Netflix’s ‘The Dragon Prince Season 4’ Reveals Premiere Date, Trailer, Episode Titles

0

Spreading its mighty wings next month, The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos will arrive on Netflix on November 3 as officially announced today by Wonderstorm. The streaming titan delivered the news of its return along with the episode titles for all nine chapters of Season 4.

Created by writers Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, the Emmy Award-winning fantasy series originally debuted on Netflix back in 2018 and is now hitting its mid-way point of a proposed seven-season story arc.

For this next section of the saga landing next month, the plot picks up in the magical land of Xadia two years later, as Claudia ventures deeper into the world of dark magic, while Callum, Ezran and friends race to stop her from freeing the powerful Aaravos.

Check out the new individual episodes that The Dragon Prince fans can anticipate:

  • Chapter One: Rebirthday
  • Chapter Two: Fallen Stars
  • Chapter Three: Breathtaking
  • Chapter Four: Through the Looking Glass
  • Chapter Five: The Great Gates
  • Chapter Six: The Drakewood
  • Chapter Seven: Beneath the Surface
  • Chapter Eight: Rex Igneous
  • Chapter Nine: Escape From Umber Tor

“I will say this: Wouldn’t it be great if returning an egg to a mother that lost their egg or returning the baby dragon could cause world peace?,” Ehasz told Comicbook.com last year regarding new seasons. “Wouldn’t that be great? Well, it’s a step in the right direction, but the conflicts and complications of Xadia are deep, and I think you can probably speculate about different characters who have different levels of idealism and believe that change should come quickly.”

Produced by Wonderstorm with animation from Vancouver-based Bardel Entertainment, The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos soars onto Netflix on November 3rd.

VES Adds New Award to Honor Achievements in Emerging Technologies

0
VES adds a new Emerging Technology award.

The Visual Effects Society has announced news today regarding the addition of the VES Emerging Technology Award, a new industry prize to be delivered at the annual VES Awards beginning with the next ceremony coming in February 2023. This prestigious accolade honors “the inventors of a novel and uniquely innovative tool, device, software or methodology of outstanding value to the art and science of Visual Effects, Gaming or Animation.”

The importance of this new VES award is that it recognizes individual production developers, R&D technical directors, software engineers, and creators of the technology behind the visuals. Nominees will be limited to the primary contributors to the technology and not the specific artists that utilize the technology. Also excluded are companies where the technology was developed or the managers who supported it, unless they were additional contributors. It’s an appreciation of all the unsung developers who work at the studios and facilities, side-by-side with the artists, to solve problems aimed at specific entertainment content.

Lisa Cooke

“The images that we produce are the fruit of the work of the artists, but also of the immense creativity that goes into making the innovative tools and technologies that enable them,” said Lisa Cooke, Board Chair of the VES. “The relevance and speed of technological innovation in VFX is extremely high and this award puts a spotlight on the importance of the collaboration between art and science in our industry. We are so proud to introduce this new award to honor the technologists behind the captivating images.”

Submissions have now officially opened for the 21st Annual VES Awards, and entries will be accepted through Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 11:59PM (PST).

According to the VES press release, eligibility for this Emerging Technology Award is defined by a new technology (software, hardware, workflow) that was developed over a period of time, even several years. The specific technology is approved for submission during the same year that the technology sees its first substantial and impactful use for relevant project work (visual effects, animation, games).

“This award has been long in the planning and we are extremely pleased to finally recognize and honor the first Emerging Technology Awardees at the next VES Awards ceremony,” said Chair of the VES Technology Committee Sebastian Sylwan, VES.

Bidaya Blasts Back to the Future with Sci-Fi Show, ‘The Adventures of Mansour: Age of A.I.’

0
"The Adventures of Mansour" gets a new sci-fi sequel

The Adventures of Mansour, a sci-fi cartoon phenomenon from the Middle East that’s racked up an astounding two billion YouTube hits, is returning with an all-new sequel series, The Adventures of Mansour: Age of A.I.

Funded by Mubadala Investment Company and Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), the dynamic adventure show is aimed at kids aged 6-12. This Mansour relaunch from Bidaya Media, recently announced at MIPCOM 2022, will be the first Arab cartoon first created in English and Arabic then realigned for a worldwide audience presenting topical themes of artificial intelligence, technology, climate change, and space exploration.

