Musa Brooker of Six Point Harness on Creating Superhero Animals for ‘The Boys’

Among the many cool surprises of the third season of The Boys was the revelation of Black Noir’s (Nathan Mitchell) imaginary cartoon friends, which help him face his Soldier Boy fears in the seventh and eighth episodes of the Prime Video series. Six Point Harness’s creative director Musa Brooker, who oversaw the animation of these 2D toons for the live-action series, was kind enough to chat with us about the making of Buster Beaver and the season’s other unexpected animated delights:

Musa Booker
Musa Booker

Animation Magazine: Congrats on the great job you and your team did with Noir’s animated buddies this season. Can you tell us how Six Point Harness got involved with this project?

Musa Booker: We had never worked with the team at The Boys before. We started talking to them about a year ago. I am an old school comic-book nerd from way back. I’ve been collecting comic books since I was in fifth grade, and I was a fan of the show even before I knew we were in contention to work on it. Hearing that we could possibly work on it was very exciting. I wrote my thoughts on the comics and the show and how we might approach it and, obviously, they liked our take and we got the job. We did close to eight minutes of animation spread over the two episodes.

How long did it take for you to do it?

We started in the late summer of 2021 doing designs. They have to plan so far ahead on a show like that, especially during the pandemic. Of course, it’s a very secretive project, so we could only see the pages of the scripts that we were working on.

We first started with the character designs. Showrunner Eric Kripke had a very clear vision of what he wanted for the show, which was Scorsese-style violence meets cute, cuddly, Disney-like characters. So, we thought about designing characters that were friendly and comfortable — and, as violent as the show is, there was a need for them to connect with both the audience and with Noir. Over the process of a couple of months, we designed the characters and we dove into boarding.

How many characters did you have to design, which tools did you use for animation and how many people were on your team?

What was complicated and challenging was the characters had to look like their real-world cartoon mascot selves, but we also had to redesign them in the scenes that they were playing superheroes, so we had at least two versions of every character. For design purposes we used Photoshop, and animation-wise we use Toon Boom Harmony and Storyboard Pro for storyboarding and After Effects for compositing. We had an in-house crew and we had some vendors that worked with us on the project. Between production, artists, designers, animators, we had about 20-25 people working here at the L.A. studio. We also work remotely with some animators all over the world.

You had done similar work like this before where you mixed animation with live-action backgrounds and actors. How was this different from other shows?

There has been a such a long history of great movies and shows that have mixed animation with live-action and I had done a little bit of that myself. I think what was different was the amount of VFX that we knew would be incorporated in the final product. We delivered the animation and then, they went into the world.

We had to think about designing everything from scratch for these characters, with obvious references and nods to different things in the show. I think the challenge was the complexity of the effects side of things. We pitched a couple of different things and Eric had some good ideas on what he wanted things to look like. It was a great collaboration in that way. He had a vision and then he allowed us to plus that vision. We worked with the in-house VFX team on that show and then they farmed out the jobs to different vendors.

Black Noir’s Imaginary cartoon friends in ‘The Boys’ were inspired by Disney characters, classic comics and mascots.
Black Noir’s Imaginary cartoon friends in ‘The Boys’ were inspired by Disney characters, classic comics and mascots.

When it comes to great shows or movies that have mixed live action and animation, certain projects like Who Framed Roger Rabbit always come to mind. Did you have any standard-bearers in mind as you were working on this show?

There is such an amazing history of these kinds of projects — they are as old as the animation genre itself, anything from Out of the Inkwell to Disney’s Alice Comedies. When I was younger, Pete’s Dragon was a huge hit for me, and of course Roger Rabbit was a touchstone for me. I think I already knew I wanted to work in animation when that movie came out when I was in junior high/high school. That was mind-blowing for me. The original Mary Poppins and the more recent Mary Poppins Returns were big influences, as well as Disney’s Enchanted, which I really loved. We looked at a number of those things.

Because they were cute and cuddly animal superheroes, I dug into my comic-book nerd-dom and was referencing things like Spider-Ham and Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew. All of that stuff we added to the mix and we came up with something that we hope people will enjoy.

What were some of the things you loved about this project?

I love how impactful these two episodes are on the story of Noir. I’ve been a fan of the show and have been watching it since season one, and it’s really revelatory about the character of Black Noir and that was very interesting to me. The 12-year-old me is over the moon right now.

