Watch: ‘Mavka. The Forest Song’ Team Shares Message of Ukrainian Resilience in Final Production Stages

The unbreakable creatives at Ukraine’s Animagrad animation studio (part of FILM.UA Group) announce they have entered the final stage of production for their highly-anticipated animated fantasy feature, Mavka. The Forest Song. Despide facing the violent invasion by Russia, the team is on track to complete the project for its planned delivery in Q4 2022.

Already the headline project in the studio’s lineup (pre-sold to more than 20 countries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa), Mavka‘s release will now take on an even more signifcant, symbolic value for Ukrainians as the film celebrates not only the unique folklore, culture and artistry of the country, but also the triumph of love and peace.

“Our stories are our weapon. So, we have to be loud. One of the instruments for us to be loud is to make a huge effort now not only to finish the production, but also to distribute the rights to as many countries as possible, so that we are heard all over the globe,” said producer Iryna Kostyuk. “Also for that purpose we are trying to involve international star talent — especially those who have publicly declared their support to Ukraine — to be the voice cast of our wonderful characters of the international version of the movie.”

Animagrad has released a special video to give the international audience a glimpse of what the team has overcome to restart production just days after Russia launched its full-scale war on Ukraine. Artists, technicians and production workers survived displacement, sheltered from bomb strikes and returned to just-vacated occupied territories to bring Mavka to life. The video also includes never-before-seen footage from the film.

“We are longing for that very moment when audiences all around the globe, of both kids and grownups, will not only enjoy the beautiful imagery of our film and the exciting story, but will also learn the message that we’ve been trying to work on for so many years,” Kostyuk concludes in the video. “The message that says: Love and kindness will always win, because love is the most precious thing we humans have.”

Mavka. The Forest Song is one of the top projects being featured in FILM.UA Distribution’s catalog at the Cannes Film Market (May 17-25). A new poster crafted for the occasion updates the key art by tinting elements of Mavka’s magical forest with the yellow and blue colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Cannes attendees can find Mavka presented as one of the five international projects selected for the work-in-progress section of Animation Day  on May 22 at 9:30 a.m. (“Annecy Goes to Cannes 2022” event). Producers Anna Eliseeva and Egor Olesov will be on hand to introduce the film and participate in a follow-up Q&A.  A screening of all the finished scenes will be held on May 23 at 2:15 p.m. (email e.drachov@film.ua for more informaiton).

The entire Ukrainian film industry is represented in Cannes in a joint national pavilion under the slogan #StandWithUkraine. In addition, FILM.UA Group Distribution has also opened its own stand at Palais des Festivals (booth number J11). The team is particularly focusing on negotiating rights sales to the North American and Chinese markets as well as global streaming platforms.

Mavka. The Forest Song

Mavka. The Forest Song is a CG-animated feature film based on the masterpiece fairytale drama by Lesia Ukrainka, an outstanding Ukrainian writer, as well as on Ukrainian myths and legends.

“Mavka is a strong female character from Ukrainian legends. She strives for peace in her world like millions of Ukrainians and people across the globe do,” says Oleg Malamuzh, the movie’s director. “Together with other female characters of  Animagrad’s  animated features The Stolen Princess (2018) and Roxelana (in development), Mavka embodies the strength of the spirit of a Ukrainian character.”

You can read more about how the team at Animagrad have pulled together to complete their ambitious, empowering film and support their community in the upcoming 35th Anniversary issue of Animation Magazine (available soon).

Sacha Baron Cohen, Greg Daniels, Mike Judge Develop Animated Special ‘Chelm: The Smartest Place on Earth’ for HBO Max, CN

HBO Max and Cartoon Network announced today during the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfronts that Sacha Baron Cohen (Academy Award-nominated Borat and Who Is America?) has teamed up with Greg Daniels (King of the Hill) and Mike Judge (King of the Hill) of the newly formed Bandera Entertainment, as well as Michael Koman (SNL, co-creator of Nathan for You, EP of HBO’s How to with John Wilson) to bring their fresh wit to new, younger audiences with a new family-oriented animated special.

Set in the mythical “Town of Fools” and originally told in Yiddish, Chelm: The Smartest Place on Earth shares the absurdist humor and interpretive questioning that is a nod to Jewish intellectual traditions. Narrated by Cohen, the special will present a fresh take on the silly antics and exaggerated conflicts of the town, while also preserving the essence and heart of the classic folktales.

