Blue Ant & Stretchy Kick Off Production on Pre-K Animated Musical Series ‘Tralala’

Blue Ant Studios (Gary and His Demons), an international production studio and rights business, announced from Kidscreen Summit today that production has begun on the original animated preschool series Tralala (working title; 52 x 7’) with delivery slated for 2026. The series is a Canada/New Zealand international co-production with shared animation between Blue Ant Studios and Stretchy (Kiri & Lou) for CBC and Sky NZ.

“My colleague AJ Trauth discovered this delightful project at Kidscreen 2024 and we were immediately taken with its charm,” said Diane Rankin, EVP, Content Development and Commercial Strategy, Blue Ant Studios. “Playful, original and inclusive kids programming like Tralala is very much heartland territory for our Kids, Family & YA division, and we are so excited to be in production with Stretchy and our commissioning partners at CBC, and Sky NZ.”

The new show is created, written and directed by Harry Sinclair, best known for BAFTA-nominated stop-motion preschool series Kiri & Lou. Blue Ant Studios will begin partnership and pre-sales conversations at Kidscreen this week.

“In Tralala, Harry Sinclair has used his personal experiences as a dad to celebrate the bond between parent and child, while creating a warm and reassuring place that preschoolers will want to keep returning to,” added AJ Trauth, VP Development, Kids, Family & YA, Blue Ant Studios. “We are thrilled to now be in production, and as this magical world starts to come alive, we are excited to share it with other potential partners around the world.”

Synopsis: Musically named, Tralala is an inventive seven-year-old frog who lives an idyllic life with her dad, Sid, in their cozy blue country cottage, where commonplace domestic events unfurl into whimsical, imaginative adventures and sing-a-longs. Like most children her age, Tralala makes up songs and loves to play. For Sid and Tralala’s mother, co-parenting is just an easy and normal part of life.

As an only child, Tralala has created a fantastic inner world with close friends she has found in the garden, in her attic, and even under the sofa! These include Batty, a snappily dressed bat, Pasilio, a shy tree in her garden, and Hildegard, an eccentric talking hill where Tralala loves to play.

“We wanted to make a joyful series that celebrates the sheer delight of being a kid and brings positivity to families,” said Fiona Copland, Producer, Stretchy. “We’re grateful to Sky New Zealand and CBC for their commitment to this vision and have enjoyed collaborating with Blue Ant Studios, who love this project as much as we do. It’s exciting.”

Marie McCann, Senior Director, Children’s Content, CBC Kids, commented, “Canadian families will want to snuggle up to the cozy and musical family life that Tralala and Sid build in this creative and heartfelt little show.”

Joining the production team is Antony Elworthy, whose credits in addition to Kiri & Lou include lead animator on Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning Pinocchio and Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs; and Julianna Cox (Coraline, Creature Comforts, Shaun the Sheep) serves as animation director. New Zealand songwriter and musician Don McGlashan is the series songwriter & composer.

Mark J.W. Bishop, Matthew Hornburg, Diane Rankin, AJ Trauth and Donna Luke are executive producers for Blue Ant Studios. Harry Sinclair and Fiona Copland are executive producers for Stretchy. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports; Marie McCann is Senior Director, Children’s Content, CBC Kids; and Drew Mullin is Executive in Charge of Production, CBC Kids.

Tralala is being produced with support from Shaw Rocket Fund, The Independent Production Fund’s Cogeco TV Production Program, The Canada Media Fund, and NZ On Air. Blue Ant Studios holds global distribution rights.

‘Zog’ Animated Series Takes Wing with BBC Studios Global Distribution

BBC Studios Kids & Family have inked a deal to partner with Oscar nominated and BAFTA-winning Magic Light Pictures for international distribution rights to their animated TV series Zog. Based on the award-winning books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the series is a 52 x 11’ animated comedy adventure for four- to six-year olds about the lovable dragon, Zog.

“We’re delighted to be working with Magic Light Pictures who have a formidable reputation in the global animation industry,” said Cecilia Persson, Managing Director of BBC Studios Kids & Family. “It’s a partnership with a shared passion for creative excellence and for nurturing much loved characters and stories and bringing them to life. Zog is about caring for others, yourself and the amazing world around you so it is the perfect addition to our pre-school animation slate and we look forward to sharing it with audiences around the world.”

Building on Magic Light’s International Emmy-winning 2018 family special Zog and its 2020 sequel, Zog and the Flying Doctors, this CG-animated series follows Zog the dragon, Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout as they come together to care for the weird and wonderful inhabitants of their fantastical world.

The deal also includes all U.S. consumer products and licensing rights for the TV series.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with BBC Studios Kids & Family to bring Zog to audiences worldwide,” commented Magic Light’s Joint CEO Michael Rose. “Their superb global reach complements our own team’s expertise to ensure we can maximize opportunities for this fantastic new series. Pearl, Zog and Gadabout make a wonderfully comedic trio, captivating children and families with their imaginative adventures, and we look forward to working with the Kids & Family team to build Zog into a truly global brand.”

