New ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Images Sneak Peek Mumbattan, The Vulture

In case you weren’t already sufficiently excited about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, two new images debuted by Empire magazine these weekend are sure to kick your anticipation meter up a notch.

The images offer a colorful look at the “Mumbattan” universe, home to Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India (voiced by Deadpool‘s Karan Soni) and an intense tussle between Spider-Man 2099, a.k.a. Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac) and the villainous Vulture (Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone), who sports an inventive new look for his mechanical flight suit.

The Marvel movie sequel from Sony Pictures Animation arrives in U.S. theaters on June 2.

Earlier this month, the movie’s official Twitter account dropped a fresh image of Spider-Man 2099 in action. This and the new Empire exclusives join the tantalizing first batch of visual development examples and character designs shared in the trailer drop “Afterparty” video, featuring Hailee Steinfeld (voice of Gwen Stacy) and co-writers/producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The movie’s action-packed trailer and some buzzworthy images debuted in December.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is helmed by Kemp Powers (Soul), first-time director Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos. The film reunites Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) before sending Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man catapulting across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The voice cast also features Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobie Brown/Spider Punk, Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis (Miles’s father), Luna Lauren Vélez as Rio Morales (Miles’s mother), Rachel Dratch as a school counselor, Jason Schwartzman as The Spot, Jorma Taccone as The Vulture, Shea Whigham as police captain George Stacy (Gwen’s father) and Greta Lee as Spider-Man 2099’s AI assistant, Lyla.

Bruce Campbell: ‘Evil Dead’ Animation Still in the Works

Cult film icon Bruce Campbell shared that his now retired character Ash Williams still has hopes of resurrecting in an Evil Dead animated series continuation. According to the actor, director/franchise Sam Raimi is still on board with the idea, and Campbell is eager to get back to kicking zombie butt with less physical wear and tear.

“All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it. Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world,” Campbell told Bloody Disgusting in a recent interview. “It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate. I look forward to it, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”

The notion of an animated spinoff was first hinted at during San Diego Comic-Con last year.

Campbell starred in the original, outrageous 1981 film The Evil Dead, sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness and TV series return Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018). He has also voiced Ash for games based on the films, most recently Evil Dead: The Game, as well as multiplayer horror mash-up Dead By Daylight.

Other notable live-action roles for the convention circuit favorite include his starring turn as retiree Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep, the master thief Autolycus in TV’s Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, the Maniac Cop movies and Ethan & Joel Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy, to name a few. Recently, he’s popped up in Hallmark Christmas movies.

He is no stranger to voice acting for animation and video games either, with credits including Cars 2, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Ant Bully, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, Archer, The Last Kids on Earth, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventures, El Tigre Duck Dodgers and My Life as a Teenage Robot.

Now, Campbell is anticipating the release of the franchise’s latest installment: Evil Dead Rise, written and directed by Lee Cronin and based on Raimi’s universe. Raimi and Campbell executive produced the project, with the demon-dustin’ star noting that the VFX in this April 21 release will be nothing to sneer at: “No one will ever be able to make fun of the Evil Dead special effects ever again as long as I’m alive,” he told BD. “They used to love to do that; cheese-ball effects, garden hoses spewing stuff. Well, you know what? Eat it, b******, because this is good stuff you’re about to see!”

He is also preparing to kick off his nationwide Bruce-O-Rama tour in April, which will include fan trivia and a special movie screening at each engagement.

James Gunn “Working on” More Wonder Woman Animation

Hitmaker James Gunn is hoping to give Diana Prince fans more animated superheroine action. The Co-Chairman & Co-CEO of DC Studios, appointed with Peter Safran by Warner Bros. Discovery in October, revealed in a Twitter exchange that more Wonder Woman was a key priority for him in the animation department.

Gunn clarified: “… We’re working on getting Wonder Woman into more animation. I agree that there hasn’t been enough of her in that area and [this] was one of the first things I brought up to the animation folks.”

Earlier this year, Gunn and Safran unveiled the first 10-title stage of their interconnected DC Universe film and TV plans, dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” The announced projects included an animated adaptation of 1980s Weird War Tales squad Creature Commandos. Fans will have to wait and see whether Wonder Woman lassos a new animated series or an animated feature to follow 2009’s Wonder Woman and 2013’s Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.

First introduced in DC’s All Star Comics in 1941, Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Princess Diana of Themyscira / Diana Prince) was created by Charles Moulton (psychologist William Moulton Marston) and artist Henry G. Peter, inspired by Moulton’s wife Elizabeth and their life partner Olive Byrne. Leaping out of the world of Greek mythology into the 20th century, she was early on depicted fighting Axis powers during World War II with her Lasso of Truth, indestructible bracelets, weaponized tiara and other fantastic tools created with mysterious Amazon technology.

