Chris Robinson
Chris Robinson is the longtime artistic director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival and author of many books, including Estonian Animation, Unsung Heroes of Animation, Canadian Animation and Mad-Eyed Misfits: Writing on Indie Animation. He also wrote the award-winning short Lipsett Diaries. Here, he gives Animation Magazine a sneak peek at this year’s much-anticipated event:
To paraphrase the not-so-great George Costanza, “We’re back, baby! We’re back! ”
That’s right: After two years of serving up the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) in the (dis)comfort of your homes, the OIAF returns to in-person activities this September 21-25.
We don’t dare call it the post-pandemic phase because we all know it ain’t over yet (and, well, the world is going to hell anyway), but we’re at least back on the road after two years parked in a garage.
If the pandemic proved anything, it’s that festivals are better in person. The last two years clearly demonstrated that festivals are about much more than films. They’re about bringing a community of people together to share emotional, intellectual and social experiences.
Okay, enough of my half-assed musings about existence. Let’s get on with what’s in store for OIAF22. Perhaps some of you will be attending for the first time, and maybe some of the veteran OIAFers have gotten rusty and forgotten how to navigate it all.
Xi Chen & Xu An’s ‘The Loach’ is one of the international shorts in competition this year.
Discoveries Short and Long
So, it all starts with the five short competitions (each of them hosted by two self-proclaimed comedians). That’s the core of the OIAF, the essence, the soul. There are feature, VR and series competitions, but the short film is the reason every animation festival worth its beans began in the first place. Festivals exist to provide a platform for artists who don’t otherwise have easy access to an audience.
The competitions are a sort of highly subjective mixed-tape of some of the most engaging animation films being made today. And what makes Ottawa unique is that we don’t segregate. The short competitions feature narrative, non-narrative (i.e. experimental), commissioned (music videos, commercials, ids) and student work. That makes for a somewhat eclectic experience. And sure, you won’t like every film, maybe not even every second film, but you’ll find something that resonates. All of these films will be judged by a jury consisting of Oscar-nominee Hugo Covarrubias (Bestia), Canadian stop-motion animator Terril Calder (Meneath) and Croatian collage artist Marko Tadić.
Acclaimed filmmaker Amy Kravitz is OIAF’s 2022 Honorary President.
Oh, and the next day you get a chance to “Meet the Filmmakers” during a session where I moderate discussions between the audience and attending competition filmmakers. It’s a mix of insightful, heated and silly.
Beyond that, we’ve got the Panorama screenings. This is essentially a collection of films that didn’t quite make the cut for competition but that we feel should be seen by an audience. There are also two Young Audiences competitions that are judged by kids. That’s always refreshing because kids’ juries aren’t part of the community and offer blunt assessments.
Now, the OIAF isn’t just about the present and future of animation. Animation’s history is vital to the Festival. You see, quite often films just vanish quietly into the dustbins of history after their festival run (if they’re lucky enough to have a festival run). The OIAF retrospectives and special screenings are a way to keep the past alive and to present works in a variety of contexts. This year, the OIAF is serving up retrospectives of acclaimed American indie (and OIAF22 Honorary President) Amy Kravitz. There’s also a tribute to the legendary Oscar-winning National Film Board of Canada animator John Weldon (Special Delivery). We’ve also got retrospectives of lesser-known voices: Marko Tadić is a Croatian artist/animator whose mixed media works fuse documentary, history and science fiction; Jonni Phillips is an American artist who has quite a cult following in the world of computers, but who isn’t that well known on the animation festival circuit. And our jury member, Hugo Covarrubias, has put together a special screening looking at the rise of contemporary Chilean animation. And while you’re racing about between venues you can explore our Augmented Realities attractions, on display around downtown Ottawa.