The deal excludes U.K. and Germany, where the series has been commissioned by BBC Children’s and Education and ZDF, respectively. Magic Light Pictures continues to represent all Zog licensing rights in U.K. and Europe alongside its global Gruffalo and Friends distribution and licensing program.

Published by Scholastic, over 4.5 million Zog books have sold worldwide and he is the most popular character created by Donaldson and Scheffler, after The Gruffalo. Magic Light distributes the Zog specials to over 180 countries and has created a wide array of bestselling consumer products including plush, apparel, dress-up, bedding, homeware and more.

MrBeast Lab & Moose Toys Launch New Animated Shorts by Stoopid Buddy

Moose Toys (moosetoys.com), in partnership with MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), the world’s most-subscribed YouTuber, announced the launch of animated shorts inspired by its blockbuster MrBeast Lab toy line. Created in collaboration with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the shorts underscore Moose Toys’ commitment to growing the MrBeast Lab brand’s footprint.

The animated shorts will debut in Fall 2025. The shorts will focus on a group of characters inspired by MrBeast Lab in their battle against the Shroud, a shadowy sinister force from another dimension. Using cutting-edge technology from the lab MrBeast secretly housed underneath his content studio, all sorts of Hybrid Beasts are created and modified for the ultimate battle for the fate of their world.

“This is the perfect moment to take the MrBeast Lab world to the next level with animation. It’s an exciting new way for fans to dive deeper into the adventure and experience the world like never before,” said Jeffrey Housenbold, CEO of MrBeast Industries.

The animated shorts will be executive produced by Stoopid Buddy’s Matthew Senreich, with Sam Levine serving as showrunner. Levine directed the animated feature DC League of Super-Pets for Warner Bros. and developed and wrote on Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph. Levine also co-created and served as showrunner for Disney’s animated series Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero.

Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, founded by Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, John Harvatine IV and Eric Towner, is best known for creating Robot Chicken, the longest running stop-motion show on television and a multi-Emmy Award winner. The studio’s other projects include Crossing Swords (Hulu), Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. (Hulu), Ultra City Smiths (AMC) and many others.

“MrBeast Lab is a natural fit with the Stoopid Buddy Stoodios’s experience and expertise. They even appreciated — no, wholeheartedly embraced — our signature unconventional approach. It was clear from the jump that Moose is fully invested in creating and delivering content to blow away MrBeast and MrBeast Lab fans,” said Senreich.

Levine added, “It’s super cool to be working on a project that brings us the #1 YouTuber and an amazingly innovative toy company like Moose. The cast of characters they created across the MrBeast Lab line gives us tons of inspiration to work with to blow this thing out of the water … or, out of the MrBeast Lab! Fans should prepare for some crazy explosive storylines.”

“We’re doubling down on our investment in MrBeast Lab, which has already been our most successful new launch ever,” said Paul Solomon, CEO, Moose Toys. “The dynamic, action-packed shorts will bring a whole new dimension to MrBeast Lab, extending the brand out of the toy aisle and creating a fresh way for kids to engage with the characters. With the experience, genius and irreverent storytelling that Stoopid Buddy Stoodios brings to the party, we have found the ideal partner to bring this to life.”

MrBeast Lab Mutators earned the #1 spot in U.S. sales in the entire Action Figure supercategory for the fall season, August – December 2024 1, and took home the top gaining property of the year for Action Figures in the Circana 2024 European Toy Awards. MrBeast Lab Swarms 2-figure and 5-figure Packs were the #1 and #2 top selling items in Action Figure Collectibles during the same period2. The results validate the innovative toymaker disrupting the norms and setting a new standard for the toy aisle by going all-in on a strategy built around a co-created product line with MrBeast.

52nd Annie Awards: ‘Wild Robot’ & ‘Arcane’ Sweep Categories, ‘Flow’ Wins Best Indie & Writing Prizes

The 52nd Annie Awards (annieawards.org), the animation industry’s premiere celebration of the craft presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, were held Saturday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Winners were revealed for 32 competition categories covering feature film, television, event programming, shorts, VFX, games and more.

Making good on its domination of the nominations announcement, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot won nine awards — the most possible, as two of its 10 nominations were both in the voice acting for feature film race. The critically acclaimed pic (which is also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature) came away with Best Feature, Direction (Chris Sanders), Character Animation, Character Design, Production Design, Voice Acting (for Lupita Nyong’o as ROZ) and more.

Latvian indie Flow (Dream Well / Take Five / Sacrebleu / distributed by Sideshow and Janus Films), which won the Golden Globe for animated feature and is currently nominated for two Oscar categories (animation and international feature), took the Best Feature – Independent prize, as well as Best Writing for director Gintz Zilbalodis and Matiss Kaza.

