distribution company Dandelooo (Stinky Dog, Shooom’s Odyssey) announced itself the producer of Haut Perché! (English working title: High Perched), the winner of this year’s TFOU d’Animation Contest, TF1 Group’s annual European animation short film competition.
After the TFOU d’Animation Prize was awarded to Laetitia Salsano, scriptwriter of Haut Perché!, a Call for Talent Directing was launched among young animation school graduates trained in the 2D technique.
Emeline Penet
Emeline Penet, a graduate from l’EMCA (Ecole des Métiers d’Art et d’Animation, Angoulême), won the Call for Talent Directing and will direct the one minute 30-second film from the award-winning script.
This year’s contest theme, “Nature, Our Greatest Adventure!”, encourages children to drop the all-consuming screen activities to go out to play, create their own games and experience an invigorating adventure filled with laughter and to love nature and protect it for the future.
Co-financed by the TFI Group and SACD (Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques), Haut Perché! is produced by Dandelooo. The completed short film will be screened at MIFA 2022 at Annecy, and broadcast on all TF1’s linear and digital screens from June 2022.
“We were charmed by the originality and freshness of Emeline’s proposal, which reflects her talent and enthusiasm. We are delighted to support Emeline in the creation of this ode to Nature and proud to have the renewed and continued confidence of TF1 for the fourth year,” commented Dandelooo’s co-producers Jean-Baptiste Wery and Emmanuèle Pétry.
Studio 100, one of the leading independent studios for children’s and family entertainment, joins forces with Hamburg based youngfilms and international prodco B-Water Studios to bring the new CGI adventure-comedy series (52 x 11’) to life.
The production will be realized in association with Studio 100 Media’s Munich-based Studio Isar Animation. Studio 100 Media takes over worldwide rights distribution as well as licensing & merchandising.
Produced by Henning Windelband (Conni and the Cat, Conni) and Dirk Hampel (Pettson and Findus, Treasure Trekkers), the series is targeted at six- to 11-year olds. Production will commence at the end of this year and the series will be available in 2024.
Johnny Sinclair: Ghost Hunter is based on the current best-selling novels by Sabine Städing (Magnolia Steel, Petronella Apfelmus) and is a spin-off of the cult franchise John Sinclair: Ghost Hunter, a ghost crime novel series whose success spans from the late 1970s, when it was part of over 250 million sold penny dreadful novellas, until the present, with over 6 million sold novels and 200 radio play episodes. Jason Dark, the mastermind author behind the original John Sinclair, endorses this spin-off project.
Synopsis: Johnny Sinclair can see ghosts. And many are out there to get him! Guided by a magical talking skull, the young ghost hunter Johnny and his best friends hunt monsters, spectres, and many other spooky creatures – while trying to survive the ghastliest place of all: School…
Johnny Sinclair: Ghost Hunter
Studio 100 Media, youngfilms and B-Water will be introducing Johnny Sinclair to the international market and looking for commissioning broadcasters and presales at this year’s MIFA in Annecy.
“We feel privileged to be part of this collaboration. The cult of the original book series goes way back and we are absolutely convinced that this spin off for children has all the right elements for an exciting and successful series,” comments Martin Krieger, CEO of Studio 100. “We are looking forward to working with Henning Windelband, his team and B-Water.”
Windelband, CEO of youngfilms, says, “Searching for exciting content that moves, I came across the novels of Johnny Sinclair. Creating a youthful counterpart for the extremely successful cult ghost hunter John Sinclair and thus making it accessible to a new, younger target group works fantastically. Johnny Sinclair is a modern fairy tale and a strong brand, which is entertaining, thrilling, educational, international and unique. It is already a great pleasure and lots of fun to work with our partners B-Water and Studio 100.”
“We belive there is a real lack of a funny action-comedy ghost buster series in the market and Johnny Sinclair has all the potential to fill that gap,” adds B-Water CEO Dirk Hampel.
GCI Film has announced that its animated family feature, Ozi: Voice of the Forest, will be debuting its first scenes at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 15 in France, with a panel conversation featuring executive producer Rodrigo Blaas, director Tim Harper and the award-winning animation team from Mikros Animation.
The independently financed feature follows the journey of a teenage orangutan named Ozi and her friends, who sets out on a voyage of discovery across the rainforest, in a quest to find her parents in a land that has fallen victim to deforestation.
Supported by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions and multi-Academy-Award-winning producer Mike Medavoy, the feature aims to raise awareness around the issues our planet’s rainforests face due to growing levels of deforestation, and how this affects the ecosystems within.