In a lot of ways, it was a dream project — working with funny animal cartoon characters, working with superheroes and working on a show that I love and working with Eric. We had a great team. A young man named DeLon Warren, who was a former student of mine at USC,  has been with the studio for a bit. He designed many of the characters and he also boarded the entire sequence, and he was an animator, too. AnnMarie Roberts was another integral part of our team. She started out as animation director for the team, and when unfortunately I had to take some time away from the production due to my father’s passing, she stepped up as co-director, and she’s such an amazing talent.

One of the reasons I love superheroes is because of my father. He was a painter and a fine artist, but he also loved superheroes and comics of the Golden Age of Comics. He was a big fan of Shazam! and Superman. I think his love of comics got transferred to me, and I know he is looking down and hopefully, he’s very happy with what we did on this project.

As well as their cuter cartoon forms, the Six Point Harness team has to created Vought superhero versions of the characters for Noir's traumatic flashbacks.
As well as their cuter cartoon forms, the Six Point Harness team has to created Vought superhero versions of the characters for Noir’s traumatic flashbacks.

I’m sure your dad must have been very proud of everything that you have achieved in animation. What other projects are you working on these days?

There are some really exciting things that we’re working on that I wish I could tell you about, but I can’t speak about them yet. At the studio, we just released that I personally didn’t work on, but it was an animated campaign for New Balance sneakers with Donald Glover. It’s a really fun project. We are also working on The Great Wolf Pack with animation director Chris Bailey, a series of shorts and a feature based on characters from the Great Wolf resorts around the country. They’re looking great.

What is your take on the state of animation as we are smack in the middle of a crazy busy summer?

The industry ebbs and flows for certain, and it looks like we are in a little bit of a transition right now. I think the entertainment industry as a whole was a bit more reliant on animation in the beginning of the pandemic, because live-action production had slowed down. But the thing that is so wonderful right now is that there has never ever been more animation produced in the history of the medium — everything from the streamers, to the web, to features, games, shorts, everywhere. Animation is a perennial part of the entertainment landscape and a vital art form.

For me, it’s exciting since I spent so much of my earlier career in stop-motion, which I love. Being waist deep in 2D it’s still a new and exciting thing for me. At the studio, we are also venturing into 3D, as well as mixed media. There so are so many opportunities and media where animation is being produced all over the world.

Of course, one of the exciting things for me is to see more inclusion and diversity — both in characters in front of the cameras and behind the cameras.

Six Point Harness’ work appears in Season 3 of The Boys, now streaming on Prime Video. Learn more about the studio at sixpointharness.com.

Lost Richard Williams Short ‘Sailor and the Devil’ Rediscovered

It’s always exciting when a rare or lost cartoon is uncovered and brought back to life for a new generation of animation aficionados to enjoy! We recently heard from U.K. animator Daniel Aguirre Hansell, who was instrumental in bringing home a piece of mid-century animation history.

As Aguirre Hansell explained: “I was looking at your article from 17th August, 2019 about the passing of Richard Williams, which mentioned his 1967 short film Sailor and the Devil, co-directed by him and Errol Le Cain. Unsure if you are aware, but Sailor has been lost for decades, the only existing version being an incomplete VHS copy of an American broadcast. However, thanks to my detective work I rediscovered the film’s original negative material last September.

“With the help of Maximilian Le Cain (Errol’s son) and Jez Stewart (BFI Curator of Animation), the material was successfully released to us. It has been in the permanent care of the BFI since January,” he added. “We hope it gets restored in the near future.”

British-Singaporean artist, illustrator and director Le Cain (Victoria’s Rocking Horse) joined Richard Williams Animation as a neophyte animator in 1965, lending his stylistic artistry to the unfinished feature The Thief and the Cobbler. In production from 1966-67, Sailor and the Devil was a children’s short conceived as a test for Le Cain’s burgeoning animation talent. The film made a splash at the Locarno Film Festival, Annecy Festival and as part of a later Williams retrospective at Goteborg. Unfortunately, a studio fire destroyed RWA’s copies.

Aguirre Hansell  began hunting for Sailor and the Devil in March of 2021, reaching out to film archives around the world as well as to Maximilian Le Cain and Davide and  Sergio Simonetti who helped animate the short. Through a former employee of color processor Kay Labs named Clive Noakes, the toon sleuth followed a trail of acquisitions to Technicolor, which soon confirmed its possession of original negatives.