We Lost Our Human
The Pulse of the Industry
Okay, now the OIAF is not just about showcasing all that “weird, artsy-fartsy” stuff; there’s a whole industry side to the Festival as well. The Animation Conference (TAC) is a three-day-long conference that attracts producers, recruiters, and assorted studio folks from around the globe. Among the highlights of TAC is the popular Pitch THIS! (presented with Mercury Filmworks), which gives Canadian animators a chance to pitch a series idea to a jury of industry pros. There’s the Animation Exposé, which features a day-long series of talks by artists from your favorite shows and movies. This year, Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt will offer a sneak peek of their upcoming interactive Netflix special We Lost Our Human.
Hey, but you know what? Let’s get to the most important part of the OIAF: the parties. As I prattled on about before, the OIAF (and any decent festival, really) is about bringing people together from different parts of the world to have some fun and share knowledge and experiences.
Pumpkin carving at the Animators Picnic
Every day at the OIAF, there is a party or social event of some kind; the most well-known of these is the Cartoon Network Studios Animator’s Picnic, which includes the infamous Pumpkin Carving contest. There’s Bento Box’s Salon des Refuses (a chance to watch films that didn’t get accepted into the festival) and, of course, there’s the annual Saturday night bash, NightOwl. This year there’s an extra special treat: Nelvana’s Care Bears’ 40th Anniversary party. I have no idea what this will look like, but I understand that actual Care Bears will be in attendance.
Damn, I’ve gotta stop. They only gave me 700 words, and I’m already over that limit. It’s best that you come and experience it for yourselves. That’s the only way to really understand the beautiful madness that is the OIAF.
Head over to animationfestival.ca to find out about the many other events happening at OIAF22 and then start plotting out what will be a frantic, exhausting, memorable and inspiring week.

Families can add to their holiday season celebrations with a jolly new CBS Original animated special: Reindeer in Here. The one-hour event will premiere Tuesday, November 29 (9-10 p.m., ET/PT), immediately following the Rankin/Bass stop-motion classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (8-9 p.m., ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.
Based on the award-winning Christmas book and plush set created by Adam Reed and written for the screen by Greg Erb & Jason Oremland, Reindeer in Hereis the heartwarming story of how Blizzard (Blizz), a young reindeer living at the North Pole who has an unusual trait — one antler that is significantly smaller than the other — and his unique group of friends band together to save the future of Christmas. In doing so, they unknowingly create a magical holiday tradition like none other.
“I fell in love with this project the moment I read the script, and immediately connected with the ‘different is normal’ message,” said executive producer and director Lino DiSalvo (Playmobil: TheMovie), who as former head of animation for Walt Disney Animation Studios helped bring Frozen, Tangled and Bolt to the big screen. “I love that Blizzard, our hero character, no matter the situation, has belief in himself, even when others might not, despite his differences.”
In the special, Blizz just wants to show Santa that his original inventions can make Christmas even better. Theo, a lonely 10-year-old boy, is the new kid in town who longs to make friends. When a mysterious villain swipes the magical snow globe that holds the wishes of every child in the world, these two unlikely heroes become Santa’s only hope to save Christmas. Blizzard and Theo can’t save Christmas all on their own, so they enlist the help of their trustworthy friends.
Their journey includes a unique, quirky and loveable cast of characters including Candy, the over-sharing Snowgirl; Pinky, the only entirely pink reindeer at the North Pole; Hawk, the endearingly dim-witted mohawked polar bear; Bucky, the big-toothed nervous-nelly reindeer; the adorable and hilarious Smiley the elf, who has served as Santa’s harried H.O.H.O (Head of Holiday Operations) for the past 500 years; and Isla, Theo’s brilliant classmate.
The first-look image released today features Blizz, Smiley, Santa and Candy.
“As Blizzard tells Theo, ‘don’t hide what makes you unique,’ and this joyful hour of television, meant for the whole family, celebrates just that,” said Reed, who is an executive producer on the special. “Reindeer in Here is a story that encourages not only accepting our differences, but celebrating them. It’s a story filled with laughter, joy, friendship and heart that we hope will join the list of beloved holiday classics families watch together year after magical year.”