Voices of Ozi: Voice of the Forest include Amandla Stenberg as Ozi, Laura Dern, RuPaul, Donald Sutherland and Djimon Hounsou, under the direction of renowned animated content director Tim Harper and creators Keith Chapman (PAW Patrol, Bob the Builder) and Rodrigo Blaas (Pixar’s WALL-E, Finding Nemo). The original screenplay was written by Emmy Award winner Ricky Roxburgh (Tangled, Spy Kids).
With creative development from concept-to-delivery from the Mikros Animation team, the fully CGI film features the animation work of over 300 animation experts globally, driven by both their passion for storytelling, and communicating the underlying social cause. Sean Mullen, Head of Story and Character Animation at Mikros, comments, “Through this film’s animation style, we’ve aimed to build something that feels both fun and whimsical, with the ultimate goal to marry art and entertainment with messages around global deforestation.”
Adam Stanhope, Director of CGI Film, adds, “Mikros Animation are a key part of the global team we have assembled to complete this project, and it’s a testament to the strength of our story that we’ve been able to attract such world class talent and production partners.”
The film’s producers and Mikros Animation team will be speaking about Ozi: Voice of the Forest and debuting the first full-length scenes exclusively at the Annecy Festival, on June 15, 4 – 5:15 p.m. local time. More details can be found here.

Just in time for the June 19 second season premiere of Birdgirl on Adult Swim (and June 20 on HBO Max), the show’s executive producer and co-creator Erik Richter answers a few of our burning questions about one of the world’s quirkiest superhero/CEOs and her very awkward teammates. The show, which first debuted in April of 2021, finds Judy Ken Sebben (voiced by Paget Brewster) and the Birdteam attempting to navigate the headaches of modern corporations — tackling everything from ethics in new tech to cancel culture and rejuvenating skin sack health fads!
Here is what Erik told us:
Animation Magazine: First up, congrats on the new season of your clever show. What would you like to reveal to us about the second season?
Erik Richter: Thanks! As much as I thought the first season was great, this one’s better. Season 1 was about Judy being forced to take over her dad’s socially irresponsible brick-and-mortar company, this one is about her having to own the fact that she’s the boss and there’s no one but her to blame for the damage it causes. I love comedy where people are knocked down a couple of pegs, and there’s a lot of that this season.
Also, the characters — played by our unfathomably talented cast — are coming into their own, which makes it feel like they actually live together in their own little world. Relationships we didn’t imagine in the first season have suddenly blossomed with less obvious pairings like Meredith [voiced by Negin Farsad] and Dog With Bucket Hat [John Doman], who have an incredible comedy chemistry. Since the beginning, our Adult Swim development executive, Jordan Askins, has really pushed us to lean into relationships and not just make it about plot. She saw the magic in the workplace comedy even more than we did. Her urging us in this direction kept us on point and made the show markedly better.
Paul (Tony Hale) helps Dog With Bucket Hat (John Doman) and Brian O’Brien (Rob Delaney) see eye to eye in ‘Birdgirl’
What was the toughest part about putting together the sophomore adventures of this eccentric heroine?
Other than the fact the entire season was produced remotely, the toughest part was winnowing down 15-or-so episode ideas to six. The writers rooms for Seasons 1 and 2 have been the best rooms I’ve had the fortune to participate in. So much talent and funny thinking — which, during COVID, is saying something. The Season 2 room broke all these stories during the darkest days of the pandemic. You’d think the prospect of imminent death would be creatively stifling, but it was exactly the opposite. In a lot of ways, the Season 2 team were each others’ salvation through some scary times. We virtual-hugged a lot.
What kind of reactions did you get from fans from the first season? What were the most memorable ones?
Is it okay to say I’m not really sure? I have no online presence and I go out of my way not to discuss work when I’m not working and my interactions with human beings took something of a hit during COVID so I’m not altogether sure what people’s reactions have been. Folks I respect have told me it’s funny, so I trust it’s funny. I live much of my life offline and not talking about what I do. A few of my friends don’t even know I do this for a living. Yes, I’m an odd person.
Negin Farsad as Meredith and Paget Brewster as Judy/Birdgirl in ‘Birdgirl’
Where is the animation produced and how long does it take to put a season together from script to delivery?
This season is being produced by Global Mechanic in Vancouver, and I can’t speak highly enough of them. They picked up where Awesome Inc. (our great Season 1 Atlanta-based studio) left off and they didn’t miss a beat. We focus to a large degree on facial acting in Birdgirl, which is somewhat unusual for TV animation. But since we’re concentrating on what’s happening inside the character, the best way to communicate that is through tight shots and more complex facial expressions. I know I’m probably on our rigging team’s hit-list, but they have done an incredible job.
Global really has built an amazing team of artists: Our animation leads, Tim Stuby, Rachel Stolberg and Eden Timm; artists Pia Guerra, Adam de Souza, Lily Snowden-Fine and Carly Monardo, who designed our characters; our board team, led by Drew Schmidt and Mike Owens and a bunch of folks who’ve added beauty and jokes at every stage. And, if nothing else makes this piece, please mention my creative partner: Supervising director Rich Ferguson-Hull, whose wisdom, calm and sense of humor are far too good for the likes of me.