You can learn more about this unique film and Aguirre Hansell’s extraordinary mission to bring it to light on the animator’s website.

Disability Representation Means Business for Ireland’s Kavaleer Productions

Accomplished Dublin-based animation studio Kavaleer Productions is pitching itself to U.S. content production, distribution and streaming communities as an ideal partner to better represent people with disabilities on-screen. Through the development of pioneering content, they are enabling these communities to educate, expand and engage their audiences while growing their businesses.

With more than 15% of the United States population counting themselves as part of the disabled community, the leaders at Kavaleer Productions consider this to be an issue of relatability as much as representation.

Led by CEO Andrew Kavanagh and Managing Director Gary Timpson, Kavaleer has a successful track record of partnering with U.S. businesses, including work with Nick Jr. on Kiva Can Do! and with Watch Next Media and Cloudco Entertainment on Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese. The studio prides itself on delivering innovative animations such as the pioneering media literacy show Alva’s World and Paper Owl Films’ Pablo, which broke considerable new ground by having a main character on the autism spectrum.

Kavaleer  is backed in the U.S. by Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government agency for developing Irish businesses in International markets.

The studio’s new show, Adam Loves Adventure!, is in pre-production and stars Adam King, an inspiring and charming seven-year-old boy, his trusted wheelchair, Speedy, and Bubby, the rabbit! Adam King is widely considered a national treasure ever since an appearance on the national broadcaster’s annual festive Late Late Toy Show won him a broad and warm following that extended to the Irish diaspora and beyond — he counts U.S. President Joe Biden and retired astronaut, Chris Hadfield, among his well-wishers and followers!

“The disabled community is the largest minority with the least on-screen representation. To achieve broader awareness and greater empathy for people with disabilities, the stories need to be told to larger audiences, and we’ve demonstrated there is interest and appetite for this content,” Kavanagh explained. “Now with Adam Loves Adventure!, we have the opportunity to create great content with an exceptional young man and share his warmth and example with global audiences!”

Echoing this sentiment, Niamh O’Donnell, Enterprise Ireland Trade Development Executive, noted, “Adam Loves Adventure! is an exceptional coupling of character, creativity, and commercial opportunity. I am confident Adam Loves Adventure! will be another successful episode in Ireland’s burgeoning animation storyline.”

Kavanagh and his team are working with Enterprise Ireland in the U.S. to build partnerships with finance and distribution entities in this market. Interest is strong, and the group expects strategic additions to backers that include Screen Ireland, RTÉ, Ireland’s national television and radio broadcaster, and The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Kavaleer Productions will attend the upcoming Kidscreen Summit in Miami (July 18) to meet with potential partners for Adam Loves Adventure!

Enterprise Ireland is Ireland’s innovation agency and the venture capital arm of the Irish government. It is one of the world’s largest seed-stage VCs by deal flow and is dedicated to supporting Irish start-ups in their global ambitions. Through a network of more than 40 international offices, Enterprise Ireland supports a portfolio of 1300 startups with over $260M in annual revenue.

Now in their 20th year of business, Kavaleer believes in creating animation that is as brilliant, diverse and unique as every child who watches it. The decorated animation studio’s recent work includes the development of CBBC/Gulli ratings-topper Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse
Cheese (with Watch Next Media and Cloudco Ent.), the 2019 Broadcast Award-winng Pablo (with Paper Owl) and Kiva Can Do!, which aired globally on Nick Jr. Based in the heart of Dublin, Kavaleer’s 70-strong animation crew are currently at work on Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese Season 2 and Circle Square (with Wyndley Animation and the Brothers MacLeod).

Today, Disney+ revealed plans to stream Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear, beginning August 3. The news dropped with a new spot launched across the film’s social channels.

Lightyear looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said director Angus MacLane. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see Lightyear, it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”

A sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.

The film features the voices of Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and Peter Sohn as Sox. Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules lend their voices to the Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively, and James Brolin can be heard as the enigmatic Zurg. Dan Harmon & FOX’s Blockchain Creative Labs Unveil ‘Krapopolis’ NFTs

Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) and FOX Entertainment’s Web3 media and creative technology company, Blockchain Creative Labs, have unveiled krapopolis.com, featuring utility-focused, chicken-inspired NFTs, ahead of the debut of FOX’s new animated comedy, Krapopolis.

