel] as he appears in ‘Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette (voiced by Diamond White) and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur (Fred Tatasciore). After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the city’s Lower East Side from danger. Based on the hit comic books and featuring Marvel’s first African-American teenage girl super hero, the 2D animated series also stars Libe Barer, Alfre Woodard, Sasheer Zamata, Jermaine Fowler, Gary Anthony Williams and Laurence Fishburne as The Beyonder.

The series is executive produced by Fishburne and Helen Sugland’s Cinema Gypsy Productions and Emmy winne r Steve Loter. Grammy Award winner Raphael Saadiq serves as executive music producer.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur premiered on Disney Channel in February; Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+. Read more about it in this feature story from the March ’23 issue of Animation Magazine.

Gaumont Unites Animation Unit in Europe Under Terry Kalagian

Gaumont announced today the centralization of its Animation, Kids & Family division in Europe under the leadership of Terry Kalagian.

Terry Kalagian, an accomplished industry veteran with a proven track record of success which includes, the Peabody and multiple Emmy Award-winning series Stillwater (Apple TV+); Do, Re & Mi (Prime Video); and Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles (Netflix), has been appointed President, Global Animation, Kids & Family, based in Paris and reporting to Christophe Riandee, Vice CEO, Gaumont.

“Terry has been a brilliant executive at Gaumont for many years and we are thrilled to promote her to lead our global animation division from Paris. Her relationships to talent, broadcasters and internal teams has proven to be an invaluable asset to the company,” said Riandee. “Combined with our strategic push on animated TV shows and films, this new direction will enable Gaumont to expand its theatrical portfolio and offer compelling family entertainment to audiences on every screen, worldwide.”

In her new role, Kalagian will oversee the global operations of the Gaumont animation division, which will also maintain a U.S. presence developing and producing content. The division will report into Kalagian in Europe. Nicolas Atlan continues to oversee all scripted operations in North America, Latin America and Spain, as
President, Gaumont U.S.

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Terry for over two decades, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for her as she embarks on this new, incredibly deserving journey,” said Atlan. “While I’ll deeply miss having her as my partner here in the Los Angeles office, I’m eagerly anticipating the remarkable achievements she and her team will undoubtedly accomplish in Paris.”

Kalagian commented, “I’m thankful to Nicolas, my partner and accomplice in all things entertainment, for giving me the opportunity to join him on this amazing journey we have had together at Gaumont.  As the animation market has shifted, we must refocus to where the business is, which is international. While I’m more than sad to have to part with my scripted drama team, I’m excited about the challenge, ready to seize the opportunity and grateful to Christophe and Sidonie [Dumas, CEO] for their trust.”

Gaumont says the decision to centralize the animation division in Europe aligns with the rapidly developed marketplace trend towards the globalization of U.S. children’s and family content buyers. The world’s first film company, the nearly 130-year-old international outfit continues to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing entertainment landscape.

‘Across the Spider-Verse’ Smashes Int’l B.O. as ‘Mario’ Surpasses ‘Frozen’

It was a big weekend for animated cinema around the globe, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Columbia Pictures) built on its promising domestic theatrical preview through a three-day take of $120.5 million. The critically acclaimed and audience approved superhero adventure also enjoyed swinging success internationally, pulling in $88.1M from overseas territories for a worldwide opening of $208.6M — Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest debut ever.

The sequel exceeded projections and wound up pulling nearly three times what its groundbreaking precedent, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, did in many markets. One exception is in China, which this round led the overseas fervor with rave rating scores, including the highest ever marks for a Marvel movie on Douban at 8.9, and a weekend take of $17.3M. Rounding out the top five markets are Mexico ($11.6M), the U.K. ($11.5M), Australia ($5.3M), Brazil and France ($3.7M in each).

Across the Spider-Verse is open in 59 markets, with Japan and Korea launching the pic later this month.

The film’s multiverse of eye candy and interdimensional action also proved a huge pull for IMAX, securing Across the Spider-Verse as the format’s second biggest global animation opening ever with $20M worldwide ($6.5M international).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie [Illumination/Nintendo]

And the No. 1 animated IMAX animated opening? That would be this spring’s super smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($21.6M). Speaking of this Easter egg-littered romp through one of video game history’s most beloved franchises, the Illumination and Nintendo production released by Universal Pictures hit another milestone this weekend, hitting $1.3 billion in worldwide box office to take its place as the second-highest grossing animated film of all time.