How many people work on the show overall — and which animation tools do they use to create it?
About 100 or so people. Harmony.
Birdgirl
What do you think the original fans of Harvey Birdman would think of the show?
In developing Birdgirl, an obvious move would’ve been to have her team up with Harvey and throw up a shingle outside their law office in Ft. Lauderdale. It would’ve been a perfectly fine show, but Franklin & Bash already did it. We were more taken by the idea of what it means to be the daughter of a guy who polluted and #MeToo-ed his way to the top. No offense to Phil, still dear to our hearts, but he left a big mess to clean up.
We definitely considered how OG Harvey Birdman fans would react to a show without the old characters and really hoped they’d give the updated take a chance and join us on the journey. We like to think of the two shows as a parallel existence where they all live in the same world but work in different office buildings. I have a fantasy that the Birdman cast lived — and the entire show took place — in a terrarium in Judy’s office. Can you imagine being trapped in a terrarium with Peter Potamus?
I guess the hope is that anyone who loved Harvey Birdman checks out the show and discovers Birdgirl has the same fast-paced, self-deprecating tone and is a loving companion to Birdman.
Birdgirl
What are some of the funniest moments of the new season?
Judy unboxes her favorite childhood toy that, unfortunately, everyone else thinks is a sex toy.
Meredith is tasked with shepherding Dog With Bucket Hat through the five stages of grief, which, because it’s Dog, have all been distilled down to “anger” and “depression.”
The Birdteam take down a brocialist.
We also learn Birdgirl always dates guys Judy hates, and Gillian has the power of telekinesis — but only with baked goods
Why do you think audiences should tune in?
Because, hopefully, they get to experience the same joy we felt making it.
Kether Donohue as Gillian in ‘Birdgirl’
What is your take on the booming adult animation scene in 2022?
It’s never been more vibrant. If you have any doubts just try to book voiceover talent on short notice.
What are the animated shows or movies that changed your life?
Some animation-related people whose work I admire: Jay Ward, Ed Benedict, Aardman Animations, Mary Blair (my first memory of self-hypnosis by book), Genndy Tartakovsky and Harvey Birdman. Without him, I’d be selling time-shares … which I’m sure some of my friends think I do (see above).
What do you think Birdgirl would think of the scary state of our country in 2022?
She’s such an optimist and defender of all that’s right and good, I think she’d look for the positive no matter how bleak things seem. Unfortunately, her best friend is a massive cynic and mind reader who loves to put a sag in Birdgirl’s shorts.
Birdgirl
Birdgirl Season 2 premieres on Adult Swim on June 19 at midnight ET/PT, available the next day on HBO Max.
Headling the just-announced cast for Disney Channel’s upcoming animated superhero comedy, Hamster & Gretel will introduce Meli Povenmire in the titular role of Gretel.
The Disney Branded Television series will also star Michael Cimino (Love, Victor) as Gretel’s older brother, Kevin; Beck Bennett (SNL) as Gretel’s pet hamster, Hamster; Joey King (Kissing Booth) as her tech-savvy cousin, Fred; Matt Jones (Bob Hearts Abishola) as the siblings’ easygoing father, Dave; and Carolina Ravassa (Maya and the Three) as their charismatic mother, Carolina.
Hamster & Gretel introduces Kevin and his younger sister Gretel, who are about to be bestowed superpowers by space aliens. But something goes awry, and it’s Gretel and her pet hamster (named Hamster) who suddenly have new abilities. Now, protective older brother Kevin must figure out how to work with both Gretel and her pet Hamster to protect their city from mysterious dangers.
Premiering this summer on Disney Channel, a sneak peek of Hamster & Gretel was released last week:
Created by Dan Povenmire (of the Emmy Award-winning global hit series Phineas and Ferb), Hamster & Gretel is produced by Disney Television Animation and is inspired by Povenmire’s relationship with his significantly younger sister. Brandi Young serves as producer, Joanna Hausmann will serve as co-producer/story editor and Dorothea Gerassimova is the art director.
The comedy series follows The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora Gibbs (Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum.
Chaudry will star as series regular Hannah, Nora’s younger and arguably more accomplished sister. Raised in the era of likes, shares and the idea that “if it wasn’t posted, it didn’t happen,” Hannah translated her e-acumen and talent for enthusiastic and aspirational make-up videos into a burgeoning social media empire, complete with a legion of “Fan-a-Hannahs.” Her success has unfortunately upended her dynamic with Nora.