“This pitch was so hilarious; we just knew the HBO Max audience needed to get a dose of this original brand of storytelling. Chelm: The Smartest Place on Earth is a perfect pairing of comedy and satire, and no one does that combination better than Sacha, Greg, Mike, and Michael,” said Amy Friedman, Head of Kids & Family Programming, Warner Bros. “This unique project will breathe new, hysterical life into the nonsensical Chelmic wisdom that originated from this imaginary city of folks who aren’t quite the sharpest tools in the shed.”

Cohen, Greg Daniels and Mike Judge are developing the story with Michael Koman, who is also attached to write. The four will executive produce the special, alongside Bandera’s President Dustin Davis.

The Amazing Maurice

Following Sky’s successful Up Next showcase event at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London last night (May 17), where the broadcaster unveiled an exciting slate of programming to a star-studded line up of British talent, it has released first-look trailers for seven of its upcoming original British series.

These series sit among over 200 Sky Original shows across all genres this year – a 60% increase from 2021 and testament to Sky’s investment in the U.K. creative economy.

Of course, the stand-out title of the batch for Animation Magazine is the highly anticipated CGI-animated feature, The Amazing Maurice!

A lively animated adventure based on one of Sir Terry Pratchett’s wildly popular Discworld novels starring Hugh Laurie (Avenue 5), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), David Thewlis (Wonder Woman), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Gemma Arterton (The King’s Man) and Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey).

Synopsis: Maurice is a streetwise ginger cat who masterminds a money-making scam by befriending a group of talking rats and a human boy, Keith. Going town to town, the rats pretend to infest the town and Keith uses his pipe to lead them away – all for a tidy profit. However, as Maurice and the rodents reach the stricken town of Bad Blintz, they discover something sinister going down beneath the city’s streets.

The Amazing Maurice is directed by Toby Genkel (Yakari: A Spectacular JourneyAll Creatures Big and Small) from a script by Terry Rossio (Aladdin, Shrek). The animation is produced by Germany’s Ulysses Filmproduktion (producer: Emely Christians) and co-produced by U.K.’s Cantilever Media (producers: Andrew Baker and Robert Chandler), with additional animation provided by Sheffield-based studio Red Star 3D.

The film was sneak-peeked at Cartoon Movie earlier this year.

Leading adult animation outlet Adult Swim, the #1 screen destination for young adults, announced the greenlight of two all-new anime series: Rick and Morty: The Anime from director Takashi Sano (Tower of God) and Ninja Kamui from director Sunghoo Park (God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen).

Announced during the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfronts, both series are in production and will premiere on Adult Swim and HBO Max.

“Toonami helped introduce anime to a U.S. audience 25 years ago, and is creating new, dynamic originals for the next generation of anime fans,” said Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim. “These two series build on the legacy of those recent originals such as Fena: Pirate PrincessBlade Runner: Black LotusShenmue the Animation, with Uzumaki and Housing Complex C, premiering later this year.”

Rick and Morty: The Anime

Based on the Emmy-award-winning adult animated series, Rick and Morty: The Anime is a 10-episode adventure debuting on Adult Swim and HBO Max. Sano previously directed two anime shorts, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), which received widespread fan and critical acclaim upon release, generating over 10 million combined views on Adult Swim digital platforms.

While celebrated anime director (and Rick and Morty superfan) Sano will adapt themes and events of the main series, Rick and Morty: The Anime will stand on its own as an original work. “The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion. It’s such a life affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception,” explains Sano. “I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

Like Sano’s previous Rick and Morty anime shorts, the series is from Telecom Animation Film (Lupin the IIIrd SeriesShenmue the AnimationTower of God).

Ninja Kamui

A futuristic action/adventure anime, Ninja Kamui comes on the heels of the massive success of Park’s recent anime feature Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the seventh biggest anime film of all time and the 15th highest grossing film in Japan of all time.

Ninja Kamuifollows Joe Higan who is a Nukenin — a former ninja who escaped his clan and is hiding from his violent past in rural America with his family. One night, he is ambushed by a team of assassins from his former organization who exact a bloody retribution on Joe and his family for betraying their ancient code. Rising from his seeming “death,” Joe will re-emerge as his former self — Ninja Kamui — to avenge his family and friends. Kamui is a 21st century ninja, a shadowy anachronism who pits his ancient skills against high-tech weaponry with brutal finesse. He must face off against trained assassins, combat cyborgs, and rival ninjas to bring down the very clan that made him.