Super Mario usurps the place previously held by Disney’s Oscar-winning fair tale favorite Frozen ($1.28B), and is closely chasing its sequel, Frozen II, which holds the top spot with $1.45B. The plumber brothers’ adventure through the pipes opened in theaters on April 5, raking in $204M in just five days, making it the biggest opening weekend of the year and second-biggest animated debut ever.

With $566M domestically and $733.9M internationally — and the only film so far this year to cross the billion dollar mark — The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently the highest grossing domestic and international performer of 2023. Featuring a star-studded cast, the pic overcame some critical and fanbase skepticism to become not only the biggest hit yet for Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions, Sing) but the most successful video game adaptation of all time.

La Cabane and Thuristar Announce New Projects, ‘Mush-Mush’ S2

The studios behind International Emmy Award-nominated hit series Mush-Mush & the Mushables — which has sold in over 150 territories — as well as the short film Luce and the Rock –an official selection of more than 150 international film festivals — La Cabane (France) and Thuristar (Belgium) have announced new collaborations in the works, ahead of the Annecy International Animation Film Market (MIFA).

The two companies, which are separate entities helmed by the same shareholders, are currently developing several new original projects for different audiences and in very different visual styles, produced in both in 2D and 3D animation.

“We choose to focus on a limited number of projects, to follow each of them very closely — on a creative level of course, but also on a technical, strategic and financial level,” said Perrine Gauthier, CEO & Producer of La Cabane. “I think Mush-Mush illustrates that this has been quite a successful strategy for us so far. The production of the second season is now almost completed, and in the meantime we’ve been developing exciting new projects, with the same high standards that have guided us from the start.”

Both La Cabane and Thuristar are focused on the development, financing and production of animated projects, while supporting the involved creative talents. Gauthier shares that the partners have  no intention to open their own animation studios, “to retain as much freedom and flexibility as possible in the choice and timing of projects,” choosing instead to collaborate with different subcontracting studios, chosen based on the specificities of each project.

Season 2 of Mush-Mush (airing through Canal+, Warner Bros Discovery EMEA, VRT, RTBF and others), which will be fully delivered by the end of 2023, is being produced using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. “Next to the artistic and technical benefits of this real-time production pipeline, there’s a positive impact on our carbon footprint as render times have been considerably reduced, while also improving the teams’ work conditions,” notes Joeri Christiaen, Founder of Thuristar and the show’s director/art director.

Mush-Mush‘s journey to the screen began when Belgian artist Elfriede de Rooster created a tiny 3D-printed mushroom figurine, which convinced Gauthier that the lovable fungus could carry a series. Strength of creative vision is likewise key to the studios’ upcoming projects:

  • For Emma Makes Waves, Gauthier initiated series development with Italian artist Giulia Iacopini after discovering her illustrations on social media, and partnered her with two French co-creators: Julien Gallet for the literary bible and Camille Chao for the graphic bible.
  • For the new family television special A Lamb’s Stew, Christiaen  serves as in-house writer/director at the helm, in collaboration with Claire Paoletti as writing consultant.
  • The worldwide festival success of the short film Luce and the Rock and the studios’ collaboration with Belgian artist Britt Raes, were the starting point for the new preschool series, Luce in the Lovely Land, which will be pitched at Cartoon Forum 2023.

“Our day-to-day, attentive presence throughout the life of each of our projects also has benefits on a human level, and I think this has greatly contributed to forging strong, long-lasting relationships with authors and teams in general,” Gauthier concludes.

Miyazaki’s ‘How Do You Live’ Will Remain a Mystery Until Release, Says Suzuki

In a recent interview with Japanese magazine Bungei Shunji, Studio Ghibli co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki confirmed that Hayao Miyazaki’s highly anticipated feature film How Do You Live? will not receive the deluge of trailers, sneak peeks, cast and music announcements that have become the expected course of movie marketing. Due to open in Japan on July 14 and reportedly Miyazaki’s final film, so far all fans have seen from the novel adaptation is one stark poster featuring a rather mysterious character in a bird mask.