Netflix, which had the most nominations of any studio overall, enjoyed an epic comeback by video game-based drama Arcane (Riot / Fortiche), which swept the series categories and won all seven of the awards it was nominated for. The second and final season returns triumphant, having taken home nine awards out of nine nominations at the Annies three years ago.

Other multiple award-winners were the Netflix movie Orion and the Dark, produced by DreamWorks, which won Best Special Production and Writing for TV/Media; Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney Channel), winner of Best TV for Children and Character Design – TV/Media; and Pixar’s Dream Productions (Disney+), winner of the Limited Series and Voice Acting – TV/Media (for Paula Pell) categories.

Best Short went to Nina Gantz’s Oscar-nominated Wander to Wonder, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was awarded the prize for character animation in a live-action picture.

As previously announced, the Juried Awards were bestowed upon Aaron Blaise, Eunice Macaulay and Normand Roger (Winsor McCay Award); Women in Animation (June Foray Award); Alberto Menache (Ub Iwerks Award); and the book Directing at Disney: The Original Directors of Walt’s Animated Films (Special Achievement Award).

Among the unexpected surprises of the evening was a fire alarm that interrupted the show about 8:45 p.m., which led to the livestream being dropped and the attendees having to evacuate Royce Hall for a 15-minute “intermission.” According to the organizers, the interruption was the result of a fire alarm emergency.

During the event, ASIFA-Hollywood executive director Aubry Mintz  announced the launch of AnimAID, a fundraiser for the L.A. wildfire relief, with an initial goal of $225,000 to. The campaign be followed by an animation art auction in partnership with Sotheby’s, and additional events to raise a much higher goal of $5,000,000 for critical funds. After the ceremony, it was announced that more than $107,000 had been raised. To donate to this important cause, visit www.asifa-hollywood.org/animaid

Elyse Castro’s Animated Short ‘The Summoning’ Gets Graphic Novel Treatment from Oni

The Summoning Volume One: The Art of the Craft [Oni Press]

More than 6 million people around the world have watched the acclaimed animated short The Summoning, created by Elyse Castro and produced by FredFilms and Sony Pictures Animation.

This fall, Oni Press, a multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of comics and graphic novels since 1997, will publish The Summoning Volume One: The Art of the Craft, a cozy, coming-of-age tale based on the hit animated short and Castro’s dynamic graphic novel debut. A first look at the title was debuted today.

The first of three volumes, The Art of the Craft introduces a young witch named Claire and her kitty Familiar, Edgar, as they seek to hone her magikal abilities.

“For as long as I can remember, my imagination has been home to the whimsical, witchy world of Ridgewood, where Claire and Edgar experiment with magik, eat tasty treats and accidentally annoy their fluffy neighbor,” said Castro. “It’s nearly been eight  years since I was able to bring some of this world to you all through The Summoning cartoon short, and I’m ‘over the broom’ to share one of Claire and Edgar’s most important adventures with you all in The Art of the Craft. Please enjoy, and remember — do no harm.”

“I was immediately impressed by Elyse’s charming and rich world starring the gentle Claire and her best bud, the hilariously charming Edgar,” said Sierra Hahn, Editor in Chief. “The Summoning is a story of friendship and wonder, where Claire will face numerous challenges to overcome her own insecurities and discover what it truly means to be herself as an artist.”

Synopsis: In The Summoning, Claire specializes in the magik of manifestation, creating art pieces that are capable of coming to life! But she wants to do more, and to be more — so when she learns that a prestigious magikal institution called the Ridgewood Coven is accepting applicants for the first time in years, she’s determined to improve her skills and make her mark.

But first, Claire has to pass the Coven’s rigorous application process. With the help of her best friend Edgar, her curmudgeonly rabbit neighbor Flufftops, her magikal rival Swan, and host of new friends, Claire is going summon ghosts, battle trolls, and even befriend Death — but will it be enough to impress the Coven and secure a spot within their ranks? Or will Claire’s self-doubt keep her from manifesting magikal art ever again? Through it all, the sinister secrets of the closed-off Ridgewood Coven slowly come to light. Not everything is as it seems, and difficult decisions lie ahead: Will Claire be up to the task?

Elyse Castro is an accomplished artist and educator based in Montville, Australia. She began her journey studying fine arts and theater at university, which inspired her to begin an apprenticeship as a tattoo artist, specializing in intricate black and gray designs. After honing her craft, Castro returned to academia to train as an educator and now teaches Drama and Visual Art. In 2017, she created the animated short The Summoning, produced by FredFilms and Sony Pictures Animation. Her passion for storytelling and illustration has culminated in her debut graphic novel, The Summoning Volume One: The Art of the Craft.

The Summoning Volume One: The Art of the Craft will be conjured onto shelves on October 7.

Apple TV+ Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of ‘Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown’!