Diana’s recent animation appearances also include last year’s theatrical features DC League of Super-Pets (voiced by Jameela Jamil), Space Jam: A New Legacy (reprised by Rosario Dawson) and Teen Titans Go! Trailer: ‘Dr. STONE New World’ Sets Sail for April 6 Crunchyroll Premiere

Crunchyroll today unfurled the masts of Dr. STONE New World and charted a course for its global premiere on the platform, and unveiled a brand-new trailer for Senku and the Kingdom of Science’s latest adventure. The highly anticipated third season premieres April 6 at 7:30 a.m. PDT on Crunchyroll, which will simulcast new episodes every Thursday from Japan.

The anime destination also confirmed that the English-language dub will start rolling out on April 20 at 12:30 p.m. PDT, with new episodes every week. Additional dubs from Crunchyroll will also include German, French, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Castilian Spanish and Italian, with launch dates to be announced at a later time.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world based on the popular manga series of the same name, written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi and serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Dr. STONE New World is directed by Shuhei Matsushita (Dr. STONE Ryusui) with animation produced by TMS Entertainment, who are known for MEGALOBOX, Fruits Basket (2019), ReLIFE and Kamisama Kiss.

Dr. STONE takes place several thousand years after a mysterious phenomenon has petrified all humanity, when one brilliant boy scientist named Senku Ishigami awakens. Facing a world of stone and the total collapse of civilization, Senku makes up his mind to use science to rebuild the world. Starting with his super strong childhood friend Taiju Oki, who awakened at the same time, they begin to rebuild 2 million years of civilization from nothing.

‘Simon’s Cat’ Plans Purrfect 15th Anniversary Celebration

The popular Simon’s Cat brand (part of Banijay UK) announces it is celebrating its 15th birthday! In conjunction with Banijay Brands, the commercial arm of content powerhouse Banijay, a raft of special content and products will roll out for fans of the fur-midable feline.

Simon’s Cat was introduced to the world in March 2008, when illustrator Simon Tofield uploaded his first ever video to\ YouTube — a self-taught animation project inspired by his beloved cat, Hugh. 95th Academy Awards: ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio;’ ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ Win Animation Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented the 95th Academy Awards (oscars.org) on Sunday, March 12, broadcasting live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the evening revealed the eagerly anticipated winner announcements for the Best Animated Feature, Best Animated Short and Best Visual Effects categories.

The night got off to a strong start for animated cinema, as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio added the coveted statuette to its list of many accolades this award season. The stop-motion adaptation of Collodi’s classic also won the feature animation category at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Annie Awards (one of five category wins) as well as honors from critics associations and film craft guilds.

The Netflix/ShadowMachine/The Jim Henson Co. pic is the first break in the Disney-Pixar Oscar streak since Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won at the 91st awards. It is also only the second stop-motion film to win, joining Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and one of just three films not primarily crafted in 3D CG (with Were-Rabbit and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away) to win since the category was first awarded in 2002.

Accepting the award on stage, Mark Gustafson gave thanks to the stop-motion animation crew at ShadowMachine’s Portland, Oregon studio, noting that “stop motion is alive and well.” Stepping to the mic, Guillermo del Toro echoed the rallying cry, “Animation is cinema,” adding, “Animation is not a genre, and animation is ready to be taken to the next step. We are all ready for it. Please help us — keep animation in the conversation.”

The win marks the first Best Animated Feature Oscar for Netflix, which also had The Sea Beast in the running this year. The studio was nominated last year for The Mitchells vs. the Machines (Sony Pictures Animation), in 2021 for Glen Keane’s Over the Moon and Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon, and in 2020 for Sergio Pablos’ Klaus.

Del Toro, who directed Pinocchio with Gustafson and wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale, is now a three-time Academy Award winner. The Academy awarded Best Animated Short Film to author-director Charlie Mackesy and producer Matthew Freud for The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, based on Mackesy’s best-selling illustrated book of the same name. The short about four unlikely friends uncovering the meaning of kindness, courage and hope was produced by Apple Studios, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Mackesy’s NoneMore Productions and released by Apple TV+ in the U.S.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse had already won the BAFTA for Best British Short Animation and four Annie Awards, including Best Animated Special Production and Outstanding Achievement for Directing (TV/Broadcast). Unsurprisingly, the Visual Effects Oscar was awarded to Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s much buzzed-about super-blockbuster sequel. The winners were Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett. The film was also nominated for Best Production Design, Best Sound and Best Picture.

This epic about the shore-dwelling Na’vi of Pandora was the highest-grossing film of 2022 with $2.294 billion worldwide (third highest-grossing film of all time) and also garnered critical acclaim, being named to the Top 10 Films of 2022 by the American Film Institute. Avatar: TWoW won nine VES Awards from the Visual Effects Society, the Annie Awards for Animated Effects and Character Animation in a Live-Action Production, as well as VFX honors from the BAFTAs, Critics Choice and HCAs, among its many accolades.

