Animation Production Days Selects 50 Projects for 2025

Fifty newly developed animation projects from 17 countries have been selected for the 19th edition of Animation Production Days (APD). From May 6–8, producers and creatives will be presenting their projects to potential partners in pre-arranged one-to-one meetings in Stuttgart.

A premiere business confab for animation projects in Germany, APD is held concurrently with the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) and the FMX – Film & Media Exchange during Stuttgart Animated Week, offers a unique platform for financing, developing and presenting animation projects.

An overview of the selected projects can be found on the APD website.

Organizers point out that the mix of genres among the selection is extremely broad this year. As always, comedy and adventure projects top the list, but coming-of-age and fantasy dramas, animated documentaries, a thriller, a Western and a biopic are also being presented. More than a third of the projects deal with issues around diversity and inclusion; 20% address the protection of the environment and sustainability.

George Lowe, Voice of Space Ghost, Dies Age 67

George Lowe, who became one of the most iconic voices of the classic Adult Swim programming block by starring in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, died Sunday, March 2 at age 67. A cause of death was described as a “long illness,” and the actor, comedian and visual artist had been inactive on social media for some time. The news of his passing was confirmed by his representative.

Lowe was born on the Gulf Coast of Florida on November 10, 1957, and got his first radio job with a local station at just 15 years old. After graduation high school, he attended the Radio Engineering Institute of Sarasota as well as Pasco-Hernando Community College in his home town. Through the late 1980s and ’90s, Lowe did some voice-over work for TBS, and for sibling network Cartoon Network in the mid-90s.

While Space Ghost is associated with the birth of Adult Swim, his talk show spoof predated the mature audiences programming block by several years. The concept of Space Ghost Coast to Coast was created by Mike Lazzo (Cartoon Network’s first-ever programmer and later VP of Programming for the network) to be TBS’ first adult-targeted toon, and stemmed from brainstorming by Andy Merrill (the voice of Brak) and editor-producer Jay Edwards to come up with a rhyming title for a marathon of 1960s Space Ghost episodes.

While original voice star Gary Owens played the title character in the pilot, Lowe was cast at the new series’ official order, and Space Ghost Coast to Coast as many remember it premiered April 15, 1994. The series features the animated super hero (and his begrudging villain support crew) interviewing real life celebrities, and aired on TBS before the launch of Adult Swim in 2001. Space Ghost Coast to Coast ran for 93 episodes through to 2004, and spawned the Cartoon Planet spinoff as well as a short-form web series on GameTap and a surprise April Fool’s Day marathon with new skits in 2014.

Space Ghost was a fan-favorite character, and Lowe voiced his cameos in multiple Adult Swim series, including Cartoon Planet, Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, Perfect Hair Forever and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Lowe most recently was heard as Space Ghost in a 2024 episode of Cartoon Network/Max series Jellystone!

Lowe also voiced various recurring and one-off characters for The Brak Show, Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen (including an animated version of himself), as well as Celebrity Deathmatch, Assy McGee, Squidbillies, American Dad!, 12 oz. Mouse and Robot Chicken.

Outside his work as a voice and live actor, Lowe was a passionate collector of modern art, as well as an artist himself. He bough this first Picasso print while at college (choosing to spend the money on this art piece over a car) and amassed a collection of more than 700 pieces by the likes of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and Tom Wesselmann. He once met Rev. Howard Finster, and was inspired to seek out and collect other folk artists.

Lowe’s own works as a self-taught artist — detailed, complex abstract landscapes crafted in intricate combinations of media — are housed in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Polk Museum of Art (now the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art at Florida Southern College), Georgia Museum of Art (Athens), American Visionary Art Museum (Baltimore) and numerous private collections.

Lowe wrote in an artist’s profile for the AVAM: “Perhaps, one youngster staring at something in my collection, or at a work of mine, will be touched like I was staring at that De Heem work as a kid at The Ringling, and they, too, will become inspired to pick up a pencil and discover their own true voice.”

Space Ghost Coast to Coast is available to watch for free on AdultSwim.com, although it is set to become unavailable soon according to JustWatch. Fans can stream nine seasons on Spectrum or access eight on Apple TV. Like many animated classics, the series was purged from Max during the 2023 rebranding.