Mansour has captured the imaginations of young audiences and established a wide fan base across the Middle East,” said Brian Lott, Chairman of Bidaya Media and Chief Communications Officer of Mubadala. “Our upcoming seasons of the cartoon take Mansour to a new level, with the aim of encouraging children to understand issues across borders through fun and storytelling. As the first Arab cartoon to be originally produced in both English and Arabic, we have created new episodes of Mansour that build on its heritage and increase audience awareness internationally.”

Here’s the official description:

Set in the near future, in the technologically advanced Salam City, ‘The Adventures of Mansour: Age of AI’ is a sci-fi action adventure series that revolves around Mansour, a 12-year-old tech whiz, who unintentionally creates a mischievous sentient artificial intelligence known as Blink. With the support of his closest friends, Mansour must deal with all manner of pranks, challenges and dangers posed by Blink, who for his own amusement, is determined to cause as much chaos as possible for Mansour and the people of Salam City.

Award-winning creator Rashed Alharmoodi originally conceived the imaginative animated series as a tool to steer Arab children into thinking more about healthy lifestyles, cultural appreciation and towards a curiosity about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

“We are proud of our deepening partnership with Mubadala in expanding the available development opportunities for children worldwide through the relaunch of such a popular show,” noted H.E. Sana Suhail, Director General of ECA. ”Importantly, the relaunch exhibits a healthy balance that is needed in today’s world between the role of technology in our lives and the need for children to disconnect from their devices and connect with the real world. This healthy balance between the online and real worlds is at the core of this show and is key to better prepare our children for the future.”

Hollywood Commission Launches New Anonymous Survey to Measure Systemic Bias and Abuse

0
The Hollywood Commission launches a second survey to measure systemic abuse and bias.

The Hollywood Commission announced the launch of its second Entertainment Survey, which seeks to give voice to entertainment industry workers while providing the community with crucial insight surrounding the progress made in the past five years towards meaningful systemic change. The survey is now live at hollywoodentertainmentsurvey.org, and the Hollywood Commission encourages all members of the community to participate in the anonymous questionnaire.

Chaired by Anita Hill and founded by board members Kathleen Kennedy and Nina Shaw, the Hollywood Commission was formed in 2017 to bring together entertainment executives, independent experts, and advisors to take the necessary collective steps towards tackling the culture of abuse and power disparity in the industry.

The second survey, which launches today and is seeking responses from members of the community through November 27, 2022, builds on the results of that groundbreaking work. With a goal of 20,000 responses  (more than double the participation of the first survey)  the new survey will include expanded demographics to ensure representation across all communities; an added focus on employees working in the gaming sector; new questions that measure and assess whether and in what ways people experience colorism; and questions focusing on survivor support and the resources needed for victims of retaliation to get back into the industry. The results of the new Hollywood Commission survey are expected to be completed and released in early 2023.

The survey is open to entertainment workers in television and film, commercials, live theater, music, broadcast news, talent representation, public relations, corporate settings, and the gaming sector, from countries including the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, and countries throughout Asia, Oceania, and the South Pacific.

“As we seek to determine what systemic progress we have made over the past several years, the second Hollywood Commission Entertainment Survey is more important and in many ways consequential than our first,” said Hill. “With this new edition, we hope to double the participation of the first survey, which will help provide us with the insight we need as we continue to focus our efforts on our next phase of work. The key to that will be participation – we need to hear directly from all workers about their experiences. We look forward to working with our partners to encourage everyone in the industry to respond and participate, safely and anonymously.”

The first-of-its-kind survey, published in 2020, received responses from 9,630 entertainment workers, resulting in eye-opening responses, including:

  • 65% of respondents didn’t believe that a powerful individual, such as a producer or director, would be held accountable for harassing someone with less power
  • Only 28% of respondents who had experienced an incident of gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, or sexual coercion reported it to employers – because they think they won’t be believed, nothing will happen, or they’ll be retaliated against.
  • While men and women reported gender harassment (demeaning jokes or comments based on gender; sexually crude terms and insults) at similar rates (62% of men, 67% of women), females experience unwanted sexual attention (42%), sexual coercion (20%) and sexual assault (5%) approximately twice as often as males (22%, 9% and 2%, respectively).