“As part of company operations, over the years Ghibli has wanted people to come see the movies we’ve made. So we’ve thought about that and done a lot of different things for that purpose — but this time we were like, ‘Eh, we don’t need to do that,’” Suzuki explained.

“… There’s an American movie — ah, I almost said the title out loud! — coming out this summer around the same time. They’ve made three trailers for it, and released them one at a time. If you watch all three, you know everything that’s going to happen in that movie. So how do moviegoers feel about that? There must be people, who, after watching all the trailers, don’t want to actually go see the movie. So, I wanted to do the opposite of that.”

What we do know is that How Do You Live? is, according to Ghibli, “a grand fantasy” based on the 1937 book by Yoshino Genzaburo . The story centers on a teenage boy’s experiences growing up after the loss of his father, as his beloved uncle keeps a diary of their talks about emotional challenges, life, relationships and the world.

Suzuki told the magazine that it was his longtime colleague and global animation legend Miyazaki’s reaction to the enigmatic first poster that sealed the minimalist marketing strategy: “I’ve been involved with our movies since Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), but this was the first time Hayao Miyazaki genuinely praised me. ‘Suzuki-san, this is amazing. This is the best poster you’ve ever made,’ he said. I felt like that was a hint, so I decided ‘Let’s go with just this one poster for the marketing.’ So, no trailers or TV commercials at all … No newspaper ads either. Deep down, I think this is what moviegoers latently desire.”

Pixar Lays Off 75 Employees in First Major Job Cut in 10 Years

Reuters is reporting that Pixar has laid off 75 employees in what is described as the studio’s first major job cut at the studio in a decade. Among those affected by the move were Lightyear director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman. Both were longtime employees at the studio. In addition to Lightyear, MacLane was part of the creative teams behind the last three Toy Story movies and co-directed Finding Dory, while Susman began her career at the studio as a lighting supervisor on Toy Story, and was associate producer on Ratatouille and producer on Toy Story 4.

Michael Agulnek, the studio’s VP of worldwide publicity since 2015, was also among the employees who were laid off.

The Pixar layoffs are described as part of Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger’s plans to eliminate 7,000 jobs and cut $5.5 billion in expenses. The restructuring combined the film and television groups into a single Disney Entertainment unit and eliminated a division charged with distribution. Making only $226.7 million in worldwide ticket sales (and scoring only 74% on rottentomatoes.com), the studio’s 2022 release Lightyear proved to be disappointment for the studio. The studio included a lesbian major character, which became an issue in some Middle Eastern and Asian countries which have laws against LGBTQ+ visibility.

Pixar’s June 2022 release “Lightyear” was directed by Angus MacLane and produced by Galyn Susman.

Pixar’s last round of layoffs happened in 2013, after the studio delayed the release of The Good Dinosaur for two years and eliminated 30 positions. Disney acquired Pixar in 2006. The studio’s next big release is director Peter Sohn’s Elemental, which will open nationwide on June 16th.

WIA, GLAAD Join Forces for 7th WIA World Summit in Annecy

Today, at the beginning of Pride month, WIA — the advocacy organization dedicated to advancing people of underrepresented gender identities, including women and gender non-conforming people in the fields of animation, VFX and gaming — announced they are joining forces with GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization, to bring this year’s WIA World Summit to the Annecy International Animation Festival and Mifa 2023.

Taking place Monday, June 12 at the Imperial Palace Hotel, the day-long event will welcome special guests including ND Stevenson, Vicky Jenson, Ramsey Naito, Anna Ginsburg and Nora Twomey.

“WIA is proud to collaborate with GLAAD in service of our shared vision of gender justice in animation,” said Marge Dean, WIA President. “We look forward to gathering so many key thought leaders to discuss this year’s theme, ‘Break the Box: Redefining Gender and Leadership.’ The day will be filled with thought-provoking, robust discussions on the complexity of gender, including all the amazing things that can happen in our industry when people break free from stereotypes and societal expectations.”

“I’m so excited to be joining WIA for a day full of impactful conversations on gender and storytelling,” said Megan Townsend, GLAAD’s Senior Director of Entertainment Research and Analysis. “As we see an increase in anti-LGBTQ bills here in the U.S., authentic and inclusive storytelling is more impactful than ever in both combatting disinformation and uplifting our voices. The inclusive animated films and series highlighted at Annecy and through WIA’s work will be seen by audiences of all ages across the world and can spark conversations that accelerate acceptance for families of all kinds.”