Launched in 2017, Reindeer in Here sold out on Amazon in under two hours and became an instant Amazon #1 new release and best seller. The book has since won 12 major awards, including Creative Child magazine’s Book of the Year, a gold Mom’s Choice Award and the prestigious National Parenting Center seal of approval. Reed initially created Reindeer in Here for his own children because of what he felt was a lack of positive holiday tradition brands in the market that didn’t also stress out parents in the process.
Reed also runs the Emmy Award-nominated production company Thinkfactory Media. He has produced over 1,000 hours of television, including Gene Simmons Family Jewels, the Marriage Boot Camp franchise, Hatfields & McCoys, Rat in the Kitchen and Mama June. He is also an accomplished commercial director, having been shortlisted at the Cannes International Advertising Festival.
The Reindeer in Here special is created and executive produced by Reed, produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions. Erb and Oremland (The Princess and the Frog, Monster High: The Movie) are executive producers and writers. Jonathan Koch and Sander Schwartz are executive producers and DiSalvo is director and executive producer. Animation production is by Ottawa-based JamFilled; executive producers for JamFilled are Jamie Leclaire, Phil Lafrance and Kyle Mac Dougall.
Helsinki-based Gigglebug Entertainment and French studio Zodiak’s new children’s animated series The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti is described as an “offbeat comedy series set in a quirky little town above the Arctic Circle,” and it follows the adventures of three friends: surfer dude Osmok, his energetic cousin Rita and the titular Yellow Yeti. We had the chance to speak with Gigglebug’s CEO Anttu Harlin about his fun new show, which is premiering on Disney Channel (EMEA) this fall.
Animation Magazine: Congrats on the arrival of your new show this fall. Can you tell us a bit about the origins of your Yellow Yeti?
Anttu Harlin
Anttu Harlin: It all started with this awesome six-inch yellow felt puppet yeti that Joonas Utti [Gigglebug’s co-founder/creative director] made on a weekend! The design was stand-out funny and we joked around about what an outcast of a monster this yellow guy would be among yetis, who are supposed to be camouflaged in their environment and never seen. He would even leave these yellow tracks in the snow. And you’d get these kids who are tracking his tracks, wondering about the yellow snow.
So, it was just a bunch of stupid jokes and an awesome character design to begin with. But when we find something simple and funny like that, we think it as a hook that could be developed into something more substantial. We showed an image of the original Yellow Yeti to the Disney EMEA folks at a Cartoon Forum dinner and they laughed as well! They told us to come back when we know more about the stories we want to tell.
What did you love about the premise of the show?
It was full of funny and full of heart. The story we wanted to tell was about a friendship between a monster and two kids who want to have a blast despite of the odd rules of the quirky small town (named Winterton) they live in. Winterton is inspired by ‘Finnish Weird.’ We love to follow rules which makes us seem really straight, and we have a bunch of weird traditions that make us seem insane. Have you ever seen a show where the kids do a sauna competition or take part in compulsory ice swimming event? Finland is so far north, that we usually get cut off from the European weather map!
So, just like us Finns, Mayor Chrome of Winterton has a pipe dream of hosting the Winter Games and putting his town on the world map. But having a Yellow Yeti running around town majorly messes with his world order. The kids get around the rule of “Monsters Not Allowed” by putting disguises on their Yellow BFF. The town folks are pretty gullible and buy it all. They actually love the wild adventures that the newcomer brings and start to rebel!
The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti
When did you start working on it, and how long did it take to deliver?
The was character was born in 2013 and we made a development deal with Zodiak Kids and Disney EMEA in 2015. It took until 2020 to develop, finance and greenlight the show. That sounds like a long time, but the patience has definitely paid off! The production of 50 x 11′ + 11 x 2′ took about two years. Production has been super enjoyable and we are genuinely super proud of the show.
Where is the animation produced?
Gigglebug is co-producing the show together with Zodiak Kids Studio France. We’ve also partnered with Caribara for Toon Boom animation out of Annecy and Montreal. So the crew is split between Finland, U.K., France and Canada.
The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti
What was your biggest challenge (besides COVID!)?