“This is a story I’ve always wanted to tell,” said Park. “Transgression and punishment of a ninja who loses everything and goes out for revenge, and what lies at the end of his road. I am very excited about this new project and hope fans will be too.”

Ninja Kamuifeatures character designs by Takeshi Okazaki (Afro Samurai, Star Wars VisionsBatman: Ninja), and is produced by E&H Production and Sola Entertainment (Lord of The Rings: War of The RohirrimBlade Runner: Black LotusUltraman).

Exclusive: Disney Junior Welcomes Deaf Drum Wiz Fig to ‘Mickey Mouse Funhouse’

0
Mickey Mouse Funhouse
Mickey Mouse Funhouse

This weekend, young viewers were introduced to a special new friend of the Mickey Mouse Funhouse when “The Music of the Seasons” premiered on Friday, May 13 on Disney Junior. Set to re-air throughout the month, this episode saw iconic Disney characters connect with Fig the gnome — a gifted drummer and music lover, who also happens to be deaf. In this new preschool adventure, Fig and his hearing sister, Olive, help Minnie and Daisy understand how he communicates and creates his danceable drum beats.

“The Music of the Seasons” was brought to screens by writer Kate Moran, who previously worked with the classic characters in Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures and has credits on Chip ‘n Dale’s Nutty Tales, Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Gravity Falls. In addition to drawing on her personal experience with deaf family members, Moran was aided by consultants (and brothers): RespectAbility board member and animation veteran Delbert Whetter (Igor, upcoming Pierre the Pigeon Hawk) and fellow deaf filmmaker/American Sign Language consultant Jevon Whetter (Live at the Deaf Club, upcoming Flash Before the Bang), who performed the ASL dialog for the animation team’s reference videos.

We caught up with the episode experts over email to find out more about developing Fig’s character, crafting an inclusive story for kids and how to adapt ASL for four cartoon fingers (or even no fingers). Disney Junior was also kind enough to provide a clip featuring Fig, Olive, Minnie and Daisy so you can watch them in action. (The character is expected to return for more Funhouse fun soon!)

Animation Magazine: How did you come up with the idea for Fig’s character?

Kate Moran: Fig is an amalgam of my deaf and hard of hearing cousins and two deaf drummers I’m a huge fan of.

I wanted Fig to be the kind of character my cousins and I would have delighted in seeing when we were children, where any differences are a wonderful addition to the character but not necessarily the defining characteristic of the character.

When it came to crafting the story and incorporating American Sign Language — did the most age-appropriate signs influence the story, or vice versa?

The story came first, based on my love of Fall (my favorite season), gnomes, music and the magic of letting people be their best selves.

What are the key goals and considerations when crafting an awareness message for young kids?

Kate: My main goal is to show that differences can bring wonderful things to friendships, that “normal” is a wider spectrum than previously represented.

Jevon Whetter: Our team is very mindful of the target audience when we create ASL dialog for animation — we will carefully choose ASL signs that are appropriate for young signers with a developing ASL vocabulary, especially if they are also early readers, which means captions may not be very accessible to them, if at all.

For such audiences, we often encourage creators to consider incorporating more visual elements into their content that complements its dialog or sound elements, which helps convey understanding and context while uplifting one’s imagination.

For instance, if a character is singing a song about life underwater, the content may include underwater features or fish in the form of graphics or animation in the background, or performing lyrics in ASL using nuances that resemble signing ASL while underwater.

What are the benefits (and perhaps challenges!) of using animation to explore real-life issues, disability and diversity?

Delbert: I am a long-time veteran of the animation industry with over 20+ years of experience in producing animated feature films. I have always believed we are uniquely positioned to be a leader in disability inclusion in Hollywood because there is literally nothing under the sun that cannot be created with or about people with disabilities. The only limit is one’s imagination.

With that comes countless possibilities and opportunities for storytelling, but that also means that we have an obligation to “get it right” by ensuring that we do not rely on old tropes or stereotypes but instead, tap into the rich tapestry of experiences that are represented by experiences of authentic persons with disabilities.

Kate: Animation can be an amazing medium to explore real-life issues! For example, I am grateful that Mickey and Minnie have a deaf friend and the positive impact that can have on children who see Mickey and Minnie being friends with someone like themselves.