Holm was cast as recurring guest star JJ, a formerly sheepish, nerdy intern-turned uber-cool, tech entrepreneur who happens to be Nora’s ex. On the surface, his ambition knows no bounds, but the real JJ underneath still hopes to win back Nora.
The Muppets Mayhem is developed by Adam F. Goldberg, Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes based on characters created by Jim Henson. It is written by Goldberg (The Goldbergs), Barretta (The Muppets, Muppets Haunted Mansion) and Yorkes; executive producers are Goldberg, Barretta, Michael Bostick and Kris Eber. Yorkes is a co-executive producer. The Muppets Studio’s David Lightbody and Leigh Slaughter are also executive producers. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by ABC Signature and The Muppets Studio for Disney+.
Best known as co-creator, writer and star of the hit Comedy Central show Workaholics, which ran for seven seasons, Holm can currently be seen in the Netflix miniseries Inventing Anna. He hosts the This Is Important podcast with fellow Workaholics creators Adam Devine, Blake Anderson and Kyle Newacheck and will soon be seen in About My Father alongside Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro and Paramount+ rom-com At Midnight. Other projects Holm has starred in includes NBC’s Champions, Netflix’s The Package and Game Over, Man! which he wrote, produced and starred in alongside Adam Devine and Blake Anderson (Mail Order Comedy).
Holm’s other credits include roles in A Happening of Monumental Proportions, How to Be Single, The Intern and a scene-stealing recurring role as Pastor Casey in Hulu’s The Mindy Project. He has also had roles in the Sundance hit Unexpected , Inherent Vice, The Interview and Top Five.
Chaudry is an ACTRA and three-time Canadian Screen Award winning actor and singer who began her career with small parts in TV productions such as Degrassi: The Next Generation. She made her theater debut as Little Cosette in the 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables, then returned to TV in roles on Nickelodeon’s Max & Shred, Daytime Emmy-nominated series Holly Hobbie, Daytime Emmy- and CSA-winning series Dino Dana and Disney+ series The Mysterious Benedict Society.
Chaudry was nominated for a 2017 CSA for her role as Clara in the CSA-winning animated movie The Curse of Clara: A Holiday Tale, and voices Parvana in the Oscar-, Golden Globe- and CSA-nominated feature film The Breadwinner, for which she received the ACTRA award for best voice performance and was nominated for an Annie Award. She also voices roles in Netflix’s Charlie’s Colorforms City, PAW Patrol: The Movie, Bakugan: Battle Planet, Let’s Go Luna!,The Dog & Pony Show, Rosie’s Rules and upcoming series Daniel Spellbound.
Today, global kids content distributor Jetpack Distribution announces it has acquired the rights for 2D animated botanical comedy children’s series Flora, produced by Brazil’s Birdo Studios. The deal comprises 52 x 11-minutes of the show, targeting four- to seven-year olds. Flora has also been selected for the MIFA Campus in 2022.

Flora
Florais a comedy show about growing up in the botanical world, where becoming an adult may take centuries! Protagonist Flora is a small seed who believes she can grow into any plant she wants and is determined to prove that to everyone, using all the amazing plant skills out there.
This is easier said than done, of course! Flora will discover that there’s much more to plant life. Who would have thought that blossoming a pretty flower could make you the target of overly attached bees? Or that growing spines is not a cool trick to show at crowded parties? Or even that animal poop feels great on your roots?
The series aims to show kids how cool it is to be a plant, and uses an endless array of funny botanical metaphors to create relatable stories that cover emotions, self-discovery, and the infinite potential of each of us.
“Florais such a brilliant addition to our pre-school line up for MIFA 2022. The show features outstanding design of a unique world. It’s fun and relatable, and teaches kids about self-discovery and the various emotions encountered growing up,” says Jetpack Distribution CEO, Dominic Gardiner. “We are very excited to be working with the hugely talented and internationally recognised Birdo Studios.”
Paulo Muppet, Executive Producer & Partner at Birdo Studios, says, “Jetpack Distribution has been an amazing partner for us for many years and we are super excited to join forces with them in the development stage ofFlora.Their deep knowledge of the animation landscape will help us reach new heights with our content and, above all, their team are a joy to work with!”
Flora joins Jetpack Distribution’s catalog of kids’ animation offerings built since its founding in 2014, which includes Clangers, Chuggington, Mighty Little Bheem, Dennis & Gnasher Unleashed, Kitty Is Not a Cat and more.

On the occasion of World Oceans Day, creative content studio Psyop announced their most-recent short film, Bottle Capfrom Directors Marie Hyon and Marco Spier, is being developed into an episodic series under the leadership of animation industry veteran Michael Ryan as executive producer/writer.
The animated short film follows an insecure fiddler crab named Shelton, who becomes an unwitting accomplice in the business of extinction as his dreams of being “average” are co-opted by new dreams of power and destiny. Like the short, the series will use humor and a light touch to explore the many pressing issues facing the world’s oceans today, with the intention of educating and inspiring the next generation to act, protect and treasure the oceans.