This has been one of the most enjoyable productions and the partnerships have been really good! There is a real fandom among the different partners for the show, all the way from executives, writers, voice artists, throughout the pre-production and animation teams until the music and mix. The Yellow Yeti is just someone you want to cheer for and go the extra mile. But going the extra mile has probably been our biggest challenge at the same time, because it can contribute to exhaustion over a long production. So, I would say that pacing ourselves and looking after the well-being of the crews has been the biggest challenge.
Now that the show is ready to air, what are you most proud about?
We had an opening event for 200 people — 100 kids and 100 adults. I was suddenly super nervous about how people outside of the inside team would react. But my heart just melted at the reactions. Kids laughed and loved the show. After screening three episodes and two shorts, we brought out a six-foot mascot of the Yellow Yeti and the kids ran to hug him as if they had seen a celebrity like Justin Bieber or Adriana Grande. That made me super proud, the way that the kids genuinely started to love the Yellow Yeti. You can’t buy or fake that. The love was real.
I am also super proud about the culture we are building at Gigglebug’s studio, having grown to over 100 people. There is a whole generation of fresh talent here now and we just want to keep building on that.
Co-creator Joonas Utti poses with his lovable monster, the Yellow Yeti!
What is your take on the global animation scene in 2022?
We’re just fortunate and happy to have this momentum and to be part of the growth in the animation sector. We’re hiring 60 people this year and ramping up to have three parallel pipelines specializing in 2D comedy.
What do you hope audiences will get out of The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti?
Joy. Laughs. Adventure. Long-term fans. Multiple seasons! And a new character they will recognize and remember. Also, would be funny if someone wants to visit Finland after seeing the show!

European animation professionals know the summer season is officially over then it’s time for them to get ready for the annual Cartoon Forum pitchfest in Toulouse, France. The event, which takes place Sept. 19-22, promises to be another exciting gathering of toon pros, showcasing 80 new projects from 19 countries.
Picking a few shows out of many wonderful pitches is not an easy task, but we did our best to pick a few of the Cartoon Forum projects that looked quite promising this year:
A Day with the Dogs
A Day with the Dogs
This adaptation of the book by Dorothée de Monfreid (Les Toutous) is produced by French studio Dandelooo, which is best known for shows such as Billy the Cowboy Hamster, Stinky Dog and Mum Is Pouring Rain. The charming main character is a good-natured Saint-Bernard whose peaceful life in the countryside is disturbed by eight rambunctious young cousins during the holidays. Director Cedric Guarneri and producers Jean-Baptiste Wery and Emmanuèle Petry-Sirvin are leading the charming 2D preschool show.
Gustave
Gustave
Jeremy Barlozzo and Douglas Cavanna are the writer-directors of this offbeat show about an awkward and gullible duck whose life changes when he falls head over heels for the sassy rabbit Jessyfer. Too bad he often listens to the misguided advice of his housemate Pedro the elephant! The 54 x 2′ show, which is intended for young adults and older audiences, is produced by Deadliners Production (Arthur Blanc-Anthonioz) and co-produced by Andarta Pictures (Sophie Saget) in France.
Next Level: Odyssey
Next Level: Odyssey
You can always count on TeamTO to bring a cool show to the party, and this year is no exception. Targeting six- to 10-year-old audiences, Next Level: Odyssey mixes the world of gaming with mythology: It follows the adventures of Kiran, who falls through a portal into the world of classic Greek mythology while playing games at the Louvre Museum. Our hero is soon tasked with helping Odysseus get back to Ithaca with the help of a junior goddess Leuki. Inspired by Panique dans la Mythologie by Fabien Clavel and produced by Corinne Kouper, this 26 x 22′ show is definitely one to keep an eye on!
BFF
BFF
Think of it as a little bitty Friends sitcom for young animal buddies (without the ridiculously affordable New York apartments). Created by artist Gediminas Skyrius, written by Marija Kavtaradzė & Titas Laucius and directed by Urtė Oettinger, the new Polish-Lithuanian series BFF is a charming comedy about a clumsy bear (Ben), an eager squirrel (Frida) and a cool cate (Freddie). We love Skyrius’ detailed illustrations and the show’s breezy sense of humor which emphasizes the trio’s love for each other regardless of their social and familial differences. Produced by Lithuania’s Art Shot in collaboration with Poland’s GS Animation and Lithuania’s M-Films, the 2D-animated show targets kids five to seven and looks like the kind of show that can easily find its way into viewers’ hearts.