 

Animation was also a key part of this year’s In Memoriam segment during the Oscars ceremony. Included on the roster of cinema history makers who have passed in the last year were Disney Legend Burny Mattinson, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer producer Jules Bass, Oscar-winning animation director Ralph Eggleston (Pixar’s For the Birds), actor and voice actor Gilbert Gottfried, Israeli indie filmmaker Gil Alkabetz, prolific Hollywood animator Carl A. Lin Tam Takes Us Behind the Scenes of Her New Animated Short ‘Friendship’

Inspired by her real-life experiences, Lin Tam’s animated short Friendship celebrates the beauty of a lasting human connection. We recently caught up with young filmmaker to find out more about her project, which has won several awards and has made the round of indie animation festivals around the world over the past year. Here is what she told us:

 

Animation Magazine: Can you tell us a bit about your background and interest in animation?

Lin Tam: My background is a combination of entertainment and technology. I’ve always loved the convergence of using technology and entertainment to tell heartfelt stories. A majority of my career has been bridging these two worlds to push the envelope in storytelling. From mobile gaming to AR/VR projects, I always found myself at this intersection in discovering new ways of emotional storytelling that impacts the audience. During this exploration, I saw firsthand how animation was the glue that took creative stories to a whole new level.

Animation has a way of disarming adults to being kids again, it brings joy to kids, and gives us a sense of wonder in storytelling. I could build a fantasy world in animation and have chocolate fountains sprinkled with candy in the sky that the audience would believe is normal since it’s part of this imaginary world. That’s what I love about animation! There are no limits to how creative you can be. The creators have the opportunity to make literally anything they want in animation to help drive the stories they tell.

When did you begin working on Friendship?

Friendship started at the height of COVID in 2020. The idea came to me when the world was on lockdown and everybody was told to have social distance from each other. I thought about how a year ago (2019) I was surrounded by loved ones and friends. And then in 2020, everyone was afraid to be near each other or have any contact whatsoever.

This got me thinking about the friends in my life; how some friends came in for a season, some for a reason and only a handful lasted the test of time. I noticed how the “test of time” between ups and downs either strengthens a bond or breaks a friendship. I realized that not all friendships are meant to last, but the ones that do are priceless … and honoring those lifelong commitments are the basis for the short film. From this seed, I started writing the outline of Friendship.

 

 

How long did it take to make?

The entire process from script to production took a little over a year to complete. It took me about three months from outline to script to write Friendship. After finishing the initial draft, I took the script out to focus groups around the world to see how the the story would resonate with others. I learned that no matter what the geography or nationality, Friendship hit an emotional note with the audience.

It was truly wonderful to hear that reading the script inspired some people to reach out to long lost friends, how rewarding it was catching up on  life landmarks and challenges. But what was most impactful to me was hearing that some people reconnected with long lost friends just in time to draw them out of loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts. That, to me, fueled the fire to make this film.

Once the final script was completed, I started exploring the various designs of the characters. I wanted the characters to have a unique and heart-warming expression. I was inspired by the cartoon styles of the 1990s such as Hey Arnold, Powerpuff Girls, Pinky and the Brain and many more.

How many people worked on it and which animation tools did you use?

The entire team for Friendship was between 10-15 people depending on what needed to be done during the entire process. We had a mixture of 2D and 3D animators for this project. We used  Toon Boom, Autodesk 3ds Max, After Effects and Photoshop.

 

What was the inspiration behind the story?

The inspiration for this short film is based on me and my childhood friend. We’re very different in ethnicities and personalities. We met in high school, went through adolescent milestones together, we grew apart and reconnected again through the twists and turns of life. To this day, regardless of geography or time, we still manage to keep in touch. And when we do reconnect, it’s as if time never passed. We pick up where we left off. That to me is a true testament of a great friendship.

 

What do you love about the final results?

I love the stylistic look of the short film, which is 2.5D animation. The characters are 2D, but the backgrounds and assets are 3D giving it a visually unique look that bridges these two animation styles. I also love the retro nostalgia feel to the short film. I wanted to create an environment that the audience would gravitate towards thinking about their childhood friends. A reminiscent down memory lane during an age of innocence where all that mattered was hanging out with your friends.

What were your biggest challenges?

Because Friendship has no dialog, the auditory emotion of the story had to be carried through music. Although it was a lofty goal for an independent short to compose live orchestrated music, I knew this was the only way to express the passion and emotion I wanted to capture in Friendship compared to pre-laid tracks.

I spent hundreds of hours watching other animated films that also relied heavily on music, and when I came across Joaquin Garcia’s reel I knew it was a match. Joaquin listened intently to my direction, working diligently from my own stitched music track of the animatic. I recall how excited I was when Joaquin brought in an electric guitarist to one of our early work sessions. I appreciated that energy and focus he carried throughout the entire project. What made this music a challenge was creating the various melodies and instruments during the transitional stages of their lives. It took many rewrites and iterations, but in the end we managed to get the stylistic feel of the music to help carry the storytelling.

 

What do you hope audiences will get from your short?

I hope this film gives viewers the joy of reminiscing and inspiring them to reconnect with friendships in their own lives; perhaps even preventing depression caused by loneliness.  Friendship’s theme is that connection and bonding are a basic human need that we all crave for regardless of geography, age or ethnicity. It’s about how one friend can truly make an impact in your life.

What are you working on next?

