Butch Hartman — the creator of some of the most successful animated children’s series in Nickelodeon history, including The Fairly OddParents (which ranks as Nickelodeon’s third longest running animated series), Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Bunsen Is a Beast —and his wife Julieann have set out to produce a brand new animated show: The Garden.
The 2D series presents biblical lessons for children ages 3-8, told through the adventures of Lenny the Lion and Lucy the Lamb, who live in a magical garden.
“We all know how much VeggieTales impacted the lives of millions of children. We’d like to follow in their footsteps and do the same thing with The Garden,” Hartman explained. “Our goal is to make the truth of the Bible easier to understand. The Garden will provide a fun way for kids to comprehend the Gospel and who Jesus is through stories and songs.”
As in previous Hartman projects, The Garden will include original songs. The Fairly OddParents was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music & Lyrics in 2002 for “I Wish Every Day Could Be Christmas,” co-written by Hartman. That series snagged two more nominations in the category the next year, for the original songs also co-written by Hartman “What Girls Love” and “It’s Great to Be A Guy,” and again in 2004 for “Wish Come True!”
“Songs make memorization so much easier,” Hartman noted. “As a kid, I could remember Beatles songs but couldn’t remember my times tables! We want kids to memorize scripture more than pop tunes. Providing kids with amazing songs to sing is one of our goals to help them learn the Bible.”
The Hartmans have already planned at least two seasons of episodes and are in negotiations to secure the right strategic partner and platform to launch by the third quarter, 2022. “These episodes will be seeds we plant in the hearts of kids,” said Julieann Hartman. “Ultimately, we want to partner with parents to help teach their kids about the love of Jesus.”
Butch Hartman’s further plans for the property include creating a VBS curriculum for churches and illustrating a children’s bible for Harper/Collins, entitled The Garden Children’s Bible, which stars the characters from The Garden and is due out in 2023.
What happens when the ‘first’ woman on Earth meets the ‘first-first’ woman on Earth? Audiences will soon find out when the new animated short Lilith & Eve celebrates its World Premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in New York (June 8-19, tribecafilm.com).
Created by director Sam de Ceccatty and producer Manon Ardisson, Lilith & Eve features the voicesof BAFTA winner Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) andd Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes) in the title roles. The satirical adult comedy will screen June 12 in the “Animated Shorts Curated by Whoopi G” program.
The film is set in Eden: a lush, safe haven where all living creatures can fornicate peacefully, home to Adam and Eve, the first man and woman on Earth. Or so Eve thinks, until one day she is surprised by an unabashed stranger who introduces herself as Lilith, first woman on Earth. Eve’s initial confusion only worsens when Adam admits that Lilith is indeed his first wife, but insists she is a demon and as such doesn’t count.
Lilith, bored with the couple’s bickering, grabs the apples she’d come for and leaves, but Eve’s mind is too fully blown to let it slide. Defying Adam for the first time, Eve runs after Lilith for answers. What she will learn will rock the very foundation of everything Eve knows about the world — and about herself.
“Lilith & Eve is a project born with my first daughter,” says de Ceccatty. “My life partner Manon and I grew up in respectively Catholic and Jewish households, but we spent much of our adult lives unlearning what religion had taught us. In particular, we’ve always resented the story of Adam and Eve, which defines women as man’s suitable helper (Genesis 2:24). So when we first heard of Lilith, Adam’s first wife and equal, nicknamed ‘mother of all demons’ for refusing to submit to Adam, we were destined to fall in love. After naming our first daughter after her, we decided to set the record straight and tell Lilith’s story as we saw it: the story of a biblically badass woman, who took control of her own destiny.”
The filmmakers set out to reclaim one of western culture’s founding stories in a way that is empowering to women, while promoting their independence and friendship. In addition to Wood as Eve and Wokoma as Lilith, this passion project features the voices of Conor Kennedy as Adam and trans actor & activist Jake Graf as the Archangel Samael. The score was composed by Sundance Lab alumna Camilla Uboldi.