Ryan will oversee the episodic series development with a production start date slated in Fall 2022. The 20-year veteran has worked on series for hit franchises such as Kung Fu Panda, Scooby Doo, Teenage Ninja Turtles and Johnny Bravo, among many others.
“It is an honor to have been selected to bring this beautifully conceived and crafted story forward. I am excited to begin work in this fantastical oceanic world we get to play in, with a team ready to unlock our imaginations to bring a wealth of stories to life,” said Ryan.
“Now is the time for us to tell impactful, positive, engaging stories about our oceans. Let’s entertain and educate audiences so that they are inspired to protect what we are on the verge of losing. We hope that the Bottle Cap series will do for the oceans what Bambi did to raise awareness about the protection of forests and wildlife,” said Hyon and Spier.
Andrew Linsk, producer & executive producer, added, “We believe stories have the power to change behavior — we are hopeful that in expanding this story with an episodic series, we can shine a light on real world problems. We have great faith in our collaboration with Michael, he brings tremendous talent, a true passion and understanding for what we hope to accomplish.”
Produced out of the award-winning animation studio, Psyop (co-founded by the two directors along with Todd Mueller, Kylie Matulick and Eben Mears), Bottle Cap was the recipient of the Epic MegaGrant. The ‘dream team’ of animators, artists and technicians soon brought Shelton to life in 3D and created Shelton’s seaside world.
With over 20 years of creative work experience, Michael Ryan’s producing credits include work at Apple TV+, Netflix, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Prime Video, Disney, Warner Bros., DreamWorks and international productions in Japan, Europe, Russia and China. Michael won an Emmy for writing on the Netflix show All Hail King Julien as well as earning two primetime Emmy nominations and three daytime Emmy nominations. Recent collaborations include writing a script for Ricky Gervais, a musical for Christian Slater and enjoyed the privilege of working closely with Taika Waititi on an animated project.
Celebrating over two decades of exceptional artistry and groundbreaking work in visual storytelling and design, Psyop continues to revolutionize the industry and blur lines between advertising and entertainment. Completely cloud based by 2021, the studio’s community of best-in-class global creators are based in London, Paris, Copenhagen, Madrid, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires, while Psyop maintains studios in New York and Los Angeles.

Netflix unveiled a first look at the intriguing animated love story from Kid Cudi and exec producer Kenya Barris (black-ish), Entergalactic. The series features a distinctive, painted CGI style and features a stellar voice cast, also announced today along with character images.
Synopsis:Entergalactic is an original, animated story about a young artist named Jabari — voiced by Mescudi — as he attempts to balance love and success. Finding the latter brings Jabari a step closer to the former, when moving into his dream apartment introduces him to his new neighbor, photographer it-girl, Meadow — voiced by Jessica Williams. An explosion of art, music, and fashion, Entergalactic takes place in the only city that can handle all three: New York.
Entergalactic Voice Cast:
Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi (previously announced) as Jabari: A charming, creative visionary with a splash of goofball, Jabari is effortlessly cool. Dressed head-to-toe in the holiest of streetwear grails, Jabari is just one of those kids you can’t help but love. At a first time crossroads of career success and the perfect apartment, he is about to find the final piece of adulthood: true love.
Jessica Williams (Love Life, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3) as Meadow: An on-the-rise photographer who is Jabari’s new neighbor, Meadow is not only the coolest girl at the party, she’s the realest.
Timothée Chalamet (Dune, Call Me by Your Name) as Jimmy: Jimmy is Jabari’s best friend and… weed dealer, though with the new drug laws he’s now focusing on crypto and new inventions. An oxymoronic, laid back conspiracy theorist, Jimmy is never without a blunt and a book.
Ty Dolla $ign as Ky: Jabari’s irreverent, and at times, inappropriate road dog. Ky is always there for Jabari, even though his support can sometimes come in interesting packages.
Laura Harrier (Hollywood, BlacKkKlansman) as Carmen: Jabari’s recent ex-girlfriend. Stylish and confident, Carmen is the girl you’re supposed to marry.
Vanessa Hudgens (Tick, Tick…Boom!) as Karina: Meadow’s best friend who is trustworthy, grounded and adorably pregnant.
Christopher Abbott (Kraven the Hunter, On the Count of Three) as Reed: A well-dressed shark with a heart and art dealer representing Meadow’s photography. Reed has the kind of chin that is sharp enough to cut glass but not strong enough to take a punch.
070 Shake as Nadia: Meadow’s associate from the art scene. Born and raised in New York City, Nadia is an in-your-face sculptor whose voice could only be drowned out by the brashness of her own work.