The inaugural collection of “ Krap Chickens ,” a series of limited-edition NFTs, will drop for purchase on Thursday, August 11.

Billed as the first animated comedy to be curated on the blockchain, Krapopolis is set in mythical ancient Greece and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters that try their hand at running the world’s first cities — without trying to kill each other, that is.

Krap Chickens
Krap Chickens

Fans will have the opportunity to purchase and collect NFT “Krap Chickens” that unlock exclusive utility and social media clout, including digital and real-life experiences within the Krapopolis universe. In addition to being one of history’s earliest forms of currency, the “Krap Chickens” NFTs will give collectors access to Krapopolis’ burgeoning digital ancient civilization, such as token-gated access to content and private screening rooms, entry to Discord channels, invitations to meet-and-greets with cast and producers, Krapopolis merchandise, series voting rights and first-look exclusivity to forthcoming NFT drops.

Krapopolis.com will drop 10,420 “Krap Chickens” in total. Why 10,420? Because that’s about how many seconds it would take a chicken to run a marathon, obviously. Each minted NFT will be unique, produced and illustrated by Krapopolis animators and generated from a wide range of attributes with varying degrees of rarity. All NFT artwork will originate directly from content that appears in the program.

“In addition to being one of the most groundbreaking storytellers in the business, Dan is a master at cultivating fan engagement and building community among viewers,” said Scott Greenberg, CEO of Blockchain Creative Labs and Co-Founder and CEO of Bento Box Entertainment.  “This first collection of Krapopolis NFTs, and the utility they will provide, represent the early beginnings of how Dan and other creators can harness Web3 to open the door and bring audiences closer to their content than ever before.”

Set to premiere on FOX in 2023 and created by Harmon, Krapopolis features the voices of Emmy Award winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Pam Murphy (Mapleworth Murders) and Duncan Trussell (The Midnight Gospel). Krapopolis is produced by FOX Entertainment’s Emmy-winning animation studio, Bento Box Entertainment.  The program is fully owned by FOX Entertainment.  Jordan Young is executive producer/showrunner, working under Harmon’s supervision and handling the series’ day-to-day activities.

Writer, producer, creator and actor Dan Harmon is the Emmy-winning creator/executive producer of the comedy series Community, co-creator/EP of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty and creator/EP of FOX’s Krapopolis. Rick and Morty premiered in December of 2013 and quickly became a ratings hit, breaking records as the #1 comedy in key demos and garnering consecutive Emmy wins for Outstanding Animated Program. In 2018, Adult Swim renewed the series for 70 new episodes. In 2015, he executive produced the Oscar-nominated animated feature film Anomalisa. Harmon’s projects currently in various stages of production include Little Demon (FX), Strange Planet (Apple TV+) and the latest season of Rick and Morty.

Trailer: ‘Deepa & Anoop’ Inspires Kids to Get Creative in Mattel’s First Original Toon

Mattel, Inc. announced today that its all-new animated children’s series Deepa & Anoop will debut on Netflix on August 16. Created by acclaimed Bollywood animator Munjal Shroff (Shortcut Safari), accomplished writer Lisa Goldman (Dragon Tales) and award-winning producer Heather Kenyon (Doki Adventures), Deepa & Anoop is Mattel Television’s first animated series based on original intellectual property.

The colorful, music-driven series follows the adventures of seven-year-old Deepa and her best friend Anoop, a half-ton, color-changing baby elephant. The dynamic duo, self-appointed “concierges of fun,” makes everything bigger, grander and more wonderful for guests at Mango Manor, the bed and breakfast run by Deepa’s multigenerational family.

Enjoying a Bollywood number in every episode, Deepa creates music, merriment and mischief while working with the rambunctious Anoop to solve the simplest of problems with the most imaginative of solutions.

With a strong focus on the authenticity of Deepa’s Indian heritage, Deepa & Anoop includes 18 original song and dance performances, several of which are presented in the Bollywood tradition. The main cast is voiced by actors of Indian descent, including Pavan Bharaj as Deepa, Veena Sood (The Twilight Zone) as Naani-ji and Ana Sani (The Magic School Bus) as Mama.

“While Mattel is well-known for developing entertainment content based on our fan-favorite brands, we’re excited to partner with Netflix to bring audiences a heartwarming, all-new series based on original IP,” said Fred Soulie, Senior Vice President & General Manager at Mattel Television. “Later this summer, fans will be delighted as Deepa and her best friend Anoop take on exciting challenges and lead colorful musical numbers that illustrate the importance of friendship. Deepa & Anoop is sure to make an impact on audiences globally.”