Shepherdess Warriors
Shepherdess Warriors
A brave 10-year-old girl named Molly from a small medieval seaside village begins her training as a fighter in Shepherdess Warriors (Bergerès Guerrières) the popular French comics series by Jonathan Garnier and Amélie Fléchais. The graphic novels are the inspiration behind a terrific looking 13 x 30′ show produced in France by Mathieu Courtois and Vivement Lundi! and co-produced by L’Incroyable Studio (Johan Chiron). The project’s tween audience should really enjoy the epic scope and entertaining adventures of this fierce little fighter.
See all the selected projects and register for Cartoon Forum 2022 at cartoon-media.eu/forum.
[Editor’s note — The original print version of this article, based on previously provided information, stated that there are 84 projects at this year’s Cartoon Forum. The story has been updated with the final number (80).]

This week, young viewers tuning in to Apple TV+ will discover the colorful world of Harvey the dog, Jinja the cat, Jack the rabbit, Robin the bird and many other bright-eyed and bushy-tailed residents of Sago Mini Friends. The show, which is inspired by the hugely popular Sago Mini World app, is executive produced by award-winning kids’ toon veterans Jennifer Dodge (PAW Patrol), Ronnen Harary (PAW Patrol), Dustin Ferrer (Esme & Roy) and Tone Thyne (Wonder Pets!, Go! Go! Cory Carson). We caught up with Thyne to find out more about this charming show, which is produced by Spin Master Entertainment and animated by 9 Story Media’s Emmy-winning studio Brown Bag Films in Toronto:
Animation Magazine: So, first things first. How did you get involved with this show?
Tone Thyne
Tone Thyne: As VP of Creative at FableVision Studios, I both create original properties and collaborate with best-in-class studios and broadcasters on their existing projects. Two years ago, I had been simultaneously writing scripts on an Apple series while developing a different show with Spin Master. It was completely a case of “three great tastes that taste great together” when Spin Master Entertainment and Apple decided to bring me on as showrunner on the world’s most delightful series!
What do you love about the original app and the show it inspired?
I love that the beloved Sago Mini app sparks playful exploration, imagination and discovery with gorgeously simple design, adorable characters and tons of spontaneous whimsy. It evokes pure joy.
In addition to each episode gently showcasing the importance of gratitude, I love how the series beautifully harnesses the left-field playfulness of the app. I’d always say that it’s not a Sago story unless it features an everyday scenario turned on its ear. Among others, a talking milk jug, a problem-solving log and a pair of garden gnomes (who get married every Wednesday) join the lovable Harvey as he builds a hot dog car and parades it through town, sings a lullaby to a sleeping loaf of bread and uses a giant toothbrush to release a piece of broccoli from Jupiter’s teeth!
Sago Mini Friends
What was your biggest challenge as you set out to adapt the property?
In the end, the toughest part of the job became the most rewarding for me. Together with Apple, our team had conceived an overarching curricular goal of showcasing “gratitude” in each episode. What a magnificent quality to inspire young viewers to adopt! The challenge was figuring out how to feature gratitude in ways other than characters simply saying the words, “thank you.” I worked really hard with the brilliant writing team, amazing songwriter, educational consultants and changemakers at Apple to figure out quite a variety of ways for the simple characters to express gratitude. In addition to using words that are relatives of “thank you,” our characters show their thankfulness with facial expressions, actions, body language and even tone of voice!
Sago Mini Friends
What about the visual influences and style of the show?
I adore how the colorful Sago Mini app showcases such an engaging simplicity bursting with visual charm. I and our extremely talented partners at Brown Bag Films were vigilant about paying homage to the app’s signature look and winning visual style. We carefully steered clear of reflections, shadows and depths of field that could even hint at a 3D technique. The crisp simplicity of the character and background art emulates a bygone style of flat 2D animation while giving the show a fresh and striking look.