Enjoy the tender-hearted holiday with the Emmy-nominated Peanuts animated special, Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, streaming only on Apple TV+.

A must-watch Valentine’s Day staple for the last 50 years, the 1975 classic is among Apple’s many Peanuts offerings, which also include A Charlie Brown Valentine; It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown; There’s No Time for Love, Charlie Brown and Emmy nominated You’re in Love, Charlie Brown.

Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown

It’s Valentine’s Day and hearts are fluttering at school. Charlie Brown is waiting for his valentines to start rolling in, while Linus buys a present for his teacher Miss Othmar — which Sally mistakes as a gift from her Sweet Babboo.

A Charlie Brown Valentine

Warm and fuzzy feelings fill the air as an inspired Snoopy writes poems about Valentine’s Day. Charlie Brown tries to impress the Little Red-Haired Girl. Sally and Lucy hope to get cards from their crushes. Peppermint Patty asks “Chuck” to the dance.

It’s Your First Kiss Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown gets to escort the homecoming queen to the dance and, much to his surprise, it’s the Little Red-Haired Girl.

There’s No Time for Love, Charlie Brown

School can be hard enough, and falling in love during class can cause so many complications.  While Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Lucy, and Franklin all try to sort out their assignments, “Chuck” realizes his “anxieties have anxieties.”  Meanwhile, the gang tries to get a good grade on their “field trip” report. Peppermint Patty and Marcie come to terms with their true feelings and affection for Charlie Brown while accidentally diverting him to the wrong “museum.” Charlie Brown continues to be a straight “blah” student, but he does get a good night kiss.

You’re in Love, Charlie Brown

On the last few days of school, Charlie Brown tries a variety of ways to meet his crush: the Little Red-Haired Girl.

Consuming Consequences: Anémona Studio’s Henedy Macias Discusses Her Animated Oxfam Spot ‘Inequality Destroys Everything’

Mexico City-based Anémona Studio recently completed an animated short film for Oxfam, titled Inequality Destroys Everything. Inspired by the beloved works of Studio Ghibli, the short used 2D animation techniques to address the topic of inequality. We had the chance to talk to the short’s director Henedy Macias about this inspiring project:

Animation Magazine: Can you tell us a bit of background about your studio?

Henedy Macias [c/o Anemona Studio]

Henedy Macias: We are a Mexico-based animation studio with over 15 years of experience. Specializing in storytelling, 2D classical animation, 3D and visual effects, we take pride in delivering creative, high-quality work in both advertising and, more recently, animated series.

We have collaborated with almost all major advertising agencies in Mexico and recently won an Effie Latin Award. In 2023, we proudly represented Mexico at Annecy’s Partner Pitches with our original animated series.

How did the Oxfam spot project come about?

This short film was created for Oxfam Mexico, the final client, with Montalvo as the communication agency and Anémona Studio as the animation studio that made it all possible. Oxfam Mexico was looking for an animation style to bring their story to life. At Anémona, we suggested a classical 2D style inspired by anime, drawing influence from the surreal universes crafted by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. We took this spark of creativity and gave it our unique twist, resulting in this captivating short film.

OXFAM - Inequality Destroys Everything

What were the main goals of this project?

For Oxfam and Montalvo, the goal was to create a piece that would make a strong impact on inequality, defining it as the disproportionate distribution of resources. They aimed to showcase the voracity of consumption and its consequences.

For us, the focus was on ensuring the narrative flowed seamlessly while delivering the highest quality animation, carefully crafting every detail to reinforce the message and enhance the visuals.

OXFAM - Inequality Destroys Everything

How many people work on the animation and which tools were used?

We were a team of 17 people working exclusively on this short film. Toon Boom was our primary tool for frame-by-frame animation and rotoscopy, while for the 3D violin shots, we used Blender.

What were you most pleased about the final project:

It’s rare to have a client willing to embrace anime for such a bold idea, using strong symbolism to depict inequality and the exploitation of natural resources.

I was especially happy to adapt the script while preserving the original concept, carefully shaping the rhythm of the story. Later, we brought it to life with a beautiful aesthetic inspired by Hayao Miyazaki, a combination that was deeply appreciated by the entire team. This project also helped define and leave a mark on our own narrative style.

OXFAM - Inequality Destroys Everything

As you set out to direct the Oxfam spot, what were your biggest challenges?

Creating anime was a challenge, as it is not widely used in Mexico — especially in projects for nonprofit organizations. Beyond that, maintaining the intensity of the narrative and building tension to highlight the severity of the situation required increasing the complexity of the animation itself. Balancing both aspects was a huge responsibility, but it was also a deeply rewarding experience for the entire team.

What other projects is the studio working on?

We are currently developing our original animated series, Mambo and Domingo, a preschool show about two friends who spend their free time exploring the outdoors. Together, they create endless and unexpected adventures in their shared backyard and around Toronto, Canada.