Jaden Smith (After Earth) as Jordan: An adolescent BMX superstar, Jordan’s talent earns a pass to kick it with Jabari and Jimmy. Jordan sees the dating landscape in New York City just a bit different than Jabari.
Keith David (From Scratch, 21 Bridges) as Mr. Rager: Jabari’s superhero creation.
Teyana Taylor (Coming 2 America, The Trap) as Boxing Coach: Meadow and Karina’s hard-nose boxing instructor at Rumble NYC.
Arturo Castro (Yes Day, Broad City) as Len: An upwardly mobile professional, Len is Jabrari’s co-worker at Cosmic Comics. He wears hard-bottom shoes and a newsboy cap. He’s super smart AND super annoying.
Macaulay Culkin (American Horror Story, The Righteous Gemstones) as Downtown Pat: Downtown legend and life-long, city-wide delinquent. Despite his gritty exterior, Pat has a very romantic heart and wise words to give.
Studio TRIGGER (Promare) returns with another thrill-a-minute anime created with CD PROJEKT RED in Poland: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The standalone, 10-episode event series follows a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Pinecone & Pony
The arrival of the new animated show Pinecone & Pony on Apple TV+ in April was one of the sweet surprises of the past season. Based on the acclaimed picture book by Kate Beaton, The Princess and the Pony, the show centers on a very unconventional heroine who along with her best friend discovers new ways to be a powerful warrior. The stereotype-defying show was adapted by animation veteran Stephanie Kaliner (Odd Squad), and features the voices of Maria Nash, Chase W. Dillon, Rachel House, Thom Allison, Alicia Richardson, Andy Hull and Viola Abley. The animation was produced by DreamWorks Animation, Atomic Cartoons and First Generation Films.
The show’s story editor is Taneka Stotts, an Emmy-nominated TV writer and comic-book creator and publisher, whose credits include Young Justice, Magic: The Gathering, My Little Pony: Pony Life, Craig of the Creek and Steven Universe Future. She was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about the show, her career and the changing impact of representation in animation:
Animation Magazine: First of all, congrats on the show. It’s charming, funny and delivers a wonderful message. Can you tell us how you got involved with the production?
Taneka Stotts
Taneka Stotts: I joined the team in February 2020, right after wrapping up my work on Magic: The Gathering. I really loved the premise of the show because, for the first time, I saw myself clearly in a TV show. I had already been a fan of Kate Beaton’s book, which was about different ways of being a warrior, which I thought was unique and fun. However, once the show was getting started, it was being expanded upon, and we were able to push it to unexpected territories. The stories we are telling might be traditional in terms of the narratives, but they also take a slight deviation on some of those and give you something that’s a little bit harder to digest, both as a kid and an adult.
What was the creative process like?
Earlier on, it was me and [exec producer] Stephanie [Kaliner] working together pretty much 24/7. We had a few summits with our freelance and staff writers. The producers even went as far as changing some of the rules within the Canadian Writers Guild to get me in so that I could be credited as a guild member while working on a Canadian production. It was really beautiful and it just went to show that studios are very capable of these things if they push for it. In addition, you have to keep in mind that they also went the extra mile of giving you a show that is not just the same kind of comedy-action hybrid that some feel we’ve been inundated with lately. This one was going a little bit deeper and asking us to really pull out a bit of emotion, and allowing us to have those quieter moments — moments where Pinecone cries or when Pinecone is really pumped! We all approached the show with the idea that we wanted to make the show for today’s kids. That meant that we would push back on our own nostalgia a little bit.
Pinecone & Pony
What made this show special to you?
First off, it was taking what I’ve always loved throughout my entire life, which is mythology, creation, stories, pixies and goblins. There’s this medieval approach mixed with this fantasy, indie approach, and it gives me the best of both worlds because it’s a sandbox where everything is not finalized. For example, I remember pitching the idea that tortoises are actually really evil. They can mess you up. And when I was doing that, I was trying to explain that in other parts of the world, tortoises are very strong animals that are very terrifying. So we were taking some global truths and mixing them up with myths, fairy tales and fables and kind of mismatching them a little bit. So it was a very ultimate mash-up project.
I was really proud of the direction that everybody stirred the show along. We did mention Miyazaki quite a bit, so it was also about taking things that we love and recreating them. It’s not about just paying homage: There is a way to take those special moments and then to add on to them. You are actually heightening the moment, while also giving respect to those who inspired it.
What kind of feedback have you received from the show since its debut in April?
We’ve gotten quite a few kids drawing the characters. They’re very adorable and they send me to the Moon. A lot of parents have been gravitating towards the series and have given us a lot of good feedback. I think we realize that we have to be organic about the show and really just let the voices speak for themselves — and don’t just try to do one ham-fisted joke after joke. Instead, you need to have the plot be the plot, and allow the characters to shine in those special moments. From what I’ve seen so far, a lot of people would really like to push the show even further. After all, we want it to be a reflection of our life experiences; These are our coworkers. This is my aunt. That’s my nephew. This is my grandma.