I am working on a demo pilot to pitch Friendship as a TV animated series. I believe there are so many stories to be told between the characters and their friends during their self-discovery in school and in life. I would love for a network/streamer to take on this project, given the interest we’d had from film festival audiences. We need more inclusive stories told by female creators that speak to unrepresented communities that are rarely seen in animation. I am also working on another short film that will push real-time animation and AI to the next level of storytelling. We are in early stages of development for this project.

 

What was the biggest lesson you learned from the experience of making your short that you can pass on to future filmmakers?

If you have a story to tell, start the process. Don’t wait for permission to do it. Do one small thing at a time. Start with the outline, then work on the script. By taking baby steps this helps you believe it’s possible to make your short film a reality. Before you know it, you’ll attract others who want to be part of your project. I turned a lot of naysayers to believers as I continued to move forward regardless of what people thought. Soon enough, several of them wanted to be part of this project since they saw how much progress and passion I had in my film. You have to believe in your project and be your biggest cheerleader. No one else can do it for you.

Yabba Dabba Do! FOX Chisels Out ‘Bedrock’ Cast List

Hanna-Barbera’s modern Stone Age family is coming back to screens in Bedrock, a follow-up to The Flintstones that catches up with the prehistoric clan 20 years later, in an adult animated comedy setting. FOX has ordered a pilot presentation for the show, first announced in 2021, and revealed a pedigreed comedy voice cast.

In Bedrock, Fred Flintstone (voiced by Stephen Root) is staring down retirement just as his 20-something daughter Pebbles (Elizabeth Banks) sets out to establish her own career. As the times turn from the Stone Age to the more enlightened Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock are challenged by this new stage of human civilization.

Also starring are Amy Sedaris as Wilma Flintstone, Nicole Byer as Betty Rubble, Joe Lo Truglio as Barney Rubble and Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm Rubble.

The series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment. In addition to voice starring, Banks executive produces Bedrock alongside Max Handelman via Brownstone Productions, which has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, and Sam Register. Lindsay Kerns (Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) is a writer and co-executive producer, Emmy nominee Lon Zimmet (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Farzar) is a writer and executive producer.

Quirino Awards Announce Finalists for 6th Ibero-American Animation Celebration

The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards (premiosquirino.org) announced the finalists for their sixth edition today in Madrid. A total of 21 works from 10 countries will be competing in nine categories of these awards, created to promote and enhance the value of animation from the Ibero-American region, with the main sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Portugal, Argentina, and Spain top the list of countries with the most nominations with 10, nine and eight, respectively. Colombia and Uruguay have two nominations each, while Brazil, Chile and Peru have one nomination each. Five of the finalists are co-productions between countries in the Ibero-American region, including Ecuador and Mexico.

João Gonzalez’s Ice Merchants from Portugal— nominated for the 2023 Oscar for Animated Short Film — and Juan Pablo Zaramella’s Passenger from Argentina are the titles that have received the most nominations, in four categories. The short film The Garbage Man and the feature film Nayola, both from Portugal, have been nominated in three and two categories, respectively, reflecting the international momentum of Portuguese animation.

A jury made up of Andrea Fernández (art director, The Cuphead Show!, from Chile), Julio Bonet (Adult Animation Manager for Netflix, U.K.), Risa Cohen (film and video-game producer/executive producer, U.S.), Robert Jaszczurowski (producer and director, GS Animation/Grupa Smacznego, Poland) and Simón Wilches-Castro (Creative Director at Titmouse Studios, U.S., from Colombia) will be in charge of choosing the winners, which will be announced on May 13, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife.

ITV Launching Kids Streamer, CITV to Shutter in Autumn

The U.K.’s ITV announced today (Friday, March 10) the launch of a new dedicated destination for kids on ITVX — ITVX Kids — with even more content across a range of titles aimed at school-age children and preschool audiences. Launching in July 2023 and rolling out across the school summer holiday period, ITVX Kids will consolidate the network’s 6-12s content into a streaming-only offering from early Autumn 2023, when the 40-year-old CITV linear channel will go off air.

“We’re really excited to launch this dedicated destination for kids on ITVX, which will be home to a wealth of content including new series, recognizable brands and existing favorites for a range of ages, all in one child-safe area, with editorial curation to guide viewing,” said Craig Morris, Managing Editor of ITVX. “The wealth of content will be available to stream for free, with the option for parents to choose ad free viewing, through a subscription to ITVX Premium.”

The move is the latest element in ITV’s drive to push its streaming presence. The outlet cites BARB viewing data which demonstrates that while the average amount of broadcast TV minutes of kids’ TV channels watched by 4-15 year olds per week has declined by -62% since 2019, unmatched viewing (home video, SVOD/AVOD, video sharing, etc.) has risen by +30% in the same period, demonstrating the streaming first trend in kids viewing.

The ITVX Kids homepage, accessed within a child-safe profile, will offer over 100 titles (over 1,000 hours of programming) to choose from — almost double the current selection — with curated rails and collections. These will feature a wide range of titles, including brand new programs dropping monthly on the service from July 2023. New content will span many genres and subjects, including animation, comedy, gameshows, live action and sport, sourced from a broad spectrum of distributors, from small independents as well as regional U.K. suppliers.