“Breaking the gender boxes we’ve all been put into at some point in our lives is critical to moving toward gender justice and equity,”  Julie Ann Crommett, WIA Secretary/DEI Chair and Founder and CEO, Collective Moxie, said. “We must collectively, across gender identities, question how we define a ‘good leader’ or ‘who can do what job in animation’ or ‘how we express ourselves,’ so we can achieve true equity and a better, more prosperous industry for all.”

“With the entire Annecy team, we are happy and honored to host the WIA World Summit. Once again, the program for this day will be an opportunity to share ideas around the concerns of our time to build a better world and a better industry,” CITIA CEO Mickaël Marin said. “This year, we are doubling our forces since the World Summit will resonate particularly with the theme of Annecy 2023: Animation Pride & Diversity.

The WIA World Summit will feature a day-long symposium of panels and focused conversations spotlighting key thought leaders filmmakers and executives from around the world discussing gender justice — a system of equity and fairness for people of all genders, gender identities and presentations. As with every summit since the beginning, this year’s event will be live-streamed and available to the general public via the WIA website from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. CEST/12:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. PST, with a lunch break from 12:20-2:30 p.m. CEST. The Summit will also be recorded and posted subsequently on the WIA website.

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Sticks Landing with 2nd-Best Animated Preview Ever

Following a spate of glowing reviews across the trades this week, Sony Pictures Animation can toast a heroic theatrical debut for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Highly praised by critics and eagerly awaited by fans, the sequel is ready to spin  a strong web around box offices this weekend, with the studio reporting a $17.35 million Thursday preview night take.

This impressive figure sets Across the Spider-Verse up as the second best preview night performer for an animated feature, just behind Disney-Pixar’s Incredibles 2 — which previewed at $18.5M and went on to earn $1.24 billion worldwide — and bumping Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4 to the No. 3 spot ($12M) for this particular ranking.

The original pic, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which shook up not only expectations for animated features but also superhero flicks in any medium, previewed at $3.5M in 2018, totting up a $35.3M three-day opening and a $384.3M worldwide total. This ambitious experiment went on to sweep awards season, picking up the Best Animated Feature honors from the Academy Awards, Golden Globs, Critics’ Choice Awards and Annie Awards, where it also swooped six additional Outstanding Achievement honors.

Across the Spider-Verse is playing just as well with early audiences as it did with critics, boasting a 97% audience score and 96% critics’ Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers polled by Comscore’s PostTrak Thursday night gave the pic five stars.

All in all, things look rosy for Miles Morales and co. as it looks like it will have a $40 million Friday, and a $100 million three-day total in 4,314 theaters nationwide. It remains to be seen if or how quickly this summer swinger catches up to Universal/Illumination’s spring blockbuster, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which currently ranks as the No. 1 movie of the year both domestically ($562.38M) and worldwide ($1.284B).

Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Puffin Rock’ Flock Migrates to the Big Screen!

It’s hard to believe, but it has been eight years since Irish animation powerhouse Cartoon Saloon introduced the world to Puffin Rock, a charming series about the adventures of a lovable young puffin named Oona and her little brother Baba. This month, the property spreads its wings for a big-screen adventure titled Puffin Rock and the New Friends, directed by Jeremy Purcell and co-produced by Northern Ireland’s Dog Ears. In the new adventure, the show’s birds pair up with some new island arrivals to crack the mysterious disappearance of the last little egg of the season!

“It was back in December of 2017 when I first heard that the studio might be making a Puffin Rock movie,” recalls Purcell. “But it wasn’t until July 2019 when I officially started on the production. I had a couple of months of just myself and our line producer, Caoimhe Ní Bhrádaigh, before our core team, assistant director Lorraine Lordan, art director Fran Bravo, storyboard supervisor Aidan McAteer and editor Sophie Borlée all started.”