Sam de Ceccatty is a French-American writer and director whose shorts screened in Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying festivals worldwide. As a writer, de Ceccatty won the BBC Comedy Writers Room with his preapocalyptic sitcom What If, and was a finalist of the ITV/Red Planet Prize with his comedy crime Black Cows Give White Milk. He was also featured on the 2017 BBC Talent Hot List.
De Ceccatty wrote Lilith & Eve, his debut animated project, with his life partner and producer Manon Ardisson, who was BAFTA-nominated for the BFI-backed, BIFA-winning feature film God’s Own Country (Sundance 2017, winner of the World Cinema Directing Award). Ardisson is the managing director of Ardimages UK (recipient of a 2020 BFI Vision Award).
Together, de Ceccatty and Ardisson are now developing an animated series based on Lilith & Eve.
Tribeca’s Animated Shorts program (78 min.), curated by Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg, will also present the world premiere of Peter Sluszka’s Hardboiled, produced at New York studio Hornet; Canadian-Tahitian co-pro Tehura by Wei Li (world premiere); More Than I Remember by American filmmaker/artist Amy Bench; Pixar veteran Bret Parker’s child’s-eye view of gender identity, Pete(world premiere); and The Originals, a memoir of South Brooklyn childhood from award-winning director Cristina Costantini and first-timer Alfie Koetter.

Moonbug Entertainment, a Candle Media company, today announced the acquisition of One Animation, a Singapore-based media company and production studio. The company is best known for creating and producing the hugely popular, three-time Emmy nominated series Oddbods.
Moonbug will look to expand Oddbods’ global distribution footprint and grow the brand into new formats, products and experiences.

Following the massive global success of PAW Patrol: The Movie, Spin Master Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies today revealed the first new star voice talent being added to the cast of the upcoming PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
Preschoolers favorite team of pups will return to the big screen with Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actor Taraji P. Henson (Minions: The Rise of Gru, Hidden Figures,Empire) lending her voice to the film, slated for exclusive theatrical release on October 13, 2023.
“I am so excited to be a part of the next PAW Patrol theatrical adventure,” said Henson. “While I don’t want to give too much away, my character in the film throws the pups some new challenges that they must unite to overcome. I think the film has a powerful message for kids that no matter how small they might be, they can still make a difference in their community.”
The studio is currently working with returning voice talent from the first film and additional new cast members, all of which will be announced shortly.
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie synopsis: When a magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, it gives the PAW Patrol pups superpowers, transforming them into The MIGHTY PUPS! For Skye, the smallest member of the team, her new powers are a dream come true. But things take a turn for the worse when the pups’ archrival Humdinger breaks out of jail and teams up with Victoria Vance, a meteor-obsessed mad scientist, to steal the superpowers and turn themselves into supervillains. With the fate of Adventure City hanging in the balance, the Mighty Pups have to stop the supervillains before it’s too late, and Skye will need to learn that even the smallest pup can make the biggest difference.
Last year, pup domination ensued when the preschool powerhouse franchise’s first feature film premiered in theatres in August 2021, opening in the number one spot in more than 25 countries and amassing over $150 million worldwide at the box office. With a simultaneous day and date release on Paramount+ in the U.S., the film broke records quickly becoming the number one most streamed movie on the platform, holding steady today where it is watched an average of 3+ times.
The follow-up feature will see veteran animation director Cal Brunker (PAW Patrol: The Movie, The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature) return to direct the film while also reuniting with writing partner, Bob Barlen (PAW Patrol: The Movie, Bigfoot Family), who will take on the role of associate producer.

SIGGRAPH 2022 announces the award winners and lineup of 25 short films, cinematics, scientific visualizations, visual effects breakdowns and more set to appear in the first hybrid edition of the Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater this August.
Highlighting the best in computer graphics storytelling, the Electronic Theater will premiere in-person at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Monday, August 8 and is available via separate ticket. Virtual access to the show will open on Tuesday, August 9.