I think representing some of these issues in animation can create additional challenges, like animating ASL — but I also believe that these challenges should be met head-on. It’s time. And the benefits far, far outweigh any additional effort needed. I want to say to these kids that they are absolutely 100% worth the effort to show them on screen. It just feels good to see someone who is like you.

Mickey Mouse Funhouse
Fig (left) gets to know Minnie and Daisy with a little help from his sister, Olive, in ‘Mickey Mouse Funhouse’. Both characters use ASL in the new episode.

It must have been hard to get those classic four-fingered cartoon hands to sign clearly. How was it managed?

Delbert Whetter: It is actually not hard at all… ASL is a language that incorporates body language and facial expressions just as much as it does the hands and fingers. We can communicate in ASL with just one hand while holding an object, for instance, or with fingerless mittens in cold weather, by adapting the way we express ourselves in ASL with careful nuances that often come naturally to deaf signers.

This is why it is so important to incorporate authentic, deaf-led professionals into the creative process, because the solutions to many of the challenges or conditions that deaf characters might find themselves in frequently can be found only within the lived life experience of an authentically deaf person. Moreover, many deaf performers are well-versed in the art of performing ASL as characters of all shapes, sizes and species such as lions or fantastical creatures for stage plays. For instance, in our animation work we have created ASL dialog for animal characters that have hooves, wings and claws.

How does it feel to put ASL in the gloved hands of such iconic Disney characters?

Delbert & Jevon: It is truly awe-inspiring — we feel so privileged and honored to connect young deaf and hard of hearing children with such iconic characters as Mickey and Minnie using ASL, a language that is visually accessible to them.

There have been a few other animated series introducing deaf or hard of hearing characters and ASL in recent months — do you think this is a function of culture, disability activism, the technological capacity of animation … all of the above?

Delbert: We have worked on a number of animated series incorporating animated ASL dialog for Disney, such as Big City Greens, as well as for other studios, and I can tell you without a doubt, that there is a clear uptick of interest and enthusiasm for deaf/hard of hearing animated characters and ASL dialog. But, more importantly, for other characters with other disabilities as well.

Much of this is due to the hard work of organizations like RespectAbility (I serve on their board of directors), which has tirelessly built relationships with children’s content creators throughout the industry to ensure that children with disabilities not only see themselves on screen, but can feel that their voices are seen and heard as well.

A key part of RespectAbility’s mission involves connecting creators with “behind the camera” professionals (such as writers, directors, producers, artists, etc.) with disabilities who not only know the industry but have lived life experience as a disabled person, which supplies them with plentiful creative material that is fresh, authentic and relatable for all.

Kate Moran
Kate Moran

Looking forward five years, how do you think disability diversity and representation in animation will measure up? How can the industry embrace more of it?

Kate: Looking forward five years, I would love for representation to not even have to be a conversation, that it is just normal — because it’s our world, this is what is outside in the lives we live. But getting there means that initially, it will take individuals making that effort to push forward these stories and characters. It can be intimidating to be the first or only voice to suggest it; do it anyway. Please.

Mickey Mouse Funhouse premiered in Summer 2021 and has been greenlit for a second season. New episodes air Fridays on Disney Channel and Disney Junior, available on demand through DisneyNOW.

In Monday’s Upfronts, Fox announced that its ad-supported streamer Tubi is getting a trio of exclusive animated movies from its Bento Box Entertainment studio (Bob’s Burgers, Duncanville, The Great North, Housebroken). The projects include original concepts from Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creator Matt Maiellaro, comedian Sam Taggart and stand-up comic Jerron Horton.

First on the slate is Maiellaro’s  Pastacolypse. The movie is a wild horror-comedy concept about a billionaire celebrity chef who seeks revenge when a global ban on gluten destroys his life. In the process, Alfredo Manicotti is transformed into a hideous half-man, half-macaroni creature, and leads a pasta uprising against humanity. The fate of mankind rests with Alfredo’s spoiled daughter, the angel-haired heiress Emma, who must make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world from the impending ‘pastacolypse’.

In addition to ATHF, Maiellaro’s portfolio of Adult Swim cult toon hits includes creating 12 oz. Mouse, co-creating Perfect Hair Forever and serving as writer/producer for Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Sealab 2021.

Millennial Hunter is an action-comedy that centers on a flawed hero with a thirst for righteous revenge against his enemies: Millennials. The project is conceived by actor/writer/comedian Taggart (Los Espookys, ZIWE), host of the longrunning New York alt-comedy show Future Forms and named one of Brooklyn’s 50 Funniest by Brooklyn Magazine.