New series will complement existing favorites such as Lloyd of the Flies, Lily’s Driftwood Bay, Claude, Mumfie, Mystery Lane and The Rubbish World of Dave Spud which will be available on ITVX Kids. Brand new episodes of The Rubbish World of Dave Spud are commissioned for broadcast in 2024 and will be premiered on ITVX.

ITVX Kids will also feature some much-loved British brands, including the animated series of Mr Bean and for younger preschool children, TeleTubbies Let’s Go, Sooty and Bob The Builder, amongst other titles.

Commissions that ITV was able to greenlight, thanks to funding from the BFI Young Audiences Content Fund which ran until 2022, will also appear on ITVX Kids. These include sustainable arts and craft series Makeaway Takeaway; HOW, highlighting amazing facts, science and historical stories in a fun, fast-paced, hands-on format; The Sound Collector, an animated series narrated by Keira Knightley, about a little boy who has a passion for sound despite being hard of hearing; and Happy The Hoglet, which helps pre-schoolers navigate those big emotional rollercoasters that comes with being young.

ITVX is prioritizing accessibility for all children who want to enjoy these programs. The service is aiming to have 100% of its available content subtitled on ITVX Kids, with about 20% of content audio described and a push for original programming in British Sign Language, such as Signpost Productions’ Mission Employable and Daremaster.

The CITV broadcast channel will close in early Autumn, once the new kids’  streaming destination has rolled out across platforms and devices. However, ITV will maintain the LittleBe preschool segment on ITVBe and will offer some children’s content in the early mornings on ITV2 from September, with strong cross promotion to ITVX.

DC Animation Updates: Amazon Picks Up ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’, WonderCon Panels, Fleischer ‘Superman’ Remasters, New ‘Doom’ Pics

Nearly seven months after being axed in the big HBO Max animation purge, Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves’ callback to the days of B:TASBatman: Caped Crusader has found a new home on Prime Video. Amazon has reportedly ordered two seasons of the show, which was announced in May 2021 and was described by the co-exec producers as a “thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

The series is produced by Warner Bros. Discovery’s Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho. No official comments have been issued, awaiting finalization of the deal.

 


 

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment returns to WonderCon 2023 in Anaheim, Calif. March 24-26 with its traditional big screen debuts of DC animated films. Both screenings will be followed by panel discussions amongst cast and filmmakers.

Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part One will premiere on Saturday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. in North 200A. The post-screening panel includes Natalie Alyn Lind (Gotham) as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince and RWBY’s long-running cast — Lindsay Jones (Camp Camp) as Ruby, Kara Eberle (RWBY: Ice Queendom) as Weiss, Arryn Zech (The Detective is Already Dead) as Blake and Barbara Dunkelman (Blood Fest) as Yang — alongside Jeannie Tirado (Soul) as Green Lantern and Tru Valentino (The Cuphead Show!) as Cyborg, producer/director Kerry Shawcross (RWBY franchise) and screenwriter Meghan Fitzmartin (Justice Society: World War II).

Warner Bros. Discovery has meticulously remastered Max Fleischer’s series of 17 animated Superman shorts from the original 35mm source elements, which will be released on the new Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943 on Digital HD ($14.99) and on Blu-ray ($33.99 U.S./$39.99 Can.) on May 16.

Superman made his debut in 1938, appearing in Action Comics #1, and the Man of Steel’s popularity grew with his subsequent radio program. Fleischer gave the world’s first Super Hero his original animated theatrical spotlight, taking the character to new heights of popularity and adding many significant aspects to his canon, including coining many of Superman’s catchphrases and attributes.

Clayton “Bud” Collyer and Joan Alexander reprised their famed The Adventures of Superman radio show roles for the Fleischer/Famous Studios animated shorts as Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively. Jackson Beck provided the voice of Perry White and the show’s primary narrator. Additional voices, many from the radio program, were provided by Jack Mercer, Grant Richards, Julian Noa, Lee Royce, Max Smith, Sam Parker and Carl Meyer.

The remastering process began with a 4K, 16-bit scan of Fleischer’s original 35mm successive exposure negative. Maintaining the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37- to-1, the highest quality raw image was then scanned and then entered into the recombine process, utilizing proprietary software to merge the successive exposure Technicolor negatives into a single RGB color image.

Discovery Home Entertainment also gave fans an opportunity to peer further into the eldritch darkness of Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham with a look at the Elseworlds-altered allies of the Caped Crusader. While Bruce Wayne, James Gordon, Harvey Dent and Dick Grayson get only slight deviations from their norm, the  movie takes liberties with Jason Todd and Cassandra Cain — reimagining them as Sanjay “Jay” Tawde and Kai Li Cain, respectively — while Barbara Gordon appears as her alter ego Oracle with a little Elseworlds twist. Oliver Queen also gets a backstory revision and 1920s-style presence.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is available to own on Digital, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-ray on March 28.