A qualifying festival for the Academy Awards®, the SIGGRAPH 2022 Electronic Theater received over 325 submissions, which the expert jury whittled down to a lineup that spotlights work from 10 countries — including Sweden, Taiwan, France, the United States and China. In addition to juried selections, the festival will showcase a mixture of curated bonus content.

Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson is adding another animated cat to his credits list: Having wrapped up his recordings for the feline samurai Jimbo in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (out July 15), the Oscar-nominated star known for his standout roles in hits like Pulp Fiction,Jurassic Park, Coming to America, Do the Right Thing, the Star Wars prequels and, of course, Snakes on a Plane, has been tapped to voice star in Alcon’s fully animated Garfield feature.
Jackson will play a brand-new character, Garfield’s father Vic. As previously announced, the titular lazy, lasagna-loving comic-strip cat is being voiced by Chris Pratt. The film is being directed by Mark Dindal from a script by David Reynolds; the duo previously collaborated on The Emperor’s New Groove.
Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to Garfield from creator Jim Davis, who introduced funny pages readers to the wry feline in June 1978. Davis is executive producing as well as Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost, with John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner producing alongside Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.
The movie is being animated by DNEG Animation, with studio CEO Namit Malhotra and President Tom Jacomb as producers. The new Garfield movie will be distributed globally by Sony Pictures (excluding China).
Jackson, a highly prolific actor with over 150 film appearences to his name, is no stranger to animation. In addition to reprising his live-action screen roles like Marvel’s Nick Fury and Star Wars Jedi Mace Windu, his distinctive voice is recognizable as Frozone in Pixar’s Incredibles films and starring in Afro Samurai, as well as roles in Turbo, Adventures in Zambezia, The Boondocks and Astro Boy (2009). He was recognized with an Honorary Oscar at the 94th Academy Awards.

Under the Animation from Spain brand, ICEX Spain Trade & Investment will attend the Annecy International Animation Market (MIFA) from June 14-17 , the event for professionals held in parallel to the prestigious Annecy Festival. In a format that brings back full in-person attendance, this year’s MIFA will occupy almost 8,000 m2 in Annecy’s iconic Impérial Palace Hotel, which will host nearly 100 activities and conferences and more than 150 stands.

Banijay Kids and Family today announces that Zodiak Kids and Family France and South Korean studio Pingo Entertainment are co-producing a new high-quality CGI action-comedy animation series, Shasha & Milo
(26 x 22’) with broadcast partners Tencent Video (China).

Emmy-nominated Saturday Night Live performer and writer Leslie Jones (Our Flag Means Death, Ghostbusters 2016) is reportedly starring in and executive producing a new adult animated comedy at Warner Bros. Animation.
Details on the project, currently in early development, are sparse. According to Variety, Jones will be playing the lead character “Plastic,” but the project is unrelated to the adaptation of DC’s Plastic Manannounced several years ago.
No other talent has been announced, nor a broadcast/streaming outlet, but the untitled series would be at home alongside WBA’s acclaimed Harley Quinn and Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma in HBO Max’s adult animation slate.
Jones joined SNL for its 2014 season, putting her star on the rise. Having previously appeared in TV and movie titles like The League, Workaholics, The Blacklist and Trainwreck, Jones took a star turn in the Ghostbusters reboot of 2016. Since leaving SNL in 2019, she has featured in Coming 2 America, Our Flag Means Death, Death to 2020 and her own Netflix comedy special.
Jones has also provided voiceover work for animated hits Sing and The Angry Birds Movie 2 — as Zeta, the megalomaniacal eagle bent on world domination.
Paramount+ and Paramount Home Entertainment today announced that the global hit movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, from Paramount Pictures, will be available to stream on the service beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, May 24, in the U.S. and Canada. The film will also be available to rent and purchase across digital platforms from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD August 9. In addition, fans can also purchase both the new movie and original hit hybrid film in a 2-Movie Collection on Digital or Blu-ray.

In a special announcement from Cannes, details of the first annual Niigata International Animation Film Festival were revealed. Organized by the NIAFF Executive Committee, produced by film distributor/cinema operator Eurospace and anime production outfit Genco — with applications in for support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Agency for Cultural Affairs — the inaugural edition is planned for March 17-22, 2023.