OXFAM - Inequality Destroys Everything

What is your take on the current animation climate in your country?

Surviving in the industry has always been challenging. Like in many other countries, animation in Mexico is not taken seriously enough in film production, which is why most of our work has traditionally been focused on advertising. Unfortunately, today it is even harder to find credibility in the processes required for high-quality production and results.

The perception that animators, illustrators, character designers and script writers are no longer essential is growing. However, we increasingly find ourselves fixing AI-generated characters or solving creative problems that AI alone cannot yet handle.

Negotiating against low budgets is a daily challenge, but we see this as an opportunity for small and medium-sized studios to shine — not only through quality production but through strong, original ideas. At Anémona Studio, we are investing everything into our original animated series, Mambo and Domingo, which has already caught the attention of major networks. We firmly believe that developing our own content is the key to surviving in this new landscape and preserving jobs in the industry.

ASIFA-Hollywood and Animation Industry Leaders Unite for AnimAID Fire Relief Fundraiser and Animation Art Auction

ASIFA-Hollywood has joined forces with leadership, filmmakers, artists and colleagues from across the animation industry to provide much needed relief for animation families who have been deeply affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Dubbed AnimAID, this fundraising campaign will kick off at ASIFA-Hollywood’s 52nd Annual Annie Awards this Saturday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall and will continue through the coming months. Their goal is to raise $5,000,000 to lend support to over 60 animation industry families who have lost or been displaced from their homes.

“So many people have volunteered their time, energy and passion, it is truly inspiring,” said AnimAID Chairperson Sandra Rabins. “This incredible community prides itself on collaboration, from the work we do to bring joy to people of all ages around the world to teaming up to lend a hand when our colleagues are in need. The display of generosity we have seen from every corner of the industry has been truly moving, and with AnimAID we plan to harness that kindness to help get those affected back up on their feet.”

Animation studios supporting AnimAID include: DreamWorks Animation; Illumination & Illumination Studios Paris; Mikros Animation; Netflix; Paramount Animation & Nickelodeon Animation; Sony Pictures Animation; Sony Pictures Imageworks; Skydance Animation; the animation studios of The Walt Disney Company, including Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Disney Television Animation, 20th Television Animation, Marvel Animation and Lucasfilm Animation; Warner Bros. Animation; Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and more.

With the full support of animation studios big and small, AnimAID will host an auction in partnership with Sotheby’s that will include among its offerings original artwork from the production of animated features and television series, including: physical maquettes, artwork, cels, posters, signed memorabilia and more.

Sotheby’s will make these one-of-a-kind pieces of animation history available for auction in the Spring, and the benefit will be accessible via an online portal and be made available to the general public.

“Art is at the center of what we do in animation,” said AnimAID Board Director Don Hahn, “and what many people don’t realize is that there are hundreds of pieces of original art made during the production of an animated feature that rarely see the light of day. We are looking to tap into those archives to resurface some of that art — in addition to new, original pieces from renowned animation artists — in an effort to provide relief for those affected by the fires.”

AnimAID and the animation industry invite you to join this major effort to help rebuild lives, show support for families in need, and restore the strength of a professional community that has entertained the planet for decades.

AnimAID is an unprecedented fundraising campaign in support of our colleagues in the animation industry who have lost so much in the recent fires. Formed in collaboration with ASIFA-Hollywood, the fiscal sponsor of AnimAID, industry co-workers and animation studios, big and small, our campaign premieres at this year’s Annie Awards on February 8.

In the spring, AnimAID is partnering with Sotheby’s for a prestigious online auction of animation art, followed by other events to come.

Clermont-Ferrand Awards Animated Shorts ‘Eureka!,’ ‘Puppet and the Whale’

France’s Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (clermont-filmfest.org) announced the winners of its second edition of partner prizes on Thursday. The awardees include two animated shorts and an immersive VR experience.

The winners of the official juried competitions and audience prizes will be announced at the festival’s closing ceremony on Saturday, February 8. The Grand Prix films from the international and national competitions qualify for Academy Awards consideration in the Live-Action and Animated Short Film categories.

Roberto Catani’s Pinocchio-inspired short Il Burattino e la Balena (The Puppet and the Whale) out of France won the SACD Award for Best French-Speaking Animation. Hand-drawn on paper, the dialog-free film is produced by Withstand (Davide Ferazza and Alessandro Giorgio) and Miyu Productions (Emmanuel-Alain Raynal and Pierre Baussaron) and tells “the story of a puppet that does not become a child.” The short screened in competition at the Venice International Film Festival last September.

Another animated short came out a Partner Prize winner, with Kris Borghs’ Eureka! (Belgium) winning the Canal+ Kids Award.