Pirouette POW-er! ‘Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes’ Hits Disney March 22

Today, Disney Junior and Hasbro’s entertainment studio, eOne, released the first-look trailer for the new kids’ animated series Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes, premiering this month. An original concept by Robert Vargas, adapted from characters created by South African talents Marc Dey and Kelly Dillon, the original action-adventure follows Kiya, a seven-year-old African girl whose passions in life are dancing and martial arts, which also become her superpowers.

Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes will premiere in the U.S. on Disney Junior on Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. EST/PST, and the first four episodes will premiere the same day on Disney+. The series provides big life lessons packaged into 11-minute episodes, easily understood by young audiences.

Final Trailer: ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Is Ready to Play!

Nintendo icon Mario gets an epic power up in the new, final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie unlocked by Universal Pictures and Illumination today. The pic opens exclusively in theaters on April 5.

The new spot takes us into the bowels of Bowser’s dungeon and offers glimpses of the world-clashing war of the Koopa and Mushroom Kingdoms. Plus, we get to see the plucky plumber and his frenemy Donkey Kong charge through a platform challenge and more beautifully rendered corners of the video game inspired world.

Synopsis:

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy; The Queen’s Gambit), Mario taps into his own power.

The star-studded cast also features Jack Black (Jumanji films) as Bowser, Seth Rogen (Neighbors franchise) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike, plus a special voice appearance by Charles Martinet, who has voiced the characters of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games for more than 30 years.

The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part).

From Nintendo and Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets), the movie is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri p.g.a. and by Nintendo’s Representative Director and Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, after more than six years of discussions and collaboration. The film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

Author-Illustrator Ian Falconer, Creator of ‘Olivia,’ Dies Age 63

Ian Falconer, the author and illustrator of the bestselling Olivia children’s book series chronicling the charming adventures of a very capable young piglet in a distinctive minimalist art style, has died at age 63. The Caldecott Honor winner succumbed to kidney failure Tuesday in the Norwalk, Connecticut village of Rowayton.

“Ian’s acerbic genius touched many different mediums and many different lives, but it should be noted that he is one of a handful of creators about whom we can say they truly changed the conversation about children’s books,” Justin Chanda, SVP Publisher of Simon & Schuster, shared in a statement. “Olivia is a character that generations will laugh, dance and dream big alongside of, and we have Ian to thank for that.”

Falconer was born August 25, 1959 in Ridgefield, Conn. After graduating from the historic Cambridge School of Weston, he studied art history at New York University, furthering his arts education at the Parsons School of Design and Otis Art Institute.

Before introducing the world to Olivia, Falconer was known for his 30 cuttingly clever, and sometimes quite sweet, cover illustrations for The New Yorker, which he began creating in 1996. This work is what brought the artist to the attention of Simon & Schuster children’s book publisher Anne Schwartz. She told NPR in an interview that she knew right away Olivia was a standout.

“One thing that was very special about it is the whole book was in red and black and picture books at that time were full color. To see something so stark and graphically striking was unusual,” said Schwartz. “There was also this amazing character of Olivia that just really jumped off the pages. In every single picture, I knew that kids would be able to connect with her.”

Falconer created he story in 1996 as a Christmas gift for his then three-year-old niece, also named Olivia. The first book was published in 2000, winning numerous awards including the Caldecott Honor and enjoying more than a year on the New York Times Bestseller List. The book has sold 10 million copies. Falconer continued Olivia’s adventures through seven more books through 2017’s Olivia the Spy.

In 2009, Olivia set out to conquer kids’ TV with a 3D CG series produced for Nickelodeon by Silver Lining Productions and Chorion, with animation by Brown Bag Films. Created by Ricki Lake and Emily Gray, the series ran for 40 episodes on Nick Jr. from 2009 to 2015, and earned a Parents’ Choice Award. A further series of books not created by Falconer were spun off from the show. The series is currently owned by DreamWorks Classics.

In addition to his illustration work, Falconer became involved in theater design over the course of a productive relationship with artist David Hockney in the 1990s. The duo created costumes for productions around the world. Solo, he garnered critical notice for incorporating his monochromatic cartoon style into the set design of David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries at The Atlantic Theater, and went on to design scenery, sets and costumes for New York City Ballet, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Two Dogs

In a 2004 interview with GQ, film director and fashion designer Tom Ford shared that he had once been in a relationship with Falconer, who was gay, and that the two remained friends. In 2010, he told The Telegraph that Falconer had broken up with him to date Hockney.

Falconer published a new children’s book, Two Dogs, through HarperCollins in June of last year. Inspired by his sister’s children, the story centers on two Dachshund brothers who get out of the house and into some mischief while their humans are away.

Cartoon Movie ’23: Highlights, Top Pitches & Award Winners

The 25th edition of Cartoon Movie was full of surprises and brimming with feeling, as attendees flocked enthusiastically to pitch sessions for the latest creative and compelling animated features from across Europe. Many of these stories represent contemporary concerns and social movements for both family and adult audiences.