In addition to this original series, Mattel continues to expand its roster of beloved brands well beyond the toy aisle and into the television and film space. More than 30 of Mattel’s beloved brands — including Barbie, Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, Polly Pocket, Monster High, Fireman Sam, Bob the Builder and Hot Wheels, to name a few — have come to life in various animated series, movies, specials and digital short-form. Deepa & Anoop, however, marks Mattel’s first-ever animated series based entirely on an original story and original characters.

“We have been lucky to work alongside best-in-class advisors and consultants during every stage of Deepa & Anoop’s development,” said Christopher Keenan, Senior Vice President of Creative at Mattel Television. “Our hope is that young audiences around the world will find this heartwarming series as authentic as they do relatable. We could not be more proud or excited that Deepa & Anoop is Mattel’s first original series based on all-new IP.”

The debut season of Deepa & Anoop includes 11 30-minute episodes and two 22-minute specials. The series is executive produced by Mattel Television’s Soulie and Keenan.

Hanna-Barbera Studios Rebooting Craig McCracken Classics ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ & ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’

Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe (HBSE) has begun development work to reboot the fan-favorite, award-winning animated series The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Emmy-winning creator, producer and director Craig McCracken (Wonder Over Yonder, Kid Cosmic), who first began his career at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons 30 years ago in 1992, is attached to develop both projects.

“The Hanna-Barbera homecoming of Craig was an opportunity we could not pass up,” said Sam Register, President of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. “Along with his unparalleled sense of fun and imagination, he’s bringing two of his greatest works in The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and we are so excited for these characters to be a part of the new legacy taking shape at the studio.”

The Powerpuff Girls reboot revisits and expands upon the world of the original series as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup face off against a gallery of villains comprised of familiar foes and new threats. The original series debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime.

The beloved Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends will return as an original preschool animated series welcoming a new cast of preschool-aged imaginary friends. But don’t let their young age fool you — this new lot is just as silly and playful as the original bunch. The original series ran for six critically acclaimed and award-winning seasons on Cartoon Network. During its run,  the show earned six Emmy Awards and has since been acknowledged by Entertainment Weekly as one of the best shows that aired on Cartoon Network.

Sarah Fell (VP, Original Kids and Family Animation, Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe) will oversee development of both projects at the studio which is currently in production on The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe and the highly anticipated The Amazing World of
Gumball: The Movie! (working title) and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series (wt) for HBO Max. Recently announced development include a stop-motion animated reboot of Wacky Races
starring Dastardly and Muttley.

Frederator Fetches New Hybrid Series for TikTok Stars ‘Hammy and Olivia’

Frederator Studios, a WOW! Unlimited Media Inc. company, announces that it has entered development on its newest show, the live-action/animation crossover series Hammy and Olivia, starring the stubby-legged canine internet celebrities of the same names.

Hammy and Olivia, TikTok’s cutest corgis, have quickly become break-out stars on social media, amassing a fan base of millions of followers on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram since owner Chris Equale first started producing content in March 2020 during quarantine. What began as a creative outlet while stuck at home quickly turned into much more as fans fell in love with Equale talking with his dogs Hammy and Olivia in offbeat skits, complete with cartoonish sound effects, playful camera work and plenty of costumes.

Frederator’s new Hammy and Olivia series will target kids ages 6+ with winks to an older audience designed to entertain the entire family with creative storytelling and exciting adventures filled with entertainment, humor and family-friendly chaos.

Like most of us, Equale found himself stuck at home navigating an unprecedented global pandemic. With coronavirus hospitalizations and empty grocery store shelves occupying the headlines, Equale saw an opportunity to help his friends and family smile through the lens of his silly corgis, Hammy and Olivia. When he posted his first video to TikTok, he had no idea that his video would catch the eyes of more than just his close circle, but it was quickly seen by millions.

The global reaction to this wholesome, 15-second video was the catalyst Equale needed to turn his daily focus into helping the world smile during very uncertain times. Over the course of two years, Equale has produced over 700 videos receiving billions of views, and millions of fans of all ages tune in to Hammy and Olivia’s social media channels every day for a smile and a daily giggle.