Can you tell us a little bit about who produces the animation?
Spin Master partnered with the wildly talented team of artists at Brown Bag Films in Toronto. I was thrilled to work (virtually) side-by-side with the amazing 95-member team led by director Chad Hicks and art director Sladjana Samardzija. Harvey and friends were able to run, jump, roller-skate, sip tea with turkeys and dance to the tune emitted from a musical shoe thanks to Brown Bag’s expert use of Harmony.
Sago Mini Friends
Why do you think the original franchise is so popular?
As I mentioned before, the Sago Mini app sparks playful exploration, imagination and discovery with gorgeously simple design, adorable characters and tons of spontaneous whimsey. All of the games are designed so that young children can confidently explore on their own and really inspire open-ended play.
Which works are your biggest animation influences?
Clearly, I’m an enormous fan of simple visual storytelling. My greatest personal influences are the early animated short films featured on Sesame Street in the 1970s, the magnificently musical Schoolhouse Rock segments and just about every drawing and poem that ever fell out of Shel Silverstein’s pen.
Sago Mini Friends
What do you hope new audiences will get out of the show?
I know preschool viewers are growing up in a turbulent world, and my sincere hope for Sago Mini Friends is to be a ray of sunshine (or a bright and colorful rainbow spewed out of a singing unicorn’s horn) for them. I sincerely hope the show will playfully instill the importance of gratitude in a seamlessly delightful way, and I sincerely hope the show will spark imagination and emulate the five important Cs so beautifully showcased in the Sago Mini app: Curiosity, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Creative problem solving.
The first season of Sago Mini Friends premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 16.
Award-winning Israeli-born indie animator and teacher Gil Alkabetz has died, age 64. His friends confirmed the sad news on social media earlier today (Sept. 15). Alkabetz was best known for his witty, smart and thought-provoking animated shorts which commented on the follies of life, politics and human nature. Alkabetz, who took his own life, is survived by his wife Nurit Israeli and his son Mika, as his father, a brother, and a sister.
Born in 1957 in Kibutz Mashabei Sade in Israel, Alkabetz studied graphic design at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. His first animated short Bitzbutz, became a festival favorite quickly. During the mid to late 1980s, he worked at Jerusalem studio Frame by Frame as an animation director, as well as a freelance illustrator, comic artist, animation director and teacher. He made his second short Swamp at Kunstakademie in Stuttgart.
In 1995, he moved to Stuttgart, Germany, and worked together with studio Film Bilder on commissioned projects for SDR, Nickelodeon, and MTV, as well as on his popular festival favorite shorts Yankale (1996) and Rubicon (1997). In 2000, he founded his own studio, Sweet Home Studio, with his wife Nurit Israel in 2000. He also taught animation at Konrad Wolf University in Babelsberg, and offered workshops at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, Denver, and at the Lucerne School of Art and Design. He was also a guest professor at the Konrad Wolf Film University in Potsdam-Babelsberg.
His lovely 2005 short Morir de Amor, about two caged parrots reminiscing about past memories, was another huge festival hit and won top prizes around the world. Other successful shorts included the Ottawa Festival prize winner Swamp (1992), Travel to China (2002), Trim Time (2002) Wollmond (2009) The Da Vinci TimeCode (2009), 1+1 (2015) and One Stormy Night (2019). Alkabetz was also the animation designer on Tom Tykwer’s hugely influential and innovative 1998 German feature Run Lola Run.
Morir de Amor
“I wish I knew where my ideas come from, but I have no clue,” Alkabetz said in an interview with Film Court. “Every film comes from nothing and my experience doesn’t help me either. When I make a film, I can’t say I learned something for the next one. It’s like I always have to restart from zero. I feel every film I make is the first and the last one. I never believe I can make another.”
We send our condolences to Gil’s family and all his friends. The global animation community shares your grief. Funeral services will be held in Stuttgart. A public virtual memorial service is also being planned.