Big Bruh is a satirical comedy centered on an undefeated boxing champ who is “as ignorant as he is materialistic,” who gets paired with a “bratty kid with high morals” through the mentorship program Big Bruh. This odd couple comes from Duncanville co-producer  & writer Horton, who is also executive story editor for Tracy Mordan’s The Last O.G.

Netflix Lays Off 150 Employees, Eliminates 70 Animation Positions; DuVernay’s ‘Wings of Fire’ Canceled

In another round of layoffs in the wake of declining subscriber numbers and stock value, Netflix has laid off 150 employees accross the company — representing two percent of its workforce, largely in the U.S. The streamer is also eliminating 70 roles from its animation unit, as well as roles for social media and publishing contractors. The cuts were revealed in an internal memo sent Tuesday and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

These layoffs come less than a month after Netflix let go at least 10 full-time staffe and contractors in its editorial and marketing divisions. Employees being let go are expected to receive severance packages, starting at four months’ coverage.

A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement: “As we explained on earnings, our slowing revenue growth means we are also having to slow our cost growth as a company. So sadly, we are letting around 150 employees go today, mostly U.S.-based. These changes are primarily driven by business needs rather than individual performance, which makes them especially tough as none of us want to say goodbye to such great colleagues. We’re working hard to support them through this very difficult transition.”

In the company’s April Q1 earnings report, it came to light that the embattled streaming champ had lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter and expected an additional 2 milllion to drop off in the second. To cushion the impact, Netflix will introduce an ad-supported subscription option and cut down on spending.

At the beginning of the month, a trio of animated Netflix Kids & Family projects were nixed from the slate: Jeff King’s Dino Daycare (part of kids’ animation whiz Chris Nee’s initial slate with the streamer), Meghan Markle’s Pearl and Jaydeep Hasrajani’s Boons and Curses.

Today, Variety reported that the animated adaptation of author Tui T. Sutherland’s fantasy saga Wings of Fire has also been axed. The 10 x 40′ event series aimed at families was to be the first animation project for Emmy winner Ava DuVernay and ARRAY Filmworks, with animation by Warner Bros. Animation. Greg the Bunny creator Dan Milano and veteran VFX artist Christa Starr were adapting the books and were set as showrunners and executive producers; DuVernay, Sutherland, Sam Register and Sarah Bremner were also exec producing.

Those employees who stay on will be subject to the new Netflix corporate culture memo sent out last week, advising workers to “spend our members’ money wisely” and introducing a new section called “Artistic Expression” which, following the walkouts and employee protests sparked by comedian Dave Chapelle’s anti-LGBTQ jokes in The Closer, asserts that “Netflix offers a diversity of stories, even if we find some titles counter to our own personal values” and that unwillingness to work on “titles you perceive to be harmful” means “Netflix may not be the best place for you.”

Being Betty Flood

Germany’s Studio 100 Film (Maya the Bee – First Flight), Australia’s POP Family Entertainment (Alien TV) and Ireland’s Telegael jointly announce their partnership for the whimsical and wacky animated comedy, Being Betty Flood. The announcement was made today by Thorsten Wegener, Director of Business Operations at Studio 100 Film, POP Family Entertainment’s Executive Producers Carmel Travers and Gerry Travers, and Cathy Ní Fhlaithearta, Head of Production at Telegael.

The 87-minute feature film, targeted at 8- to 14-yearolds and set for delivery in Autumn 2023, introduces Betty — a headstrong, smart 12-year-old girl torn between her over-protective mother and her desire to prove her magical and musical abilities. As she navigates the challenges of growing up and finding her place in the world, her relationships with her family and friends echo the experiences of young girls all over the world in this universal movie full of magic and mayhem.

The production is described as rich in both visual content and textures with 3D locations and characters, and will be the first to utilize Amazon Nimble Studio which empowers creative studios to produce visual effects, animation, and interactive content entirely in the cloud, from storyboard sketch to final deliverable.

The international co-pro will be distributed worldwide by Studio 100 Film. The film is an Official Treaty Co-Production between Australia and Ireland, which allows Being Betty Flood to be marketed with full European status.

Synopsis: From a fantastic world where magic rules the land, a wild free-spirited, music-loving girl named Betty is about to celebrate her 13th birthday.

But Betty and The Flood family are fugitives — on the run from a malicious King who has been hunting them from before Betty was even born. Betty’s world is turned upside down when the King discovers her whereabouts and deliberately misrepresents her family’s secret past.