“We feel that whether you’re a single adult or a family household, your heart will beat with these two dogs,” says Isabel Schulz, Director of Development at Frederator Studios. “We’ve been wildly impressed by Chris’ ability to capture such magic with just a cellphone, and we know there is a much lengthier story to unpack with these two. It’s an all-hands-on-deck mission to get these two larger-than-life personas into lengthier adventures that will captivate viewers.”

Equale says, “One thing any animal lover will agree on is that you want to root for a corgi. They aren’t blessed with the longest legs or the fluffiest tails … they are true underdogs. Frederator sees the heroes that live within these two, lovable pups, and their studio’s imaginative expertise has given me the creative liberty to explore infinite possibilities. Their team’s alignment on prioritizing what our millions of fans have grown to love while also seeing an opportunity to immerse these established characters into a world that will complement their unique personalities has been the biggest dream come true. I’ve never been more excited for the limitless adventure that our fans will be able to enjoy.”

Created by Equale, Hammy and Olivia will be produced by Frederator Studios led by Schutlz and Frederator’s CEO Michael Hirsh. Genius Brands International will also develop a global licensing, merchandising, promotions and retail program supporting the brand and series.

TIME Boards Info Savvy Series ‘Scoops’ from Guru Studio

Toronto-based children’s entertainment leader Guru Studio (PAW Patrol, True and the Rainbow Kingdom, Pikwik Pack, Big Blue) has unveiled its latest project, Scoops,a new animated educational comedy series being developed with the support of TIME Studios’ Kids & Family division. The show will teach kids 5-8 how to develop a lifelong practice of separating fact from fiction, whether it’s a schoolyard rumor or misinformation online.

“We are excited to partner with Guru, an industry leader in animated storytelling, to ensure that Scoops adheres to important journalistic principles for kids,” said Maria Perez-Brown, Head of Kids & Family, TIME Studios. “Skills such as media literacy and critical thinking are crucial for kids, especially when they are surrounded by technology and have access to massive amounts of information at such a young age.”

Scoops follows eight-year-old fact-finder Ellerby, her best friend Olsen and their ever-present camera as their natural curiosity leads them to uncover the truth hidden behind rumors in their neighborhood. Whether Ellerby is digging into goofy questions like why the Paper Factory smells like dirty feet or exploring hard truths like why PJ’s parents decided to stop being married, she will use news-gathering skills designed to judge the credibility and reliability of the information.

The Scoops Pledge: Is it true? Is it fair? Is it a story I should share?

The 52 x 11′ educational comedy brings a focus on media literacy, as Ellerby always adheres to her failsafe method for ensuring her reports are truthful, fair, and unbiased. TIME Studios and TIME for Kids Magazine bring nearly a century of journalism experience to the project designed to introduce children to the foundational journalistic concepts of truth and fairness. In partnership with TIME for Kids, Ellerby will be featured in journalism literacy material distributed to over 3 million American children.

“Like so many kids today, Ellerby has a wild enthusiasm for asking ‘why’ and finding the truth,” said Frank Falcone, President and Executive Creative Director at Guru Studio. “We’re thrilled to be working with an incredible team at TIME Studios and TIME for Kids, who have such a rich history of telling stories with integrity that get at the heart of our community.”

Andrea Delbanco, Editor in Chief of TIME for Kids, added, “Kids are never too young to be taught the fundamentals of news and media literacy, which is the mission of TIME for Kids in classrooms and homes across the country and around the world. Children are innately curious. Teaching them critical-thinking skills at an early age will help them navigate the news and the world around them.”

Scoops is created by Fablevision’s Tone Thyne (Adventures of Napkin ManWonder Pets!Go! Go! Cory Carson) and executive produced by  Falcone and Rachel Reade Marcus for Guru Studio, and Perez-Brown for TIME Studios.

Guru Studio will manage international distribution as well as merchandising and licensing rights.

‘Heart of the City’ Comic Gets Animated with Slap Happy & Andrews McMeel

Vancouver’s Slap Happy Cartoons has announced a partnership with Andrews McMeel Entertainment, a division of global media company Andrews McMeel Universal, to develop the popular newspaper, web and book-based property Heart of the City.

The Heart of the City comic strip debuted in newspapers in 1998 and is syndicated by Andrews McMeel Syndication in both newspaper and web format. Today, it appears in 50 newspapers and news sites across the U.S., Canada, and a number of other countries including India, the Netherlands and Trinidad.