Full reports of the 2019-20 survey is available at https://www.hollywoodcommission.org/hollywood-survey.

Lion Forge Animation and Nine PBS Team Up for Kids’ Multi-Media Literacy Program, ‘Drawn In’

0
Pictured from left to right, the local talent fueling the voices of "Drawn In" Ricco Martin (playing Tyler), Mariah Richardson (playing Lady M), Riley Adams

Supporting elementary literacy goals for children and celebrating underrepresented communities and groups, St. Louis-based Nine PBS has partnered with David Steward II’s Academy Award-winning Lion Forge Animation to create a new multi-media initiative to represent underprivileged kids of color and aid in the struggle to close the literacy gap.

Drawn In was designed to energize educational objectives for English and language arts for 6–8-year-old children via a wide range of animated video shorts, online educational puzzles and games, and both print and digital comic books. A specific Drawn In website will fortify parents and educators with resources to aid students towards bolstering their reading aptitudes.

“Nine PBS wrote the book on how Public Media engages local communities around issues that matter to them,” says Amy Shaw, President and CEO, Nine PBS. “For us to execute on the vision that our local community advisors had for the Drawn In stories and characters, it was intentional and imperative that we work with a partner like LFA who are Black and Brown in ownership and leadership. Their team is representative of our target audience, both behind the camera and in front of the camera. It’s a more genuine approach to educate, serve, and transform our community.”

The Drawn In comic-book cover.

Here’s the official initiative description:

Drawn In is a series of epic comic adventure stories following the exploits of four Midwest kids who unabashedly love comic books. Tyler, Nevaeh, Jadyn, and Grace, live and breathe comic books. In every Drawn In adventure, their real-world collides with the comic world when colorful heroes, villains, robots, and other fanciful creatures escape from the comic book’s pages––and the kids must analyze and formulate how to catch and restore them if they hope to save their city from cartoon mayhem!

As they pursue the renegade characters, the world around the kids changes dramatically: comic panels become portals, letters become loopholes, sound effects become visible, and illustrations burst to life. In each story, the kids use problem-solving and literacy skills to set their world right again.

“Our partnership with Nine PBS illustrates our commitment to driving change through public media and furthering the diversity of content in the public media landscape on a national level,”  adds David Steward II, Lay Vice Chair of America’s Public Television Stations (APTS). “Drawn In is among the first animated kids’ initiatives with African Americans as lead characters in public media. We’re motivated to ensure it will be a catalyst for many more.

“Helping others understand the unique role that public television serves in the area of education is something I personally embrace and makes our Drawn In initiative even more gratifying. While advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives, we need to start seeing heightened diversity in programming that is reflective of a diverse society. Drawn In does just that and will be a lot of fun in the process.”

Educational games, digital comics, and animated shorts will be available at drawnin.org.

Writer, director and producer Claudio Biern Boyd created characters such as Dogtanian, Willy Fog and David the Gnome.

In a 2021 interview with The Observer, Biern recalled, “I co-founded my own company – BRB International – initially to distribute cartoons such as Pink Panther, Maya the Bee, Pippi Longstocking and Vicky the Viking in Spain, but soon we decided to make our own cartoons and teamed up with an established Japanese animation studio – Nippon Animation. I went back to the books I had loved as a child, and thought about how to turn them into cartoons.”

Because the studio’s first project (Ruy, the Little Cid) was based on the 11th-century Spanish hero, he decided to adapt Alexander Dumas’ Three Musketeers into an animated show. “There was a lot of sword-fighting in the original story that we needed to soften for children, so we decided it would be more fun to use animals as the characters,” he noted. “I was living at the time with an American cocker spaniel called Sam, who was always wagging his tail. I thought: what could be better than a dog? So D’Artagnan, the fourth musteketeer, became Dogtanian. I bought two dog encyclopedias, placed them next to the Dumas book, and wrote the script.”