Jim Lujan’s Animated Crime Comedy ‘The Full Fungus’ Sets World Premiere with Animation+

Streaming Ink Media and celebrated independent animator Jim Lujan announce the world premiere of his boundary-pushing feature film The Full Fungus, exclusively on Animation+ on March 21 at 10 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. PST. The Full Fungus will be the first entirely original, independent animated feature film to premiere on the platform.

The Full Fungus is a feature-length animated crime comedy directed and animated by cult underground artist Jim Lujan. Lujan employs and celebrates the classic L.A. noir genre to tell the story of private eye Chino Diamond on a search for a missing piece of music by the late jazz legend Mink Fungus. True to the genre, there are plenty of plot twists and period music set against some comedic noir Los Angeles atmosphere.

Lujan previously showcased his distinct indie animation style in co-creating the feature film Revengeance with animation legend Bill Plympton, and contributing his work to Adult Swim, Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted, and numerous film festivals. Lujan also served as a principal character designer on Fox’s Bless the Harts TV series.

In addition to Lujan, who is well known for contributing original score and character voices to his own films, the film features vocal performances by many of his frequent collaborators, including character actor Charley Rossman (Superbad) as Diamond, and punk-hop artist Deacon Burns (Kounterclockwise) as Fungus.

“I’ve been working for the last 15 months to bring The Full Fungus to life,” said Lujan, “and I can’t wait to share the film with as wide an audience as possible through this exclusive premiere on Animation+.”

Animation+ is a new streaming service and studio focused on delivering bold, uncensored adult animation and comedy tailored to millennial and Gen Z audiences. The channel is currently carried free of charge on The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus and Plex, with other platforms set to carry the FAST (free ad-supported television) channel over the coming months.

Shows currently streaming on Animation+ include Cyanide and Happiness, Meat Canyon, Bridge Kids and Big Lez Official. The premiere of The Full Fungus on March 21 is a significant moment for the platform, establishing itself as the first FAST channel to premiere an original, independent feature-length animated movie.

“We love the work of Jim Lujan and jumped at the opportunity to premiere The Full Fungus and bring it into homes via our TV channel Animation+,” said Evan Weiss and John Fitzpatrick, Co-Founders of Streaming Ink Media/Animation+. “Jim is part of a community of creators and artists of all levels of experience and popularity who have been showing content primarily on social media, and we aim to provide this community with a custom-made dedicated OTT streaming destination by creators for creators and their fans.”

Animation+ Studios is actively developing and producing new content, with plans for a premium streaming service launching later in 2025.

How the ‘Night of the Zoopocalypse’ Directors Created a Kid-Friendly Horror Pic Packed with Laughs (EXCLUSIVE CLIP)

“With a lot of hard work and introspection you will find your adult self being entertained by childish things and your child self is intrigued by things too old to understand. To me, this is how you make the perfect family film.”

— Director Ricardo Curtis

From the moment a paw bursts from beneath the earth at the opening of Night of the Zoopocalypse, it’s clear where the film’s inspirations lie. The movie is an all-ages love letter to classic horror, and co-directors Ricardo Curtis (director of Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade, head of story on The Book of Life and Horton Hears a Who!) and Rodrigo Perez-Castro (director of Koati, story artist on Ferdinand, The Book of Life and Rio 2) say they aimed to make the kind of spooky, fun films they loved as kids. “We wanted to give audiences the kind of haunted house thrill ride that’s pretty rare in family films these days,” Curtis tells Animation Magazine.

Building from a concept from horror legend Clive Barker, the duo cites works such as Gremlins and Ghostbusters and even Suspiria as inspiring their approach to the film. But most of all, the directors stress that as an independent production, they wanted to try and choose their own path in an industry that can sometimes play it too safe.

Delivering Stylization on a Budget

When it comes to production challenges, Curtis doesn’t mince words. “There is not enough time to go through how difficult it is to make an independent animated feature film that must stand up against major studio films,” he says. One of the most important tasks was figuring out how the desired style worked with where they needed to cut corners for the budget. Curtis says they used the limitations to their advantage, such as in the textures of the characters. “We could have spent the money to create realistic fur sims, but we preferred to use those funds in other places that would have an impact on the story and the enjoyment of the film,” he explains. “We leaned into the graphic nature of the designs and chose textures that created a unique look that was both appealing and eliminated all the technical hassles that came with simulations.”