With a focus on commercial animated features, NIAFF aims to create a prestige meeting place between culture and animation, showcasing movies produced for theaters, streaming platforms and even feature length works remounted from TV series on equal footing.
“VOD has changed the way we watch movies and the codes of cinema. The seventh art has become accessible and mobile. The experience of watching a film at home is different from the one in a movie theater, where time, space and reactions are shared,” commented Program Artistic Director Tadashi Sudo. “Our ambition is to honor every animated film, whether it is shown in theaters, on VOD services or on television. We refuse to rank anime by the form of its exploitation. Creativity and storytelling are at the heart of our festival.”
Animated films are now being produced all over the world; in Asia, Europe, America, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania. Each country produces works that vary greatly in style, carrying different stories and cultural values. Previously intended for children and fans, animation is becoming increasingly popular around the world. In this context, and while the major animation events tend to be centered in Europe and North America, NIAFF seeks to give animation a proper platform every year, in the heart of Asia, by creating a place for meeting, exchange and transmission that brings new perspectives to the world.
NIAFF will invite universities, studios and other organizations dedicated to animation together to organize events such as training workshops, conference on the international industry and market, and seminars. The festival will also explore new theories in the world of animation, covering topics rarely discussed on the international level and creating a space for critical thinking.
“An animated film is a fiction film, but the ways of producing and shooting are incomparable. Animation is a completely different discipline, the differences are multiple: between the acting and the drawing of the animator, between the role of the director of a fiction film and that of an animation film,” said director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Innocence, Sky Crawlers), who serves as jury president for the 1st NIAFF. “I would add that Japanese animation is a very special exercise…”
The festival organizers emphasized that animation is a representative culture of Japan, and must be valued, maintained and developed in the country. Japan has long been a hub of animation in East and Southeast Asia and must have an international animation film festival to promote creation, training of talents, circulation of works, encourage the birth of collaborations and promote animation as a whole.
As a port city on the Sea of Japan, Niigata was the largest city in Japan in the 19th century. It remains a major hub between China, Korea and Russia. Its rich nature, culture and history, as well as its proactive approach to creativity, attract many people. Many leading manga artists and animation creators were born there. Japan’s first full-color animated
feature film, Hakujaden (The White Snake) was created by Niigata natives Hiroshi Okawa and Koji Fukiya, at the Toei animation studio.
In 2012, Niigata City established the “Manga and Anime City Development Concept” to enhance the city’s appeal as a manga city, promote it nationally, support the sustainable development of manga and anime-related industries, and revitalize the city.
Furthermore, with the development of new production methods and the recent changes in lifestyle due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people working in animation production are moving outside of Tokyo and new studios are being created. Japan currently has a record number of 400 students training to become animation and manga artists at vocational schools and professional universities across the country.

In addition to Sudo, an animation journalist, and Oshii, the inaugural festival is being led by Festival Director Shinichiro Inoue (former Editor-in-Chief of Newtype), Secretary General Taro Maki (Genco producer, In This Corner of the World,Mobile Police Patlobar) and Chairman Kenzo Horikoshi (Eurospace producer, Annette, Like Someone in Love). The Executive Committee is presenting NIAFF in collaboration with Kaishi Professional University and Niigata University (TBC).
The program will comprise a feature film Competition (10-12 films), a Global Trends overview of contemporary animation from around the worlds (8-10); The Future of Animation awards for people and works that have contributed to the evolution of animation; the Manga Gaze, exploring the relationship between animation and comics; Retrospectives highlighting international artists and artistic movements; Academic Program (industry seminar & conference) and Educational Program (symposiums & workshops).
Outside the main program, attendees will be able to enjoy an Opening Ceremony, live Animation Song performances and Projection Mapping around the venue, with the motif of the animation work on offer. Special exhibitions such as “A History of Animated Clothing” are also being considered.
The NIAFF film competition will be open for submissions from November 2022, overseen by a selection committee including international critics.