After Dogtanian, he went on to produce a wide range of animated shows, including titles such as David the Gnome and Around the World with Willy Fog which gained popularity all over the world. He was an early champion of environmental themes and was able to beautifully adapt classic properties for modern audiences, ensuring that they were relevant to a contemporary world. Biern was also keen on representing positive female characters in his work, ensuring that they were depicted as strong, independent individuals and not just as sidekicks for their male counterparts.

An innovative and enterprising man, Biern was constantly seeking new projects. He formed a new animation division of the company titled Screen 21 in Barcelona with his talented son Carlos Biern, and together, they  created many innovative CG-animated shows and video games and commercials in the years that followed. He went on chair his companies BRB Internacional and Apolo Flms.

“As a producer of cartoons, nobody knows my face, unlike if I was a big Hollywood producer,” Biern told The Observer. “But when I give my name to make a restaurant reservation, or buy an airline ticket, or even when I was talking to the distributors in England for the new animated Dogtanian film – everyone starts singing the Dogtanian theme song at me. The same happens in Portugal, in France, in Italy. It’s unbelievable!”

From top: Dogtanian, David the Gnome, Willy Fog and Gladiator Academy.

Throughout his illustrious career, Biern received more than 40 awards, including Cartoon Forum’s Tribute of Honor Award in 2007, the President Macià Work Medal from the Generalitat de Catalunya  in 2011, the Biznaga de Oro at the Malaga Film Festival in 2012, the Extraordinary Talent Award from the Spanish Television Academy in 2017, and the Bronze Medal at the New York Int. Film and TV Festival for creating Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds,

Our condolences go out to Biern’s family and friends, especially his son Carlos (director of content and distribution at DePlaneta Kids & Family and former president of DIBOOS, the Spanish Federation of Animation and VFX Producers), who has been a great friend of this magazine for many years.

Sony Pictures Animation and The Black List Pick Frederick Leach to Kick Off New Writers Program

0
Sony Pictures Animation and The Black List choose Fredrick Leach as Inaugural Writers Program Fellow.

The Black List and Sony Pictures Animation have selected Fredrick Leach as their first-ever Writers Program Fellow, per Deadline. Leach has the distinction of being the program’s inaugural fellow and will have the six-month luxury of working as an official in-house writer for Sony Pictures Animation. While under their tutelage, the talented filmmaker will compose dialogue for custom animation segments, dip into scripts on the development schedule, pitch original ideas, and anything else he’d like to tackle.

Kristine Belson

“We are very excited to hit the ground running with Fredrick for this inaugural writers program,” said Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation. “Fredrick’s professional background, transitioning from teaching into screenwriting, gives him a perspective that is evident in his work, and his sensibilities and attitude make him a great fit for Sony Pictures Animation. We are grateful to our partners at The Black List for their efforts in helping us identify such a strong candidate for our program.”

The Sony Pictures Animation x Black List Writers Program’s genesis came in April of 2022. Its mission statement was to seek out and cultivate writers who align with Sony Pictures Animation’s multi-cultural international audience.

Texas native Fredrick Leach migrated to Los Angeles in 2015 following a three-year job teaching eighth-grade history via Teach For America. He broke into the entertainment business writing, directing, and editing for the web platform Black&SexyTV. Leach also wrote and directed the 2019 feature Caged Birds which screened at 2021’s Pan African Film Festival where it was awarded the jury prize for Best First Feature.

“What can I even say here? Results like this are why the Black List exists,” added Black List Founder Franklin Leonard. “Exceptional writer meets incredible opportunity, and the rest is history we’ll all hopefully get to watch quite soon. Congratulations to Fredrick, obviously, for being chosen, and congrats too to the entire Sony Pictures Animation team for selecting him to join their ranks.”

Titans of Tech Gather in Dublin for a Pint in Satirical Animated Movie, ‘Silicon Docks’

0
Irish director Graham Jones' new film "Silicon Docks" is available to view on YouTube for free.

What happens when ten global internet and Big Tech moguls simply want to take a relaxing stroll to tip back a pint or two of Guinness following a rough work day in Ireland? The amusing answer can be discovered in a new free-to-watch animated film titled Silicon Docks.