This year’s program in Bordeaux presented 58 projects from 16 countries, with a total budget of 422.4 million euro, representing 81 hours of animation. The countries who brought the most projects are France (25 projects), Germany (eight), Spain and Italy (five), Belgium with (three), Denmark (two) and Armenia, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine with one project each.

The event welcomes 876 participants from 40 countries, including 282 registered buyers from 35 nations (18% new to the show). Organizers of Cartoon Movie revealed the In Development and In Production projects that received the most attention with the highest number of buyers attending the pitch:

A number of key trends and special spotlights kept this landmark edition of Cartoon Movie fresh.

The concern for climate change was reflected in many projects: 16% of the selected projects address a topic related to ecology, for example in Forest, Back to Tomioka, Four Souls of Coyote and Yap Yap – The Secret Forest.

This year, 21% of the projects approach the question of the kind of society we live in, and what we want for the future, tackling themes of inclusion, diversity, migration, political issues, gender and more. Such projects included Julián, The Legend of Magnus the Good, I’m Still Alive and Zako.

The importance of inspiring children and young adults with heroic women and girls on screen also remains relevant, with 17% of projects opting for a girl-powered story in projects like The Legend of Lune, Clarissa, Fiammetta and Rosa and the Stone Troll.

Each year, Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Pôle Image Magelis and Bordeaux Metropole escort a cadre of animation creators and producers at the pitch events. For 2023, seven projects are supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region: Beausoleil, Jim Queen, Chicken for Linda!, Happy End, Mars Express, The Hermit and the Bear and Alpha Two’s Dreamed Journey. Beausoleil and Mars Express are also supported by the Département Charente. Bordeaux Metropole and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region are also represented by projects from their animation studios: Betty’s Dream, Long Time a Girl: An Endless City Adventure and The Hermit and the Bear.

A full day of master classes was organized during the Coaching Program, dedicated to young talents from nine French local schools. Two projects pitched at Cartoon Springboard — Cartoon Movie’s sibling event in Madrid dedicated to young talents and graduates — were pitched at Cartoon Movie: Otis and The Precious Gift.

A delegation of 23 Ukrainian animation professionals was able to join Cartoon Movie, presenting many examples of the movies, shorts and TV series produced by Ukrainian companies. At the beginning of March, Mavka. The Forest Song — first shown at Cartoon Movie in 2017 — was released in Ukraine with great success and has already sold to 80 countries. This week, Animagrad (FILM.UA Group), the studio behind this hit, pitched its latest CG-animated feature, Roxelana.

Voted by their fellow European animation professionals attending Cartoon Movie, the winners for the Cartoon Tributes were announced Thursday at a special ceremony. The trophies of the 22nd edition went to individuals and companies from France and Netherlands, and to a co-production feature film involving studios from France, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Belgium.

No Dogs or Italians Allowed earned the Producer of the Year prize for France’s Les Films du Tambour de Soie, Vivement Lundi ! and Foliascope, Italy’s Graffiti Film, Switzerland’s Nadasdy Film, Portugal’s Ocidental Filmes and Belgium’s Lux Fugit Film. Directed by Alain Ughetto (Jasmine), this stop-motion film won both the Jury Prize at Annecy and the European Film Award for Best European Animated Film in 2022.

Dutch filmmaker and illustrator Mascha Halberstad was recognized as Director of the Year for her debut feature film, Oink, which premiered at the 2022 Berlinale as Opening Film of the Generation K+ section, and was nominated for the European Film Awards 2022. Halberstad presented her next film at Cartoon Movie, Fox and Hare Save the Forest, based on Sylvia Vanden Heede’s books.

Established in 2007, Paris-based KMBO is a film distribution company whose catalog combines auteur and commercial animated films. The Amazing Maurice, Moonbound, Just Super and The Elfkins – Baking a Difference are some of the titles distributed by the company recently. This impressive slate helped secure the outfit’s status as Distributor of the Year.

Cartoon Movie and Eurimages, the cultural fund of the Council of Europe, also announced the winner of the €20,000 Eurimages Co-Production Development Award. The award is intended to reward an artistically outstanding animation project in development, which is intended to be made as a co-production.

The winner for the 2023 edition is I’m Still Alive by Roberto Saviano. The film is a production of MAD Entertainment (Italy), Lucky Red (Italy), SIPUR (Israel) and Gapbusters (Bel­gium).

Based on his autobiographic graphic novel illustrated by Asaf Hanuka (Waltz with Bashir), I’m Still Alive tells the story of a man forced to live under police protection for over a decade. Narrated in first person in his own voice, the movie spotlights 15 years of the author’s real life, starting from his debut bestselling organized crime exposé, moving forward and backward, mixing flashbacks from his childhood and imaginary events he couldn’t help dreaming of.

The jury was composed of Simon Crowe (SC Films International, United Kingdom), Elena Kotova (Eurimages) and Pierre Mazars (Charades, France). The panel was impressed by the diversity and quality of projects under consideration, and selected the winner for its creative boldness and narrative courage.