Pinecone & Pony
About two years ago, you and I were talking about diversity and representation in the animation world. Things are a little better now. What is your take on this issue and where do we go from here?
Yes, first of all I want to give a shout out to Jorge R. Gutierrez and Maya and the Three! As far as the animation landscape becoming what it was supposed to be — which is a world of collaboration, integration and just our imagination — I finally feel like we’re breaking that threshold and we’re finally not just committing to making space, we are making the product from that space. That’s even better than just saying, oh, we have another program that we’re setting up to make another initiative, make another council, to make another crew, to make another show that may or may not get on TV one day. Today, we’re actually seeing it happen. I don’t see us stopping or regressing in any way. I see us finally coming in, committing to what we had been saying we were going to do for so many years, which is actually making the content and seeing how people respond to it, which has been incredible.
Where do you see these efforts lagging?
One thing that I got to experience in a positive way on Pinecone & Pony was that I was able to bring in a few new writers who didn’t have a lot of animation experience. For example, GGDG is a writer and creator of the webcomic Cucumber Quest and they also did the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power graphic novel. They’re an excellent writer and artist. I just had to tell the team that they needed to take a chance with me on this. There was no negative. Everyone became a fan, so it was really easy. After that, I was able to add another non-binary writer and an Indigenous writer to the team. You know, everybody says that they’re looking for these voices, but because these new voices don’t have a credit, they’re usually not given the time of day. People should be taking the chance to get to know this person and then bring them on and see what they’re capable of by giving them the actual space to exist within it.
Pinecone & Pony
Of course, it wouldn’t be an interview without Taneka offering some helpful advice on thriving in the animation business!
One of the things that I tell people who are getting ready for this industry is to have their confidence ready. I don’t mean that you need to be worried about getting fired every five seconds. You know that this is something you want to do. All you need to do is be yourself. You’re already at a level of creation, a level of communication to give your stories to other people. So, you need to push it the rest of the way. Also, read scripts — all sorts of scripts, bad ones, good ones and everything in between. Things of the genre that you don’t really have anything to do with. It’s also about being able to communicate with people on a collaborative basis. You need to communicate your ideas and understand how to do it succinctly, cleanly and without offending someone who also has an imagination. Someone who will also take your words and carry them in different directions that you never imagined!
You can watch the first season of Pinecone & Pony on Apple TV+.

The tension between studios and cinema operators accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to send aftershocks through the industry. Having set an emergency precedent of Disney+ debuts with Pixar’s Soul and Luca followed up by Turning Red, Disney has decided to bypass the exhibition windows recently revised by France’s National Cinema Federation (FNCF) for it’s fall release, Strange World.
The studio adamently told Deadline on Tuesday that the sci-fi adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios would be skipping French theaters altogether and going straight to Disney+. A spokesperson asserted, “While we support French cinema — and have for decades — the new, cumbersome media chronology is anti-consumer, ignoring how behavior evolved over the last several years, and puts us at increased risk for piracy.”
The studio noted that each film’s release in particular markets will be decided on a case by case basis.
The FNCF responded in firm protestations Wednesday to Disney’s “losing choice for everyone,” saying it would “seriously undermine the economy of cinemas and the sector as a whole.” The org decried the decision as “totally unacceptable and terribly unfair.”
The Federation has invited Disney to join in meetings organized by France’s National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) to go over the January media chronology agreement. FNCF has also called for public authorities to help resolve the discord “by leading a conciliation between the stakeholders, and by avoiding making spectators and cinemas the collateral victims of these disputes.”
Under the windowing system updated as of February, Disney’s theatrical releases become available to French premium channel Canal+ after six months, but must wait 17 months after their cinema opening (shortened from 36 months) before hitting Disney+ for a limited period of five months. Then, at this 22-months-post-theatrical point, the movies must come back off Disney+ and run on free-to-air channels for a 14-month exclusive period, returning to Disney+ after 36 months.
In January, when the new timeline was announced, Disney stated that “the media chronology is not consumer friendly, nor does it establish a balanced or proportionate framework between the various players in the French audiovisual ecosystem,” adding the move was “especially frustrating” due to the studio’s increased investment in original French content.
Neither Disney or Prime Video operator Amazon signed the new agreement.

Announced during Geeked Week‘s Animation day, Netflix is partnership with prodco Ghost Corps for the toon, which will be executive produced by Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-writers Jason Reitman (director of Oscar-nominated movies Juno and Up in the Air) — son of original Ghostbusters movies director Ivan Reitman — and Gil Kenan (director of Oscar-nominated animated feature Monster House).