Fans of Bob’s Burgers, the multi-Emmy-winning animated series that has become a mainstay of Sunday night appointment viewing over its 12-season run, have been eagerly awaiting the Belcher family’s theatrical debut since the project was first announced in 2017.
An animated, big-screen, musical comedy-mystery-adventure extravaganza, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, which arrived in theaters on May 27, has a little of everything that you might expect: a crisis brought on by a ruptured water main; a mystery that could help save the restaurant; snappy, spectacular musical numbers and a big, healthy portion of heart.
But the series that excels at exalting the mundane also has a few surprises in store for moviegoers, including gorgeous widescreen visuals presented in a mix of CinemaScope and anamorphic formats, with the animation produced at Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment.
Produced by Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard, Nora Smith and Janelle Momary, The Bob’s Burgers Movie was written by Bouchard and Smith, and directed by Bernard Derriman, with Bouchard also serving as co-director. The movie takes a deep dive into the psyches of all five Belchers, and their stalwart family friend Teddy, with the celebrated voice cast featuring Kristen Schaal, H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, Zach Galifianakis and Kevin Kline returning for their big-screen roles.
A Star Player
As supervising director on more than 150 episodes of Bob’s Burgers before he was promoted to producer after season 10, Derriman is steeped in the North Jersey Shore world of the Belchers. The Australian native began his career in animation at Disney Animation Australia in Sydney, working in television and features, and is also a consulting producer on Bouchard’s two newer series, The Great North and Central Park.
“When you meet a star player, you know it,” Bouchard says of working with Derriman. Bouchard is the creator of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, which launched in 1995 and ran for six seasons before he teamed up with Brendon Small to create the beloved but short-lived series Home Movies. “I feel that I’ve benefited in some ways from having done this job for many decades now,” he notes. “Bob’s Burgers is a little more than 10 years old, but I’ve been running shows in various forms for a lot longer than that — I’ve been working in this business since I was 24 years old. Now I really see how the work is important, but just as important is making sure that when you meet collaborators who are truly special, you ring all the alarms.”
Derriman is a problem-solver, says Bouchard, who can easily communicate complex solutions. “If we were staring at an animatic and were concerned about a shot or a motion or the clarity of a moment, he would just do a little drawing. While everyone else was scratching their heads and trying to figure it out, he would be drawing. Then, he would put the Post-it on the table, and it was so obviously the right answer. Somehow, Bernard knew. He did it again and again and again, and it was thrilling because you realize, ‘Oh, we’ve got another one. We’ve got another person who is going to make everything better.’”
Initially brought on as a story artist, Derriman wasn’t heavily involved in the project from the beginning. “Unlike Nora, who was alongside Loren from the start, I’d started from Australia working as a board artist, and then became a supervising director,” he relates. “Also, Loren focuses more on audio. It’s his thing, and that was a big part. Visual, obviously, is my bag — so we fit well together.”
All in the Details
Led by Bouchard, Derriman says the production team pays an enormous amount of attention to designing even the smallest details seen on-screen to a level he hadn’t experienced prior to Bob’s Burgers. “For instance,” he says, “if Teddy’s got a drill and he’s in the background of a scene, it’s not like a board artist just draws whatever drill that comes to mind and that’s what’s in the movie. We’ll always be digging up references, and Loren will push everyone to do that.
“If something doesn’t ring true, it’s like, ‘I’ve never seen a drill like that before.’ We’ll go into it. Every aspect of the show, we have that little extra level of reality where we try to make the props they’re using more realistic, more believable.”
Bouchard and Derriman credit art director Phil Hayes (Bob’s Burgers, The Great North), who has been on the series since the first episode, and production designer Ruben Hickman (The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Fantastic Mr. Fox) for elevating the series to a theatrical look. “Ruben is another star, another example of somebody you want to hold onto as tightly as you can,” says Bouchard. “It was like hiring Edward Hopper to work on the backgrounds for Bob’s Burgers.”