‘Jupiter Rocks’ Tunes Up with Danielle Lindner & Dillinger Escape Plan’s Ben Weinman

Educator and children’s author Danielle Lindner, CEO of Rethinking Inc. LLC, and acclaimed musician and film composer Benjamin Weinman, co-founder of mathcore band Dillinger Escape Plan, today announced that they are in development with a vibrant new children’s 2D animated series, Jupiter Rocks! The 52 x 11′ musical comedy for upper preschool (ages four to seven) is set for delivery in Q2 2025.

Jupiter Rocks! follows the life of guitar-playing seven-year-old Penelope Sing, whose life is uprooted when her mom becomes Earth’s Planet Ambassador to Jupiter. Penelope struggles to fit into a world full of “aliens” and her new neighborhood but finds her groove after she joins the school rock band. Along with her friends both new and old who visit via the Jupiter speedy space shuttle — Penelope meets many challenges as she navigates living in a wacky new world, but uses humor, music and wit to rock and roll through it all. 

“We created Jupiter Rocks! (JR) to not only showcase diversity and inclusion but to show our children that it is often our differences that become strengths! Every episode promises an exciting adventure where our main character and her friends solve their problems with creative and musical solutions. Much like I did growing up in an educational system that often didn’t reward the more ‘Right Brain’ kids out there,” said Weinman. “Our goal is also to create programming that can be enjoyed and discussed by both children and their parents, creating an opportunity for connection that will last a lifetime.”

The colorful, comical series presents relatable characters and stories which touch on key themes such as diversity and inclusivity, collaboration and friendship. Jupiter Rocks! also cultivates musical appreciation and encourages kids to make music for themselves, with an original soundtrack of specially written songs from Weinman.

Joint creators and producers Lindner and Weinman are currently in discussion with multiple broadcasters and distributors. 

“There is a real buzz around Jupiter Rocks!, a unique new show in which the newest kid from Earth, Penelope, dazzles her new friends on Jupiter when she joins the school band. Acclaimed children’s author, parenting expert and creator Lindner wrote and stars in Miss Danielle’s Preschoolbuds, a kids’ series adapted from her book series of the same name which is available free on Prime Video. Weinman is an American musician, film composer and music manager, most notable for being the co-founder, lead guitarist and primary songwriter of Dillinger Escape Plan. He combines intricate speed with depth of feeling on his guitar, garnering admiration from guitarists worldwide, and was named one of the “100 greatest guitarists of all time” by Spin magazine. Weinman has performed with acts such as Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down and The Prodigy, and collaborated with rapper Wyclef Jean. Weinman also composed the scores for the films Alien Abduction, Red 48, The Survivalist and the upcoming film Banshee.

GFM Animation Enrolls with Uli Meyer’s ‘Molesworth’

GFM Animation has boarded animated feature comedy Molesworth to handle worldwide distribution sales, working with production studio Lupus Films and producers Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding on production financing. Based on the bestselling series of boarding school books by Geoffrey Willans and illustrated by Ronald Searle, the film will be directed by accomplished animator Uli Meyer (Space Jam, Mary Poppins Returns, Chip ‘N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers).

“Bringing to life this much-loved character, using Uli Myer’s fabulous 2D skills and great script, creates a great adventure story that we’re confident will appeal to a modern audience worldwide. We are delighted to partner with Lupus Films. It’s great to be working with a proven British animation studio,” said Sean Feeney, Head of Production for GFM Animation.

Synopsis:

Molesworth tells the story of Nigel Molesworth, a self-confident, tousle-haired public school boy with a mischievous nature and a penchant for daydreams. It is a tale of adventure, mystery and just a touch of romance (much to Molesworth’s disgust!). But mainly it’s about the high japes he gets up to with his schoolfriends from St Custards School for Boys as they go head-to-head at an Interschool Festival with the pupils from St Moderns School for Girls.

Pitched against each other there is much more at stake than a gold cup to gather dust in a trophy cabinet. St Custards’ useless headmaster has gambled away the school funds and if new funds can’t be raised, the school will close. This could mean — horror of horrors! — merging with the girls school. Luckily, Molesworth has another plan. He has discovered that there is a fabled treasure buried under the school. All he needs to do is get past the headteacher, his evil henchwoman Matron, the gangsters, and the St Custards crocodile…. Easy!

The feature is being produced by multi-award-winning studio Lupus Films (Deakins and Fielding) and Luxembourg’s Mélusine Productions (Stéphan Roelants), which has credits on acclaimed hand-drawn features Ernest and Celestine, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers and Summit of the Gods. The screenplay is written by Keiron Self and Giles New (The Canterville Ghost, A Christmas Number One). The role of Molesworth himself will be voiced by Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland).

“The Molesworth series of books were among my favorites when I was growing up. The hilarious humor and wonderful illustrations by Ronald Searle cry out to be adapted as animation,” commented Deakin. “We’ve always been great admirers of Uli Meyer’s work at Lupus Films, so when he asked us to come on board this exciting project we jumped at the chance.”

Lupus Films recently celebrated their 20th anniversary, during which time they have created high-quality entertainment for families worldwide, including The Snowman & The Snow Dog, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and the forthcoming feature adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel Kensuke’s Kingdom.