The new Ghostbusters project is just the latest time that the franchise has been adapted to animated series, following The Real Ghostbusters from DIC (1986-1991) and its follow-up Extreme Ghostbusters from Adelaide Prod. and Columbia TriStar Television (1997).
The original 1984 supernatural comedy movie was created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Jason Reitman also directed, opened in theaters in November of last year and achieved a $204.6 million worldwide box office despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Transmedia content creator Telescope Animation today announces the release of the first proof-of-concept trailer for its upcoming animated film, The Last Whale Singer, giving audiences a glimpse at the future of developing animated content for multiple platforms. Created entirely in Unreal Engine, today’s trailer marks the first look at a massive, shared universe with an interwoven story that includes an upcoming video game, an episodic series, AR/VR projects and more, each created using the same assets designed for the film.
The Last Whale Singer feature film tells the story of Vincent, a rebellious teenage humpback whale, who must confront his destiny and save the oceans from destruction by an ancient evil. Along with the film, the story will expand through a prequel game and several connected projects leveraging XR technology, all created and shared within Unreal Engine 5, using a custom-built pipeline.
“Our plans for The Last Whale Singer required us to look at how we create content in a different way, which meant we needed to develop a new pipeline from scratch,” said Reza Memari, Telescope’s co-Founder and co-CEO, as well as the film’s writer and director. “The clip is proof that our plan is working, and it is the first of many reveals we think both fans and other studios are going to love.”
Founded in 2018 by Memari and veteran producer and co-CEO Maite Woköck, Telescope Animation was envisioned from the start as a transmedia studio, leveraging the full potential of Unreal Engine. Memari and Woköck determined that a custom-designed pipeline within the game engine would allow artists to simultaneously develop projects across multiple platforms, all while using the same tools and assets.
Along with giving audiences a first look at an interwoven story that exists across multiple mediums, today’s trailer for The Last Whale Singer acts as a proof-of-concept, confirming the full potential of Telescope Animation’s ambitions. To help accelerate the development process for the video and speed its release, Telescope received the first of two Epic MegaGrants. Along with financial assistance, Epic also provided extensive technical expertise, but the support didn’t stop there.
Following the confirmation of the first grant earmarked for the trailer, Telescope Animation also received a second MegaGrant to help finalize work on its bespoke pipeline for Unreal Engine 5.

“It’s no longer a secret, something special is happening right now in real-time animation, and we’re thrilled to support talented creators using Unreal Engine to share stories in all-new ways,” shared Chris Kavcsak, head of Epic MegaGrants. “With The Last Whale Singer, Telescope Animation is diving into an ocean of opportunity, building a transmedia universe that can live and grow across a variety of art forms, from the popcorn-friendly big screen to moving XR experiences.”
Created in-house from the ground up, Telescope Animation’s pipeline streamlines the process for artists, game developers, animators and storytellers looking to develop multiple releases at once within Unreal Engine 5. Assets can be created in real time, speeding up the process by virtually eliminating rendering times, and then shared to other projects. Artists can also storyboard in 2D and 3D, directly within Unreal Engine, while virtual reality camera rigs further expand the possibilities by giving artists the ability to create the shot layout directly within virtual sets. Location and character creation can be procedurally generated, saving both time and resources. Telescope is also developing an advanced water simulation, which will be featured throughout the Whale Singer Universe.

Telescope Animation also received a first-of-its-kind grant from Creative Europe MEDIA (culture.ec.europa.eu), the European Union’s program supporting the cultural and creative sectors, highlighting the studio’s “Innovative Business Models and Tools.” The funding helped Telescope establish its first facilities and further the development of its proprietary pipeline. Since its founding, Telescope Animation has grown from an ambitious idea to a multi-location organization, with a game/AR/VR-focused studio in the Berlin-Brandenburg region, and an animation-focused studio in Hamburg. Staffing has also seen a significant increase, with a growing stable of full-time and contract artists and production teams helping to bring Telescope’s visions to life.
“When we founded Telescope Animation, we knew that we were creating something new — not just in terms of content, but in how we approached the entire process,” said Woköck. “Now that we have all the pieces in place, we will have a lot more to show you in the near future!”
The Last Whale Singer
Production on The Last Whale Singer feature film is set to begin later this year, with a theatrical release targeted for 2025. The prequel game, titled The Last Whale Singer: Rise of the Leviathan, is also currently in development for PC, Nintendo Switch, as well as the PlayStation and Xbox family of consoles. The game’s launch will be timed to coincide with the release of the film, slated for 2025. Additional projects connected to the shared Whale Singer universe — as well as two other original IPs in development — will be announced in the future.
The Last Whale Singer will make its official, public debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13. The concept trailer will be on display in the Epic Games booth.