Adding light and shadows, Hickman’s early background drawings were so detailed they almost captured the look of the finished film. “Ruben’s first background was a new pass on the exterior of the school, and I still remember just being blown away when I saw it,” Derriman recounts. “I was like, ‘Holy shit.’
“They were like paintings,” he continues. “It was more about being very conscious of what time of day it was and how a cloudy day would change the look of the paint on the buildings. It was that level of detail, which we hadn’t ever done before, that really just took the look of the movie to a new level.”
Creating a Spectacle
A big part of bringing Bob’s Burgers to the big screen was creating a sense of spectacle, says Bouchard. “If you think of spectacle too simplistically and too bluntly, then everything gets overblown and it means nothing. But doing spectacle right — and I’m not saying we nailed it, although we absolutely tried — seems to be about finding dynamics within the form, the 90-minute movie that’s meant to be on the big screen with big speakers and hundreds of people in the room.”
But creating spectacle also meant creating balance, he adds. “You still need small moments, and even silence and quietness in your characters, too. That’s part of ‘spectacle.’ We were, and still are, studying how to create that feeling of an eventful story. How do you tell a story about a family that runs a restaurant — which is, by definition, a small thing? It’s designed that way. It’s a small restaurant and a small space. In the grand scheme of things, you might, I guess, say it’s small stakes, though it certainly feels big to the characters.”
The question becomes how to take all that and make it fill the screen with emotions and events so impactful audiences are pinned in their seats. “I can’t say for sure that we got there, because we haven’t seen it with an audience yet, but we certainly knew we wanted to try,” says Bouchard. “It’s what we’re interested in: How can we tell very small stories for the small screen and make them feel big, and how can we tell bigger stories for the big screen and make them feel huge?”
Room for Surprise
Bringing the Belchers into cinemas meant the filmmakers could devote more time to exploring the depths of each family member. “Because we’re a character-driven show, that means the characters have to have potential. There has to be more that these characters can do and say that they haven’t done yet, or that they haven’t done in a particular way or in a way that could surprise even us, the people who are responsible for coming up with the things that they say,” Bouchard explains.
“What was really a great pleasure about working on the movie was thinking about what the characters were expressing quietly on the series that they could express out loud and explicitly in the feature,” he adds.
Linda, in particular, held the most surprise for the filmmakers. “When we looked at Linda, we realized what a force she was in this family — what an incredible, somewhat unsung hero she was,” says Bouchard. “It was about optimism and this hope and grit that she embodies minute to minute in this family. And they’re facing real challenges.
“When Bob loses his drive, when he no longer has enough reserves of hope and strength himself — what that looks like and what that marriage looks like, and how the kids fit into that, that was something that we were really happy to dig into and find more there than perhaps we even dared to hope for.”
In the end, Bouchard says, “Each character had to hold their own in this movie. We wanted all six of them, including Teddy, to really face their worst nightmare in a way where the most important part of themselves is challenged.”
20th Century’s The Bob’s Burgers Movie opens in theaters Friday, May 27.
Amazon Studios today announced that it has ordered two seasons of The Hospital, a new sci-fi animated comedy created by Cirocco Dunlap and executive produced by Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne and Danielle Renfrew Behrens through Animal Pictures. Shauna McGarry will also executive produce. Keke Palmer, Greta Lee, Kieran Culkin, Sam Smith, Rudolph and Lyonne will voice aliens in the series with more voice cast to be announced.
Titmouse (Big Mouth, The Legend of Vox Machina, Fairfax) is handling the animation.
Announced in development in January 2020, The Hospital will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide at a yet to be announced date.
“Cirocco is a total original. Synopsis: The Hospital is a completely original concept that follows Sleech and Klak — aliens, best friends and intergalactically renowned surgeons — as they tackle anxiety-eating parasites, illegal time loops and deep-space STIs. Risking their careers to take on a remarkable case, they put existence itself in jeopardy. Although considering their dismal personal lives, oblivion might be an improvement.
“Working with Animal Pictures, Amazon Studios and Titmouse to create a show that prominently features unsexy alien sex has been one of the best experiences of my life,” said Dunlap.