Revisiting the Coastal Characters

Purcell, who worked on the series as well as the studio’s features Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells, says he and his team loved the series. “It has a special place in our professional hearts, but we knew starting out that we would have to make some changes — particularly to the story. We didn’t want to make just a 75-minute series episode. If we were going to keep the whole audience engaged, parents and children alike, we would have to age up the story a little.”

He says there were a lot of discussions about what makes Puffin Rock Puffin Rock. “It really helped keep the essence of the show by having some returning crew members — our assistant director Lorraine [Lordan], location designer Stefano Scapolan, and composer Einar Tönsberg (Eberg) had all worked on the series. It was a little bit like getting the team back together for one last mission, with a bunch of new team members of course.”

Jeremy Purcell

The director adds, “What I love about this adaptation is that we made a film that is true to the Puffin Rock world. It has everything you would expect — beautiful artwork, wonderful music, a great cast and, of course, Chris O’Dowd back as our narrator! But it’s also an engaging story about what makes a home. It’s worth 75 minutes of time and watching it on the cinema screen.”

Of course, the movie ran into all the usual challenges most productions faced during the COVID lockdowns. “It took longer for us to make than we intended,” notes Purcell. “We were a few months into pre-production when China went into lockdown, and the crew of the studio that we were working with were suddenly working from home. So, we started feeling the repercussions a little sooner than some other studios in Europe. But it wasn’t long before our team here in Kilkenny were in lockdown, too.”

Purcell considers his team fortunate, as they had a few months together beforehand, and they were able to keep working on the storyboard and animatic for the most part. “However, recruiting a production crew was very difficult since everyone was hiring animators at the time,” he recalls. “So, we worked as best we could with a reduced crew, and in February of this year we finished the sound mix. I’m not sure how many people in total from the different studios ended up working on the film, they were spread across five countries, but I was on it for just over three and half years.”

By the end of the second season of the show, the team had a good production rhythm in place, and they took advantage of that experience. “We didn’t want to waste all that knowledge and shorthand, and we had spent two seasons learning and refining,” says Purcell. “So, we basically replicated the TV series pipeline for the feature. We used Moho (although it was a newer version) for the animation, with Photoshop for the beautiful backgrounds, and After Effects once again for the compositing. We are very experienced in the studio with these three programs working together and new tools like meshes and automatic wind in the new Moho really helped a lot when animating a massive storm hitting the island in the movie.”

In addition to the pandemic, the team also had to deal with refining and re-working the script once they transitioned from the script to animatic stage. “Tomm Moore gave me a great piece of advice when working on the animatic: ‘Find what’s personal to you in the story.’ It made me realize that I knew Isabelle. Growing up, my family fostered children and we had many children who came to stay with us. Those who had to leave their old lives and start somewhere new, trying to make it a home. It really helped me to understand that character, and what she was going through and feeling about her situation.”

A Gentle World

So, why does the beautifully drawn world of Puffin Rock have such a universal appeal? “During the production of the movie, I would go on social media and search Puffin Rock just to remind myself what is important to the audience and what they love about it,” says Purcell. “I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose sight of it when making the movie. It might be obvious, but they loved the artwork, the lush, colorful backgrounds, the Irish accents of the characters, especially Chris as the narrator, and of course the music! That fact that the theme song is such an ear worm also gets a lot of mentions. The surprising thing I found was that audiences love that Puffin Rock was such a gentle show. It provided a sweet world they could retreat, and it’s a show that parents didn’t mind watching with their children — or even by themselves when they needed a little down time.”

He adds, “When it comes to the movie, we had the artwork, the Irish accents, Chris was back and the music is as catchy as ever, but we worked really hard on the less obvious, and wanted to create a movie the family could enjoy together as I think we have.”

Lastly, Purcell hopes the audience connects with the new character, Isabelle. “We had such a great new cast with new characters, but we also had to recast most of the series’ characters since our TV actors had grown up on us. But it also meant that we got to have Eva Whittaker, who played Maebh in Wolfwalkers, as our Isabelle, and she did a fantastic job. It’s such an emotional performance and I hope the audience connects with Isabelle. I hope they realize it will be OK when moving somewhere new — to be the new puffin, to make mistakes, to say you’re sorry and to make new friends. I think having empathy for others is the key take away of our movie.”

Wild Card will open Puffin Rock and the New Friends theatrically in Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland on July 7. WestEnd Films is the film’s sales agent.