Written and directed by Graham Jones and animated by his wife, Kasia Wiśniewska, with live-action segments blended with resonating hand-drawn personalities, the movie’s satirical story unfolds during the final days of Trump’s presidency when a Dublin pub crawl containing a gaggle of iconic figures in the social media and technology realm gather outside their Silicon Docks offices due to the ongoing pandemic.

Graham Jones clever film takes place during the dying days of Trump’s presidency and follows a doomed Dublin pub crawl conducted by a group of American tech moguls.

“What I like about this movie is that it actually takes place inside a YouTube video,” Jones tells Animation Magazine. “Our ten characters are kind of swimming around in a fishbowl! We wonder, can they see the world outside? That basic conceit allowed us to play around quite a lot.

Director Graham Jones

“It felt really important to subject these internet titans to precisely the kind of reduction or simplification or puppetry that is all too common online nowadays. When we interact online, we often become sort of removed and distant and even behave quite differently in some respects. Let’s face it — a virtual interaction is slightly less human. It felt like a valid theme to explore using the incredible medium of animation, precisely because modern society is starting to feel strangely animated. Obviously, that’s what Zuckerberg wants…”

Silicon Docks

It’s a sarcastic animated gem that gently pokes fun at corporate tech billionaires and their obvious social awkwardness in a way that harkens back to the creative hilarity seen in vintage Monty Python animated skits. From Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, to Sergey Brin and Mark Zuckerberg, none of these highly-publicized movers and shakers of the industry escape the hilarious lampooning and exposing of their fragile human foibles and petty personal rivalries.

“The appeal to me — as a traditional and digital artist — was being able to create the characters with such precision in Procreate and then invite them all to party in Moho,” adds Wiśniewska in an exclusive comment. “That combination was very satisfying!”

Silicon Docks spotlights the impressive ensemble vocal work of Grace Power, Shane Lynch, Brendan McDonald, Fiona Bawn-Thompson, Bobby Calloway, Rob Smith, José Naghmar, Gerry Cannon and Matthew McMahon.

According to Jones, Silicon Docks was created as a passion project on a shoestring budget, mostly to keep their sanity during the 2020 lockdowns and sees this endeavor as one giant social media science experiment. Clocking in at just 83-minutes long, Silicon Docks was released on October 1, 2022 and can be watched entirely free-of-charge on YouTube.

Method Animation and Palomar Unite Swords for New ‘Three Musketeers’ CG series

0
ZDF, France TV and RAI have already ordered "The Three Musketeers."

It’s all for one, and one for all with a new creative project reuniting Method Animation (Mediawan Kids & Family) and Italy-based Palomar, a Mediawan Group company, after their successful 2019 partnership in producing The Enchanted Village of Pinocchio animated series.

Their latest venture is a fresh kids’ version of Alexandre Dumas’ rousing 1844 novel, The 3 Musketeers, for a 52-episode, 11-minute CGI animated series destined to appeal to children aged 5 to 8 years old. One interesting element of this swashbuckling adaptation will be the introduction of girl Musketeers, particularly a gallant character named Charlotte d’Artagnan.

“Following the positive experience of co-producing Palomar’s first animated show — The Enchanted Village of Pinocchio, an adaptation of Italy’s most beloved character — we are excited to reaffirm the partnership with Method Animation on a fresh reboot of a further worldwide masterpiece, The Three Musketeers,” says Palomar’s CEO Nicola Serra. “We are proud of the renewed confidence over this new project by all broadcasters involved and we can’t wait to show the Musketeers as never seen before: female, disguised, but above all… kids.”

Method Animation and Palomar are joined by longtime production associates, ZDF, RAI and France Télévisions, who will each air this female-centric angle on the French source material in their respective marketing territories. The Three Musketeers will be distributed worldwide by Mediawan Kids & Family.

“We are delighted to join forces once again with our historical partners, three major public broadcasters and Palomar, to introduce The Three Musketeers to a new generation of kids,” adds Julien Borde, Director of the Television Division of Mediawan Kids & Family. “Reinventing classic properties, with the ambition to show masterpieces to new generations, is at the core of Method Animation’s DNA. This unique take of Alexandre Dumas’ masterpiece, with for the first time girl Musketeers, will offer girls and boys new models of representation far from stereotypes.”