Despite the responsibility of keeping on budget, the directors enjoyed the freedom of their independence, which meant they could play with a wealth of off-kilter inspirations. “We were heavily inspired by rubber-hose designs from the early days of animation and our love for the Muppets,” Perez-Castro says of the film’s character design. “We were incredibly lucky to find a character designer who basically embodies those influences with his own unique personal twist — his name is Hadi Tabasi. The moment I saw his work on Instagram, I knew I had to contact him.”

Night of the Zoopocalpse [c/o Viva Pictures]
Creature Feature: When a meteorite unleashes a virus that turns zoo animals into mutant zombies, a mountain lion (David Harbour) and wolf (Gabbi Kosmidis) lead a team of animals to stop the extraterrestrial epidemic in ‘Night of the Zoopocalypse.’
Perez-Castro says that they worked closely, exchanging notes and draw-overs with the directors based in Canada and Tabasi in Turkey. “His signature style and sensibilities are all over this film,” he says. “There’s a cohesiveness in the style that was achieved thanks to our very small team of designers, which also included Edric Daguio and Anastasiia Platoshyna. Both of them were also incredibly influential in the creation of the characters.”

Tabasi’s design work can be felt throughout the film, with both Perez-Castro and Curtis pointing out that the artist often delivered his designs with an animation cycle to go with each mutant character he thought of. “They were so strange and kooky that it was impossible to ignore them,” Curtis says. The directors both come from the world of 2D animation, and so that’s where their minds went when considering the movement style, particularly for the zombie animals where “graphic poses are paramount.” Perez-Castro says that for the fluid animation they wanted, lots of hand-drawn preliminary tests were essential.

So, Tabasi’s hand-drawn tests were a godsend. “We loved them so much that not only did we use them as reference for the CG animators, but we also included them in the credits,” says Curtis. Perez-Castro adds, “Those tests served as inspiration for our animation supervisor, Nicolas Sainte-Rose, who, with his team of animators, managed to translate that 2D fluidity into CG.” He describes the drawings as being “bonkers,” a tone-setter for the rest of the staff. “We encouraged [the team] to go as wild and crazy as they could, and [they] surprised us every time with their ideas.”

But just how does the final film compare to Clive Barker’s initial concept and what, if any, adjustments were made along the way?

Night of the Zoopocalpse [c/o Viva Pictures]

Curtis says that there were many changes — from characters to motivations and set pieces. “Most changes were based on drilling into the type of film we wanted to make: a gateway genre film for families,” he says. Also important was leaving room for the story artists to play — something both directors are sympathetic to, given their backgrounds. Perez-Castro adds, “We knew how important it would be for this film to take shape not only through the written word but visually. Animation is a visual medium, and so many key story ideas were born through visual explorations.”

Along with finding the right tone and visuals, other changes were more practical. “Things like character count, number of locations and SFX,” Curtis says. “To be honest, none of these revisions were very painful because Rodrigo and I and the producers were very in line with what kind of movie we were making. A benefit of being a non-studio film was we did not have anyone above us to answer to.”

Night of the Zoopocalpse [c/o Viva Pictures]

Pandemic Parallels

Some of these changes were also thematic. “We discussed how great horror films, and particularly zombie ones, are a snapshot of the times we live in — just like Night of the Living Dead reflected 1960s themes of racial segregation, or how Dawn of the Dead dealt with consumerism,” Perez-Castro says of the developmental stage of the film. The COVID lockdowns provided that thematic base for Zoopocalypse, as “our animals in the zoo were literally divided in their own enclosures,” the director says.

This is a rather heady concept for a film to translate for an all-ages audience, especially coupled with the horror element. As Perez-Castro says, it all comes back to their visual approach. “We knew that by doing this, we’d immediately communicate a clear comedic tone that would allow us to get away with all sorts of body-horror gags. We wanted our mutant characters to not only lose limbs and body parts like zombies do but also to mix and match them for some visual gags.”

The unlikely inspirations kept coming, as Perez-Castro remembers “literally eating a gummy candy” before realizing that the same texture would be great for the mutants, allowing them a sort of gore without compromising their family-friendly rating. It all comes back to intuiting that balance, as co-director Curtis says: “With a lot of hard work and introspection, you will find your adult self being entertained by childish things and your child self is intrigued by things too old to understand. To me, this is how you make the perfect family film.”