Betty’s actions put her family at great risk. To save them all, she and her friend Nat will embark on a journey to confront the King, to learn the truth about her family and along the way discover her one special gift will set them free.

Adapted and written by Harry Cripps and Cleon Prineas, the film is based on the 13-book series The Floods written and illustrated by award winning Australian author Colin Thompson, which has been a stellar performer in the Australian and New Zealand kids’ book market for the last 12 years, with over 1 million copies sold across the series.

“POP Family is thrilled to bring to the screen the fantastical world of 12 year-old Betty Flood and her very ‘different’ family of witches, wizards and ghouls!” said Carmel Travers, CEO of POP Family Entertainment. “In a thrilling adaptation of Colin Thompson’s books, and working with great international partners, Studio 100 Film Germany and Telegael Ireland, Being Betty Flood is truly a universal story of a young girl’s passage from child to teenager, determined to pursue her love of magic and music, despite her hilariously challenging family circumstances.

“Ultimately this is a funny, warm-hearted film about a young girl finding out who she really is,” she added.

Telegael Producer Cathy Ní Fhlaithearta said, “Telegael is excited to work with our colleagues POP and Studio 100 on such a wonderful and important story that not only follows Betty on her quest to uncover the family’s secret past but understands a teenager’s journey of self-discovery.”

Studio 100 Film’s Director Business Operations Thorsten Wegener added, “It’s a privilege to be working with POP Family and Telegael to bring this wild animated comedy film to the big screen. Apart from producing a movie with a strong female character, Betty represents so many teenagers and young adults who are still trying to figure out where they belong. We are sure that not only girls but whole families will identify with the characters and love this film.”

Just as Daria did for Daria Morgendorffer when it was a spin-off of Beavis and ButtheadJodie will delve deeper into Jodie Landon as she goes from feeling like she had to be “the perfect African-American teen” at Lawndale High to headlining her own story.

0
Gremlins cast

Ahead of the show’s debut at Annecy next month, Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television treated fans today to a first look at the Wing family from the upcoming HBO Max animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai

The close-knit family is at the center of this epic prequel series that unlocks the mystery of how a 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 Gremlins movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. The series will debut this year on HBO Max and will also be available later as part of ACME Night on Cartoon Network.

Steeped in China’s rich culture and mythology, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai takes viewers back to 1920s Shanghai where the Wing family first discovers the mysterious creature. Sam Wing, the youngest in the family, accepts the dangerous task to take Gizmo home and embarks on a journey through the Chinese countryside. Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, and together, they encounter — and sometimes battle — colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

The Wing family is voiced by an esteemed cast led by Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.DThe MandalorianMulan), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little ChinaBlade RunnerMulan) — who was  honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this month, BD Wong (Mr. RobotJurassic World film franchise) and Izaac Wang.

Ming Na Wen Gremlins

  • Fong Wing (voiced by Ming-Na Wen) — Fong Wing is Sam’s mother and a doctor of Chinese medicine. She’s resourceful, slyly funny, and fiercely protective of her family, even her frequently troublesome father.  She’ll do anything to aid and protect her son.

James Hong Gremlins[1]

  • Grandpa (voiced by James Hong) — A free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myth and magic, Grandpa is the elder of the Wing family. He claims to have traveled the world on grand adventures, but nobody really believed him… until now. He alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them.

BD Wong Gremlins

  • Hon Wing (voiced by BD Wong) — Hon Wing is Sam’s father and the family’s calm rock. He’s never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure. But when he and Fong become separated from Sam, he realizes the world is stranger than he thought, and that he’ll need to become braver to reunite his family.

Izaac Wang Gremlins

  • Sam Wing (voiced by Izaac Wang) — Sam Wing is a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeep and Gizmo’s guardian in the original Gremlins films. Young Sam lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine shop. Sheltered and cautious, Sam will be thrown into the adventure of a lifetime when he promises his Grandpa he’ll get Gizmo home.

Disney-Pixar Details ‘Elemental,’ Coming Summer 2023

Elemental
Elemental

Pixar Animation Studios today revealed details about its 27th feature film, Elemental, which will release on June 16, 2023.

Directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur, Partly Cloudy short) and produced by Denise Ream (The Good Dinosaur, Cars 2), the film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

Elemental is an original film inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams — all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental.

“Our story is based on the classic elements — fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