Keke Palmer (Alice, Hustlers, Nope) will voice star as Dr. Klak, a brilliant, multi-eyed surgeon who spends her down time feeding her sentient plants, obsessively reviewing past failures, and watching hit show My Lover, My Clonewith her best friend Dr. Sleech.
Greta Lee(Past Lives, The Morning Show) will voice star as Dr. Sleech, a reckless, cocky surgeon whose main saving graces are her genius, her well-oiled lizard tail, and her unconditional love for her best friend Dr. Klak.
Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, DC League of Super-Pets) will voice star as Nurse Tup, a playful nihilist with chameleon flesh who thrives in the chaos of the Hospital. Nurse Tup expertly navigates every accidental apocalypse created by renegade doctors Sleech and Klak, and looks good doing it.
Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live, Big Mouth) will voice star as Dr. Vlam, a robot intern who has been alive for at least 20,000 years. She’s had every career you can think of — king, thief, stay-at-home mom of 500 — and is a true testament to hard work. All you need to succeed is roughly 850 years of free time.
Kieran Culkin(Succession) will voice star as Dr. Plowp, a surgeon, an empath and an adult experiencing puberty. He has a love-hate relationship with Sleech, constantly feels everyone’s feelings, and has four identical brothers with whom he shared an egg.
Sam Smith (singer/songwriter – Spectre, Pitch Perfect 2) will voice star as Dr. Azel, a galactically-renowned surgeon with ambiguous morals and six well-manicured feet.

Dunlap (Russian Doll, Man Seeking Woman) created The Hospital and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. McGarry (BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie) will also executive produce, along with Rudolph, Lyonne and Renfrew Behrens. Shannon Prynoski (Fairfax), Chris Prynoski (The Legend of Vox Machina), Antonio Canobbio (Arlo the Alligator Boy) and Ben Kalina (Big Mouth) will executive produce from Titmouse. Artist Robin Eisenberg, instrumental in creating the visual style of the series, will co-produce and serve as production designer.
Prior to developing The Hospital, Dunlap’s credits include Russian Doll, Baymax!, Big Mouth and Man Seeking Woman. Dunlap’s short film Everything Is Okay screened at South by Southwest in 2018.
Eisenberg is a Los Angeles-based artist who has amassed a large following online for her depictions of aliens doing relatable things. She has created art and collaborated with clients such as Vans, Adobe, Apple, Thrasher and Adult Swim.

HBO Max and Cartoon Network announced today the greelinght for the first-ever Scooby-Doo preschool series, Scooby-Doo! And the Mystery Pups. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the CGI-animated adventure comedy series finds the iconic best pals as camp counselors who lead a “paw”-some new crew on mystery-solving adventures at sleepaway camp.
The series will join the Cartoonito preschool block in 2024.

Just in time for the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas (May 24-26 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas) we caught up with Bruno Danzel d’Aumont, VP of international licensing and marketing at Paris-based animation powerhouse Cyber Group Studios. In this insightful interview, he tells us about the studio’s latest licensing campaigns and key 2022 animation tentpoles.
Animation Magazine: Can you tell us a little bit about what Cyber Group will be focusing on at the Licensing Expo in May? Bruno Denzel d’Aumont: The Licensing Expo is a global show, and since Cyber Group Studios is selling its series all over the world, it is a great opportunity to meet with our existing partners and potential future ones to share the company’s latest updates. For example, we’ve recently invested in real-time animation, a new technology that allows us to produce high-quality content using live actors at a fraction of the cost of traditional animation. Also, as part of its ongoing international expansion plan, Cyber Group Studios has acquired a majority stake in Bristol-based animation studio A Productions, the multi-award-winning Italian animation studio Graphilm Entertainment and the Singapore-based studio Scrawl Animation.
What are some of the new shows you will be bringing to the event?
At the Licensing Expo, we will, of course, continue to promote our global preschool property Gigantosaurus, with new content to come internationally. It will be a great opportunity to share our upcoming plans with our licensees, agents, and new partners. Additionally, our most recently developed shows — Digital Girl, The McFire Family, Press Start! and Final Fantasy IX — will be presented for the first time. These four new series have a strong licensing appeal for different age targets.