Produced by Tom Van Gestel at Fabrique Fantastique, the non-dialog CG comedy follows an extraterrestrial duo crossing the universe to share technological insights with less brilliant minds. On one peculiar planet, things don’t quite go as planned…

Also worth mentioning is the VR experience In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats (U.K.), created by Darren Emerson, which won the Best XR Film Award by Evaveo. The project previously won Location-Based Experience of the Year at the 2023 VR Awards.

Produced by East City Films, the interactive adventure takes audiences into a multi-sensory journey back to 1989, immersing them in the euphoric and revolutionary rave scene at the heart of the Acid House Movement.

Geralt, Re-Animated: ‘The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep’ Director Kang Hei Chul Dives Into the New Neflix Movie

The Witcher series, having received great acclaim in the literary, video game and live-action spheres, is expanding its presence in the animation world. Following up on 2021’s Nightmare of the Wolf, a spinoff from the Netflix show, is Sirens of the Deep — a stand-alone tale based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story and centered on Witcher hero Geralt of Rivia.

Connective tissue between both animated Witcher features may be limited on-screen but is plentiful in the background. For both films, Netflix enlisted the help of Studio MIR, the South Korean animation house whose recent work on Marvel’s X-Men ’97 and Star Wars: Visions has shown its capacity to deliver high-quality work with big IP. Directing the film is Kang Hei Chul, a storyboard artist on Nightmare of the Wolf who’s now in the hot seat.

“Being part of such a renowned franchise was an incredible stroke of luck and a deeply rewarding experience that I thoroughly enjoyed,” he tells Animation Magazine. “Shortly after that project wrapped, I founded my own studio, Studio IAM, and continued to collaborate with Studio MIR. Directing a feature film had always been a lifelong dream of mine, and they thankfully gave me that opportunity in the form of Sirens of the Deep. It felt like destiny had invited me back into the world of The Witcher.”

Song of the Sirens: When mutant monster hunter Geralt (voiced by Doug Cockle) is hired to probe seaside village attacks, he discovers an age-old conflict between humans and merpeople that threatens war between kingdoms.

A Fresh Vision

With the universe of the games and show well established, it was key for Kang to bring a fresh perspective to Sirens of the Deep, even beyond what was present in the initial short story. “We wanted to make new grounds purely based on the script [by Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin], but we believe the overarching values of the franchise were loud and clear,” he adds. “It’s ultimately the story of connection, where our characters who once felt destined to solitude discover each other to find redemption and hope, which is deeply reflective of the reality we experience in our lives. It became our source of inspiration and where we started with this film.”

“The live-action and animated versions of Geralt are essentially the same person, but I believe each medium required a distinct approach to his depiction and emphasis.”

Sirens of the Deep focuses on a conflict between humans and a race of merpeople, which Kang saw as a chance to comment on real-world attitudes. “If there was one new theme I wanted to explore, it would be the idea of inviting the audience to connect emotionally with beings vastly different from humans and, through their perspective, gain a renewed understanding of humanity,” he says. “This theme becomes more pronounced through the relationship between Sh’eenaz [merpeople] and Agloval [humans], and their love, conflict and sacrifice.”

More new ground was broken simply by depicting The Witcher’s famous main character in a new medium. “This was actually the first time we’ve shown Geralt in animation,” Kang says. “We had to create Geralt from the ground up to adapt him to the animation world. The live-action and animated versions of Geralt are essentially the same person, but I believe each medium required a distinct approach to his depiction and emphasis. In the live-action series, Geralt’s internal struggles and his human side are the focus. He is constantly wrestling with his fate and responsibilities, often cornered to make difficult choices in complex situations. The series delves into his emotional experiences, relationships and the sense of isolation he feels within human society. His relationships with Ciri and Yennefer highlight his softer, more reliable side, allowing the audience to connect with him on a deeply human level.”

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep [Netflix]

Sirens of the Deep focuses on Geralt’s identity as a legendary Witcher. “We amplified the use of fantastical and dramatic visual elements to showcase his fighting skills to capture his Witcher side,” explains the director. “The film is set in a mystical underwater world where Geralt battles powerful monsters. Naturally, we wanted the animated version of Geralt to look more mythical and majestic. We wanted to highlight his composed judgment, strategic brilliance and dynamic combat skills. Animation is an excellent medium for stylizing fantasy elements and action-packed sequences, elevating the visuals beyond what live action could achieve.”

Because fans of the franchise are already familiar with Geralt’s appearance as depicted in the games and live-action series, the project couldn’t change it too much without risking a disconnect with the audience. “We kept the essence of his iconic costume and hairstyle while adjusting his face and body figure for animation,” says Kang. “Our aim was to reflect his tough, aggressive personality through the character design.”

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep [Netflix]

The film’s oceanside setting also required Kang to move away from The Witcher’s typically dark mood. “We realized that the darker approach limited our ability to capture the unique atmosphere of the ocean,” he explains. “To bridge the existing franchise with the new film, we drew inspiration from various myths, ranging from Eastern European sea legends to the Greek tales of sirens. We wanted to convey the mysterious and perilous beauty of the ocean through elements like shimmering reflections on water, the glow of bioluminescent sea creatures and vibrant, dreamlike colors set against the dark depths of the ocean.