Andrews McMeel Publishing released the first Heart of the City book collection, Heart Takes the Stage, in May 2022 to strong reviews.

Heart of the City tells the story of Heart, a girl with big dreams and a love of drama, who lives with her mom, Addy, in Philadelphia, and has always had the support of her best friends, Dean and Kat.

The strip has enjoyed a strong following since it first appeared, when it was originally created by award-winning cartoonist, writer and animator Mark Tatulli. In 2020, Tatulli handed the story over to acclaimed cartoonist and editor “Steenz.” who developed a new storyline in which Heart and her friends were a few years older – she is now 11, but she’s still the same Heart: energetic and funny, with a pronounced weakness for celebrity fads and an obsession with mega-stardom.

This rejuvenated Heart of the City, which combines familiar characters and situations with new arrivals and the preoccupations of a tween cast, has enjoyed a strong reception, both as a comic strip and the recently-released Heart Takes the Stage. Publishers Weekly praised the book as “a hilarious modern update,” noting that “the compact stories each pack a punch” and, “Steenz’s deadpan humor artfully paints a madcap adventure through middle school’s highs and lows.”

Slap Happy Cartoons and Andrews McMeel Entertainment believe the strip has strong potential in other formats. The target audience for Heart and her adventures – six- to 11-year olds and families – is a large one, and the diverse characters are very appealing: kind, funny, a bit chaotic and slightly eccentric, though their day-to-day challenges – maintaining friendships, trying to be popular and occasionally focusing on schoolwork – are highly relatable for most youngsters and their parents.

Heart of the City is a cartoon that has established itself as a big favorite with online and newspaper readers since 1998 and has successfully reinvented itself for the 2020s without losing the wit, fun and spirited characters its audience has grown to know and love. Today in the hands of the very talented Steenz it has underlined its promise and is ready to expand its reach,” said Josh Mepham, Partner and Director of Development at Slap Happy Cartoons.

Bridget McMeel, Executive Producer, Andrews McMeel Entertainment, notes, “The positive response to the successful handover of Heart and her story from Mark to Steenz has been enhanced by excellent reviews for Heart Takes the Stage. This is a character and storyline with vast potential in multiple formats. We’re looking forward to working with Slap Happy on taking Heart’s adventures to an even bigger audience.”

‘Close Enough,’ But No Fourth Season: HBO Max Cancels JG Quintel Toon

Close Enough, the original adult animated comedy from Regular Show creator JG Quintel, will not be returning for fourth season on HBO Max. The streamer told Deadline: “After three great seasons, Close Enough is coming to an end. We are so proud of the series and grateful to creator JG Quintel and our partners at Cartoon Network Studios, who made this show an instant fan favorite on HBO Max.”

Quintel commented on the news on Twitter, writing: “It’s true, Close Enough is ending after 3 seasons. I feel fortunate to have worked with so many talented people. Thank you to everyone that helped bring it to life, and to everyong who watched!”

Shutting down Close Enough means the streamer’s current original adult animation lineup is down Steve Dildarian’s recently renewed Ten Year Old Tom and DC’s Harley Quinn, which is about to debut Season 3 this month. However, HBO Max has a hearty development slate, including the Clone High reboot, Velma spin-off and several other projects announced last year.

Close Enough is a surreal animated comedy about a married couple (voiced by Quintel and Gabrielle Walsh), their five-year-old daughter (Jessica DiCicco) and their two divorced best friends/roommates (Jason Mantzoukas and Kimiko Glenn), all sharing a cramped apartment on the eastside of Los Angeles. They navigate a chaotic time in their 30s as they struggle to grow up without growing old. It’s about juggling work, kids, and pursuing your dreams, all while avoiding alien fitness cults, yacht-rock vampires, and silent film era bison. Their life may not be ideal, but for now, it’s close enough.

Close Enough was originally ordered by TBS in 2017 befor emoving to the HBO Max lineup. The show attained a 100% Fresh Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season in 2020.

Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, Season 3 premiered with eight episodes in April. The third run of Quintel’s surreal comedy about a gang of 30-something L.A. roommates struggling with adulthood (and worse) featured guest stars like Henry Winkler, Laraine Newman, John Early, Nikki Glaser, Debra Wilson and Monét X. Change. Danielle Brooks and James Adomian were also series regulars.