Annecy Festival Artistic Director Marcel Jean Spills the Secrets of the 2023 Edition

Annecy Festival’s artistic director Marcel Jean has been curating exquisite collections of animated fare from all over the world for the past 10 years. We caught up with the Canadian producer, director and writer to find out more about this year’s program and how he juggles the many different demands of the job.

Marcel Jean (Photo: Annecy Festival, D. Devos)

Animation Magazine: Congrats on putting together another edition of the festival! ow long did you work on the selection and organization this year?

Marcel Jean: The selection is a long-term job that is built throughout the year, even from one year to the next. This is particularly the case for the Mexican programming that we have been thinking about since we had in mind to put this animation in the spotlight this year.

What is the number of festival staff and volunteers this year?

More than 125 people are mobilized to organize the festival and the Mifa, to which are added around 500 volunteers.

What are some of the highlights that we cannot miss this year?

You ask me to pick my favorite among my children! It’s Sophie’s Choice! It depends on every festivalgoer. However, I would say that the real “can’t misses” are in the Screening Events or in the WIP category, simply because it’s exclusive content. I mean it will be possible to see the films in selection after the festival. You can’t say that about a WIP session or a Making of session, or a Masterclass.

Theodore Ushev, director of ‘Blind Vaysha,’ is one of the celebrated filmmakers presenting a masterclass at Annecy.

Personally, I would not miss Barry Purves’ and Eric Goldberg’s masterclasses, or the WIP session with Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski about their short film The Girl who Cried Pearls. I have already mentioned the Mexican selection, but I encourage all festivalgoers to discover, through five dedicated programs in particular, these singular works that are still too little known.

Also recommended, a healthy ascent after the fondues to go to the Museum-Château to discover the exhibition devoted to the talented director of Blind Vaysha and The Physics of Sorrow, Theodore Ushev.

English puppet animation legend Barry Purves is offering a masterclass at Annecy Festival.

Which restaurants or bars are absolute musts for first time visitors of Annecy?

A visit to Chez Ingalls for lunch or dinner in the interior garden, in the Cour du Pré Carré after the last screening, at Los Primos to find Mexican artists, or Le Café des Arts where you will find many students. In the morning, I take my coffee at Regann or à La belle époque.

What gives you the biggest headaches?

My main problem is a first-world problem: the quantity and the quality of the feature films received, which forced us to make a drastic selection. Given the richness in all the categories presented, we have also taken the decision to extend the festival by one day.

What is your take on the state of animation in 2023?

The industry is still in development. Every year we receive films from more and more countries. This diversity is remarkable. Five or six years ago, it was possible to notice this diversity in the short films submissions. Now, you can see good features from a lot of different countries. For example, this year we have a Jordanian feature, Saleem, and one from Cameroon, The Sacred Cave. Adult entertainment is also gaining ground, which is an excellent news.

Visitors can catch exciting work-in-progress sessions on a variety of project, including indie shorts like Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s ‘The Girl Who Cried Pearls.’

What kind of advice do you give young animators who dream of making something to be spotlighted at the festival?

Do not restrict the field of their inspirations, do not hesitate to approach all topics and play with techniques to put them at the service of their stories. And while waiting to be ready, take advantage of the numerous and fantastic sources of inspiration available to them in Annecy, among others by participating in the Mifa Campus, dedicated to young talents. Attend film lessons, go see films in theaters!

Do you ever miss the smaller, quieter editions of the festival?

I don’t really have this nostalgia … The main difference between then and now is that in the past there was only one way to pass through the festival and, now, you have to find your own trail. You can come with a friend and the two of you will live a completely different experience. It says the variety and the complexity of our community now.

Disney Animation head Jennifer Lee will share more details about fall feature ‘Wish’

What is Annecy’s best-kept secret?

La Turbine and le Mikado! These two facilities are not so far from the center and sometimes it’s much easier to have a ticket to a film that is sold out at Bonlieu or at the Pathé. It’s easy to go there by bus, or even to walk.

What will you do when the festival is over?

Two weeks ago I bought a house in the countryside in Canada, a few minutes from the Vermont border … You will find me there this summer!

Festival-goers can catch John Musker’s cool cat in his new short, ‘I’m Hip’