“Animation gave us the creative flexibility to explore richer, more dynamic compositions, and the shift to a surreal, ethereal aesthetic was key to capturing the haunting allure of the sirens and the sea,” says Kang. “This approach extended to character designs as well. The sirens were not simply depicted as beautiful beings but as enigmatic and menacing. Their appearance and movements were inspired by the anatomy of sea creatures, blended with our artists’ imagination to create something unique. Ultimately, the visual style of Sirens of the Deep was an effort to combine the weight and depth of the existing Witcher universe with the mystique of ocean legends to deliver a fresh and unique experience to audiences.”

Animating a Complex World

Studio MIR’s successes with franchise projects requiring massive set pieces, often with a 2D look, are plentiful. Line producer Goun Choi explains how MIR’s pipeline is designed with this in mind, “We established a unique pipeline by integrating our CGI subsidiary into the traditional 2D workflow. Nowadays, utilizing CG is essential, even for 2D animation titles. The role and significance of 3D animation have grown dramatically since the previous film, Nightmare of the Wolf. Coordinating the 2D, 3D and compositing departments to create a highly intricate pipeline was definitely a challenge. In retrospect, our pipeline has evolved with each project we take on. I can’t even begin to imagine the level of complexity our next project will bring.”

Having worked on two films in the Witcher universe, Kang still finds himself drawn to Sapkowski’s creation. “It speaks to our increasingly polarized reality, where diverse biases and values collide, but what sets this world apart is its refusal to simplify morality into black-and-white terms. Instead, it invites us to step back and ask ourselves, ‘What choice would I make if I were in their shoes?’ We can imagine ourselves in the place of Witchers, shunned by the very people they protect despite risking their lives to hunt humanity’s enemies. To make matters worse, they are manipulated like pawns in a chess game by those in power. Yet Geralt stands resolute, bringing hope to others while navigating a world filled with corruption and villainy.”

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep premieres on Netflix on February 11.

Disney Animator & Producer Joe Hale Dies Age 99

Joe Hale, a longtime animator, artist and producer at Disney, died January 29 at his home in Atascadero, California of natural causes at age 99. His wife of nearly 60 years, Beverly Hale, shared the news of his passing with The Hollywood Reporter.

Born June 4, 1925 in Newland Village, Indiana, Hale was one of nine children. Like many animators of his generation, he enlisted in the military and served during World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps, fighting at the Battle of Iwo Jima. After his service, he attended the Michigan Academy of Arts and then graduated form the Lukits Academy of Fine Arts in L.A.

Hale spent 35 years at Disney feature animation, getting his start as an in-betweener on Alice in Wonderland (1951), before being assigned as an assistant animator under Ollie Johnston, one of the studio’s famous Nine Old Men. He worked as an animator and layout artist on many of the studio’s enduring hand-drawn classics, including Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), The Jungle Book (1967) and The Fox and the Hound (1981), as well as the live-action/animation hybrid features Mary Poppins (1964), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) and Pete’s Dragon (1977).

Hale applied his hybrid production skills, first honed on the midcentury television programs The Wonderful World of Disney and Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, to effects animation on live-action features  including Return from Witch Mountain (1978), The Cat from Outer Space (1978), The Watcher in the Woods (1980) and The Black Hole (1979), for which he was nominated for an Oscar for special effects alongside Peter Ellenshaw and his son Harrison Ellenshaw, Art Cruickshank, Eustace Lycett and Danny Lee.

In 1980, Hale became a producer for the first time on the ill-fated The Black Cauldron, charged with assembling the five Chronicles of Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander into an overarching story and overseeing a 300-artist staff on the dark fantasy adaptation.

The project had been in the works for seven years and racked up a $44 million budget. Then studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ordered a re-edit against Hale’s wishes when some young test screeners found a few scenes unsettling, delaying the release from Christmas 1984 to July of 1985. The film grossed less than $22 million. Hale and his team began developing an adaptation of T.H. White’s Mistress Masham’s Repose (a sequel to Gulliver’s Travels), but Katzenberg didn’t bite and Hale was dismissed in 1986, along with his staff.

According to his wife, Hale avoided Hollywood after his long Disney career, but remained creatively active as a sculptor.

Hale was inducted as a Disney Legend by the National Fantasy Fan Club in 2008.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Beverly; son, Steven; and two grandchildren.

PBS KIDS Powers Up with Game-Themed ‘Skillsville’ Animated Series

PBS KIDS is about to level up its children’s animation lineup with Skillsville, a new series created by Twin Cities PBS (TPT) which aims to encourage kids ages 4-8 to “power up” the skills they need for their future success by depicting the benefits of video games. The series premieres March 3 in English and Spanish.