Where are some of the new areas of focus for the studio and how do you see these areas will evolve and grow in 2022 and beyond?
On the licensing side, Gigantosaurus will continue its expansion around the world, opening new product categories not only in 2022, but also in the coming years. The new series that we will present at the Licensing Show will also contribute to our growth in the coming years. Our recent technology developments such as real-time animation will also be an area of focus for the coming years.
What do you think are some of the most impactful trends in the world of animation and licensing? One of the biggest trends is the direct access to the consumer: not only is the content directly accessible by the consumer through the various platforms, but so are licensed products sold through the digital retail network. This trend requires extreme agility and targeted communication through products’ corresponding content towards stakeholders and consumers.
Cyber Group has been an active player in the gaming arena in recent years. Can you talk about some of your exciting initiatives?
We released our first video game in March 2020, an action-adventure game on console and PC called Gigantosaurus the Game that targeted kids and families. This game does include a cooperative multiplayer option, enabling kids to play their favorite characters with their friends or relatives. It is still selling very well across the world. It was followed in June 2021 by The Last Kids on Earthand the Staff of Doom, an action-adventure-RTS game on console and PC. On Android/iOS we released Taffy: Feed the Kitty and Sadie Sparks: Magical Match.
More games are in production on either console/PC or Android/iOS, and some will release this year! All Cyber Group Studios games are family-friendly and provide a safe and fun environment for our young audience. They enable the fans of our TV series to further immerse themselves in their favorite shows.
What kind of advice would you give an animation start-up who would like to dip their toes in the challenging world of modern licensing?
I think that the key phrases are good storytelling, appealing characters and access to the various media with long-term perspectives. A high quality of animation and creativity are also required. Finally, content must be accessible to consumers globally through the various media platforms. Lastly, the licensing business is driven by good partnerships and compelling products.

U.K. entertainment talent development organizations ScreenSkillls (skreenskills.com) and ACCESS VFX (accessvfx.org) have announced that the popular Young Animator of the Year (YAY UK) program is back for 2022, with a suite of activities planned for the summer.
YAY UK encourages young people to pursue creative skills to help build the talent of tomorrow, empowering gifted up and comers to create an amazing animation and help launch the creative career of their dreams.
Teenage animators can join the 3Dami 10-day Summer Studio — supported by the ScreenSkills Animation Skills Fund using contributions from animations productions — as well as entering a competition for the chance to be crowned the Young Animator of the Year UK 2022!
Giving New Talent a Leg Up
Winners of previous year’s YAY UK competitions have had quick career success. Josh Palfrey, the winner of the 3D category in 2020, got onto the internship program at a major U.K. character animation studio, Blue Zoo. Palfrey exceeded all expectations in the internship, which quickly led to a full-time job, where he became the studio’s youngest ever 3D artist.
3Dami Summer Studio
Applications are now open for the 3Dami Summer Studio, where students work together with animation experts to create every part of a 3D film in just 10 days. 3Dami works with industry mentors to give students all the help and support they need to learn about 3D-asset creation and animation. The event will run across 10 days from July 25 to August 5, 2022.
Previous students of the 3Dami summer studio have gone on to work at major studios including ILM, The Mill, Blue Zoo, MPC and DNEG.
YAY UK Competition & Studio Challenges
YAY UK is hosting a competition challenging teenage artists across the U.K. to make their own short animated films in 2D, 3D,and stop-motion styles. Awards will be given for the Best Young 2D Animator, 3D Animator and Stop-Motion Animator across age groups 11-14 and 15-18. The winner’s films will be screened at Manchester Animation Festival (manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk) in November.
Entries for the competition can be submitted via the YAY UK website from May 16 until the deadline of September 5, 2022.
Throughout the summer, YAY UK will also be giving teenagers a range of short creative animation challenges set by some of the U.K.’s biggest animation studios. These challenges will help the artists learn tricks and techniques to devise their stories and create their own animations.