Taking its cue from some of the best elements that gaming has to offer, the show centers on three best friends — Cora (ParCora), Dev (Devosaurus) and Rae (Racer Rae) — who love to play together, whether it’s on the playground or in their favorite digital game, Skillsville. With each episode, young viewers will enter a world of career possibilities with the goal to hone their life skills, including self-regulation and strategies to help them to feel, focus, organize, remember and think differently.

“Games aren’t just fun, they can also provide learning-rich opportunities for kids — letting them make mistakes, experiment through trial and error, pursue their goals, and remain persistent,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President & General Manager, PBS KIDS. “Skillsville will encourage kids to explore these fundamental skills in a variety of relatable situations, which will support them in building a strong foundation for achieving success in school, in the future career path they choose, and in life.”

Skillsville uses something kids already love — gaming — to help them practice essential life skills that can shape their future,” said Carol-Lynn Parente, Executive Producer and Co-Creator, TPT. “Our goal is to empower young viewers with simple, effective self-regulation strategies as the tools they can use to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams. By combining the fun of career exploration with practical skills like pausing to think, planning, organizing and persevering through setbacks, Skillsville inspires kids to see themselves as problem-solvers and change-makers who can lean on their unique strengths to help their community.”

Each episode of Skillsville begins with Cora, Dev and Rae in the real world and focuses on one of the five life skills (feel, focus, organize, remember and think differently) they further cultivate in the game world. Once in the game, the characters appear as their avatars and summon Scout, a dog with dragonfly wings who flutters in and sniffs out trouble and supports them as they complete challenges. The players then work together and learn useful strategies to complete the task, win the game, and earn career-related badges. When they’re back in the real world, Cora, Dev and Rae use the skills and strategies they’ve acquired in Skillsville, which are essential in helping people of all ages to learn, work and manage the activities of daily living.

Logical and level-headed, Cora is a gamer through and through, and she’s always ready with a plan to solve even the toughest game challenge, even if she struggles to trust her instincts. With his vivid imagination and playful personality, Dev is an out-of-the-box thinker who creatively works his way through any problem he encounters, though he sometimes struggles to focus and manage his emotions. Born with spina bifida, Rae uses a wheelchair, and her adventurous spirit and swift action help her to tackle any challenge she encounters in Skillsville, where she also learns how to slow down so she can think things through. When Cora’s game designer mom asks them to test out her new virtual reality role-playing game, Skillsville, the three pals get to take their playtime to a whole new level.

In the game of Skillsville, players get to manage their own virtual city, populated by tiny residents called Beeples. By trying out various jobs, the gamers help keep the city running smoothly, and when things go wrong, it’s up to the three friends to develop a creative solution. They become paper plane air traffic controllers, lemonade stand entrepreneurs, rollercoaster train engineers, in addition to many more roles — learning how different jobs benefit the city of Skillsville and the Beeples who live there. And since players get to customize their very own avatars, the trio can let their inner selves shine through — Cora becomes Parkora, a parkour warrior; Dev transforms into Devosaurus, an earth-stomping dinosaur; and Rae fulfills her need for speed as Racer Rae. Of course, even the best gamers need help sometimes, especially in a world as unpredictable as Skillsville, so Scout is always ready to help troubleshoot any problem.

In addition to new episodes, Skillsville will include four upcoming games on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Games app, as well as learning resources available on PBS KIDS for Parents and PBS LearningMedia.

Skillsville is produced by Twin Cities PBS (Hero Elementary, SciGirls) and is created by an Emmy-winning team (Sesame Street, Hero Elementary) that includes executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente, head writer Christine Ferraro and creative director Eric Peterson. The series is animated by Sphere Media Productions (Curious George, Arthur, F Is for Family), with Judith Beauchemin and Marianne Culbert as supervising producers, and Olivier Migneron and Chris Fazio as series directors.

The show’s team of contributing writers includes TV writer and producer (NCIS) and adaptive athlete Katherine Beattie, Gemini Award-winning and WGC Award-nominated Karen Moonah (Iggy Arbuckle, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about That!) and writing fellow Brianna Ishibashi (TPT, Sesame Workshop, Fred Rogers Productions).

Series staff at Twin Cities PBS include Momo Hayakawa, Ph.D., Project Director and Managing Director of Child Development; Dennis Ramirez, Ph.D., Digital Program Manager; and Bryce Becker, Ph.D., Research Manager. Advisors include Jennifer Curry, Ph.D., NCC, Vira Franklin and James R. Eagles Professor in the College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University; Yuko Munakata, Ph.D. Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California, Davis; and Lead Universal Design for Learning advisor, LaVant Consulting.

This series is funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the U.S. Department of Education with the goal of enhancing workforce readiness for young children. For additional content and conversation, follow Skillsville on InstagramPinterest, Facebook and Medium.
